Do not underestimate visibility. It's probably the biggest lesson I have taken from my most recent job. I was up for promotion and on paper my performance was almost double that of another candidate. But he had visibility to the leadership team and they knew his name. I didn't get it. It's an important lesson, you have to sell yourself or the work you are doing will go unnoticed.

You probably are stuck in a place that makes your work invisible. Hard work is always better than cheap tricks in the name of smart work. Wishing you a promotion and good luck ahead!

    1:10 promotion season.
3:00 how the promotion, the designation processes work.
3:15 HR/ people committees set together and evaluate individual employee.
5:50 get designated in the next review cycle
    6:15 perception is reality
6:50 perception management in workplace, at some point you need to think about how to manage perceptions of your peers. of your clients. of your supervisors. a very tight relationship between your performance and perception.
8:00 high performer; rockstar. create the significant impact for the organization.
    -- -- --
    8:45
what can you do to increase the visibility at work?
first, strategically think about the interaction: this week and next week. with senior partner and so on... you make that count.
you have maybe a certain role in this meeting. if you're politically smart, you can align with team lead: something you can lead and be responsible for.
to avoid being a person sitting there not saying anything.
10:20 second, clearly communicate your successes. for example, the weekly one-to-ones. direct supervisor.
    the result, the impact.
    10:50 end of week emails.
the highlights: what have been achieved.
the lowlights: what you are struggling
the next steps: what are next weeks.
    11:10 third,
engage to activities beyond your day-to-day job, such as team event, team dinner, charity work maybe. which are sponsored by the partners, senior partners in organization.
12:20 fourth, be mindful of how you say things. "we" is not so convincing.
your individual contribution to what has happened.
12:40 fifth tip: be close to the headquarter: to board member, to senior leader, to decision makers.

Bro, this is the TOP 1 tip. Is sad that they dont teach the importance of this in college. I have many friends who work like crazy, bring value to the company, but they just don't show or dont care to show. If you dont say you did it, dont expect other to say it for you!

So true indeed. As Harvey Specter once said "just doing a great job is not the whole job". He meant that making a good impression, going the extra mile, make yourself visable and rememberably is also part of the job if you want to move up the ranks. Its just a TV show but quite interesting.

I really needed that last sentence as a reminder. Ironically, I coach my employees on doing this to be promoted but I've only recently begun to do it myself. My work spoke for itself with the previous leaders but now I have to position myself for the new team to know who I am and my achievements, capabilities, etc.

It’s not just about showing, because their contribution is already visible to those who directly benefit from it and it’s also in the quality of the collective end-result. It’s really about claiming and promoting your own contributions before someone else does.

I think the mentality you learn in school actually harms you professionally.
In school you have to be conscientious, show humility, listen to the teacher, etc. The environment itself punishes you for standing up for yourself and rewards compliance. But if you are ambitious at work this mentality you internalized thanks to school will harm you.
School doesn't teach you when or how to say 'no' and how to sell yourself and your achievements.

I searched the entire content of this channel and found that this is the only channel with such authentic content. We are very lucky that someone directly from McKinsey or consulting is teaching us their experiences and learnings. There are more than a thousand other channels whose authors have worked in one of the big four consulting firms, but they talk about their lives and jobs, useful only to those who are looking for insight about working within big fours. However, this channel is different. It covers topics from other channels and also teaches us the valuable lessons they learned from working there. So, someone who is not looking for a job in the big four or big six but wants to learn about corporate and business, about their most senior leaders, and how higher systems work can find it all here.

This is all very good advice, but we all know in order to get the fastest pay increase/rise ... is to work 2-3 years at a firm and jump ship especially at early stages of your career since a wider range of big firms someone worked at, the more impressive it is than working a handful years at one firm, as you can showcase a wide range of knowledge from how multiple firms behave than the depth of 1 firm.

I’m the flip-side: I always pay close attention to the way people say “we” versus “I.” More often than not, I find the people say say “I” the most are narcissistic and think they know everything. It’s actually been a great indicator for me to avoid those people and create teams that share the “we” mindset. After all, how much did you REALLY do by yourself? If you drill down, you’ll probably discover that someone, somewhere helped in some way.

So my principle in communicating the results is to give a fair credit to all contributors, not forgetting the “backend” colleagues who often don’t get a spotlight to present the whole project.

    • @dekippiesip
      @dekippiesip ปีที่แล้ว +2

Except if you actually did do nearly everything yourself. My example is a bit extreme, but I just built an entire process that existed in datastage(ETL tool) from scratch in python. Made the loading about 60x as fast and it was a much more general algorithm where changes too only required metadata changes.
I can actually say that I did that for more than 90% by myself. Even more, a senior colleague who was a datastage veteran actually discouraged me from doing it that way. I ended up doing a lot of work in my free time as well just to make it happen and because I was just so annoyed by the manual rote work and how slow it was. I as a junior dev actually had to go over his head to the product owner to even get it through to a wider audience, and have it considered as something to maybe be implemented in production.
Never underestimate what you as an individual can do on your own if you truly believe in something. You can actually single handedly make huge things happen. But if someone else plays a significant part then I agree you should mention him/her.

Wow! I didn't think about "we" as being a negative. In my current role I think it is obvious I lead things, but I am trying to bring someone else into the team that I want to empower to do what I do.
I totally hear you on being close to headquarters and plan to visit there about twice per month in order to stay connected. Doesn't hurt to make that visible as boss's boss feels it is important to visit our location at about the same frequency.
It involves a 45 minute to 2.5 hour drive or staying in hotel on my own dime, but worth it.
I am a more senior worker, but want to make a significant difference at my company regarding HSE and Sustainability. And I know I can.
But only if I remain visible. Thanks so much for your video.

This is one of the most valuable and useful videos ever made on this topic.
I've ALWAYS wanted to grow in the various companies I've worked in but, maybe due also to this "lack" of visibility, I've never got promoted.
Maybe in my next career, once I'll have larned how to properly manage others' perceptions about me, I'll get more chances to get promoted.

Seeking advice. I'm a 2nd year analyst. What if I'm in the current situation where I am overworked & I have my deadlines are set, but I am giving it my 100% to make those deadlines, whcih is already tough. Most in the office are talking & wasting time & I know they will miss their deadlines as they are 1st year analyst & do not realize what the calendar cycle is like. So my plan is to now focus on work & making those deadlines & getting into a position where I'm not behind (as I'm in catch-up mode) and then when I get a better handle of the workload, then I'll have time to do the kiss-ass/visibility. I'm thinking the most important is to get your work done by the deadlines, then once you got a handle of that, then you can work on tasks that will get your promoted. My 1st year I did the visibility thing but what happened was that I spent my work day talking a lot, but then working late/burning out to meet deadlines/missing deadlines. Also what happens when you are visible is that you are also someone to think of for help w/ ad hoc tasks, which take away from main tasks. I got no problem if I can get my normal work done, but I struggle w/ just getting normal work done. So wonder what other people do? Ask for less work? I am already doing best to try to be efficient (order meal prep, have housecleaner, etc.). I'm in the rat race

Very important point indeed. If you make impact at a client or with a project it's important this somehow gets the ear of more senior management within your company. At the end they are the ones who have to agree on a raise or promotion suggested by your manager. The more you get noticed in a positive way the better it is. You can steer this pretty well yourself too. And in my personal situation there were a lot of co-worked that gave me credits a lot which helped me with promotions.

This is honestly where I struggle, as someone who is "introverted", and on the autism spectrum; I struggle to communicate and almost have breakdowns if asked to present in a big meeting or align with a bunch of stakeholders whom I've never met before - and thus I usually ask someone else to do it instead so I can focus on my own work. I add value in the background through analysis, building process models, maybe making some BI dashboards - but am always known as the 'technical guy' who supports rather than a subject matter expert who is willing to go be extroverted and align with a bunch of stakeholders. Often, i see the ones with less knowledge who are more vocal get promoted faster, and its obvious to see how and why; but I also often find it to be quite unfair.
Do you have any tips for "visibility" or "promotions" - if your personality doesn't really support the tips you share in the video, but in reality, you are adding value in the background?

In my experience visibility can be taken two ways, for people good at the job it’s great. For those trying to kiss ass and aren’t great in their client work it tends to be used a stick to beat people with.

I've seen it. I used to sit in a committee, and the run of the mill workers often kissed the ass of the boss. They agreed with everything he said, trying to get ahead. I was a run of the mill worker also. I knew this guy wasn't impressed and I knew this was a dead end job, so I would push back and go the opposite route of offending him. Thankfully he had a sense of humor.

Agree, being very active in eg office activities will usually not help you get promoted if your actual work is bad.

Nope. In most corporate places I have been, measurable work output is irrelevant. The only thing that matters is the perception that YOU solved problems that make your superiors look better.

@@dominikvonlavante6113 yes, agree, but not doing your base work well, also leaves a perception - it depends on the manager how he/she deals with it

Despite the importance of visibility, I feel like it is important to read the cultural context as well. Here in Latinamerica where hierarchy is highly valued (despite consulting companies repeating the narrative from other 1st world countries), trying to follow these guidelines unfortunately has let me to be negatively labeled as ambitious.
I love you videos, do you have any advice on how to find a balance on these contexts?

    • @pregret
      @pregret ปีที่แล้ว +1

hierarchy is in every culture except America and Scandinavia I think. The balance is you need to kiss ass first and give credit to your seniors. Be visible but praise them, never take credit yourself

By quitting to a better job. You owe them NOTHING. They will throw you to the streets without notice because deleting the box with your name on it makes a PowerPoint slide more symmetrical. You have the value of a box in PowerPoint to higher level management.

Sonst gut.

Don't pursue promotion first... It will get you promoted to the level of incompetence (and you'll get stuck there). You need to focus on the things you like to do, and be passionate about it (this might take a while to find). As soon as you've found that, you won't be working a day in your life again and high visibility will follow.

    • @jinushaun
      @jinushaun ปีที่แล้ว +2

No, hard work doesn’t get you promoted. Visibility doesn’t automatically follow. Hard workers get promoted despite themselves.

    • @andrewd6956
      @andrewd6956 ปีที่แล้ว

Definitely, pursue it if you have the prerequisites even if competition is fierce. I did so and I was rewarded even after failing at the first attempt. I applied for a more senior role internally, knowing full well that a far more experienced colleague would secure the role. He did secure the role, but I became visible as the next candidate up. I received glowing feedback, and I was declared the next one up. After 6 months of waiting an identical post became vacant and I secured the role.

  • @Solis_Occasum

This is even more relevant in today's corporate world, where many individuals are choosing to work from home. While I am not denigrating their work, I have noticed that some people are "hiding" behind their computer screens during this era of remote work. However, most of the people I know have been able to perform their jobs successfully even when working from home. Of course, there was a time when working from home was necessary in many corporations, but even now that most things have returned to normal, people still prefer to work from home as much as possible, even if their corporation requires them to come into the office for certain days each week.
Personally, I have always made an effort to be present in the office as often as possible, even though my colleagues did not understand why. As a result, I have excelled in terms of salary and career progression, which aligns with the concept of visibility.

Come to audi, then you will find that networking and being visible will get you promoted. And in the end you have many managers who dont have any clue, are literaly shit but are visible.
    Everything has two sides.
"If you compare two people who are equally good, the visible one will be chosen". True, but this is often not how it works.

Promotions that are perception driven is bound to have individual biases
Promotions that are delayed are meaningless to the individual, IMHO.
A good employee will leave when they are not recognized. The food for thought here is for rhe orgnizations to be bias feee
