All brushed motors power tools will spark due to the direct contact. The non sparking drill Scotty used is brushless (DeWalt XR) so not the same comparison. If Scotty used a brushed motor DeWalt, it would also spark.
Usually the nice metal ones don't, because they have the better motor. Chinese or not, the quality of the drill and motor is very important. I do have a nice metal one that sparks but like you said it's the type of motor
Sparks on the back of that drill just means it's not a brushless motor. It's brushed, they do spark, and its 100% normal. They all (brushed motors) do it regardless of brand or quality.
It is normal, but the sparks are caused by carbon dust from the brush arcing out inside the drill. While it is normal, the brushes in drills like that wear out fast and need replaced. You can tell a cheaper brushed drill from a quality one from the amount of sparks inside. A quality brushed drill needs the brush replaced after 60 hours of use and makes less sparks. Brushless drills are cheap enough today that you should get them instead. Just around 1/4 more expensive than a brushed drill. Minimal wear and friction means the battery lasts longer as well.
A 20V Dewalt drill was the last thing my dad bought for me as a Christmas gift, before he passed away. That was about 7 years ago, and the original battery packs, and drill still work like the day I got it. My dad was an amazing carpenter, in the union for 30 years, and he swore by Dewalt.
I have the older version of Dewalt rechargeable tools and they didn't last. I'm guessing the 20V are way better. However I've switched to Milwaukee which I like so far.
@@fatelvis4156 same here Milwaukee so far has been amazing the old DeWalt stuff worked very well but the batteries are junk I heard they changed that with the new batteries but I didn't want to chance it
@@markusa5521 I have the old DeWalt 18v system but at the end before they switched to the 20v they produced lithium ion batteries for the last of the 18v. I haven't had any issues after 10 years. I bet it was those old nicd and nimh batteries that were junk.
Ha. When he was talking about the Honda motor pump there was someone's feet in the upper right. I imagine it was a neighbor who hear him and came over "he's doing it again."
In the drone industry, DJI drones are known to be one of the best. But you are right. Most recently, their required software updates have rendered a lot of these drones unusable - as far as I know these updates were made generally to comply with US law.
My dad was a racer, every tool in his box was either a Craftsman or Snap on. This was back when Sears was in existence and backed up their tools for life.
Snap on or Mac Tools High quality tools and they replace them for free if they break. Of course they will. You paid for that one tool three times or more over ftom your first purchase to begin with.
Craftsman was made in USA back then. Quality was about the same as Matco tools, but 1/3 of the priceThey still out there, still lifetime Lowes sells them, but its all made in China now. I’ve got a torque wrench not long ago from Craftsman (Lowes),remembering good brand name and quality, but i was wrong. Had to return it after just 3 times of use - out of calibration. Never again. Went online and ordered a nice set of 3 (1/4,3/8 and 1/2) wrenches from CDI. (Snap On brand, but way cheaper then original, made in US ). Same goes for the GearWrench. Was a good brand back then. Now it’s Thaiwan.
Sparks in a cordless power drill are made by motor brushes. Nothing wrong with that. Brushless motors don't make sparks because of their design. Its like comparing apples to oranges.
yeah industry standard for bricking old models to frustrate everyone into buying a new one. DJI is the apple of RC. They singlehandedly ruined a generations old hobby of flying models, hobby RC is currently being regulated out of existence
They are the industry standard for a little something called "planned obsolescence". They know that people buying drones generally have enough disposable income to buy a new one and they take full advantage of it.
I believe anything that requires a phone app to run is crap. It may work for you, but it won’t beat a purpose built machine. Once they stop supporting the software, the thing won’t even take off.
@@altgraymedia3655 a lot of DJI's products have apps that go along with the hardware, like their gimbals. It actually opens up a huge variety of features that wouldn't be possible anywhere near the price of the product (object tracking, focus tracking). A purpose-built model would be 5x the price, easily, so I should hope it would be better. anyways, most of their new drones have no need to use your phone at all, if you're willing to spend extra to get a controller with a built in screen.
You want the REAL low down on tools? AvE is the channel you need. He'll tell you where the tool is ACTUALLY made and he tears down the tools to its core components and evaluates it all. A must-watch channel.
Having worked professionally in mechanical manufacturing... AvE has no pro skills, he just love to destroy things to compensate. Look what happened when AvE made a device for Practical Engineering, AvE could not even interpret a standard technical drawing, he made something completely different and of course it didnt work. Swearing a lot and breaking things is fun but AvE is really very unskilled..
We sold our manufacturing soul along with much of our country's soul beginning in the 1970's for pennies on the dollar... All you can do now is watch the snowball growing as it smashes down the mountain growing larger until it hits whatever is at the bottom 🤷♂️ I hope I'm dead and gone before that day comes because it's gonna require a "hard reset" 😳

Pressure washer tip here, always start the machine with the hose open and water flowing thru the machine, also try to run enough water thru the pump and hoses to get all the air out of the system. The seal of the pump will last alot longer if they don't have to deal with the back Pressure starting up. Source-my dad who's painted for 25 years
GM garbage please. Everyone's entitled to there own opinion but. The ls engine is the most swaped and built engines ever making great hp numbers and reliable. So garbage no. Every car manufacturer makes junk models so you can't call all GM's garbage.
Make sure you don't get a pressure washer with a "wobble" pump - they fail. The second best is an "axial" pump. The BEST is a "Triplex" pump. The triplex pump is a lot more expensive but they will last a lot longer. But, proper maintenance of the pump is necessary for any of them to last. Never store a pressure washer with water in the pump.
Hmmm, how would I get the water out of an electric SunJoe pressure washer after use? I'm guilty of just unplugging it after use and sticking it the garage.
The kimo drill you used has a brushed motor and that sparks are from the contact from the brushes in the motor. The dewalt has a brushless motor, therefore the contact of the brushes is eliminated thus eliminating the sparks. Also dewalt are made in the USA with global materials (outsourced parts and components from other parts of the world I.e china)
DeWalts are still getting cheaper and metal parts are getting replaced with plastic, but having said that I still have my DeWalt brushed 20v drill and impact driver with the original battery packs, got them over 10 years ago. I can only get about 4 or 5 1/2" holes through 1/8" copper but hey, that's all I need! I'll buy new batteries when they're needed lol
Hi Scotty, I love your vids. I watch them every day. I totally agree with you about the cheap Chinese stuff. DJI has truly horrible customer service, but their drones do have horrible software updates. As an IT professional, I have “fixed” many of them from their “bricked” status. You’ve helped me on so many auto issues. Send me the stupid drone and I’ll fix it for you.
The sparking is just characteristic of a brushed motor. I have a Dewalt DW991 drill I bought around 1995 and has always done the same thing. The issue with Chinese power tools is simply overall build quality. The gear assemblies tear up due to their piss poor quality. That being said, the drill you just showed us would probably be fine, for the person who doesn't use them on a regular basis.
@@abyssaldision5134 yeah, that is disappointing, because I feel like his confidence originates from ignorance. People like Scotty should do their homework first.
I have both a Milwaukee and Harbor Freight (cheap) cordless drill. No doubt the Milwaukee is far superior but some people/jobs don't require a top quality cordless drill. I used the Harbor Freight drill (cost about $13) for my home renovation because I didn't want to abuse my good one. I used/abused it extensively for 3 years and worked flawlessly until I dropped it from a ladder onto a concrete floor. It was $13 well-spent.
Plus the seals for l hydraulic pump would be cheap Chinese seals so that would go bad quickly. I had bought a hydraulic floor jack from Costco or Price Club 30 years ago and it only lasted for a few years. Then I got a Lincoln Jack not too long afterwards and it's still good to this day. I did buy a Chinese Jack recently from Napa, the same one that's like the Daytona from China freight that's supposed to be the same as a Snap-On where they had a lawsuit over that. I had no issues with it but I don't use it a lot. It's low profile and list list a ton and a half more than my Lincoln Jack

That Kimo drill’s motor is brushed, Dewalt hammer drill has a brushless motor, the two are different tec. a brushed motor will gives sparks always due to the direct contact with carbon brushes, a brushed motor will run with a higher sound/noise db (decibels).. also it will have that smell coming out of the vents due to the friction/contact that it make with the brushes

I agree with the don’t buy knock off drill message but your right it’s just a brushed motor. I have a brushed Milwaukee that I’ve put through the ringer for years without issue
Yeah I thought that was kind of weird this guy's 50-year mechanic and he doesn't know the difference between brushed and brushless motors. All brushed motors spark that's literally how brushed motors work. Considering back in his days all they had was brush motors he should know this.
I have a Dewalt drill with the clutch I don't think I've used it ten times. but it's out of warranty and now the clutch doesn't hold. Typical hysterical ranting from Scotty. Literally shows a working drill and says the sparking mean it's on the verge of being broken. 😆 If you listened to Scotty about everything you'd be walking to work and turning screws with your fingernails. I have a vintage Skil brushed drill from the 1960s that belonged to my dad and he used it my whole life until I ended up with it. Built like a tank and it also sparked like a fireworks display, and it still worked for decades. Out of curiosity to see if I could reduce the sparking, I replaced the brushes and cleaned the commutator to restore the area that sparks back to clean condition. And guess what? It still sparks, and it still runs just fine even though it's 80 years old. BuT tEh SpArKinG mUsT MeAn iT's a cHeAp dRilLL 🤡
I bought a Hitachi cordless drill years ago. It's lightweight, powerfull, has 2 batteries, charges in only 10 or 15 minutes and lasts a long time on a charge.I've even used it to screw down metal roofing! I remember my brother bought a transister radio back in the early sixties when we were teenagers. He rarely uses it now but it still works.
I bought a Chinese made LED lamp at Home Depot but it lasted only a couple of days not a month. I should have listened to Scotty. But the problem is we can't find things that are not made in China.
Isn't that the truth. Hopefully that changes sooner than later. All CCP controlled China is North Korea on steroids. Time to start treating them as such.
For your information, Japanese car made in Mexico, they are just mostly Assembled over there. Unfortunately that’s a fact, Chinese they make some bad products and good products.
You can still buy brushed motor from DeWalt and Milwaukee but they are heavier for the same or less power. Big difference is you can rebuild a brushed motor much easier. But it's old technology.
All brushed drills will spark whether you can see it or not. The expensive high end drills are all brushless these days and they don't spark. The brushed technology is older and cheaper technology.
Sparks in a cordless power drill is not an indication of "cheaply made tools." Makita that I bought in 2008 had sparks from day one and it still works perfectly fine.

When originally manufactured it is supposed to not spark, or at least as much, as that isn't as efficient. Like I said, it really doesn't change a whole of a lot. You would need to really try some serious testing to find a difference. In the video Scotty was using a brushless DeWalt, and of course it didn't spark. All in all, I understand what you are saying, but I am just saying that originally, the don't spark as much if at all. Sorry for any confusion in my previous comments.
I think that DeWalt XR line is brushless. Scotty might not know. It's not a fair criticism. There is definitely good reason to want to eliminate sparking, but that is not really why that drill is garbage.
@@PaulStringini You'd think XR is brushless, I did at first, but its marketing ploy. XTENDED RUNTIME. Most the time the XR is brushless, but not always
Depends on the drill. HILTI makes top of the line tools. All their drills are brushed. Brushed tools typically have less power/weight ratio. BUT the motors are much more reliable, as long as you replace the brushes a good brushed drill will probably outlast you
Scotty was talking about crappy tools, I will never buy another Ryobi tool! Their batteries are crap. I spent good money last year on replacement batteries for the Ryobi units I already had. They lasted maybe 6 months, then they quit recharging. Expensive door stops or paper weights!
If your drill has sparks, it is a brushed motor. Look up how a brushed motor works. That is normal. Your drill doesn’t spark because it is brushless and there are no rubbing components in it so they last longer. Edit, still just dont buy cheap tools
i've never seen any brand of electric drill not spark, including my milwaukee, my dad's makita, my friends corded dewalt, the milwaukee i used at a previous job etc....
My impact dewalt drill, bought 2 years ago and the drill will randomly stopped spinning. Great product… had makita before switching over, those things dropped in pools, fell off houses, ran over by truck and still worked.

Times have certainly changed since 2021 when Scotty made this video. DJI is one of the top of the line drone companies out there, and Milwaukee is arguably one of the best tool companies.
Hey Scotty, I've been racing drones for 5 years now. If you send me the mavick ill fix it. But believe me you hit the nail on the head with the software. Since I started flying I've used an open source software developed by other pilots. Its amazing how much better open-source is than proprietary garbage.
All the consumer electronics relying on internet upgrades to work seem to fail after the warranty expires after updating. Same thing happened on 3 previous US branded computers. Asian brand seems better, knock on wood.
With the drills, I switched from Black and Decker to Milwaukee, and I have never been happier since. Milwaukee is a beautiful toolset, long lasting batteries and it is pleasant to work with it. I am sure Dewalt is as good.
I've worked with many contractors as a construction electrician. About 85% of them use Milwaukee and/or DeWalt 👍 sometimes you'll see a Rigid tool or something in there somewhere and some of those other brands are ok but when you have a bunch of guys using the tools all day every day and treating them like a rental, everybody knows the Red and Yella ones are what you buy.
Dewalt is owned by the same company as black and decker. Milwaukee is owned by TTI a Hong Kong company that also owns Ryobi and Ridgid. Any tools in the upper tiers should perform quite well. eg. Bosch blue, Milwalkee, Makita (upper models)...
Scotty, you never cease to crack me up. I don't know how many times my wife hears me say "I'm going to store that in the garbage where it belongs"; usually referring to Chinese junk 🤣

The fact that Scotty doesnt know the difference between brushed and brushless motors is surprising. All brushed motors spark between the brushes and stator. A brushless motor doesn't necessarily make the device intrinsically safe either. Dewalt has slipped dramatically in quality on some of their products. So has Matco, though, and I think if we follow the money we see that Stanley Black and Decker is the responsible party.
They Aren’t. As a trade worker we used to use dewalt a lot. But in recent years we switched to Milwaukee and Hilti. Dewalts quality has gone down hill fast.
Never liked De Walts I bought. Chintzy battery terminals, batteries didn't hold charge, had be kept plugged in. Clunky gear box. Pretty excited too to soon use my new cordless Skilsaw worm drive circular saw--48 volts! That'll be fun.
Scotty! I’ve had that problem with my mavic drone before. You just need reset the drone and then reconnect with the controller. Happened to me after an update too.
Yeah, his is DJI. If I'm not mistaken, they're one of the very best manufacturers of drones. If they're Chinese though, they're a brand for me to avoid.
Many law enforcement agencies use DJI including $2,500 versions of the one Scotty is holding and I've flown a $30,000 DJI drone at a law enforcement agency open house just this last week. The agencies love them. Scotty must of had just a fluke with his.
Weren’t the first mavic drones bad when they got released? They improved on the controllers and software over time and DJI is typically the first name when you think of when you want a drone
9:20 Those sparks are not Chinese problem but a characteristic of brushed motor due to brush contacts. Even my black&decker drill sparks quite some. Always remember, you get what you par for.

Scotty's automotive repair knowledge is impressive and can be very helpful. Regarding other topics, there may be some disagreements. I agree that manufacturers' greed outsourcing to China is short term gain for long term pain, but really we the consumers share the blame - we want low prices. Pretty much everything is now made in China, clothes, major bearing brands, parts and tools of all quality, major brand cell phones - you name it. When I was young, if something was of poor quality and cheap we joked that it was made in Japan, well those times certainly changed. And so with China, you just can't generalize. Brushed vs brushless DC motors has been explained in other comments. Corded vs cordless is another topic, from my experience quality battery powered tools are superior to corded AC powered tools. Generally cordless have more torque, run smoother and have more precise speed control, and ofcourse no cord. I now buy the Ridgid brand because of the lifetime warranty that also covers batteries, that is a really big thing. In my opinion brushed or brushless is no big deal if you have a lifetime warranty, if you wear out the brushes no problem, you're covered. Oh and if you replace your own brushes, you can soak unplated carbon brushes overnight in motor oil before installing, it will be absorbed and they will last much longer.
My DeWalt and Milwaukee make sparks, it's called a brushed motor and they all make sparks it called electric power.. some times I wonder about this channel
All brushed motors power tools will spark due to the direct contact. The non sparking drill Scotty used is brushless (DeWalt XR). (Borrowed text but true).
LOL yep. My DeWalt 18V drill I bought years ago does too. It was made in Mexico as well. Still works fine. Scotty needs to do some fact-checks every now and then.
I have a Dewalt 20v cordless drill + 1/4+ impact driver. Came out before the XR tools. They spark because they use brushes. All brushed motors spark - Chinese or otherwise (but then the Dewalts are made in China too now). The sparks are from the brushes passing over the commutator ring. Just the nature of the beast. And yes, it has that ozone smell too.
Most gas powered pressure washers have belt driven pumps. This setup helps the pump last longer and run cooler also less vibrations from the engine. The belt does break after a while. They make industrial pressure washers that are direct drive (gear driven) but the pumps don't last as long they run hotter and at higher RPM. Simpson is an excellent brand! 🇺🇲
No. No they don’t. I work in a small engine shop. Pressure washers are all direct drive to the pump. Same idea as a wood splitter, secured to the pump by 4 bolts and a key on the crank shaft. I’ve never once in my life even heard of a belt driven pressure washer.
@@Acaidia yea DJI is a very reputable company, not like your Sharper Imagine Walmart drones. DJI makes some VERY nice intelligent drones and are worth every penny of their cost.
It seems like scotty himself isn't the sharpest tool in the shed either. If he knew anything, he would know that that powerdrill has a brushed motor. Meaning, that it there will always be sparks because the rotor of the motor is constantly in contact with carbon brushes.
10:03 That 120v is ac. The battery drills are running DC. Also, the voltage is not an indicator of power (although a corded drill can have less limits because of the unlimited power) or durability. Brushed motors wear out faster and are less efficient all the time. The only real benefit is they're cheap. BTW your dewalt is a brushless probably since it's the xr line.
Fun fact, 15 years ago my father bought a Dewalt 220w drill, all it needed was a reshaped chuck since it worn out of extreme usage and it never failed once.

The sparks just mean the motor has brushes as opposed to brushless it's just a different type of motor
All brushed motors power tools will spark due to the direct contact. The non sparking drill Scotty used is brushless (DeWalt XR) so not the same comparison. If Scotty used a brushed motor DeWalt, it would also spark.
Yes I have a Dewalt with brushes and it sparks plenty - just as you say.
Usually the nice metal ones don't, because they have the better motor. Chinese or not, the quality of the drill and motor is very important. I do have a nice metal one that sparks but like you said it's the type of motor
You know what you say
Also his DeWalt and essentially every other power tool these days is made in China…. Even Makita and Milwaukee…
Doesnt matter how well bedded the brushes are, they will spark.....unfair to compare a brushless powertool
Minimal wear and friction means the battery lasts longer as well.

yeah industry standard for bricking old models to frustrate everyone into buying a new one.
The sparks from the drill is because it has a brushed motor in it. A good drill is brushless like Milwaukee and Dewalt.

And how in hell is a mid handle drill made so poorly balanced it nosedives into your work from a standing rest? Now have Makita brushless tools. They're Awesome.
@@RAndrewNeal they've always been Chinese.
@@DennisdeJong Hm. Well I know of another brand that is German, but I don't remember the name of the company. I know I guy who used to work for them.
Weren’t the first mavic drones bad when they got released? They improved on the controllers and software over time and DJI is typically the first name when you think of when you want a drone
Dude, that fuggin pic of the tin man dropping lube on him had me rolling. Keep that top tier meme editing going scotty!
1:57 for those that missed it. 🤣🤣🤣
9:20 Those sparks are not Chinese problem but a characteristic of brushed motor due to brush contacts. Even my black&decker drill sparks quite some. Always remember, you get what you par for.
now THIS is the rambling i like to see scotty doing. from junk chinese pressure washers to junk this and junk that grubhub here memes there. great video scotty!
I'd like to see him repair one.
Not sure if Scotty's videos are informational or comedy, but I like them either way.
the chucks plastic well there's your problem🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Both
I bought Chinese food and tried one of their fortune cookies, 3 things I noticed.
1. It was way wrong, said I'm intelligent in math, use my skills.
2. It broke immediately upon first use.
fortune cookie is not Chinese at all. In China there is no fortune cookie At all.
@@jupitergas3229: So it was a counterfeit Chinese cookie. Explains a lot. Maybe even why he only listed 2 of 3 observations [i know I'm missing the joke].
My torture cookie was blank . wtf
@@TheGoodnews1411 I'm no expert in torture cookies but you might be lucky it was blank
My fortune cookie didn’t even have a fortune inside.
My Makita doesn't make sparks and it has a brushed motor as well.
My milwaukee hole shooter drill has brushes still works after 30 years of heavy use and does not spark
@@Peter12662 that's because it's no longer brand new. The brushes are worn down and are not making contact meaning there's a lot less friction.
It’s why when China claims they are coming out with a new stealth fighter jet…. I laugh.
They stole our design, so it will probably work.
@@unclechico5981 they stole a lot of our car designs too and theirs are garbage
@@wigletron2846 No one in the right mind would steal car design from American made.
@@chm6679 lol you might want to check all the chinese fakes
'Landfill fodder!" Like our major appliances today.
The tin man picture was priceless 😂😂😂
Hey Scotty, I will gladly take that DJI drone off your hands since it is junk in your estimation. (hee hee)
Agreed! I'll take it off his hands real quick!
Yea it’s strange because I’ve never heard anyone say they’re junk before. They’re the most highly praised and well known consumer drone manufacturer.
@@Acaidia Its probably because he bought it used and there was already something wrong with it and got ripped off. DJI is a very good brand.
@@joncroney8779 Yea I've never owned a DJI but that's what I've heard.
10:03
That 120v is ac.
“Sparking” on a brushed dc drill is normal. The DeWalt is sparking too.
You are Chinese
Fun fact, 15 years ago my father bought a Dewalt 220w drill, all it needed was a reshaped chuck since it worn out of extreme usage and it never failed once.
