I remember walking into a game store in late 1999. I glanced at the TV and saw a football game being played. I remember thinking, "oh I wonder who is playing?" Then I focused my eyes and realized it wasn't a real game - it was a video game on the Dreamcast. That was probably the biggest next-gen leap I had seen up to that point. I remember standing there in shock just staring at it. The future had arrived right before my eyes.

    • @GamingOffTheGrid

It was an insane leap. I had a similar experience but with NBA 2k. My mind was blown. I literally though we had peaked. How could it get better than that lol. It was a really fun time to be a gamer for sure. Hell, I'm pretty sure we are close to the same age, we grew up during an awesome time in general. Cheers to that!

@@GamingOffTheGrid i was personally born in 93 but didnt get a Dreamcast until later on after it had already been discontinued. My family didnt have a lot of money to put towards video games as a kid so i didnt even manage to get my first n64 until about year 2000 when they had really come down in price. I eventually found a Dreamcast at gamestop one day used for 20 bucks around 2005ish (cant exactly remember but it was right before most of the gamestops first stopped selling a lot of the older systems like the Sega Genesis in the mid 2000s). I had sold it a couple years later because i needed the money (probably for something stupid) and honestly regret it nowadays. It was basically in mint condition and the color hadnt even yellowed.

I still have my Dreamcast that I originally purchased back in Jan 2001. My main reason for loving this system is of course the arcade ports. Crazy Taxi, Gauntlet Legends, Marvel vs. Capcom 1 & 2, Street Fighter III, and more. This and the Saturn (Japan) were pure gold when it came to arcade games.

The Dreamcast! Out of all the launch systems I participated in, the Dreamcast holds the most nostalgia for me. I was in the 6th grade and traded in my PS1 for this awesome machine. The sounds, the graphics, the Games. From Sonic, Sega Bass Fishing 2 to Crazy Taxi and Zombie Revenge, House of the Dead and Blue Stinger. The Resident Evil series, Dino Hunter. So many good games, but the "focus" to Xbox, Ps2 and the Cube came quick the following year and again I made a trade. I quickly bought another a few years later though when I worked at Eb Games!

    "...It's thinking."
I love the Dreamcast. I knew one guy who had one (one of those guys who had everything). I was P.C. Master Race at the time but seeing it made want one. I got one final like 4-5 Years ago and it blew me away. I understand what happened to Sega and how they just ran out of money but how this thing failed is beyond me. It has one of the strongest gaming libraries for any system. I've yet to play a bad game on it.
I'm right there with you on wanting the black sports one. Also, sadly, have to agree with your overall assessment. I got like a dozen or so games for it but what some of them are worth now like one game is equal to what I paid for all of them. It's a little funny looking back. I think I paid $25 for Skies of Arcadia and thought I overpaid for it. Ended up being worth it, because the game is amazing, but if only my past self knew what I know now. But man, I'm looking at my collection right now with stuff like Crazy Taxi, Power Stone, Record of Lodos War and Berserk among others and want to hook my Dreamcast up right now (my Sega CD is currently hooked up).

Thanks for the vid! I did some weird shit with my collections. I bought my Dreamcast with like 10-15 games off a guy I knew in 2003-2004 and it had most of the classics. Marvel vs Capcom 2, sonic adventure 1&2, power stone 1&2, and so on. When I had my first son I hadn't played video games in a few years and I sold off everything....except the Dreamcast itself oddly lol. Then I found out years later I still had the case for Marvel Vs Capcom 2 but no game 🤦‍♂️(and a few others). So I really appreciate the ability to burn these backups. Recently I even bought a Dreamcast game lot off someone and it had booklets and inserts for dino crisis and blue stinger weirdly? So I burned those as well 🤣. There are scenarios I don't feel like I need the original games. And those are it. I have since amassed most of the collection I once had.

I just bought a Dreamcast complete in box off a colleague of mine with 2 controllers, one VMU and a box of around 20 games (not sure what games yet but he’ll be giving me them when he gets to the box as he’s cleaning out his storage unit). All of that for..... drum roll please..... 20 fucking dollars!!!!!! I was stoked and he wouldn’t take more even though I told him it was worth more. Although the library is small there truly are enough good games to warrant a purchase in 2021. Plus there are many third party developers ( Josh Prod) that have come out with several good games in the last few years for the Dreamcast. Dreamcast still rocks.

That HD version is missing that awesome intro and Mission Battle though so the DC is still the definitive version of the game. I have never actually seen a DC game in recent times. I didn't want to be an only burner but that's how it turned out. The upside of every game being obscure or whatever is sort of like blind rentals back in the day. I had never heard of EGG, nor Armada, or Sword of the Berserk or Silver. But I like them all. So there is an joy of discovery there. Baseline a DC in a non collective sense will run you about a $100. That's not bad. Plus it's Sega history. And I love Sega.

I'm glad I got into DC very early. Got my first one maybe a year or so after they stopped selling, as a refurb. Think I have about 10 or so by now, including two of the black Sports models. I'm pretty well stocked on games/peripherals from over the years.
Coincidentally, my original's GD rom died the other week when I booted it to test out my HDMI converter. I went through like almost all of my other consoles testing compatibility with the same results, 75% of the games worked with the cable. Finally got to my second Sports edition and it played everything, aside from Air Force Delta (a non-VGA game) and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (one that claims it's VGA). I have 2 different brands of HDMI converters and they both work the same with these games, even the non-VGA ones, but there's a small amount of games that will never work. Unfortunately for me, JJBA is the one game I really wanted to play and it'll never work. Well, at least I got MVC2 going.
Also have a boat load of controllers, VMUs, the keyboard (used to be really into PSO when it was current, then even more so with the GC version), a few light guns... unfortunately no BBA as of yet. Dreamcast prices for everything have tripled or more in the last few years, it's honestly insane. Games I'd find for like 10-20 bucks years ago are 150 plus now, consoles went from 25 to 100. It's hard enough to find them in the wild, but even at a store all I ever find are the sports titles for the past few years. Ugh. Did come up on 4 games in a random car at the junkyard a few weeks ago, including Virtua Tennis. Easy 120 bucks for everything if I choose to sell. Got them for free from the clerk.
I'm gonna take that original console of mine with the burnt out gd-rom and mod the crap out of it. Already have the gdemu mod, planning on getting a new power supply/fan, smoked case, maybe looking at a bluetooth controller setup. It's gonna be awhile before I get into anything other than the gdemu since I already have that. I figure I might as well make one of them nasty right? I already have one that's just defective/broken parts that I swapped together from 4 consoles total to make the other 3 functional. Luckily it worked out that each one had different failed components.

    • @cd5sircoupe
      @cd5sircoupe 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Since GotG liked this today, yes in fact I did turn my original DC into a crazy modded machine over the winter. Gdemu+shroud, noctua fan, Dream mod's bluetooth PSU & modded controller & backlit VMU all matching the Retro Is Cool case in smoke grey, plus it was a 128gb Sandisk Ultra Extreme something SD card I believe, super fast read/write. And I guess the rechargeable battery mod on the controller port. And an ethernet adapter with a smoker household shell that I put into the new case. Unfortunately the repro cases only accommodate the standard 56k phone line jack so I had to bore out the new case to fit the larger ethernet jack.
Basically the only thing that hasn't been modified at this point is the Naomi motherboard.
Have you guys seen the price of even the clone Gdemu chips lately? Jeez... they ain't $35 anymore.

I loved the Dreamcast when it was released and while everybody was ignoring it and jumping on the PS2 hype train, I would argue that the Dreamcast was the better console. I would say that the PS2 did eventually surpass it, but that took a few years and if the Dreamcast had not had an early death, I feel it may have ended up being my favorite 6th gen console as Sega was at the top of their game that gen and would go on to make more 6th gen favorites for other consoles.
But the problem with the Dreamcast now and the reason that I no longer have it in my collection is the same reason that I no longer own a Wii U even though I thought that console was also underrated during its time, and that is because most of the best Dreamcast games have either been ported to other consoles or had superior sequels on other consoles just like how most of the best Wii U games were ported to the Switch.

Metropolis street racer was the very first racing game in the project Gotham series, but I did not like any of the project Gotham games as much as I’d like to Metropolis street racer!!
I honestly couldn’t believe that y’all didn’t mention this amazing game?!
But in all truth it was a very rare racing game that not many people knew about

A bought a lot from OfferUp which included a top loader/games and a Sega Dreamcast with the box but no games about a year ago. Still haven't made the plunged to buy any games for it. The games are expensive and I'm not sure I'm up for the challenge or income to start a new collection. 🤔

It's a tough market for sure. It's rare to find them in the wild at a good price for sure. There are other options but if you like playing original hardware like us it's a tough console to get into. Thanks a ton for watching. Cheers!

18:49 You guys do know that those Jewel cases open up and you can take all the paper and everything out of the plastic and put it all in a different Jewel case right?
20:59 Yes it is. The Wii was repackaged GameCube hardware.

The Dreamcast was so great. The console was good enough to save Sega from going under on it's own merits, but unfortunately it was already too late for Sega by the time Dreamcast came out. Sega's repeated hardware failures after the Genesis released cost it too much money, and lost it too many customers who understandably lost their trust in Sega. The Dreamcast would wind up being an incredible swan song for Sega in the hardware space through no fault of it's own.

yeah sega was definitely on there last legs with the dreamcast. it was a great system and a great swan song for sega

The market is so different compared to 12 years ago. I got my Dreamcast for 50$ back in 2009.
Nowadays the pricing on the console is ridiculous, the last game i bought Metropolis Street Racer i had to wait to find a copy for under 20$ because its getting stupid expensive.
Anyone looking for one if you don't care about collecting, just put a GDEMU in it. The games are just getting stupid expensive nowadays.

It has changed drastically for sure. I don't know if you seen in the video but one of our Dreamcasts we got for 24.99 used. That's nuts lol. We are looking at a GDemu as it's super easy to install. We just need to find someone who can format an SD card w/ the games that we can buy off of them because finding time to figure that out is tough. We barely have time to keep up with our vids :). Cheers!

I never knew the Dreamcast even existed until this last year. seems like an awesome console though!

It's a sweet console for sure. Wish it would have had a longer life cycle. A lot of SEGA games that ended up on the XBOX would have been DC games. It just fizzled out too fast. Thanks for watching. Cheers!

@retro game fan Never seen one in my region, I guess it just failed too badly at the time that no one care to distribute it here. So yeah that’s how people heard about it pretty late.

Still have my launch dreamcast hooked up and it still runs fine. Its still my favourite system. Marvel vs capcom 2 and Street fighter alpha 3 eat so many hours into gaming nights here. So many awesome arcade games. Did you guys ever play WWF Royal rumble? Its a bit simplistic, but amazing fun in 4 player. It is getting expensive to collect for, but thankfully this is one that I kept hold of when I collected for it during its run!

Oh yes, we have Royal Rumble. Not a lot of depth to the game but it is a damn good time for sure. Cheers!

The microphone which I think is the only compatible with the weird game with Leonard Nimoy narrating it. You had the GameCube port of Skies of Arcadia in one of your game flipping videos that was the dollar game at Goodwill I believe. Rival Schools is a great Dreamcast fighting series. And Dreamcast is still getting new games to this day because I've seen MetalJesusRocks recent pickup video

Hurts to just watch you guys blow past all the top tier fighting games that makes the Dreamcast so much more desirable to collect for. Really missing some heavy hitters.

Man, I used to have that black Sega Sports model, but I unfortunately traded it back in the day. However, I found 4 stock white DC’s at Goodwill a few years ago for $10 each!
