    Just a few days after Crimeans overwhelmingly voted in a referendum to join Russia, the crisis across the peninsula has taken its first life. In dispatch 15, VICE News' Simon Ostrovsky attends the funeral of the young Tatar man whose body was found this week after he was beaten by Cossacks. this is the most unprejudiced coverage of the conflict i have seen.
    basically they go to everyone and talk to them.
    no matter if russian, no matter if ukrainian, no matter if military, no matter if civilian, no matter if muslim, no matter if angry, no matter if sad...
    they just talk to the people and let them talk.
    and the rest you see for yourselves. some people prefer to talk, other's dont.
    that's valuable insight you dont even have to put emphasis on as a reporter.

      Poor reporter trying to dirty Russia. Crimea has been the territory of Russia since 1783. The "civilized West" have no idea that the Crimea became part of Ukraine thanks to the administrative intervention of the Ukrainians N.With. Khrushchev in the role of boss of the USSR in 1954 - and it was against the will of the population of Crimea. Crimea would be Ukrainian even today, but after an illegal coup with Western financial assistance began persecution of Russians throughout Ukraine - and Crimea is predominantly Russian. Crimea had the status of an autonomous republic with its own parliament, and therefore, according to the UN Charter - the right of nations to self-determination, par. 1, paragraph.2 had the right to a referendum. What is more power than the opinion of the nation ? The vast majority of residents expressed themselves in favor of returning to the assembly of the Russian Federation. The precedent was Kosovo's secession from Serbia due to NATO bombing.

    Why there are Russians in Crimea-
    ...the Crimean Tatars. Russia conquered the Crimean Tatar khanate in 1783. Afterward, the Russian authorities forced the Tatars out of their ancestral homeland and replaced them with settlers from Russia.
    Tens of thousands of Tatars died or were killed; some two-thirds had to leave the Crimea. In 1944, the ethnic cleansing was completed when Stalin expelled the entire Crimean Tatar population -- about 200,000 people -- to Uzbekistan and some other Soviet regions. About half died on the way. It was only in the late 1980s that they began returning to their homeland to find that their land and their homes had been occupied by Russian settlers.
    And what of the Crimean Tatars? Here's Putin: "True, there was a time when Crimean Tatars were treated unfairly, just as a number of other peoples in the USSR. There is only one thing I can say here: Millions of people of various ethnicities suffered during those repressions, and primarily Russians."
    The mendacity is astounding. The Crimean Tatars were not just "treated unfairly" by some vague force. They were subjected to genocide by a Russian totalitarian empire. Russians also "suffered," but the brunt of the suffering fell, as Yale historian Timothy Snyder describes in "Bloodlands," on Poles and Ukrainians....
    -Alexander J. Motyl . Professor, Rutgers University.

Ukraine and Crimea is now a good example what will happen if a country and its people are not willing to have a meaninfull battle what is rightfully theirs. This "conflict" is a good example of submission in front of a superior force and how it's expected that the problem is solved by some one else without any own actions. This is a good wake-up call for many of EU countries and countries outside of EU.

      Yes, I'm an ethnic Russian and I agree that the killers of the Tatar protester should face justice. Alas that is unlikely to happen. But to put this in perspective the Russian annexation of Crimea has thus far resulted in two casualties. The US drone strikes in Pakistan - "There is a debate regarding the number of civilian and militant casualties. An estimated 286 to 890 civilians have been killed, including 168 to 197 children" Wikipedia... I'm waiting for sanctions and asset freezes... seems like a serious violation of sovereignty for a flying robot of a foreign country to kill over 150 children while targeting terrorists.

      Ivan Nikolayev "Pakistan's Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif, has repeatedly demanded an end to the strikes, stating: "The use of drones is not only a continual violation of our territorial integrity but also detrimental to our resolve and efforts at eliminating terrorism from our country".[11] The Peshawar High Court has ruled that the attacks are illegal, inhumane, violate the UN charter on human rights and constitute a war crime.[12] The Obama administration disagrees, contending that the attacks do not violate international law and that the method of attack is precise and effective.[11]"

    Yes, everyone here needs to calm their tits. It's supremely important to understand subtleties of this Crimean situation. It's been sort of neither here nor there for decades now, if not centuries. You can read up on the history of Crimea on your own. The important thing to realize is that it's been an autonomous republic during the modern history. Before that, it had been conquered by pretty much everyone in the ancient Europe. More recently it was populated by Tatars. The very name Crimea is from Qırım, Turkish for steppe and/or hills. When Soviets came into play in the 1920's, the Ukrainian Republic did not include Crimea. Crimea was "gifted" to Ukraine in 1954 by then secretary of Communist Party Nikita Khrushchev. coincidentally Nikita Khrushchev was born near the border with Ukrainian Republic, then grew up in Ukraine. He was the first top Communist who was pretty liberal and he began talking about Stalin's campaign of terror. In any case, Crimea was historically a self governed, autonomous province. Being someone from the region, I can tell you from my first hand account and experiences that the matter of Crimea changing hands again was just a matter of time. Now, my allegiances are with Ukraine and Ukrainian people. I am involved in the Ukrainian struggle for newly found freedom and I am against Putin and his neocolonial, neo-fascist tactics. That being said, I believe what happened with Crimea was pretty much predetermined and to a degree inevitable. Because the native Tatars were displaced by Stalin, Ukraine was populated by Russian speaking people, mostly. As such, it is a Russian-centric autonomy. Putin and his FSB (former KGB) apparatus had been influencing things in Ukraine for 2 decades now. Putin has spies and people working for him in many places in Ukraine, including Kiev (the capital). This is precisely how Yanukovich, the recently deposed President had come to power. His inauguration was the culmination of years of undercover work by Putin and his agents.
    Maidan revolution changed all of that, completely messed up Putin's plans to continue dominating Ukraine and its people. I consider Ukrainians lucky that they were able to fight back and prevail. As you may know, over a hundred people died in that fight. Right now, the new government of Ukraine is weak. There are still agents of Russian influence in Verhovna Rada (Ukrainian Parliament), people who continue carrying out Putin's agenda. Ukraine is just not ready or able to fight for Crimea, nor should it pursue that fight. Setting the legality of Crimean "referendum", conducted under barrel of Putin's gun aside, it is totally feasible that most of the Russian ethnic people in Crimea may hold allegiances to Russia. Besides, they have always been autonomous so they are certainly entitled to make the epic mistake. Crimean people need to realize that was the last such "referendum" allowed to them, as in Putin's Russia there are no such freedoms for its subjects.
    Trying to engage Putin's army militarily would only provoke Russians further and would give them an excuse to continue attacking and perhaps take all of Ukraine. Also, Putin's propaganda would frame the war as being initiated by Ukraine, and "Bandera stormtroopers", and probably NATO and America. I also get sick to my stomach thinking about innocent lives lost and blood spilled. It would be nothing short of American Civil War where brothers and neighbors were at each other's throats. That turn of events would be detrimental to Ukraine, and positive for Russia as an excuse for further military campaign. Besides, as many had already pointed out, the Crimea may be gone for now, but who says it won't come back at some time in the future? Like a slutty ex-girlfriend who leaves you at the first sign of trouble or a lost job, these types of people are usually unhappy anywhere they go.
    So my fellow Ukrainians, хлопці, those in Europe, America and elsewhere in the world who stand in solidarity with our fight for freedoms, don't spill any tears for Crimea. Crimea is not worth crying over. Let's focus our efforts on building new Ukraine, free and open to all. Free of Putin's influences. Please believe me, free Ukrainian people and the banner of freedom on the border with Russia will scare Putin and his junta more than any ballistic missile would. Let's serve as positive example to all people, including Russians. Afterall, our people stood together and have made it through the thin and thick, let's not allow Putin drive a wedge between us. I hope one day Russia will too gain its independence and will stand tall, as open and free society.

    • @dunholm1
      @dunholm1 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      ***** The Ukrainians have been wise not to give Herr Putin the excuse he so desperately wants to go further than he already has. That he and he alone provoked this situation is clear to any unbiased person. I personally found it telling that the state security forces of Yanukovych, the Berkut who are considered complicit in the murder of unarmed civilians in Kiev are now intimidating and assaulting all who stand in their way in Crimea. That these blue-uniformed and balaclava-wearing thugs are now being treated as heroes by the ethnic Russians speaks volumes. Military intervention by the West is out of the question as it could lead to WW3. That said, a strong response is needed or Herr Putin will feel he can get away with anything. The European nations appeased Hitler, and look where that led. I wish you and your country well in the face of this unprovoked aggression.

    I've enjoyed this series. It has been an educational eye opening look at the people on the ground there is this volatile region. What's really distressing to me is the way these journalists are trying to make it seem like most of the citizens are anti Russian. Why cant they put the story out without a sensationalist spin? These people for the most part are pro Russian and cant stand the way the media in the West is never portraying it properly. And on another note, why does it matter so much to us if these people want closer ties to Russia? Russia is a regional power with a significant amount of influence, and these people probably feel very anxious about the way their country has been peddled to the highest bidding crooks and sold out to some sort of NATO ploy to continue its isolation of Russia. NEWSFLASH- the citizens of the world cannot be manipulated by simple propaganda as effectively as we once were. People are waking up. We cant just hate on Russia because they are semi-pseudo Democratic/communist. Who cares how they choose to run their nation? I don't hate on Russia because they don't espouse the same values in government as we do. We are a different type of people, but we are all human. The united states and specifically NATO have been involved in numerous conflicts. For NATO (who say they are for the promotion of peace) to be involved in these acts despite the fact that its member states have never been attacked by another nation ever in history is astounding. This is slanted journalist. A few of these "dispatches" back, Simon was showing the Navy and how scary it must've been for them being blockaded and all the Russian propaganda. Now, two American warships are in the black sea right now as we speak and in violation of the Montreux convention governing the use of the straights to non Black sea members. Say fuck it to international law and the media doesn't breathe a word. But when the Russians fly a jet by these warships the press have a field day talking about Russian provocations. Its a tragedy that this Simon guy hasn't changed his opinion even after all the people he encounters except for a small group here and there are anti-west. The United States and her allies are hypocritical shit disturbers and I live in the western world. I think the people who believe the story coming out of the Western news outlets are the minority when it comes to the global views of the people (not the leaders)

      Dude, it's very simple: When a nation uses superior military force to annex another sovereign nation, you call them out on it. Doesn't matter if it's Russia, China, EU, NATO, CSTO or the fucking Molotov-Ribbentrop pact pulling some shit - it's not a very polite thing to do. Today, it happens to be Russia pulling some shit. If Crimea wants to secede, fine, but do so in an orderly fashion and not at a record-setting pace with black ops Spetsnaz milling about. How do you know they're pro-russia "for the most part"? NOBODY KNOWS SHIT - IT'S A WAR ZONE. If the will of the people is was damn important, dudes with guns would back off and maybe they'd have a vote 4 years from now. Then they could join the Federation of the Moon for all I care, but that's not how it's gone down, is it?

      Metamusik dude, you have no idea what your talking about. This is hardly Spetznas. And, I know they are pro-Russian, because thats what they literally are. The citizens there have basically boycotted giving interviews to western media because they always turn around and paint a very different picture......thats why you always see them saying no cameras in these videos. Anyway, you could probably use some persepective, so here you go.
      Russian forces have been allowed in the Crimean Peninsula for years now. This type of historically accurate fact for some reason gets whitewashed or removed as spam rather then for you to hear them and possibly change your world-view. Its called propaganda. Propaganda has been at play since the first civilizations came into being on the planet Earth. Rulers long ago decided it was a more than wise idea to get the majority of the populace behind them in regards to any political or militaristic move they were intent on making, because if the people believed it was their own "will" then the aspirations and wishes of those in power would have a much easier time pushing their individual objectives and agendas through (however nefarious they were or were not)
      Russia is legally allowed (under internationally recognized agreements signed between the Russian Federation and the nation of Ukraine)Under the terms of this agreement, Russia is entitled to have 25,000 troops on the peninsula and currently has an estimated 16,000 deployed there. Why the Western worlds media spins this mutually accepted agreement into an "invasion" on the part of Russia, is not only a direct insult to our intelligence, but also a bold faced lie.
      Here are some other illuminating facts you might not have known about which I am sure will be marked as spam and removed. Read quickly then, before your lied to from somewhere else and get convinced this is something its not.
      This is all information that any one of you could find on-line if you were inclined to look for yourselves instead of listening to those ridiculous media parrots squawking about this or that. All of the "breaking news" they say is fresh off the press
      Read em quickly, because this wont be up long, and if it is, its because I just said that"
      anyway
      In 1997, amid the wreckage of the USSR, Russia & Ukraine signed a Partition Treaty determining the fate of the military bases and vessels in Crimea. The deal sparked widespread officer ‘defections’ to Russia and was ratified by the Russian & Ukrainian parliaments in 1999. Russia received 81.7 percent of the fleet’s ships after paying the Ukrainian government US$526.5 million.
      The deal allowed the Russian Black Sea Fleet to stay in Crimea until 2017. This was extended by another 25 years to 2042 with a 5-year extension option in 2010.
      Moscow annually writes off $97.75 million of Kiev’s debt for the right to use Ukrainian waters and radio frequencies, and to compensate for the Black Sea Fleet’s environmental impact.
      The Russian navy is allowed up to
      - 25,000 troops,
      - 24 artillery systems with a calibre smaller than 100 mm,
      - 132 armoured vehicles, and
      - 22 military planes, on Crimean territory.
      Five Russian naval units are stationed in the port city of Sevastopol, in compliance with the treaty:
      - The 30th Surface Ship Division formed by the 11th Antisubmarine Ship Brigade. Comprises the Black Sea Fleet’s flagship guard missile cruiser Moskva as well as Kerch, Ochakov, Smetlivy, Ladny, and Pytlivy vessels, and the 197th Landing Ship Brigade, consisting of seven large amphibious vessels;
      - The 41st Missile Boat Brigade includes the 166th Fast Attack Craft Division, consisting of Bora and Samum hovercrafts as well as small missile ships Mirazh and Shtil, and 295th missile Boat Division;
      - The 247th Separate Submarine Division, consisting of two diesel submarines - B-871 Alrosa and B-380 Svyatoy Knyaz Georgy;
      - The 68th Harbor Defense Ship Brigade formed by 4 vessels of the 400th Antisubmarine Ship Battalion and 418 Mine Hunting Ship Division respectively.;
      - The 422nd Separate Hydrographic Ship Division boasts the Cheleken, Stvor, Donuzlav and GS-402 survey vessels and hydrographic boats.
      Russia has two airbases in Crimea, in Kacha and Gvardeysky.
      Russian coastal forces in Ukraine consist of the 1096th Separate Anti-Aircraft Missile Regiment in Sevastopol and the 810th Marine Brigade, which hosts around 2,000 marines.
      Russian naval units are permitted to implement security measures at their permanent post as well as during re-deployments in cooperation with Ukrainian forces, in accordance with Russia’s armed forces procedures.
      Authorities in the Ukrainian Autonomous Republic of Crimea - where over half the population is Russian - requested Moscow’s assistance after the self-proclaimed government in Kiev introduced a law abolishing the use of languages other than Ukrainian in official circumstances.
      Last week, Russia’s Federation Council unanimously approved President Vladimir Putin’s request to send the country’s military forces to Ukraine to ensure peace and order in the region “until the socio-political situation in the country is stabilized.”
      However, the final say about deploying troops lies with Putin, who hasn't yet made such a decision, stressing that deploying military force would be a last resort.

      @infantiltinferno 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes, well done with that copypasta. But here's the thing: They're allowed 25.000 troops wearing UNIFORM and identifying themselves as Russian Federation troops. So where's the cute little flags on the shoulder? They're certainly not allowed to camp out at Ukrainian installations wearing mystery kit, disarming people in actual uniforms. Or do you seriously believe that the green men are just local militia, that just happen to be highly equipped and disciplined, after all that preaching about propaganda?
      "The citizens" you speak off are a handful of drunks and fanatics that mill around cameramen. The actual opinions of the population are obscure. If I was a pro-Ukrainian living in Crimea, I'd stfu about it right now, because heavily armed men might take offence. I certainly wouldn't run out to the press and tell my life story when people are vanishing in the night and my neighbour keeps ranting on about "provocateurs" and masonic conspiracies.

    • @vividnevets
      @vividnevets 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      who cares who the green men are? they wouldn't even be there if this isolation of Russia game being played by NATO since 1990 hadn't involved the installation of a puppet government in Kiev (who just happen to have some pretty radical views on dealing with all the Jews and Muscovites in Ukraine)
      This is turning into a proxy war between the US and Russia because the US do not want to lose their new found influence (pro EU pro NATO pro US policy) in the area to a grass-roots movement being conducted by the Russian speaking citizens in Eastern Ukraine.
      You think people are disappearing in the night by the truckload and being killed by KGB spies? LOL If so, Your incorrect. Do you believe some nefarious plot aimed at world conquest is being orchestrated by the evil doers in Moscow? Scared that communism might spread? The fact that you think this is just a handful of drunks is 1000% ludicrous. You also believe that the views and wishes of the Russian speaking citizens in the East of Ukraine are "obscure" and that's the point right there where I realized you didn't know what the fuck you were talking about to begin with. What they want and what they are upset about is clear. Your just led into believing it isn't. That is *Exactly* why i "preached" about propaganda.
      Pro-Kiev forces are burning them alive during the day. How many was it? 36 dead? and when they tried to escape the flames they were shot dead by supporters of the illegitimate Kiev puppet government.
      Hows that for democracy hard at work. This puppet government is not backed by the majority of the population in the East, where citizens of Ukraine(Russian speaking and other Slavic people also) are not contend to sell out their country to NATO and the EU and would rather maintain ties with Russia.
      Of course being the retarded petulant child you are, and having no actual life experiences involving the subject matter, your opinion is not only outrageously wrong, but also so in line with the "official" story being told you'd think you could look some of this up on your own instead of being some sort of media turd parrot and saying things like the people of Crimea had to vote because Putin put a gun to their head, or Putin plans to invade Ukraine and then maybe us. Russian communist scum want to eat all our first born sons. They want to turn America into a socialist republic. etc. etc.
      The fact of the matter is, and I also know in reference to my family, personally, they see Mr. Putin as a modern day Russian hero now who has brought the once proud Russian people back together and a man who has attempted to unite us (Russians all over the globe) together while bringing us to the forefront of the world stage and also as a man who has handled the situation in Crimea with a deft and steady hand while brushing off the threatening isolating behaviour of the imperialistic American Empire.
      There was talk of Visa and Mastercard being part of the sanctions until those companies shit themselves when the Russian Federation announced their own national banking cards would be released to counter this proposal and Visa and Mastercard would lose boatloads
      Sanctions are an act of war
      The US sanctions in Iraq after desert storm killed half a million children yet we barely bat an eyelash. In Korea, sanctions have also killed million of already poor and starving people, yet we all resist the urge to look at them while they die. Their eyes would haunt us forever if we did, s we keep our heads buried in the sand because we are told everything will be all right.
      You are seriously off of the truth by about billion miles, but you wouldn't know that would you?
      You think its just a few drunk Russians and a hand full of fanatics trying to create a problem in an area where the people just want to be left alone and have absolute faith in their new leaders. This is a catastrophic error in judgement and is the *One and Only* reason why in these dispatches we always hear the pro Russian "militants" ask the cameras to be turned off, and that's because they understand that the news media is spinning this story to the western viewers and painting a wholly inaccurate picture. I am Ukrainian. Although I live in Canada now I still have relatives over there who live in Luhansk and Kharkiv. Im pretty sure I have a pretty unique perspective on this. yeah. Must be those masonic conspiracies you speak of. Do you really think this has anything to do with Masons or illuminati or 9-11 or anything like that dip-shit? Its fucktards like you that think everyone else has on a tinfoil hat and in the process conveniently forgets to check what kind of hat your wearing.
      This has nothing to do with any of that you god damn genius.
      And while we are at it, pick up a fucking book every now and then. Stick to subjects where you have more than just a passing interest in. However, if you wish to argue I can educate you

      Wow, that was a really impressive rant. Lucky for me someone +1 a comment so I came back to read it. Funny how recent events illustrates my point quite well: When Kiev forces retake separatist areas, everyone cheers, at least to the cameras. It's a very basic point of survival: Cheer the guys holding the guns. Until the guns go away, everything is speculation. Another thing that's funny is how you seem to assume that personal and emotional ties makes you less biased. I'm arguing ignorance - You're arguing perfect, statistical knowledge based on having a handful of relatives with very definite views. That's probably the centrepiece in this amusing farce of a discussion. You should try reading a book about epistemology, it would do you good.

      1. Who said they are russians? And how can you see the difference between russians and ukrainians? I am russian, and i know there is no difference. Some are angry, some drunk, some nazis, etc. in every country and place. I'll bring you an example. I am russian, 32 years old. I never drink alcohol (never and nothing). I hit a man just once in my life, to protect myself. Why Vice do not show people like me? Maybe I am the only one? The Perfect.. and other 150 millions are angry and drunk. Why he is still alive working in Crimea? And why it is so dangerous to work in Kiev if you like something russian?
      2. Not a very happy place.. yeap.. when it was Ukraine it was totaly different. Now Putin said "Crimea is Russia!" and rivers become blood, people become drunk russians, and everyone found a granade in his pocket and become angry...
      Please, guys, think and analyse what you see and hear. I know much great europeans, americans, russians and ukrainians. Please, distinguish propoganda with real things. Thank you.

      Бедный репортер, пытающийся осыпать грязью Россию. Крым был территорией России с 1783 года. "Цивилизованный Запад" не имеет представления, что Крым стал частью Украины благодаря administrativnímu вмешательства Украинца Хрущева в роли главы СССР в 1954 году . Это было против воли жителей Крыма. Крым был бы украинский и сегодня, но после незаконного государственного переворота с западной финансовой помощи началось преследование Русских по всей Украине и особенно в Крыму. Крым получил статус Автономной Республики с собственным парламентом,и поэтому, согласно Уставу ООН, он имел право на самоопределение народов, параграф 1, параграф.2 было правильно провести референдум. Какая сила и право больше, чем мнение нации ? Большая часть населения высказалась на референдуме после возвращения на заседание Российской Федерации. Прецедентом было разделение Косово от Сербии после бомбардировок войск США и НАТО. Я из Чехии.
