Despite overwhelming support within Crimea to join the Russian Federation, Ukrainian forces refused to give up their naval and airbases to the Russians last week. In this dispatch, VICE News correspondent Simon Ostrovsky visits the Belbek airbase, which was being overrun by Cossacks and members of Russian forces, who believe they had liberated Crimea - though local forces don't seem to agree.

And not only that! People have been brainwashed for *15 fucking years* thinking Serbians committed genocides and war crimes in the Yugo wars, and they take it as a fucking fact, like it's a given.
I say, fuck all western journalists, we've seen what happens when we let them do their work, *entire nations* brainwashed into thinking bombing innocent civilians is humanitarian.
You would not believe some people i've seen on vice videos comments! They *still* think Serbians raped women on Kosovo and Bosnia, they still think we committed genocides! The propaganda is *so fucking jammed in their brains* that you *cannot* pull it out anymore, even after i present evidence to them, they still delete it from their memory. They are hopeless. It's best to just prevent such brainwashing from happening, because there is no reverse!
We could let *both* sides do their reportage, but that doesn't work! We let *both* sides do reportage back in the Yugo wars, and this is the situation we got today!

This is EXCELLENT journalism, and it is being done in the most difficult of circumstances - a chaotic situation, misinformation, the threat of violence, open hostility to those reporting - yet somehow Simon is thoughtfully adding perspective and insight.
There is no true vested interest for the US in the Crimea and Ukraine, but more of a sentimental concern for the underdog nation seeking EU relations. Simon certainly does NOT have a vested interest or an agenda - he is simply reporting with thought and common sense (and that is NOT true for all VICE reporters).
Russia is not fooling anybody by repeating the consistent mantra of "these are citizens Crimea, not Russian soldiers leading the way." Think of the citizen lead riots in Kiev; it was a chaotic disorganized mess, without consistent slogans. Anything led by actual citizens is going to be that chaotic and disorganized. The efforts in Crimea have the canard of citizen leadership....but the Russian army is just a kiss away.
Putin and Russia are insulting our intelligence by trying to say this is a legitimate local Crimean citizens lead effort, just as Bush and Cheney insulted our intelligence a decade ago by saying Iraq would "greet us as liberators."
Stay safe, Simon, and keep doing what you are doing. It is important to have your perspective.

Following the adoption of Security Council Resolution 1483 two months after the war, then-UN Secretary General Kofi Annan appointed a Special Representative for Iraq and the UN assumed some small responsibilities there.
In August 2003, an attack on UN headquarters in Baghdad confirmed the critics' fears, killing fifteen UN staff including the Special Representative. The UN in February 2004, the UN agreed to send a mission to the country, to help construct a new interim government..

@@ALSea24 LIBYA Claim: NATO's operation over Libya was illegitimate
The NATO-led operation was launched under the authority of two UN Security Council Resolutions (UNSCR), 1970 and 1973, both quoting Chapter VII of the UN Charter, and neither of which was opposed by Russia.

After the conflict, NATO cooperated with the UN International Commission of Inquiry on Libya, which found no breach of UNSCR 1973 or international law, concluding instead that "NATO conducted a highly precise campaign with a demonstrable determination to avoid civilian casualties."

Russia did invade Ukraine. Weather you would like to admit it or not is up to you. Countries have borders for a reason and the reason is just that, to separate nations. Russia has with full knowledge disrupted the territorial integrity of Ukraine by mobilizing its troops in the region. At first claiming they were not Russian troops with zero opposition from the Ukrainian people and military in the area, they were able to systematically take down every single Ukrainian military base in the Crimean Peninsula, under the guise of a civilian pro-Russian revolt and a completely invalid unrealistic referendum, and used the Russian people already in Crimea as a diversion to the Russian troops storming the bases which belong to Ukraine. Crimea is and has been Ukrainian through treaties ratified by a popularly elected government by the people. To defy these treaties and take over the Ukrainian bases is still an invasion by the Russian military backed by Russian civilians who are a huge majority in Crimea. Those who opposed or protested this had no impact as they were simply drowned out by the pro-Russian masses. There's a majority of Russian people already in Crimea who claim Crimea is still Russian, but sorry to say the world doesn't work that way. Look at Nazi Germany annexing Austria and Poland and Czechoslovakia, claiming that the land and people are rightfully German so were just going to claim it for Germany. Crimea will never be recognized as Russian by the global community as long is it is forcefully occupied by the Russian military, which is to the rest of the world including Ukraine and the USA a preemptive act of aggression. Mr. Putin is playing war games, and its only a matter of time before he sets his sights on the rest of Ukraine... or god forbid further still. This will blow way out of proportions with extreme unintended consequences if Russia doesn't keep its hands out of the cookie jar.

    • @chaosXP3RT
      @chaosXP3RT 10 ปีที่แล้ว

It's the league of nations all over again. Putin knows the West is afraid of armed conflict and will do nothing. From a military stand point, it would unwise for Russia to invade the rest of Ukraine because the Russians have lost the surprise factor. It took 2 days for Russia to occupy the whole Crimean Peninsula and almost a whole month for the West to respond. If Putin wanted Ukraine, he could have within a week with little to no opposition. Ukraine didn't even have a Commander in Chief in Crimea for God's sake! But now Ukraine will be waiting with guns for the Russian Army and the West with sanctions. Putin won't invade the rest of Ukraine, if he does, he is a moron.

You might also consider that it was too easy for Russians to occupy Crimea because overwhelming majority of Crimean population are non - Ukrainians. They don't even speak Ukrainian and historically Crimea never was part of Ukraine until 1954 Khrushchev's whimsikal decision to join Crimea to Ukraine.
The rest of Ukraine is completely different story.

Yes. Comparing Russia to Nazi Germany is totally acceptable. Not like the majority of the Crimean populace is RUSSIAN and not like the democratically elected Ukranian government was overthrown by US funded extremists just like in Egypt and Libya prior to the occupation.
Not like the Russian government is trying to protect it's citizens and stop a repeat of Ugoslavia.

-- NATO's top military commander expressed concern Sunday about the buildup of Russian forces on Ukraine's border, as Moscow's forces consolidated their control of Crimea over the weekend.
Supreme Allied Commander Europe Gen. Philip Breedlove said Russia had a large force on Ukraine's eastern border and that he was worried it could pose a threat to Moldova's separatist Trans-Dniester region.
"The (Russian) force that is at the Ukrainian border now to the east is very, very sizable and very, very ready," Breedlove, a U.S. Air Force general, said.
"There is absolutely sufficient force postured on the eastern border of Ukraine to run to Trans-Dniester if the decision was made to do that, and that is very worrisome."

Before the Annex of Austria, Hitler invaded the Rhineland, an area of demilitarised german land. It was 100% German and during WW2 became one of the hardest areas for western Allied forces to breakthrough.
Austria was Annexed next via a "Bloodless" revolution by the Austrian Nazis followed by a German invasion army, exactly like Crimea. Like Crimea, it was 80-95% German.
Soon, the sudetenland, an area of Czechoslovakia, was taken in a small skirmish with Czech army, then the rest of Czech was taken by Russia. It had 22% german population
Next Poland was taken, starting WW2, costing the lives of 80 million people. It is widely known that if Hitler had been stoped before the take over of Czech, WW2 would not have happened.
All the time the allied forces sat back, giving their sanctions and warning, doing nothing. Im apart of the UK and I dont understand why nothing stronger is being done to take Russia back a step. Not by war, but harsher sanctions, bigger backings to eastern European countries, support of UN intervention and protection of civillians. Because sooner or later Putin may decide that the 8000 Russians in poland need liberated, since moldova, and Ukraine passed "So happily".

Ivan Nikolayev As a matter of fact Western military operations are allowed to be filmed by journalists. They even have [gasp] embedded journalists that tag along with combat units and not always portrait military in a positive light. Oh the humanity!
With that said, this situation in Crimea was not a "military" operation. Nor was it super-duper secret. Not like they were about to storm a nuke factory. They were simply evicting unarmed pilots and grease monkeys. Why can't they let media film it? What is so secret about it? And if the journalist did film it - why break his camera? Surely there has to be a more civil way to handle the situation instead of acting like a bunch of censor-thugs.
Again, I stand by my comment - this is the shape of things to come: unreasonable searches and seizures, censored media and general lawlessness.

Ukraine is handling this the best they can. They are letting Russia be the aggressor because the world will see their actions against a smaller, more peaceful nation.

"...more peaceful nation." Would that be the guys that were burning the cops alive on Maidan? Or, just the neo-nazi who broke into the prosecutor's office and threatened to hang him in the street? Just curious.

Dafttar These cops were killing them. I watched it life, on Espresso TV, how at night the snipers sculked among trees, right along the Berkut line. They were killing people, one by one. And later these cops, you seem to be so sorry for, didn't even allow the ambulances to come in and help the wounded. I saw it with my own eyes. And I cried. I'm not even Ukrainian...actually some of my ancestors were killed by Ukrainians. By I cried watching people killed in such deceitful and cruel way. Therefore I won't ever believe your russka propaganda. You even try to tell the world that the snipers were from CIA and killed both cops and Ukrainian. You propaganda is brazen and so mendacious - like nobody elses in the world.

Maryla Anonim Well the Estonian Foreign Minister think it was opositions snipers, and the FACT that nobody cares even to investigate what happen in maidan square make it thery suspicious. Of course why investigate the deaths of "martyrs" that sustain their illegal goverment. Have a nice day!
      www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2573923/Estonian-Foreign-Ministry-confirms-authenticity-leaked-phone-call-discussing-Kiev-snipers-shot-protesters-possibly-hired-Ukraines-new-leaders.html

Estonian Foreign Minister confirmed his conversation with Catherine Ashton. In this conversation he talked about the information he received from some social activist named Olga. When commenting on the news, Estonian Foreign Minister requested journalists to be very cautious when commenting on the recording because this was only one of the many versions circulating about the events in Ukraine. Literally, he said - "gossips". So, you want a gossip to be investigated. All of them or only this one? Because even more reports talk about Russian snipers shooting in Kiev!
I'm not buying your russian bullhit - I saw with my own eyes snipers shooting under the protection of Berkut militia. They were hiding among the trees, and the Berkut was just 3-4 meters away. You can say whatever you want, but it's obvious Berkut wouldn't have protected the oposition snipers. On the internet there are many films and pictures showing the snipers shooting from behind Berkut militia lines. Are you going to tell me Berkut not only allowed oposition snipers hide behind them but also protected them with their gear? You can tell such rubbish to people who didn't follow the events in Ukraine. I know better.
And one more thing. Russians are very well known for sending their agents to other countries. In Poland they heavily infiltrated the Solidarity movement and 25 years later we still discover Russian moles in politics, military, bizness. How do we know that "social activist Olga" wasn't in fact a Russian agent? Just waiting for a moment when she can do most harm. Based on my knowlege - and I follow Middle and East European history and politics for years the actions of your government are continuously EVIL.

So, ukraine has officially given order to withdraw all military forces from crimea. Well it makes sense now that almost every military base is already taken and the elite marine base was stormed and the marines were taken to the unknown location by the invaders. Good timing, I have to say.

stevqtalent My thoughts exactly. Depends on what media you read, you get very different view what's happening. It seems that quite a lot of military personel is changing sides and most of this is not reported by the press. If a military base with 40+ migs decide to defect, that should be news with a big N.
