    The Tektons actually seem precise, just calibrated too low. Shows why we shouldn't blindly trust a factory calibration, too many variables, conditions, shipping, storage, etc. Thanks for the great vids.

      Icon has the same problem with some not being calibrated correctly. You just have to return them for one that is properly calibrated. Tekton’s are usually right on the money to their variable allowance. Never be afraid to buy a Tekton tool. Their customer support is incredible. They care about the quality and performance of their tools.

    Seeing this makes me want to buy the ICON 1/2 Split Beam on this weekend's 20% off sale. That way I don't have to break out the ICON digital for lugs and stuff like that. Amazing that Harbor Freight puts forward so many good offerings in this space.

    Another great video! As you probably know, Precision Instruments has 3/8” versions in 10-50 ft.lbs and 20-100 ft.lbs; they also have these same wrenches in metric and in.lbs variants. I already have the 1/2” PI, but wish I had the Icon instead because of the 90-tooth ratchet head. I want to get a 3/8" 10-50 ft.lbs split beam, and like you, I want HF to release an Icon version.

  • @lcar9871
    @lcar9871 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    What surprises me the most is how many torque wrenches still use a low tooth-count ratchet head, including Snap-On at 36 tooth from your previous split-beam video. I see your comment from 5 months ago where Tekton upgraded to a 72 tooth head. Based on your testing, as well as what I see on other channels, he ICON brand continues to astound me. It seems HF is doing two things here: building quality torque wrenches AND forcing other companies to catch up a bit! Great channel - thank you!

    • @Tools-Tested
      @Tools-Tested  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yep my thoughts exactly, I know most want to hate on HF but when it comes to torque tools and even Icon its surprising. Im not saying everything is good, they sell a lot of junk as well. Im really curious how the new Hercules line performs, the extreme batterys have Samsung cells and are decently priced compared to other manufactures. Thanks! No problem!

    • @rosshenry7822
      @rosshenry7822 ปีที่แล้ว

      I like your videos man. But I must say, it's wild how you're selling people on the Icon split beam 1/2 torque wrench being comparable to snap-on. It's not really close at all. You left out important details. Let me explain. Firstly I own a lot of gearwrench and Mac and other Taiwanese made tools. And I love them. Not everything needs to be snap-on. Now, that being said when it comes to Torque wrenches, snap-on is the best. again, please, let me explain. I have the 1/2 split beam from snap-on in green. And 2 Snap-on Tech-Angles. One 3/8 and one 1/2. All 3 Torque wrenches not only torque on fasteners but they also torque in reverse. For left hand thread. The Icon does not. Also, my snappy's account for deflection angle and degrees. Icon does not. Also very important to mention my snap-on warranty is 1 year full replacement no questions asked. After that, I still have service. I can have my snap-on guy re-calibrate it for free. And he comes whenever I need him to. Anytime. If it requires more than that, I can have it sent to snap-on to be rebuilt. So it's not accurate to say the icon has a better warranty. What if Harbour Freight doesn't have any in stock? You'd be s.o.l 😅
      Also the fit and finish on all Taiwanese made torque wrenches has felt sub-par to snap on. Guys love the idea of owning snap-on quality tools for the price of Pittsburgh/Icon. But that's simply not true. If it was, we'd all stop buying snap on. More technicians might get into the industry then. I had some Harbor freight tools that lasted me years as a small engine and power sports mechanic. When I went back to the automotive industry, I then had pry bars and ratchets fail on the first Rusty brake calipers and bolt fasteners they encountered. The Icon torque wrenches are great for someone who doesn't use it day in and day out to tighten things that affect people's safety and well-being. That's no joke. It's my belief that In the first video you made, you didn't actually test them in real world conditions. In my opinion that is. I don't stand in front of a nice clean John Deere tractor torquing clean fasteners 1000 times in a row all gentle like. Torque some lug nuts with grease on your hands. Torque a fly wheel. Maybe a valve cover. Maybe some ARP Head studs. Real world stuff. That would make a good video. And one more thing, the icon split beam has a crappy plastic cover over the torque range indicator that's easy to knock loose. I'm not saying the Icon split beam doesn't have a place in professional shops and settings, but it's not some magical answer to replace 5-6-700 dollar Torque wrenches. Mark my words. In 5-6 months from now, we'll see more reviews on the icon torque wrenches, and I'm willing to wager it'll show how the sacrifices made to keep the cost low and affordable will give way to shortcomings. I hear a lot of people say how it looks exactly like snap-on. Looks don't dictate performance. Another example, I dig my icon sockets. They do the job. They look nice. Good storage. They look exactly like my snap-on sockets but they don't come close. Not even a little. My flank drive sockets are like comparing an Aston Martin to a 1996 Honda civic.

    Just heads up - it is my understanding - that only mechanical (beam, dial, click, etc.) torque wrenches need to be cycled. They have mechanical components; pivot points, etc. - which benefit from cycling. But you only need to cycle them a couple of times before measuring. And after they have been sitting (unused) for a while - you should cycle them a couple of times before using to torque a fastener. Electronic torque wrenches have no moving parts - and do not require any cycling. They have load cells; and electronics. Generally - torquing over 125% of full capacity will damage the load cell; and the wrench will need repair. Also, a load or torque should never be put onto an electronic torque wrench - which is not ON. Load on an inactive load cell can also damage it. But these have no moving parts - and although they should be tested for Calibration just like mechanical - 'cycling' has no effect.

    Intriguing set of results. Did the calibration certificate show a temperature and was it significantly different to your shop? Probably clutching at straws really! Certainly worth finding out if the wrench can be adjusted as the spread across the individual test points didn't seem too bad.

    • @Tools-Tested
      @Tools-Tested  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good point, looked at the certificate and my shop is 10 degrees Fahrenheit cooler. Yeah its interesting the 1/2 is good at the mid to top end and the 3/8 is the opposite of that. I will have to look I haven't adjusted A split beam style before, but it looks like there is two adjustments that can be made.

    Would love to see it tested, but I got it used from my snap on dealer for $100, & have no idea how many (or how few) cycles it has on it; & would probably have to send it to CDI Torque to have it re-calibrated & certified for a fair test.
