    I just noticed a huge proportion of my traffic are coming from vi-control.net. Whether you love it or hate it, thank you for checking this video out. It did take some time to make and I'm glad it's getting noticed.
    Firstly, WHAT HAVE I STARTED!
    Secondly, I know that a lot of you expert programmers are going to really hate how some of these libraries sound. I firstly want to begin by saying, I only had a limited time to use most of these libraries. I would not count myself as a good programmer by any regard so I know a lot sound a bit (probably very) bad. However, I did actually want to give you all an out-of-the-box comparison which is why some of the samples don't sound up to par to other demo videos.
    The samples have not been touched in any way other than a bit of modulation and expression and velocity. I know with more time, they could sound superb and I am trying to make videos that compare them much more in depth.
    This was more of a fun video to make and if you are going to pick a sample library based on this video alone, I think you are going into buying one waaay too quickly. I absolutely suggest checking out as many videos as you can before you make a purchase.
    That being said, if you are going to buy a library for all round realistic orchestration. I'd suggest one of these.
    Berlin Brass
    CineBrass
    Cinematic Studio Brass (if you are more into playability rather than the sound itself)
    Spitfire Symphonic Brass
    EWQL Hollywood Brass (A little hard to programme, but they sound great!)
    Noteperformer (If you use Sibelius).
    Anything else does not come up to standard with these libraries and I think most people would agree.
    Happy sample library exploring! (or whatever you're supposed to call it) ;).

    I think a good way to look at this comparison is to view it in terms of how far one needs to go, programming wise, from 'out-of-the-box" to a polished finished product with each of these libraries. Every library will have to be treated differently, that much is obvious, but how much work needs to be done to make it sound good (how much work to make it sit in a room, how much programming involved, etc). For example, I use Sample Modeling Brass quite a lot. In fact, I think I used them almost exclusively in my Dreamworks and 20th Century Fox mockups. They sound quite good, BUT they take a lot of work to get there. This demo really exemplified that fact. Good effort and thanks for sharing!

    Thank you - I've got BBC SO Core and was looking at other libraries to see what their brass was like for classical (especially with BF approaching). Just composing for fun and have been looking at Cinebrass Sonure. Thank you again - it must have taken some time to put this video together!

    I'm doing many of these libs comparison videos so I know the time it takes. Hell, I posted one comparing 53 strings libraries and I didn't want to do anymore comparison videos after that. Yet, I think that one needs to take the time to adapt the performance to the library being used. You made some of these sound exceptionally bad while they don't sound like this. At all.

    • @SamuelStalderOST
      @SamuelStalderOST  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I do indeed understand what you are saying. These definitely could have been treated better, however, I did take a few months break off of this project so I didn't exactly go back into the MIDI to configure it as well as modulation and expression. As I had borrowed most of these libraries to make a video on them, all I had were the bounces so I could not have edited them anyway. I will definitely provide more in depth looks at libraries when I get the chance to properly look at them, rather than borrow them for a few hours to make this. (I was also 17 when I made this and self taught in MIDI programming).
      Also, holey moley, 53 string libraries is a ton. I stopped this project after 10 as it took up so much time. I respect the fact you were able to do that and still keep the quality of the sound libraries. I hope to realise and do that in the future. Comments like this help improve the channel, so thanks for the constructive criticism.
      Maybe to help a bit, I do have MIDI mockups of various pieces of music that show the capabilities of the some of these brass libraries on my channel. I'll admit, those were done with much care than this video.

    Thanks a lot! Surprising to find the levels of entitlement reach a point where a free 45 minutes resource like that gets hammered. It's very useful to know how a library sounds like very minimal midi work or mixing. It's a good exercise in hearing to hear "through usage" and focus on the raw mechanics and sound of the samples. There are enough demos and screencasts etc with dedicated programming by various folks with varios styles and skills.

    I like Berlin Brass the best. Thank you for taking the time to make this comparison.
    I own Berlin Brass myself and use it as my main brass library. For anyone considering buying the library: it's worth it. Especially, and I must emphasise this here, for Kontakt and not (yet) for Sine. The Kontakt version contains an incredibly valuable gem: the Time Machine patches. These can be automated with a MIDI CC and stretched or compressed (in length). Short notes thus become as realistic as it gets. I assume that the SusAcc-Patch was used in the demo. The TM patches would be able to make these passages sound even better and yet BB beats everything in this comparison imho.

    Metro Ark 1, CASPIAN, CineBrass PRO, The Orchestra, and surprisingly the Native Instruments Symphony Brass. Those are the libraries that sounded the closest to what I think most of us are looking for. Wonder how the new JXL x Orchestral Tools library compares. It’s like $800 though haha

    make sure all brasses sit in the same "room" equally.. because a bone dry library vs a reverberated roomed library is unfair to compare. Also make sure you use the libraries as should. It seems in many cases that the exact same midi data is used instead of redoing it for each library properly (key switches when needed, or dynamics properly etc)

    • @SamuelStalderOST
      @SamuelStalderOST  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Rogier, good point. I left the libraries as they were for when the brass was playing only. However, when the whole orchestra played, I did add reverb, but now that I look back, I do see what you mean. Some of the libraries could have used some reverb.
      With the MIDI data in Mahler's piece, I did tweak it for each one to make the libraries sound natural, but even when you push the modulation down all the way to the bottom, there is still a bit of that growl (e.g Metropolis Ark 1). I did not want to use expression as that would only control the volume.
      And with the reverb, anytime there was only the brass library playing, I only wanted to play it with the original mics straight out of the box whether it sounds dry or wet. I do get your point, and will definitely try to clean it up anytime I do other videos like this.
      I had also left this project for 6 months, so when I came back to doing it again, I had forgotten the layout of the project files and could not be asked to do it all again xD. That's also why a few of the patches sound pretty bad in some contexts.
      Which section of the orchestra do you think I should do next? (IMO, there haven't been enough comparisons of woodwind libraries of late :))

  • @SamFerrara
    @SamFerrara 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Man, I think the bigger problem here isn't really the programming, though that needs a lot of work - it's that you're not using the right articulations when compared to the original. The trumpet line in Han, for example, there's a bunch of legato playing which in ALL of your examples are played with either staccato or marcato samples. Seriously, I just had this video recommended to me, and I have to echo the other commenters here - a LOT of learning these libraries needs to be done.
    And for what it's worth, none of this should be considered "out of the box". "Out of the box" would still mean that the proper articulations were loaded. And on top of that, you mentioned in your pinned comment that you messed with velocity, mod and expression. So that, topped with wrong articulations, means that this is very much not an "out of the box" representation and is simply a poor job. I'm sorry.

    • @SamuelStalderOST
      @SamuelStalderOST  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, after 2 months, I do indeed realise that. Hopefully I've improved since then in my programming. _hint_ _hint_ check out my other videos :))

    There's something wrong with your VSCO2 and Cinematic Studio Brass
    Even VSCO2 CE doesn't sound that bad - no high frequencies in trumpet, so muted horns, these pauses between the notes...
    Cinematic Studio Brass has something wrong with tales

  • @braunhausmedia

    No offense, but simply throwing a midi file at a bunch of sample libraries is a terrible way to compare them. Each library needs to be "played," which means knowing the quirks of the library and playing with feeling. It saddens me that some poor person is going to watch this and think this is the best these libraries can sound. Midi isn't a robotic player piano and none of the libraries deserve to be treated this way.

    • @SamuelStalderOST
      @SamuelStalderOST  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Now if only I had more time with these libraries, I could have definitely played with the MIDI and CC controls to make them sound better. Unfortunately, I only had time with some of them. I also took in the fact some of these libraries are not made for the pieces in the film. I had also left the project for months and only now did I just record these bounces and upload them (I was 17 at the time I made this and did not have much of an idea on how programming good samples worked). However, I do intend to make really in-depth videos on these libraries to show their true nature.
      Yes, this was a rushed video, however, I do hope to make in depth videos on some of these libraries so that this video can be used as the 'contents' page to segway into another video which gives a better review of the library.
      My recent video is a demo of Spitfire Albion ONE, Hopefully that can show you what can be done if I don't have to rely on stems and a few hours total with the libraries.

  • @jakegearhart

    Brass will never sound right unless you adjust the tuning. Brass instruments physically cannot play in equal temperament and so it sounds unrealistic and major thirds sound terrible because they are highly out of tune.
