I am the exact opposite. I was blissfully in love with my SEGA MegaDrive. One day my dad and I were walking through the mall in 1997 and he saw a PlayStation exhibition and the guy told him all about 3D graphics. My dad forced me to try out the display set they had and after 10 minutes he paid $250 USD on the spot to take the PS1 home with us (and in my country $250 American dollars is about $1000 bucks in our local currency). I couldn't believe it. I had to sit there and watch him unplug my SEGA and store it in the closet so the PS1 could take its place. I hated that thing. The graphics were so ugly and jagged and crooked and everything looked like dirt, and I couldn't figure out why I had to give up my lovely sharp clean colorful 2D side-scrollers which I hadn't even finished yet so we could have polygons that didn't even look finished. It took about 2 years before I finally accepted the past was gone and I was stuck with this thing. Thankfully there was Castlevania Symphony Of The Night and Crash Bandicoot which were tons of fun to help me adjust.

@@dhrgkbqxtjr2743 dope story, me too all those damm jagged graphics
      And its damn loading time.
It took at least 3 years for the thing to get into itself.
3d games in its first 2 years was full of experiments until they got 3d gaming fleshed out.
And then we saw simulation type gaming, better cameras and a little better graphics and less rice grain look, full fleshed content .

Regarding the PS One, the LCD screen was sold separately and as a combo pack. The ac car plug was sold separately too. My parents bought me the lcd combo and I remember we had to hunt down the car power supply in a bigger city. This thing was awesome for road trips, we went to florida once or twice a year, which was a 10+hour drive. At night, we would get so many looks going down the road because that screen lit our car up like a spaceship lol. It was one of my favorite gifts I ever got, I thought I was definitely living in the future playing Driver on the go.

@@benevans7564 yeah, from what I remember the PsOne released like right around the same time the PS2 was released, it was definitely cheaper than the original PlayStation. I feel like from what I remember, the lcd combo was pretty exspensive, like 249 or 300 if I remember correctly, with out the LCD it was wayyy cheaper.

I grew up with the PSone as my first console. We had Spyro 3, Gran Turismo, Disney's Dinosaur, Driver, Legend of the Dragoon, Star Wars Masters, Star Wars Demolition and others. That console broke a few years after getting a ps2. I luckily found a PlayStation at a thrift store a couple years ago. I bought it for the sole purpose of the music visualizer. I used to listen to CDs on it and bounce on my couch while drinking Kool-Aid. It was so nostalgic and I also was looking for an excuse to collect CDs. A couple years later I have hundreds of CDs and I love collecting them and listening to them on the PlayStation with that visualizer running. It's definitely one of my passions in life.

  • @BenSchmerler

The PSOne LCD screen is surprisingly good for the time. I wouldn't play anything with small text on it, but most games are very playable on it even today. I picked up a system with the LCD at a flea market a couple years ago for $20 with a stack of games...super lucky find. Then I completed another one with a screen with a broken hinge but the monitor works great. Regarding the price of games, the library is so extensive that there are many good games still very cheap even at full retail price, and many others that are easily justifiable for the price of a brand new game, like Super Puzzle Fighter 2 or Rayman or the numerous fighting and racing games on the system.

I personally have nostalgia for the PS1 because it was the first main console I owned. Great video. I always wanted the PS ONE with the LCD screen when I was a kid but my single mom could never afford it. I finally recently got one with the carrying bag and I couldn’t be happier. I believe the LCD was sold separately and in a combo with the console. I know the boxes combos sell for a pretty penny. 3rd party companies also sold portable batteries for the combo but they’re incredibly hard to find and definitely don’t still hold a charge. Thanks for the hilarious quality content. You guys always cheer me up after a long day.

Just to clarify a little further about the PSone, it was released in the summer of 2000 (a few months before the PS2's release) and the LCD screen was released about a year and a half later in early 2002. The screen was sold both separately and as a combo pack (for those who did not already have a PSone) for a couple of years in the states. By then however, the PS2's increase in popularity & success, its price reduction, and the release of the PS2 slim contributed to its demise here in the states and probably elsewhere too.
Also, I still have my old Playstation my dad bought back around October or November of 1998 and the very first game we bought from Walmart was the original Gran Turismo. The reason why I wanted the Playstation was because my sister and I were at a friends house and some of the other kids and I were playing Gran Turismo and I thought it was the best thing ever in my 8 year old mind so I asked my parents if we could get a Playstation as well and about a few weeks later, we bought one and it's been in the family since 🙂

I love ps1 and hope someday you guys get further into it. The library for ps1 is so vast and amazing its definitely worth investing time into. I was in high school when i first got a ps1 and have good memories of the console and i also love the jewel cases. When they are in good shape they are shinny and nice but we all have our own preferences. I enjoy the channel and like the tshirts you guys wear i have the nirvana tshirt in black and yellow and find myself looking for some of the shirts you wear on the show. I remember it well back in the day. My brother and I wanted to get the next gen system. We still had our NES and Sega Genesis systems.
We went to Toys R Us and looked at our choices. At the time it was a choice between Sony PlayStation or Sega Saturn. We kept going back and forth to check the games. Just tiny posters that showed the front artwork and on the back tells what the game was about.
After a long while, we chose The Sony PlayStation and we made the best choice! Lots of great games.
I'm not a basketball fan but I had a blast playing NBA Shootout 98. So fun. Then we had to buy several memory cards. Ah the memories. Later I bought us a second PlayStation so we could both play Doom at the same time with that link cable. I still have my PlayStation, in prime condition, just as the day I bought it and I played the hell out of that system.

I purchased a Ps classic last year when they were dirt cheap as you mentioned and it's so cool going back to the old games again. It's not something I play all the time but it's still fun to play every now and again. Do you have a favourite wrestling game on the PS1?

I live outside the US so my local currency is 4 times weaker than the US Dollar. One day my dad was taking me shopping and there was an exhibition display at the mall where they were promoting the PS1. My dad dragged me there to check it out (I was tired and wanted to go home) and the salesman told him this was the next gen gaming console that uses 3D polygons and has more realism and violent games with blood spewing out. He told my dad it was gaming for adults, and my dad gave him 1000 bucks on the spot to take the PS1 home. That's $250 USD, but still. Spending 1000 at once in the 1990s was no joke. Now when I emulate the PS1 for free on my low spec laptop, I think about how much he spent for something that would be so easy to pirate a few years later and shake my head.

The reason that I have to own this console in my collection even though I also have a PS2 that can play all of the PS1 games is the PS1 startup screen sound. Playing a PS1 game without hearing that nostalgic startup screen sound before the game loads just doesn't feel right. It is the greatest startup of any console ever.

  • @cd5sircoupe

Parasite Eve, Metal Gear Solid, & Symphony of the Night are goat games. PS1 was my jam back in the day, have a pretty beefy collection but there's a lot of holes in what I've got. Prices are insane for a lot of stuff right now, and good finds aren't turning up like they used to on the second hand market for any of the consoles pre gen6, then there's also the new breed of hunters... ugh.
I've got a few people in my general area that scoop everything and resell the stuff online for 3x+ price. My old man used to get most of my second hand collection until the market took off. He was actually telling me about this smarmy guy the other day that is like 1 step ahead of him every weekend and he buys all the games at the fleamarkets and tag sales. Turns out based on his description, my brother knows that this guy's a local nuisance & scalper that pissed off the majority of the local fb retro game group. Sounds like a total shitbag.
But that gripe-ing aside, check out some gameplay of Vagrant Story if you like Parasite Eve and dungeon crawlers with a Squaresoft touch.

The PlayStation is amongst my favorite consoles. #1 no doubt for me has to be Symphony of the Night. It's cool to see that you're Parasite Eve fans. I've beaten the main story, but I still need to finish the epilogue, which is a grind to say the least. I bought Parasite Eve II years ago and have yet to play it. I'm a huge fan of Alundra. What are your takes on that game?
For RPGs other than Final Fantasy VII, I love Suikoden, Wild Arms, Lunar Silver Star and Eternal Blue, Final Fantasy Tactics, and Vandal Hearts.
For shooters, I have the R-Types and The Raiden Project compilations, which make nice additions for shooter fans. I used to have Raystorm and Thunderforce V, but those are very expensive to re-acquire.
For insanely expensive PS1 games, I recently sold a copy of Klonoa for $435 and I paid just $30 for it. I have been taking advantage of this, using the funds to buy more Neo Geo MVS and AES games.

You guys make good points. Other then Crash, Spyro and the Tekken games. Maybe the Twisted Metals. I couldn’t see a reason to go back. There’s so many ways to play the software. If you’re 30 like me this is one of the first systems you had and legitimately remember along with 64. At the time. PlayStation was definitely edgier, more people had it then 64 and I felt like games looked better then on 64. Now 20-23 years later it definitely seems people look at 64 more fondly. Funny how that changes. But yeah this gen is rough. 8 bit and 16 bit era has charm and always will. But the 32-64 bit era was experimental and not looked back on fondly. 6th gen and above really showed the potential of 3D and every other gen has added on.

There are a lot of dimes in terms of games for the system in a variety of genres represented just like the PS2, but y’all are right you can play them on a number of different platforms and nostalgia has spiked the prices intensely. JRPGs are nuts in price and I feel as long as a game is unique in gameplay, not relying on 3D as much, and doesn’t have plans for remaster, it’ll keep going up in price. A.k.a symphony (metroidvania), klonoa (platformer), vandal hearts (Strat), parasite eve(action), no one can stop Mr. Domino (quirky puzzle), Suikoden II(JRPG) and Einhander (Shooter) to name a few

I always had Nintendo and bought a Playstation and then PS2 for my brother for his birthdays to try to get him to leave my consoles alone. The only reason I have one nowadays is so I can run some Area 51 with my brother and dad since we used to burn tons of quarters playing the arcade version. In my legacy console collection the Playstation dukes it out with the genesis and Dreamcast for smallest library.

Totally understand that! The arcade experience is amazing but mighty price overtime! Nice to have your games on home consoles! Cheers!
