    I've learned over my years of working to never give 100 percent at work. I only give 50 percent now. When I give 60 percent they really love me and at 70 percent they want to promote me. Worked at a job giving 100 percent and they loved me and my hard work and kept looking right over me for every promotion. Left the job and started a new strategy and it's been great. Now whenever I want more money if my job doesn't give me a promotion, i just go for a new job. Don't even waste time arguing, just leave

    First things first here from someone who has worked for a long time: no ONE is indispensable, you can be replaced. Having said this, she is right, when I left a certain job, it took 2 people to replace me AND they had to pay a Manager 10K bonus to not quit because the work I was doing there was tricky and had a lot of tough personalities involved. Staying in a job for longer than 5 years without any movement or opportunities to move on and grow within a company is a BIG red flag.

      Two people AND an bonus so the manager wouldn't walk too!? This shows me their employee success team was failing, they should have been advancing you and making sure you were getting exactly what you wanted from your career.

      Depends which industry..

    • @robbytherob
      @robbytherob 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I agree with Hanna. It does depend on the industry. When I was working at a brokerage firm the folks at the trade desk were exactly where they always wanted to be. Moving between the different types such as fixed income or options would have been more of a lateral move. No opportunities in 5 years definitely sounds horrible though.
      Sometimes you have to insert yourself into the projects or ask around if anyone needs help. People notice those things. Surprisingly a lot of folks in corporate just want to collect that comfy check and do the bare minimum. Don’t be that person.

      @@robbytherob nothing wrong with staying in a position if the pay keeps steadily increases. looking for new projects and work again sounds great unless it comes on top of existing work. i suggest being the person who does the work they are hired for OR the new work they want to do NOT BOTH. Don't be the fool who takes on 2 or more jobs in effort to "move up". if thats not how its gonna work at current employer, find the work or project you want to do at a new employer. your pay will be at market rate while workload will be the same or even less. sorry but your suggestion sounds exhausting. remember employer wants the most work for least pay and you want the opposite. do whats best for you.

    • @robbytherob
      @robbytherob 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@asadb1990 Sorry but I respectfully disagree with you. It may sound exhausting to you but not to others. I guess my advise goes to the folks that don't have project management skills or never worked on an important project before. As a manager, why would I volunteer someone to work on a project that has no experience? If you are someone that is hungry and wants to move up, a good way to showcase your commitment to the firm is by volunteering yourself to help out in any capacity with the project.
      Maybe I am speaking from personal experience, but the way I managed to move up was by inserting myself into projects early on when I had no project experience. By my 4th or 5th contract role, I had a laundry list of projects I worked on and became the right man at the right time for the job. I would have never built that experience if I didn't go above and beyond during my early days.

Then they start to call you in for talks of why is it that you dont perform as is expected and made the work so stressfull that many are leaving and new people that come to work stay for 2-3 months and then leave. The reason is that I've always strived to help people and mistakenly assumed that others were the same. While many are helpful, many others are not. Data is technically the hardest part, and I did my job well, and the boss hoped another "me" would come along to take my place. Never happened, and people I trained started moving up, even though they didn't grasp data entry as well as I did. The final straw for me was when I found out I'd be teaching a whole group of new recruits data entry, but then they would learn from someone else the program specialist position. I work in the public sector and in my experience incompetence is too often rewarded with promotion. It's either a seniority thing or management is trying to rid of someone by promoting them. Then that person becomes someone elses problem. Also, when the incompetent people realize that working hard doesn't get them promoted but earning brownie points in other ways such as volunteering, committees, creating problems and then solutions, online courses etc., the incompetence gets promoted while they don't even know how to do their job.

    This happened to me at my last job. I was the top guy Nationwide in the company at what I did. I worked over 40 hours a week, and people I trained, along with week old employees go promoted as leads over me. When I asked how did that happen, because it was the ELEPHANT in the building, management gave an excuse like we really like what you do, we just don't fill now is the time for you to take this kind of position. People quit, and took extended leaves and me (prior to me wising up) came in everyday, never late and worked 10+ hours shifts daily. I did everything in each department. Then I wanted to transfer to another location due to it being closer to me. They responded with the grass is always greener on the other side. I trained the employees in 3 different departments for 3 separate locations. I know all this too well. Overbooked and overlooked.

    85% of the time a promotion is a thing for the good ole boys. Guys that are extremely good at being cool around other guys….Cool guys. It’s a secret club and you’re not invited. Bosses love to be surrounded by ‘the boys’ all day long.
    You know who is getting promoted next, it’s not the hard worker, the great communicator or the person that shows up every day, it’s the one that already chit chats with the boss all day. The less a boss enjoys chit chatting with you the lower your promotability.
    You can on rare occasions get promoted by having a new boss that you are able to communicate well with. But if the bosses walk past you and barely say anything more than hello to you then you’re wasting your time trying for a promotion. Bosses are looking for the good ole boys

    I would like to add to be careful about accepting a lateral position and thinking it means career growth. It can mean more growth if you are learning new skills, but if it’s the same job in a different department then you have to ask yourself if it’s worth it especially if you like what you are doing. Unless you are taking a lateral to leave a bad situation, you should always inquire about growth and promotional opportunities. I made the mistake of trusting that they would do the right thing and it was very obvious to me that the promotional dollars were going to the perceived superstars and no recognition would come my way for administrative task work. I definitely agree, and each situation is different. For example, I was fortunately able to be promoted to an assistant department manager from the specialty role I was in prior. The issue was that I was so good at that role to where they had me doing my managerial tasks as well as that position. I was the only person they could trust to do everything effectively/correctly and we’re in no rush to hire people for that position. When they did hire someone to take over they used me as an example of someone who should be doing the job (which isn’t a bad thing), but their standards were set so high that they would fire those people shortly after, leaving me to doing the extra work again. As a result I felt burnt out, and it’s one of the many reasons why I’m quitting my job.

      It can be very helpful to manage expectations and set boundaries. Obviously it's not healthy for you to be doing two jobs - no wonder why you quit... everyone lost in the situation. It feels cocky to be like, 'know the person we hire will not be as good for X amount of time,' can sometimes help other members of management know that it's going to take time. Speciality roles take forever to gain expertise on, if they want the replacement to be successful training and time is needed!

I worked with someone in management and expected him to dump years of wisdom and experience for me to just soak up and learn and I was surprised that I got the most basic information that I already knew out of it. Very anti-climactic and disappointing. If you want to get promoted you have to get noticed by the right people. Being hardworking will not get you noticed because not all bigwigs on top are hardworking, so why would they be looking at attributes they themselves don't have? You're probably just better off creating connections or buying a latte for someone in management or HR.

    It really explains why back when I was in a leadership roll my new supervisor was trying so hard to either get me fired or moved out of a lead position.
    In the end she succeeded in bumping me out but then got fired a few months later. All the crap in between really opened my eyes and told me how much my worth was to the company.

    I don't quit and move on because I'm very near retirement and will get a good pension when the final day ends. I just accepted my fate and started being like the guy in the movie 'Office Space'; I do the work the bosses want done while slacking off on the lower-priority stuff. Works great, less stress, and now I'm just waiting for the whole thing to collapse as the freshly-minted MBAs implement the latest in management theories to "improve" internal operations versus dealing with constantly improving customer interactions.

    You are absolutely correct about some of the ways the 'management" views people. This is especially true in IT where skills really do make a difference. Managers are often not even able to distinguish between the huge levels of difference in talent that is obvious to senior technical staff. In normal companies they actually want to dummy down people into mediocrity.
    When I took my own money and started accelerating growth of my rental business I went from 2 to 28 rentals in 4 years and by 2023 adding 9 more. This is life changing and made me a multimillionaire. Go figure. No corporate red tape. I just worked through issues as I came to them.
    I just got let go of a large government contract that will fail again. They said they likely will bring me back. I made great money doing documentation mostly. It is obvious and almost a joke that people as you go up do not even understand the complexities of large mainframe systems that have been created over 60 years, yes over half a century. You can not even explain how complex thing are to them because they lack the capacity.

    Bottom line, when you are too good, and you want a raise, here are three effective steps: 1. Look for a better job or at least one that pays more, securing an offer. 2. From your present job, Request a promotion/raise. 3. Getting what you want from the old job, will mean staying there and doing what you have always done but making more. In the case that you did not get a promotion/raise, tell them you are sorry, but you are leaving for the new job. Nothing validates asking for more money, than having someone else willing to pay that asking price.

      @@pothaudio Didn't say anything about letting them know you are looking, or that you found a job offer that pays you more. All they have to know is that you want a raise. You may tell them AFTER, they rejected your request for a raise, but you don't have to.

      I would add never to accept a counteroffer from current employer as that means that they could have paid you this higher wage all along, and that now they have the upper hand in the chess game knowing you may not be as loyal as they’d like.

    • @dcabral00
      @dcabral00 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@snowbird7377 I agree, specially since you are getting it from somewhere else. Employers universally know, that you want more money. Ideally, the right time to negotiate your salary is when you initially get the job offer. It is very likely that you can always make more as you gain experience, but unless you change jobs let's say every four to five years, is probably money you lost with the current salary that was not adjusting for inflation. Ultimately, if you are ready to ask for a raise, you should also be ready to move on. To effectively get a raise, you have to have some leverage because whoever is deciding to promote you or not, knows your value to the company, and can sense whether you have options.

      that's also because of the way the managers are @rwarded@ most of them are told to input data into the computer, data created by the team members, they look good and don't care more than that as they steal the good aspects for themselves and blame everything else on the team members. what we have is bad managers, not trained and with no skills. it reminds me of space office, the movie.

    I'm a workaholic and in one of my Engineering jobs - My bosses wanted me off the team because I made him look bad - Program Management and the Customer used slides I prepared on my own time to determine the state of the program - So I left to work for another company and the project fell apart! To be fair the project was doomed because the Chief Engineer did not hire a Parts Manager to track the aircraft parts and they were not able to put the plane back together!
    In another job I replace 2 senior officers at the Pentagon and another senior officer that was sent into the Middle East to support Desert Storm - I did get a promotion from the Air Force because of my great job performance - it was my last military promotion. At the end of military career I was asked to stay beyond my mandatory retirement date because the US Air Force needed my expertise - I stayed and even thought I was not going to get promoted again. My goal was to see the US Air Force do it's best. I enjoyed all the jobs the US Air Force let me do - It was a wonderful experience and I'm grateful to have the privilege to serve in the US military.

    If you are good (or the best) at your job, you will never get promoted. It makes zero financial sense for a corporation to lose it's fastest/best grunt worker or producer and then having to replace them with a new hire who is slow af and needs trained. They only care about profit margins, and they make the most keeping the best workers at the bottom, working the hardest, for the least amount of money. Minimum wage DESERVES minimum effort. Don't bust your a$$ for a company who doesn't value you (if they did, they'd pay you what you are worth) or refuses to promote you.

  • @TagGeorge

    This applies outside of office jobs also. Especially the part you stated about being replaced by more than one person. Although when I changed positions at my current employer they did replace me with only one person. What they did instead was have me take some of the responsibilities with me to my new position along with moving other responsibilities to other people. So this reduced my replacement down to only the core responsibility of which I still have to go back and help frequently. Still they have trouble keeping people in that position and from time to time hint around to forcing me back into that old position. I have been told multiple times I was the best person they ever had in that position by even the highest level person at my location. So when I have applied for other positions that would take me out of the spectrum that would allow me to help or do my old job it does not and likely will not happen. This certainly is not a situation that should encourage the dedication and loyalty I have given.
    Also the comment about working the most does not help is correct. Nine years of 70 to 90 hours a week with 7 of those years perfect attendance never got me anywhere at my previous employer even with maxed out performance reviews.

    In a mediocre or poorly performing workplace competence is often perceived as a threat, and you might have to put energy in fending all kinds of aggressions and traps. In particular when it outshines the norm. Never forget your value and keep learning. Don't debase yourself. Much of your wellbeing, growth, happiness and success revolves around you surrounding yourself with the right people. If you chose to stay in a dysfuntional environment for some reason, cultivating a stoic mentality without sacrificing your soul can be helpful. Or you disengaging and invest your freetime to a greater reward. Withdraw a bit and create a reminding vacuum.

    I was hired as an entry level and two men were hired a couple months after me same position. When it came to a promotion after 2 years I found out that those two men were "secretly promoted" months before me. The reason for the delay from what I found out was that upper managememt was arguing because they all wanted me on their team and it delayed my promotion for several months. I am pretty angry about that- why keep the other promotions a secret? Oh cause they were afraid I would ask for one and leave 😒

I’ve been passed for promotions several times and given bad reviews by my boss when I complained to him after being the top performer on his entire team. He was clearly intimated by me and tried everything to undermine me. I consistently preformed well month after month and he said “there is no value of a top performer unless I’m able to share to help others on the team” after that I’ve cut back a bit and have been questioned about it. They will fire me once I stop producing like before. I will be looking for another opportunity if I find something that pays close to or more then what I’m making.

    Wish Id learned this long ago. My former job I was doing management work for minimum wage. My boss and store manager wouldn’t allow me to promote as they could not afford to lose me. Got a better paying job at another company and all of a sudden the egomaniac store manager offered me the position. These scumbags will always do whatever it takes to keep you down at the lowest pay rate for doing the most work. There were at least 3 other people (who eventually followed my lead and quit) that were in the same boat. To this day he still wonders why nobody wants to stay with the company and be underpaid, overworked, and under appreciated.
    All they had to do was give me the $20/hr for the work I was doing and the set schedule I wanted and I would’ve stayed. Fuck that 5 letter company and I feel bad for all who work there.

BUT, a good company recognizes this with big raises and "title" promotions. These are promotions where you get a new title (with more prestige) but essentially you keep doing the same job as before.
