Today I'll show you what I consider to be the easiest way to install your manual cam chain tensioner. It's also a good time to inspect your air filter and clean in gunk in the airbox. I also display my 3D printed triple tree plug. If you want one for your f4i, just message me!
What a difference ten years obviously makes! I have a 1991 F2, and although I realize that the F4i will probably leave my carb-powered model in the dust, the CCT replacement/adjustment procedure is NOWHERE NEAR this involved! I have a Haynes manual (with pictures--yay!!) and it's basically just removing the right-side lower fairing panel, and you're right there. Good advice, though, on securing the tank with bungee cords--will definitely remember that tip as I dive into this repair.
Sweet man! I have no experience with street bikes that have carbs, only dirt bikes. I'm glad that people are keeping them going though. Someday, when everything is electric, that will be a special little piece of history.
Ppl acting like this is hard to do lol. The fuel rail is literally 3 8 mil bolts like he said. And it frees up alot of space. It will make life easier. Get some quick disconnect fuel fittings and u can take the whole tank of easier but even without its not bad.
This is probably the hardest way I’ve ever seen somebody change this. You could literally just barely lift the tank and use a couple extensions from the rear swing arm. Easy 10 to 15 minutes
Cool, you do it your way man.
“No fairing removal”
- proceeds to dismantle half bike
But I saved the hassle of removing fairings. Many other videos show how to do it by removing the fairings. I also think it's a good idea to take the bike apart to that level to clean and inspect parts. It's a 46k mile bike with questionable history so I figured it was worth a look. To each his own. Stay upright and on 2 wheels my friend.
Lol... still, no fairing removal in the title... the first thing you do is remove a fairing.
my question is...... when replacing with aftermarket, how does a person know how much to adjust the new tensioner? I honestly don"t want to do this twice .
Great video. Once it's installed and injectors and air box put back together, is there any reason why I couldn't start the bike up with the tank still held up by bungee cords? That way the tensioner could still be reached (barely) to adjust. Thank you
That's a great question! I don't see why not but I would suggest tensioning it on the loose side, putting tank down but no screws or anything, start the bike, Rev to rpms sound was audible at before, listen for improvement, pull the tank back up and try to tighten 1/8 turns. It is difficult to get wrenches in there to adjust once it's all back together. You can also use a bunch of ratchet extensions and unbolt the coolant reservoir to get at it from the rear. This would be good to hold the "bolt" in place while you use a wrench on the lock nut.
@@Moturd thanks so much for the reply. Much appreciated 🙏
Curious to know how you personally adjusted the cct once installed. Id prefer not to put fuel rail on and off just to restart bike (with air filter off), and have seen some people talking about how tight it should feel before moving locknut into place. Thoughts?
Yeah this is a great question. I had it too right at first and the bike wouldn't stay running. I backed it off and it's run fine since. It's kind of a Goldilocks adjustment which will be different for every bike depending on how work the chain is etc.
Is it possible without the fuel rail being taken off and how much should I tighten the manual cct bolt down just enough for it not to raffle and maybe a little more or no
Hmm. You may be get your hand in there with just the airbox off but my hand wouldn't fit without the fuel rail off
So u had to tak the bike apart again and losen it ?
Yeah. First try was too tight. Live and learn!
Yo I’d be interested in getting one of those plugs for the triple, I do have a 954 front end so idk if it’s the same size or not though
Hey there! My apologies, I do not check this as often as I should. I don't know if the 954 is the same size. Do you have some calipers you could measure with? If so, I'll make you one for just the cost of shipping!
Pretty sure it’s 1/2 inch/13mm
Way easier to remove the fairings.
Why on earth did Honda decide to makes this so fiddly...?!
Well to be fair. They recommend the auto cam chain tensioner. Which does work but doesn't last a long time. I agree they didn't knock it out of the park with this particular part but the rest of the bike makes up for it in my opinion. Once I set the CCT, I've never messed with it again.
