2012 Yamaha WR450F Street Legal Conversion - Is it the ultimate dual sport under $5,000?? - Tusk Kit
*For entertainment purposes. Don't do what I do.*
I finally finished the street legal conversion on my 2012 Yamaha WR450F. I used the Tusk kit from Rocky Mountain MX/ATV. I think it's a great kit but there are some intricacies to getting it just right. I wouldn't bother with the mirrors that come with it unless you don't care about seeing behind you. I wanted better ones for the street and I like be bale to see newer riders I'm teaching behind me on the trail without having to turn my whole body. I did this conversion in Nevada and it's a fairly simple process. Make sure to get a "street" insurance policy as the off road policy is different than on road. I needed 2 mirrors (some states only require one) and I needed another brake light switch as the Tusk kit only comes with one for the rear brake. They are the same part, but you need one for the front.
I personally think this is the best setup you can get for under $5000. Not to toot my own horn but it looks like it came street legal from the factory.
Don't forget a key kit from Sicass Racing!

    Thank you so much for this video. It helped me so much, because i have same model 1979. I bought this with only 5k miles and it was equipped with a no name brand carburetor. That one works frome driving perspective very well but obivously too rich since s spark plug is always sooty. I also have the original MIKUNI VM 28 SS which looks realy good. Main Yet 130 I carefully cleaned it up an gave it a try. It works but last Quartier of gas there is no performance above ca. 40 miles/h. then stop. With no brand i could go up to ca. 60. So was it sucessful when you changed your Main Yet? Maybe that could be solution for my old Mikuni to step Main yet up. I'am wondering since my Mikuni is still equipped exactly with stock components. No modifications have been applied so far. I think it should normally work with that at best performance.

      @Moturd 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thank you for the comment and that's an interesting question. You're correct that the main jet is responsible for the last 1/4 throttle so I would start there but the needle jet also affects it. I would always recommend an OEM carb over a no name carb. Perhaps you could go up to 60 because it was too lean which is great for top speed but bad for engine life. I'd also do some plug reading to find some differences between the no name and OEM Mikuni. These are just my opinions though. Keep the rubber down brother!

    • @montecharly122
      @montecharly122 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thank you for quick reply. With that no name brand i could achievec nearly 60 then i stopped since i didn't want to stress that old japanese lady because she wssn't moved for long time. But the spark plug was also still sooty. Strange. So then i started with the MIKUNI to built it back to origin Version. Started yesterday with air srew out 1+1/4 turns out. Finally 1+3/4 turns out. Idle, response and acceleration was fine. I could end up at ca. 55. Sometimes she seems to be a little bit bogging but very slightly in lower rpm range. I check spark, wich seams to go more gray colour and measured cylinder head temperature which was ca. 130°C. I' am not sure if that is going too hot maybe she's going too lean now. I will try to adjust carefully next days again. Try to make it a little bit more richer. I don't plan to change any of those stock components since i think they should be best fit to this machine. But may be i' am wrong. It's not so easy here in Germany to get real OEM parts for reasonable price. It ' s almost rebuilt after market and sometimes not the same quality. For oil pump setting. I think the mark on the pulley should be in line with the bolt when all the free play in the gas cable has been taken off by moving the gas gripp until the slider starts to move, right? Because then the ramp on the pulley starts to increase.

    I also have a 2012 wr450f and wanted it street legal so took it to this old man that said he's been working on motorcycles his whole life. Big mistake I made. Wanted it street legal now I have a wire shortage that's frying the starter and relay or solenoid somewhere. Took it back to him and says he's too old can't work. Mechanic shops for motorcycles charge too much an hour just to troubleshoot problem. He used very cheap wire with any abrasion or cut on it it'll touch ground and cause a shortage which I think it did already. Friend of mine is recommending this other guy but will see what happens. These F4i’s seem to have been gaining in popularity recently. They were extremely popular bikes when they were new and then it seems around 2015 or so they had became just old bikes. Now it seems, people have realized these bikes are not only durable and fast, but they have insane performance for a 600. I owned a 2001 f4i back when it was almost new and I loved it, but I heard all the talk about the 600RR being better or move up to a 1000. So I’ve had liter bikes and RR’s, a new busa. Now I’m back to riding a 2004 F4i and it’s my favorite bike ever. I love the gixxer 750 and I’ll keep that bike just because, but the f4i is fast, comfortable, and smoother, more enjoyable to ride than any super sport or cruiser I’ve spent any amount of time on. My son got me this 04 that has very few miles so it only needed tires and fluids, was otherwise like new. I’ll never part with this bike.

    Great video, I too have a 2012 WR450 and I just got it street legal last week. I just got the license plate mounted today. I did most of the same things that you did, but did wire up the lights a little differently. I connected the positive wire for the tusk harness to the relay in front of the battery that turns on the lights after the bike is started. I like it because I don't have to have another switch on my handlebars and it doesn't turn the lights on until the bike is started, so it doesn't drain the battery. I also bought a switch from sicass racing that combines the start and kill switch into one switch, so that I could get rid of one more switch.

    Air filter was upside down, that is why it didn’t fit properly, it even says “this side up” on the side you had downward. Thank you for the video. 🤘🤘

    Dude thank you so much! My ex coworker knocked my bike over in our work parking lot and ruined it. Without this video, I never would've gotten my 2002 Honda CBR apart to find the issue. I really can't thank you enough! Keep doing watcha doing because even if you don't know what you're doing it's still helping people like me sooooooo much!❤❤

    Aloha🤙 my friend bought a honda CBR 4fi 2002 and he has such a problem that when the motorcycle is cold, the engine speed rises to 4k. but when the engine warms up, the speed becomes normal 1k-1.5k. Maybe you know what the problem is?

      It’s a built in automatic choke they’re meant to go up to 3-4k when warming up in cold

    Is it possible without the fuel rail being taken off and how much should I tighten the manual cct bolt down just enough for it not to raffle and maybe a little more or no

      Hmm. You may be get your hand in there with just the airbox off but my hand wouldn't fit without the fuel rail off

      @@Moturd Do you think you will be doing a video of the foot control unit removal and replacement? I'm getting the whole control lever on both sides powder coated and want to make sure It's possible for me to take it off and replace it without completely destroying my bike, or doing something dangerous.

    What a difference ten years obviously makes! I have a 1991 F2, and although I realize that the F4i will probably leave my carb-powered model in the dust, the CCT replacement/adjustment procedure is NOWHERE NEAR this involved! I have a Haynes manual (with pictures--yay!!) and it's basically just removing the right-side lower fairing panel, and you're right there. Good advice, though, on securing the tank with bungee cords--will definitely remember that tip as I dive into this repair.

      Sweet man! I have no experience with street bikes that have carbs, only dirt bikes. I'm glad that people are keeping them going though. Someday, when everything is electric, that will be a special little piece of history.
