I agree with you guys, collecting for GameCube is crazy right now. But to play devils advocate, to buy a ps5 is $500, and games are $60-$70 each (which will not hold their value). So I suppose it’s about perspective. GameCube is way more expensive to collect for than ps2, but still cheaper (and arguable more fun) than playing current gen!

I know you’re playing devil’s advocate but those really are apples to oranges. Yeah, if you buy PS5 games on launch, they are expensive. But if you wait just a few months, you can often either get them for half the price or they’ll show up on Game Pass.

I bought a used Wii off of Amazon for $80 in 2014. It had 2 controllers, the motion plus accessory, wii sports, 2, and a nunchuck. I didn’t even think much about why it came with a gamecube controller and memory cards until I finally realized it was the backwards compatible model! The GameCube was noticably more powerful than PS2, it's the small storage media that held it back. Just look at the downgrade that was needed to port Resident Evil 4 to PS2 as an example.

Something to consider: The GameCube is more valuable than others because it appealed to a younger demographic - more so than the PS2 and Xbox. Therefore, many people playing/collecting GameCube were much younger, whereas college students/adults were more the market for Xbox and PS2 back in the day.
As such, the adults moved on, but the kids from then are wanting to buy back their memories now. The age in which you played the games directly correlates to their value today.
Fun episode guys, keep up the content!

It's b/c it was the better console. It had the controller the cube design, four player option, I think many games on it sucked personally, but they had a certain quality about them. The game cases were cooler also than PS2 and Xbox, (especially in Europe). I said at the time people will realise in the future the GC is better.

  • @tybread2997
    @tybread2997 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I completely agree that it is just stupid to try and start to collect for the Gamecube right now. For us average gamers that just want to play the games, it's irritating that there is people out there that just buy games to place on a shelf and stare at them. I know you guys don't do that because you routinely go through what you play or don't play. A couple things to note though. Spice orange controller was available in US. It's not rare if someone tries to tell you that. Most accessories are dirt cheap through Japan. Currently, the Gamecube player can be purchased for cheap without the disk. There is a memory card you can purchase to boot from a select amount of games to be able to play the Gameboy games. Which is awesome. For the Gamecube prices overall, they seemed to have gone up when the more recent HDMI adapters came out. If I tried to play through composite to any HD TV, the Gamecube looks like straight garbage. I personally have the EON Mk II and the Retrotink. I prefer to play using the S-Video through the Retrotink though. It just looks better to me. It's just great that there is actual options for everyone but with a price.

It’s always been shocking to me that the GameCube was underrated as much as it is. I grew up with the Indigo system when it was released. I had Sunshine, Luigi’s Mansion, Gale of Darkness, Spider-Man, Hulk, etc. They were always so fun to play. Sucks that after I moved out of my parents like 5 years back to live with my gf I ended up forgetting about it and they ended up moving and left it there. So I ended up buying the XD: Gale of Darkness version since Pokémon is my favorite franchise. Love the GameCube and glad it’s getting some popularity now.

I play a lot of Gamecube games, but I play them on my Wii even though I do have an actual Gamecube. The reasons are: 1) The Wii has inexpensive HDMI adapters available so the picture looks better than composite or component. 2) The Wii can be modded to play games from a USB drive with no need to actually put a disc in to play a game. 3) The Wii is a more powerful system than the GC was.

I was an early adopter of the GameCube. I was torn between all 3 consoles at the time. My favorite game at the time was Resident Evil on the PS1, so when I saw the remaster and it was a GameCube exclusive, I had to buy it first. I was seen as the weirdo out of all my friends and I remember being ridiculed for being a GameCube fan in the old GamePro forums lol. People would call it the "kidcube" "crapcube" and other ridiculous stuff. I eventually bought all 3, but the GameCube definitely has a special place in my game room. Great videos guys!

I was an Xbox dude. It's for grown ups, right? Then I saw Wind Waker. Holy crap! That stuck with me. Years later I got a Wii. But I hated the controls. So I started getting into GC, right when games were in the $5-15 range. I used to have an awesome collection. Then... I got divorced. Somehow I hung on to a few good ones and managed to rebuy stuff like Wave Race or F-Zero on the cheap. What I would recommend is buying a used compatible Wii, focus on say 5 games you want. I think with Switch Nintendo is going to start getting out GC titles. That should make the originals drop.
And, look at alternatives. New Play Control Pikmin 1-2 and the DK Bongo game run pretty reasonable I think as well as say Smash Brawl instead of Melee. RPGs probably won't see a drop unfortunately. The big games like Paper Mario will eventually be released again. That's got to be your thinking. Good luck!

That is so interesting to me, I wonder if the gamecube had certain demographics. Back around 2002-2004 in Tampa, FL, almost everyone I knew had a gamecube and that was a LOT of people. I hung out mostly with nerds and goths (still do). They typically had the Gamecube in Indigo and outside of Super Smash Bros. the Mario games weren't very popular with them. They mostly played the Resident Evil series, Time Splitters series, Eternal Darkness, Zelda series, Soul Calibur, Viewtiful Joe and a lot of the cross-platform stuff. It's just funny because I always hear that hardly anyone knew someone with a Gamecube but my circle back then could have easily expanded out to probably 60-70 lowballed people because Tampa was just like that back then and lots of them had Gamecubes.

I was really lucky how I got mine. It's a silver one and my brother just didn't have the space or time and he gave me his. But he already had two Metroid prime games, resident evil, rogue squadron 2 and 3 as well as nightfire and agent under fire for it. So I got some good games and the console with two memory cards for free. Since then I've gotten hitman 2 for it because it's the only hitman they released on it and twin snakes which I lucked out and got a copy for like 30 bucks and last time I was at my local game store they were selling it for like 70 so I definitely got a good deal. I want to continue to collect for it but they are right the prices for it have just gone so far up.

I already own a GameCube Nintendo, but for those that do not, the system and many of it’s games have aged pretty well except for the fact that you’ll mostly be playing in 4:3 screen aspect ratio (unfortunately).
I’ll add that if it weren’t for me picking up a GCN around the time it launched, NO ONE in my household would be playing it. My cousins/friends moved on to XBOX for Halo multiplayer online and PlayStation 2 for Capcom releases and Grand Theft Auto series.
It’s funny how back then, just about everyone thought it wasn’t cool to own/play Nintendo games, but nowadays, between the Sega Dreamcast, PS2, XBOX, and GCN, the GCN is the one system whose game prices are rising quickly and has the most overall interest.

I remembering owning a N64 and wanting to play FF7 so badly that I meet this guy too buy his PSX in a super shady deal while I was still in middle school. I did get caught by the same bug to get a PS2 like everyone else once I even HEARD about GTA3 (I had actually played GTA2 but this transition to 3D sound nuts). Through it all, though, I have always kept my love for Nintendo. So my first credit card purchase I ever made during my freshmen year was to buy a Gamecube. It was the strange little system that I wasn’t quite sure what the big N’s plan was with it but I sure had all the big releases. So I have had around 20-30 Gamecube games traveling around with me for years. In fact, it wasn’t until Nintendo released the Wii U that I stopped buying every home console by Nintendo (though now I own two Wii U’s but that’s a whole other story).

The RetroWolf intro was perfect for this video. Also, Lady Laci loves the GC for the handle and the tiny discs. I've hard the smaller discs were supposed to help shut down piracy a bit more, maybe so, maybe no. It was weird though, for sure, not having any sort of DVD functionality. The online bit, I get that a little more--it was still pretty fresh to be getting online with consoles, but still, weird bit of timing.
Woooo! Yeah, show off that Spice Orange GC boo-yeah!!! The Wavebird is such an incredible controller--we always keep an eye out for them, so we'll have you boys in mind. GameBoy Player is the bomb! Nintendo needs to do something like this for DS & 3DS games now!
One of our favorite things about GC now--is having a Zelda game to look forward to working on with you guys next time we're together!
Twin Snakes is soooo good! I loved what they did with it and still enjoy it and the original MGS.
Ha ha--you used a clip from The Jerk! Nice!
Agree that GC pricing has gotten sooo out of control...I think part of it is the age range of those who grew up with it--they're recapturing that childhood--BUT it's also the "oddball" out of that generation. I think this will work in the favor of making PS2 and Xbox more collectible as focus shifts to those systems because the GC is too niche and too pricey.

Got my GameCube back in the day (Zelda pack-in) and have huge nostalgia for it. It’s an amazing console but I 100% agree that it’s not worth it, especially because of the amazing deal elsewhere. As you say, if you want Nintendo, collect for the Wii U. If you want 6th gen, collect for the OG Xbox and PS2. Incredible deals to be had on all three systems (though OGX is seeing price creep and may take off soon). But if you do collect, Rebel Strike is the absolute must buy. You get the base game (great flying levels mixed with crappy on foot levels) you get almost all of Tough Leader to play in couch co-op, you get the three arcade games s unlockables AND you get the single greatest corporate splash screen in gaming history.

I had a modded GameCube with both videoout ports and a matching Game Boy Player when these were all new and I lost _everything_ to circumstance. I don’t collect, but I trust my instincts so I’m triple dipping on my Switch and doubling and tripling down on Digital Games (the Bethesda Shooters primarily) so that I have some form of _hard copy_ of the games that I love. It’s not for collecting purposes, it’s for future proofing.
This was fun. Nice energy! Great Stuff!

It’s good to see someone spreading the love for the GC... it would be easy to say that the current nonsense is behind the price increases but there is far more to it than that. Kudos to you two 👍

I kept much from back in the day, and as for the microphone, Odama was the best game. A pinball RTS game with voice commands, really unique. GBA link, I'd say Pacman VS, and a 3d map in Splinter Cell Chaos Theory I believe, were my favourite uses, after of course Four Swords Adventures. The bongo's were also used in this incredible, very unique sidescroller, DK Jungle Beat. Since I've collected for it throughout almost two decades, from scraping my last money to buy my first secondhand tv console, to spendingbway too much on game collecting, to now having stopped my collecting nearly entirely, I've almost built up a complete 16 player Double Dash setup (just missing the extra tv's)... that sits in my old room back at my moms house while I live in a cabin in the forest with just my Switch.

Just wanna let you guys know that through a new homebrew method using a Raspberry Pi Pico, you can now boot right into homebrew.
So you no longer need to use a modchip, save game exploit, or hilariously priced disc to use the Game Boy Player.

Probably. The original wii might be a better option. Metal Jesus has made several videos on the Cube.
It sounds stupid, but I feel like I missed out. I was playing Xbox. Which is fine. The Suffering is great. But I outgrew my teenage angst.
I didn't care for the Zelda games for awhile. Heresy. But I went to pick up a girl for a date and her roommate was playing Wind Waker. I was floored. The snes game and N64 didn't impress me.
This was different. It's messed up I think about the game more than the chick, but sometimes that's how it goes.
I was lucky enough to pick up GC games on the cheap, but my ex wife "lost" them.
But man, that controller. It made me fall in love with Nintendo again. Chibi Robo, Pikmin 1-2, stuff like that drew me back in. I'm mostly a Sega dude. And they made the best F--Zero. That's hilarious. They schooled Nintendo, who hasn't made a F Zero since. They got dogged.
I wish I had got on with GC sooner. But it was onion rings when people wanted french fries.

Same boat man but we were playing the PS2. Glad we came around to the Game Cube. Great console. Just wish the games weren't so damn expensive right now. Cheers to the good ol' Game Cube!

In the UK I bought a gamecube for £60 from CEX, it was in good condition but when I started playing it, the screen was really white and difficult to see. I thought it was the TV but turned out that the lead I was using was a US lead. Had to buy a pal one and it worked just fine! Little tip for any buyers out there.
