- The eastern Ukrainian city of Bakhmut was the scene of the largest and most costly battle of the war so far. For more than ten months, the city was under the bombardment of Russian troops, until it fell in May 2023 despite the fierce resistance of the Ukrainians. The documentary follows three young soldiers a few months before the fall of Bakhmut: Vadim Adamov, Mykhailo Alekseenko, and Yuriy Samanyuk. Only one of the three men will survive the second year of the Russian assault on Ukraine.

As someone who spent 14 years in wars, you never think about the people you lost till the war ends because you are always in survival mode, then it will eat you up for the rest of yr life, and one question we all ask ourselves is why did i survive...Now I know never to fight for politicians let them go and fight at the front lines! Its crazy how good the young drone operators English is better then some here in US that grew up here.
That's why they are drone operators. They are the most educated and with so many us and British "operators" there it's extremely valuable skillset so they try to keep them most protected.

The European countries I've noticed with the best English speakers are the Baltic and Nordic countries... Estonians, Norwegian, Swedish, Finnish, Icelandic... There's some more I'm missing.
Young Germans speak very good English.
French Greek and Italian not so much. Most. Younger still speak passable English but very heavily accented. This is still very impressive.

I have little words, but the ache in my chest & the water in my eyes. I have admiration for any called to defend their land & hope for their perseverance. My God's Spirit, be kind to those left behind.
The family losing their only son at 34:18 absolutely kills me.... What a sweet, sweet couple. I hope they can find some meaning in the midst of all this. They should be very proud of their brave son, and his comrades.

Not Good. Not correct to say it is "Russian aggression". Ukraine had a choice to stay neutral and out of NATO but it chose poorly. It drank the NATO Kool-Aid given by the US.

Yurii and Helena have a good son and it touches my heart to hear his love and wisdom. A dark situation but if there was one moment in this documentary that made me feel hopeful, it was that boy's words to his mother.

I was in war between Iran and Iraq and I fought more than 2 and half year, as you know that war was from 1981 till 1988 but still I have problems with remembering how my friends died there! Those memories everytime comeback and make me really sad and I still suffering from depression! I believe for you going to be same, and you never going to forget it! That's because he was raised in an English speaking country. He attended the Plast Ukrainian boy scouts and was required to speak fluent Ukrainian and be a patriot of Ukraine and not the United States.

@@trekteam Donetsk pro-Russian separatists set up artillery positions inside civilian areas - between two civilian blocks. It's the moral failure of these DNR units, who like cowards used their own civilians they claim to represent and defend, as shields. Then they began firing at Ukrainian positions. Ukraine responded.
As if Ukraine just randomly chose to waste valuable artillery shells on completely harmless citizens who "just happened to be Russian". No, they fired back at a position that was firing at them. that position had been set up intentionally in an area full of civilians.
Russian forces frequently illegally occupy houses and turn places like schoolhouses into forward bases, under the hopes that an elementary school won't get shelled. It's cowardice from DNR traitors and you know it's not as clean and clear as "Ukraine shelled civvies because racism". As if there is black and white in war.

The war seems futile when you were born free as a citizen of the United States and your only experience of war is with hopeless, culturally stuck in the Bronze Age places like Iraq . Ukraine is a first world free nation with its democratic traditions going back to 9th century . If not fur the Russian invasion and subjugation of Ukrainians in the 18th century , then a lost battle for independence in 1918. Ukraine would has been one the most powerful of Europe’s free nations now. Also, the WW2 would not have started by Russia if they didn’t have Ukraine as their asset at that time . Americans literally never think of Russia because they are a diminished power that don’t provide many goods or services that are useful. The only time we have to consider them is when they spaz out and attack their neighbor. This is their doing by the way - we tried to invite them into the international community in the 1990s and become friends once again but Putin wasn’t having it, because his feelings were hurt over the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Never again will we resume friendly diplomatic ties until he and his entire security circle is gone. That is their problem now

@@saifulsidek2724 The dominant forces were DPR and LPR until they became incorporated into the Russian Armed Forces. To my knowledge at that time, they lost over 50% of their fighting capacity according to their generals and then Wagner and the Storm and some others ended up doing the majority of the fighting with Russian artillery and air support.
There was no fighting for Bakhmut since 2015.
Don't talk about maidan and 2014. Might get people thinking and asking questions about why this is all happening.

As a Dane, I am proud to have had the opportunity to support Ukraine's army, and most other EU countries can also be proud of all the contributions we have made so far. Denmark gave their artillery system to Ukraine before we had bought new artillery systems! 🤠

@@backfischrittera good defense has offense. The problem for UA was not retreating and regrouping immediately once they found themselves in a cauldron with only one supply road. And yet… they did it, twice - and attrited the units they needed for any chance at a successful major counteroffensive. Not to mention, it was both too slow and too rushed. Too rushed for the anemic pace of Western aid and too slow for the construction of the surovikin line.
2 key bad things happened, imo.
1) Zelensky betrayed his people by involving himself in strategic military decisions. It’s like he forgot that he was a Russian language RomCom actor and COMEDIAN before being president - not a GENERAL with many decades of battle experience. It would be like me veto’ing my doctors decisions in a surgery. Pure negligence.
2) The west de facto betrayed Ukraine by withholding promised critical aid - while they gave themselves pats on the back and would peddle dumb lines like “Russia already lost by invading” - and “we’ll be with you as long as it takes”, whatever the fuck that meant.

Thank you for this soft and respectful tribute to Ukraine's heroes! I'm Ukrainian and I appreciated the film, we also need such documents of our history. Apparently I studied together with Mykhailo Aleksieienko, though we didn't know each other. But a friend of mine once told me about this cool political science student and activist she knew from our studies in Kharkiv, and then she shared that he was killed on the frontline. So I recognized Mykhailo in your movie. Unfortunately Ukraine's best men - young, educated, English speaking, brave and dedicated to their country' future, get killed by Russia's prisoners and mercenaries.

What a powerfull emotional documentary. That mother talking about sending those pictures of food to comfort her son because she knew how important it was and worried so much for her sons safety. I couldnt help but tear up.
God bless these poor Ukrainian souls and watch over them whilst fighting for there lives and freedom.
This video teleported me into the chaos of war on the front lines, I felt for each and everyone of these young brave men and cried too which I'm not ashamed to admit.
My heart goes out to every man woman and child affected by this war and i pray for a successful outcome with the Russians pushed out of Ukraine and peace to return.

Incredible documentary! Much love and shared empathy for Ukraine and her Heroes, both fallen and still fighting. This was a hard one to watch, and just as frustrating not to be able to influence the decision makers abroad.

Wonder if the president of Ukraine ever gets in contact with the soldiers families.
Over 700,000 ukrainian soldiers are reported as missing. So they dont have to pay pensions to the families. Only 31,000 have been marked dead. When they dont return from a assault no matter whats said or known from drones its labeled MIA.
Also a big problem is generals and officers report nothing and keep collecting the paychecks of the gone soldiers.

The average age of a Ukraine soldier is currently 43 years old. This is really something and speaks volumes about the Ukrainian youth who either don't share their elders' sense of patriotism or they don't rate their chances of survival.
Most have skipped the country or using other means to avoid being drafted. Can't say I blame them at this point.
Patriotism can be blinding. Maybe the youth have a clearer vision of the country's leadership and direction.
It’s not the problem. The problem is the Ukrainian government doesn’t want its young to serve. It is suffering from a huge demographic’s problem right now. Any more young men and the economy will collapse taking generations and generations to recover.
@BussySnatcher Young guys of fighting age are now being press-ganged by roaming teams of government enforcers, kidnapped from nightclubs, coffee bars, and even directly off the streets. They're thrown into closed vans and forcefully conscripted if they can't immediately prove their deferment status or ineligibility for the army. Many are not even allowed to go home to say goodbye to their families. And conscription is afoot for about another 350 to 500 thousand men of fighting age, needed to fill the gaps of the widening front and those already killed or wounded.
It's not sustainable though.
Facts . 20 thousand Men have run away illegally to avoid fight with Russia clearly they dont want part of this UN Led war.

This 19-year-old guy could not go to war, because mobilization only at the age of 27, he could go to a safe place and continue to live and work. This is his personal desire and decision, he was not forced.

This is shameful. No one should encourage anyone else to throw away their life. And this war and the violent conflict never were reasonable or justified. Nor was the ethnic hatred which was promoted and encouraged, nor was the sale of the Ukrainian lands to WEF corporations. The lives of ordinary and even powerless people are more valuable and more important than the ambitions of malign and greedy sociopaths.
Yes, war is indeed tragic, for all those involved, and it's also shameful, because it was planned and pursued rather than avoided.
If I may be so bold, I'd like to suggest that the poor, ordinary people, are poor soldiers. Because they our not our best and brightest, most shrewd, cunning, intelligent and successful. And because although they may be easily duped into participating in the conflict, they genuinely lack motivation, due to their inability to properly appreciate the value of being able to establish one's dominion over the people within large territorial areas.
And so, because of this, I suggest that only our "elite" should ever be involved in any of the actual physical conflict, and certainly only those whose net assets can be estimated at over $ 10 million USD, and even then, only if they are not personally opposed to the conflict.
