My brother and I had a SNES growing up and our friend down the street had a Genesis. None of us chose one over the other, we just liked the fact that we could play both. The older I get (35 now) the more I love collecting stuff for Genesis and also Sega in general. CHEERS FELLAS 🍻

Thats a good way to look at it! We argued with each other but we knew we liked going to each others houses to play the others console and games! great times! Cheers!

Same, my cousin who lived next door had the SNES and we had the Genesis - great games for all! We'd never take the system to each other's house, just decide which one we wanted to play and post up

I had borrowed a genesis from a friend in 92 and he had my nes. He moved and I had to give it back. 93 I bought a model 2 with my own money. Got sonic 2 with sonic 1 mail away, street fighter 2, 6 button controller and wwf royal rumble. Then Xmas my co worker game me joe Montana 93 because he got a extra one for Xmas.
Still love my genesis. Play it regularly.

Scott was the only genesis kid in his neighborhood among a sea of SNES kids. It was the same with us too. My brother had a genesis and I think when I was a bit older my mom got me a SNES. Definitely have a lot of love for Streets of Rage, played some Sonic for sure. It was the same for both of us, no one I knew had a master system. Sega Genesis is absolutely alive and well in 2023.

I always grew up with nintendo. I didn't play a genesis until I started collecting again, which I believe was 2007. The very first game I remember playing on the genesis was aladdin. Very fun and challenging game at times, but I still to this day prefer the super nintendo. Great video as always and see you soon at MGC!

❤ I grew up during the Nintendo/Sega console wars and was a staunch Nintendo kid. But I have to admit having feelings of envy while playing the Genesis for the first time at a friend’s house in 1989. The release of the SNES definitely helped me outwardly cope with how good the Genesis was, but I secretly wished I owned one. I finally picked up my own (model 2) a few years ago at a thrift store, and since then I’ve curated a nice little collection of arcade action awesomeness.

X-Men, X-Men 2 Clone Wars, Batman Returns, Batman Animated Series, Jurassic Park, Alien 3, Maximum Carnage, Rocket Knight, Taz Mania, Punisher (Dang Marvel killed it in the 16bit era), Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter 2 Hyper Fighting, TMNT Hyperstone Heist, Wolverine Adamanteum Rage, Comix Zone, Eccho the Dolphin (still never beat it), The Flintstones, Gargoyles, Donald Duck Quackshot, Robocop vs Terminator, Thunder Force, Tiny Toons, The Incredible Hulk, god I could go on all day. I go back and forth on Snes vs Genesis so much. Honestly probably tied.
Also if you want to save money and are just looking to play. On Amazon I got a Sega Genesis Cart that has 200 games on it for $35 and it has most if not all the games I mentioned above on it. Collecting is always more fun and satisfying but times be tight.
Just got towards the end of the video and noticed they mentioned the carts I'm talking about.

My favorite thing about the Genesis is probably the fact that CIB games are typically more affordable since people didn’t throw the boxes away as much. Also the six button controller was pretty dope.

Just putting this here for anyone perusing the comments who might not know:
Loose Genesis cartridges can store great in things designed for cassette tape collections... slide-out drawers, wooden racks that can be wall-mounted... pretty much your pick. Check size first, but there's some easy storage with retro vibes. ✌️
If you're into beat'em-ups, don't miss Growl and Mystical Fighter.

I just recently got the Tower of Power. Sega CD Sega Genesis and 32 x all model 1 and the Genesis and 32 X have S-Video mod and the Genesis is overclocked. And it came with an everdrive X5. So damn cool!!! I like collecting for the Genesis now more than I collect for the SNES because it's easier to find Genesis games in the box with the manual for a lot cheaper than trying to find an SNES game in the box with the manual because Sega was smart and used plastic clamshell cases instead of cardboard. Great video as always!

So....we went from NES, to the Sega Genesis (model 2), then to the old school Playstation. I never experienced the SNES until my early to mid 30's. My wife actually bought me my first SNES for my birthday this year. As far as Sega, I never experienced the model 1. I never knew anyone that had one & still don't to this day. I'd have to say, because of that, the model 2 is where it's at. PERSONALLY I think it looks better but to each their own. I'll never forget the day my dad bought ours at Target. As far as games....it's TOUGH to choose my top 5 but I'd have to say Mortal Kombat 2, Robocop vs The Terminator, Aladdin, The Lion King, & Vectorman. You guys ROCK! Keep on being AWESOME!! 🤘🤘

Genesis was the first console I purchased with my own money & I still have it CIB. I had the Super Nintendo back then too and both consoles received play time pretty much equally. Experiencing the progression of Genesis game releases in the 90’s was incredible and Genesis still receives continued support with new game releases to this day. I have a model 2 with triple bypass looks & sounds incredible on LCD & especially on CRT via component cables

Punisher music in the background and that Wily Wars looks sexy on your shelf. Lol. As a kid/teen I had the Nes, Snes and Genesis. In my younger days I mostly stick to the Nintendo stuff, but as an adult I find I'm more drawn to the Genesis stuff. Weird how that works huh? Don't get me wrong I love both. I only knew one person who had a Master System back in the day. This dude Shawn. Never really knew anyone who played that though. Everyone had the Nes. Great vid as always. Cheers fellas!

The release date of Genesis 2 is a bit hazy. I’m almost positive it came out before 1994, I had the model 2 and I sure as hell did not get it as late as Christmas 94. I got it Christmas of 93 and it was bundled with Sonic 2. A google search does come up with a 94 release so I can understand how you got that info, but alas it’s wrong lol. Good video love watching you guys.

The 6 button controller may have came with later releases of the model 2 Genesis but I bought a model 2 Genesis for myself for my birthday in 1994 and it came with a 3 button controller. I had to buy a 6 button controller separately later on that year when Mortal Kombat 2 came out. I'm in my mid-40s now so I grew up with an Atari, had an NES at 10 years old so I was a teen during the console wars. The Sega Genesis was marketed for my age group and I bought into it hook line and sinker. I kept mine and even got a 32X for it until 1997 when I moved on to the original Playstation.

I had binged your "buying guide" series over the last few days and given all the Mega Drive games in the background I was surprised you hadn't done one for this console, and here it is!
Born in 1990 and growing up in the UK, we were firmly a Mega Drive house. I didn't know a single person with a Super Nintendo. Entirely different market. Since moving to the States in 2008 it's been weird seeing this polar opposite in 'culture' where Nintendo were the dominant platform back in the day.
I have a Model 1 in near mint condition and a bunch of games, but these days I rock an Analogue Mega SG with a Mega SD flash cart with full Sega CD support. It's the end game for Mega Drive gaming!
    Anyway, comfy video as usual!

Having an older brother, I had the Mega drive in the UK but also had access to my brother's SNES and Amiga. There was a lot of Amiga ports (both had the same Motorola 68000 chip so I think they were easy to convert) Like Lotus Turbo Challenge, RoboCod, Speedball 2 and Lemmings which are easier to to get hold of than the Amiga hardware and discs. If you are looking to get the actual hardware, you want to try and get your hands on the Model 1 Genesis that has the "High Definition Graphics" on it. That version has by far the best audio output, which you can still do stereo through the headphone port, and it's also compatible with the most add-ons like the Power Base Converter, which is a bit pricey, yes, but it's wayyy cheaper than getting an actual Master System.

I was a Sega household as a kid, still have all my original Genesis stuff and then some over the years. Like, a lot over the years. Probably have a dozen model 2s now, a complete model 3, and two model 1s. One of my model 1s is in brand new condition, doesn't even look like it's ever been powered on or had a cart inserted. The other was a really rough late revision right before the switch to model 2, generally considered the worst of the 1s.
I decided to preorder the first aftermarket shell on the market last year and I can't complain. It's a transparent smoke grey and comes with different panels so it'll fit all the model 1 revisions with their different port configs on the back, and it has different graphics for the top so you can make it look like a US, Pal, or JP version. 1986 and 1994! Damn I feel old (Nov of 1979) the first time I experienced Super Mario Bros was in the arcades. Back in the day the Genesis was the enemy since I grew up during the Console Wars and my allegiance was for Nintendo😆 The Genesis is a tremendous console worth investing in. Fun fact: the model 3 can play Japanese games. Some Japanese games play on the other two models but you’ll need a Game Genie.

I was one of those kids who convinced their parent to get them both 16-bit machines (later in their cycles for cheaper of course). I started out with NES, but Game Brick and Genesis 2 (which awkshually released in '93) really got me into gaming. Nowadays, the JP Mega Drive 1 is my favorite of the variants. By the way, the Genesis 3 is a great little console. It can be modded to to restore stereo and it can be forced to run CD and 32X games through some shenanigans.

@@GamingOffTheGrid I'd definitely say the 90s were a true golden age of games. Still have my Super Nintendo games and console from that time (has a lot less bromine in the plastic so it never even yellowed). Unfortunately killed my childhood Genesis 2; still have the games and use my modded Japanese Mega Drive.
Cool thing about the Genesis 3 is it doesn't have physical lockout, so it just needs a region mod to run newer software-locked games. The RGB output is also really nice.

My brother had the NES which he rarely let me play. I would sit and cheerlead while he played Zelda, Mario, Goonies... as for genesis, i loved the look of model 1. didnt like how model 2 looked and i liked my model 1 sega cd. but i was all in for games like herzog zwei, revenge of shinobi, ghostbusters, biohazard battle, pit fighter, shadow dancer, starflight, batman, streets of rage and more. i also got Crack Down in the mail today, too. i love my sega genesis mini 1 and 2, especially 2 with the final fight CD game on it, i play it on Mania difficulty, love it. im a slight bit more snes fan, but, i'll always love genesis, it had games the snes just didnt have. i have original consoles, but, i play all my carts now on the Retron5 and have wireless pads, such as 8bitdo's SNES pad and Retrobit's "Big 6" pad thats an original genesis pad but with 6 buttons. its awesome.

I got nes first but when my brother brought home a Sega Genesis with ghouls n ghost i was instantly amazed by it. I actually snuck into his room through the window to play it. I still have the first genesis i ever owned and a handful of games and still play it often. Nothing beats the original console but it is nice to have all the games through emulation too. Some of those cheapy consoles from china are down to under $40 and have full libraries of all the retro games. I also bought a multi cartridge with 210 games on it for my genisis and it's great. I was 14 when the original Genesis launched and I picked it up on launch day at Kay-Bee. Much of the reason I did was because I knew Sega and the quality of the hardware and games from the Sega Master System which I had for years before. I eventually got a Sega CD (model 1) and a 32X. It wasn't until the early 2000's that I was able to obtain and try a Genesis 2, Sega CD model 2 and a Genesis 3.
The Genesis 3 is actually an excellent console. It has probably the best composite out of any Genesis model. It has an excellent video decoder. The drawbacks are mono audio (even if you connect a Genesis 2 stereo cable), no Sega CD support, no SMS support (unless you hack it back in) and no 32X support...and it won't work with Virtua Racing. BUT, if all you need is a tiny reliable Genesis with crisp visuals it is great....and easy to pack along on trips. It is compatible with every cartridge as far as I am aware except that crappy Virtua Racing cart.

Even now there are new games developed for these old systems even to this day. Paprium, Demons of Asteborg, Tanglewood, Tanzer to name a few. And YES, CRT all the way!! Although, I was a huge Nintendo fan myself and picked up an NES in 1991 when I got my Genesis (bought simultaneously) and then a SNES a while later. I eventually got a SEGA CD, too.

@@GamingOffTheGrid Thanks, my struggle to get the console was something to behold for me back then, as I had to save money or have some miracle stuff to happen (the later was the reason as one youtuber did a challenge type giveaway for a model 2 console with a Mega Man game marathon in December 2012 and got the jackpot there), as for the 32X... once my current situation gets better I may hunt for it, same for the Sega CD... unless I upgrade my Mega Everdrive X7 to the PRO or it's equivalent rival, also... it's pretty convenient that (aside of the model 3) the Genesis is backwards compatible with the Master System, having 2 retro consoles at the price of 1, something that was rare to find back in those days.

the model 3 does have a list of things that it can’t do and games it won’t play. Most notably the Genesis 3 is missing any port to hook it up to a Sega CD, so that’s out. The Genesis 3 also, from what I understand, has a stripped down and rearranged motherboard, although I’m told they used the same chips, making it incompatible with the 32x add-on and even Virtua Racing. I have read, however, there may be a quite substantial mod to make the Genesis 3 compatible with the 32x and Virtua Racing, but still not the Sega CD.

Agree about the CRT! I grew up diehard Sega. 1st had the Master System, then got the Genesis, so forth, and so on, with every Sega System, but the Genesis is probably my favorite Sega system. I ended up finding a 20in Sony Wega Trinitron at a thrift store for $15!! I was so stoked! It even had the remote. The people at the thrift store did not understand my hype! Lol

I had one when I was younger. Loved the Strike series, Mortal Kombat, Robocop Vs Terminator, Streets of Rage, PGA Golf. I do find though recently it's just too easy to emulate, so use a megadrive mini. The sort of games I play I don't really notice the latency

I was a nintendo kid, but I had a genesis and other consoles, even the Sega master system, (dope name by the way) I never let a good game/consoles pass me. Nintendo is definitely my favorite but I wasn't like most folks that lie to themselves that the console they own is the best and they don't need anything else, depriving them of good games. The genesis was more than definitely a worthy challenge to the snes and that's coming from a Nintendo fan. The genesis was a great, legendary and phenomenal console and will always remain in my heart. Nintenso for life though lol.
Lastly I do agree, the first model genesis is the best and the 2nd gen model a close 2nd. The genesis also had better cases than the cardboard snes boxes. The Genesis is Sega doing a console right. I wish they were still making consoles

    • @GamingOffTheGrid
      @GamingOffTheGrid  ปีที่แล้ว +2

Yes the sega was a very worthy challanger! We feel like they did different things well so if you play them both you get the best of both worlds! Yeah sega needs to get back into the console scene! 🍻

Yes, get a Genesis! Yes, Genesis is badass!
But here's the truth... I was 18 in 1989 with my first full-time job and cash to blow. I had the NES already from '87 and loved it. So here comes the TG-16 and Genesis within weeks of each other so I buy them both. I can not remember which one I got first ¯\_(ツ)_/¯... but SEGA Genesis has never managed to be #1 in my heart. I fell in love with the TG-16 instead. Make no mistake, I really do have a love for the Genesis, but I was sooooo disappointed with the SEGA CD. Then, as the SNES came out, that became #1 to me.
Though, as time has gone on my love for SEGA has only grown with having owned a Master System, Game Gear, Genesis, and Dreamcast. Yes, SEGA systems have always been in second place for me, yet I cannot imagine a world without SEGA because they elevated every system they competed with. Overall, SEGA more than held their ground against every system they went head-to-head with. The final word is, get any physical SEGA system you still can these days (including the minis)!

      @GamingOffTheGrid  ปีที่แล้ว +1

A hidden gem I recommend is Landstalker. Its an action adventure game thats is from an isometric view point. It can be a bit tough but the music, witty writing and intricate design of the world and puzzles definitely make it worthwhile. Just recently picked it up and its still affordable loose if anyone is interested in owning it. I wouldn't say its my favorite genesis game but i still absolutely love it. Probably top 10

Team Genesis since 12 years in the summer of ‘89 which I bought with my own money from mowing lawns. Brother had a SNES and friend had TG-16 so had a lot of exposure. This is honestly in no particular order other than #1 and honorable mention.
