Inside Rebel-Held Uglegorsk: Russian Roulette (Dispatch 94)

  • Despite the recent Minsk peace agreement, fighting is continuing in eastern Ukraine, with pro-Russia separatists (DNR) and Ukrainian forces engaging in combat around the town of Debaltseve, which was encircled by the DNR. The nearby town of Uglegorsk, which was captured by the rebels during their push towards Debaltseve last week, has been battered by artillery shelling, with the nearly deserted streets bearing the scars of fierce fighting.
    VICE News crossed into the DNR-held territory of Uglegorsk on the eve of the February 15 ceasefire to speak with soldiers and residents about the prospect of a truce.

    During WWII Soviet Union occupied my country and forcefully deported over 100,000 people to Siberia, many of whom were kids. Afterwards Soviets colonised my country with ethnic Russians.
    As I now look at the events in Ukraine I notice, on many occasions, that the so called separatists are not only actively promoting, but embracing Soviet values and ideology. The re-emergence of Soviet idealism and Soviet imperialism in Russia and within Russian-speaking communities is extremely worrying to me.
    How would Jews feel if Germans would start to re-embrace and re-invent national socialism?
    Fighters in "Novorussia" are not freedom fighters, they do not fight for freedom or their families. How can they be freedom fighters when they embrace a regime that killed millions? Novorussia is a complete lie. We've seen novorussia in Transnistria, Balkan Wars, Chechnya and Georgia. When will you wake up?

    Wow these guys can offend soldiers, animals, an entire people in less than 5 minutes-
    Poroshenko presented a peace plan right after he got elected. He unilaterally declared a ceasefire on June 20.
    "Separatists" response? I seem to remember something about an Ukrainian helicopter getting shot down and all occupants getting killed, right after Borodai promised to abide by the ceasefire... but Poroshenko, the blood-thirthy exterminator of russians in east ukraine, extended the ceasefire for 3 more days, with many protesting the decision.
    Funny thing is that his plan was remarkably similar to the one drawn up in Minsk later in September (and again to the one in February) - the thing that probably made a difference was that Putin now offered more than "some support" to it and Lavrov didn't call it an ultimatum. Everything that happened after the peace plan of Poroshenko is the fault of the "separatists".
    Every soldier, every civilian, every "comrade" that died is YOUR FAULT, PRO-RUSSIANS.
    Merely stating this - not looking for a discussion so that you idiots call me a nazi, fascist, jew, fuck, threaten to kill me and my family, etc (I had a lovely 1 hour tour of RT comment section after which I was banned, same on youtube comment section, not banned there though)

      Don't forget the civilian airliner that was shot down, and the separatists bragged about it on the web. Then when they realized it was a commercial airliner they removed all of the comments made on social media. And wouldn't even let U.N observers into the crash site to do an analysis. The blood of those innocent people is on their hands.

    • @emceesick1439
      @emceesick1439 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      snakeies66 if it could be proven by the west that the novorossia army was responsible for shooting down the airliner it would have been front page news on blast 24/7. Instead the story has quietly slipped off the radar of our (the west) mainstream media propaganda channels. Reason can only be that Ukraine shot it down either for false flag or because they thought it was Putins plane and western powers want the whole thing dropped now.

      Well the German intelligence did say the "separatists" shot down the aircraft. Not sure what proof they have (didn't check) but apparently they are reliable for pro-russians when they say that 50,000 people have died (but only reliable for them when it blames Ukraine, otherwise it is a tool of propaganda just like the OSCE, UN, HRW, Amnesty, etc when they also blame the separatists).

      Russia are the ones that said MH17 was shot down by Ukraine because they thought it was Putin. I seem to remember a moscow airport guy stating that it was a lie because Putin's airplane hadn't entered Ukrainian airspace in months - not to mention I doubt Ukraine would have allowed Putin to enter their airspace. Also, that Su-25 Kremlin theory is plain stupidity.

      So because the official language in Ukraine is Ukrainian and not Russian, people decided they were going to get up in arms and cause thousands of deaths and destruction on a scale which would require decades of reparations? Sounds like a fantastic idea.

    • @asArsenic
      @asArsenic 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      PANTSMONSTER66 Welcome to Russian propaganda 101, such a law never existed despite russian media reporting on it.
      Besides the timing is wrong, seperatists taking territory in Donetsk and Luhansk started shortly after Yanukovych left office. The rest of his government was mostly still in power and would be until six months later during the Rada elections. Also, Poroshenko was just as democratically elected as Yanukovych about a month after Seperatism began.
      A new government didn't exist to pass unfair laws when seperatism started. Lets just call it what it is, an attempted power grab by thugs in a destablized country.

    • @asArsenic
      @asArsenic 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      PANTSMONSTER66 Declaring yourself a seperate country does kind of exclude you from the political process. You've engaged in a very different kind of political process.
      A month is plenty of time to organize an election if you aren't American. Besides, even the Kremlin stated that that election was valid and representative.
      The seperation referendums have a number of problems that Poroshenko's election does not. First off, they are unconstitutional. Under Ukrainian constitutional law a referendum can only be valid if the entire population gets to vote in the matter.
      Now, one can argue that in those regions Ukrainian law does not apply, but then whose law does? Russia? Then that means they have already effectively annexed the territory and are holding the referendum after the fact.
      This raises issues that you really cannot guarantee that the vote is representative because the entity holding it has a vested interest in maintaining it's political influence in the region.
      Another thing to keep in mind is that for example the Crimean vote had two options, independence from Ukraine or annexation by Russia. It had no option to remain with Ukraine. Can that referendum truely be called representative?

    • @asArsenic
      @asArsenic 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      PANTSMONSTER66
      Which falls again into propaganda territory. After Yanukovych fled most of his government was still in power and would remain so until the Rada elections six months later.
      That just isn't a coup.
      They also attempted to hold votes in Donetsk, Luhansk but were prevented from doing so by the seperatists themselves. You cannot have it both ways.

    As a fan of Vice news and it's reporting of the events not only in Ukraine, but around the world, I must say that i'm disappointed that they seem to be just as biased as RT on this matter. I am a Russian speaker who happens to live in the US. A lot of the translation they do from Russian is incredibly sensationalized.
    For instance, towards the end of the video, When the subtitles show the DNR soldier saying, "I will be evil for the rest of my life", they used the literal google-translate translation of the word "Zloy" which in context means i will be extremely angry/ butthurt about what i've seen here over the last few months. Not evil. The man isn't turning into Sauron or Emperor Palpatine here... He's seen some of his best buddies die in the last few days and weeks, all he is saying is that he's going to be pretty salty about that and the Ukranian leadership's decisions for quite some time.

    It's funny how they blame it all on Poroshenko when in fact he only reacted to a hotbed of armed disorder which any country would do. Rebel's ex-Army leader Strelkov, FSB officer, literally proclaimed that if it wasn't for him and his troops nothing would have happened as the actual separatists, quite few at the moment, would have been defeated within weeks. At the same time it's pretty explainable as the people shown in the video are obviously not right in the head, literally.
    If my Russian fellow countrymen had a little more dignity and critical thinking in them, the bloodshed would have stopped months ago.

      Empathy is hard for some people. Generally, the pro-Russia people, most notably the ones in the fighting, lack certain empathy for their brothers.
      The Russian said it himself. He's evil, but only because he thinks that Ukraine is the aggressor. He just doesn't understand that Russia is egging on pro-Russia private militias in order to conquer all of eastern Europe probably all the way up to Poland. That doesn't matter to him though because he thinks that that land is Russia's.
      He thinks that the war is necessary and that it's only being prolonged because the Ukranians aren't surrendering. Ukraine knows that if they surrender, Russia wll keep moving forwards and bring 1940s Soviet law into practise in various regions.

    Something felt a bit off from this dispatch unlike the others and not because its being filmed on the other side for once, but I feel that this dispatch was heavily constrained. For instance, these weren't really clips of interviews as the reporters weren't asking any questions, which is a first for vice news probably out of fear. Plus it was only like what 4 minutes? They were probably being told what to filmed in this dispatch imo, as this dispatch feels very disconnected and unreal, unlike their footage on the Ukrainian side in which they have the freedom to ask what they choose and film what they want.

    Bad translation in the subtitles. At the end, the rebel soldier says he is "zloy" and that he will be "zloy" for the rest of his life because of the deaths of his 12 comrades. "Zloy" translates two ways - one way means evil, the other means angry or mad. The translator put it as "evil" so you have the rebel saying he's evil and that he's going to be evil for the rest of his life. He was really just saying that he's upset.

      x01B The shrill voices calling everybody nazis with no appearant knowledge of neither historic national socialism, nor disgruntled, racist neonazism are all pro-russians. There is no question in my mind now, after 8 months of strife in Ukraine - and before that the many, many instances of russian chicanery of Ukraine via gazprom - from where the most harmfull propaganda is coming from
      I have no illusions as to western capitalistic imperialism, and I oppose it in Word, action and writing. But the "anti-russia"-propaganda you are telling me to stay clear comes from the mouth of a rebel leader, in this very video. He is wearing a blue hat if you have trouble seeing him. Also, take a good, hard and long look at the corpse lying in the ruins of a bombed house, also in this video. What kind of people would let it lie there for the dogs to eat - even casualy commenting on it with no regard to the horror of it.
      Wake up, man. Put your love front and center and it will become petty clear that this conflict is only going one way. Mushroom clouds on the Horizon - now, who wants that?!? who, in their right minds?

    You cannot base your soldiers around civillians and attack from that position, then blame the other side when they return fire on your position inadvertently killing innocent people.

    1:30 WRONG TRANSLATION. HE SAID "Don't expect ot be spared, UKRY", not "UKRAINIANS".
    He WAS NOT talking about ALL UKRAINIANS, he meant UKRAINIAN ARMY.

    0:36 Ammo rack blown up probably, you wouldnt want to be in that tank when it got hit (probably artillery?)

  • @Macorian

    He doesn't say "I will be evil" but "I will be bad", meaning feel bad, be in a bad state. What kind of a translation is this? Have you ever had somebody close killed. Amazing restrained from the DNR-guy.

  • @pwrserge83
    @pwrserge83 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Your translation is wonky. At 4:10 he was saying he would be "angry" for life, not "evil"... Might want to get your translator checked out. That's not a minor mistake.

      The people of Ukraine protested against the corrupted dictatorship under Yanokovich.
      Meanwhile , Russia invaded Crimea just like they did in Georgia ,Moldova and Chechniya except they deployed PMC"s to fight the ukranian army and didnt invade it officially

    Vice reporters and crew members are so brave to go to both sides of the battle field to report what is happening on the other side. No other western news does anything like this. Thank you for bringing this information to us. I hope one day soon the fighting stops, but from these past reports I know that even if the two governments hug it out the people will still feel hate for each other. I do have a question. Was that solider in the bed being kept as a pow?

    I am so glad that the russians I have met in real life, even if they support the separatists, aren't like the ones in RT, youtube, etc.
    They don't call you nazi for disagreeing with you and they don't think everything with the separatists is awesome and that they have done so much shit.
