From what I have found so far the tekton split beam has a guaranteed accuracy of +-4%
It says 72 tooth on website.
Ya I want to say it was roughly a year after they first released this new torque wrench they changed them to 72t.

@Vet-zj5lq ya I really like it, it's very accurate, has the flex head and you can leave it at what ever setting you want unlike your typical style torque wrench. And I'm sure the upgraded 72t gear is nice as well. I was hoping they would release a new click style with a slide lock as well instead of the nut on the bottom. I haven't heard of them working on that but I hope they do
Can I use the 3/8 on lug nuts for suv and sedans?
You can for most but 1/2 would make it easier and have a wider torque range

I just picked up the Tekton 3/8 and 1/2 torque wrenches but don't you mean 72 tooth and not 32?
No when this was released the torque wrench was fairly new. The old click style was 24T and the new split beam was 32T they have since changed the gear to a 72T
20 # ft is too high for Toyota/Honda spark plugs. Darn! Otherwise it's perfect.
Which is better? Icon split beam or tekton?
Do you guys think receiving them in the mail messes with the calibration?
No
I doubt it. I checked them alongside my snapon on the truck and they were all within spec.

Just for the record I checked tektons website and they on the half inch split beam it's plus or minus 4percent or better I no he said on the 3/8 it was like 2.5 percent or something like that so just giving a little heads up on the half inch split beam but I have my icon and use it on a daily at my job where I do tires all day long
I would just buy the 1/2

Yes basically. So as long as your work doesn't require counter clockwise torque then it's a great torque wrench
I have the new 1/4 inch tekton torque wrench & a couple of other odd ball 1/2 inch torque wrenches!! Because of your video I now have to have that 3/8 split beam otherwise I won't be able sleep at night!!! GREAT VIDEO!!!!

I don’t think that the lower degree swing really means more torque. The paw probably just grabs more teeth. That’s more a factor of build quality and metal. Thanks for the video. Been kinda eyeing this thing since the email came out about them

Need to make 3/4 some of the bolts and nuts I tighten need to go above 300lb
I don’t use torque wrenches often, but I’ve only used digital. My boss/friend prefers digital because he was field artillery (USMC) and can’t hear shit. I have used it counter clock wise a few times because we didn’t know the torque specs (such as injectors) and used it to see what they were torqued at. From what I’ve heard: digital are convenient, but click type are better.
Also, I know nothing about split beams, so this was interesting. Thanks for that.
Not a big fan of the plastic handle. Looks like it would break when you use the 4 lb hammer on it. But seriously, good review, interesting wrench!

How about the biggest con of all vs other style being the exorbitant cost?
I have a 3/8" split beam from Precision Instruments. I love it. If I didn't already have the Icon 1/2" for wheels, I'd jump on a split beam 1/2". No going back once you have used one.

Thank you for another Great Video. Personally, I have never owned a torque wrench, there usually supplied by the company I'm working for. So any calibration issues would be handled by the company. So how do you handle that yourself, how much does that cost? Again thank you and Happy New Year's to you and your family.
Thank you. Ya my last job did the same thing. When they had issues we would send them back to the company for recalibration. But it differs. Not all companies will recalibrate them. Sometimes they need sent to certain shops that actually calibrate tools and equipment. Usually costs 25 to 50 but can get more expensive for larger torque wrenches.
How about answering his question. Does Tekton recalibrate its torque wrenches and if so at what cost?
@@jimjohnson9813 how about you learn manners and ask them yourself. Each calibration card states the percentage it will fall in after so many clicks. Clearly I haven't had this torque wrench long enough to need it calibrated. Otherwise I would have answered the question. Plus I did answer what I could by stating the average cost for a recalibration.

Yeah tuff decision, if they made them when I bought my split beam I would have been torn as well. They both look good and should do well.
I'm not a fan of split beam. When you flip the lever back if you're not careful it'll change your torque value. I think we were really hoping for a pull-down collar style torque wrench like a Kobalt or Icon
It shouldn’t. I haven’t experienced that with my Snap On which I’ve had for years or my Icon which I bought for home use. If it’s moving on you just because of the locking tab it’s a defect and you can probably warranty it for that.
@@asmautollc I am very happy with my Snap-on 1/2” split beam. However I take the “time” to make adjustments accurately. So many people are always looking for excuses for failure and then wondering why everything is bad. “If you’re not careful”… ? Really? So be careful! Are you trying to do good and accurate work? Pay attention, Be careful. Why is being careful and paying attention to details a big deal or a bad thing? Probably an airline mechanic…
My 3/8 tekton torque wrench internals came apart when I flipped the lever back. Sent them an email and got a replacement in a couple days.

Split beams are god tier of torque wrenches. Turn a little dial instead of that nut or ring and leave it at any setting without worrying about damaging it? And no batteries?? Sign me up!

Looks like my“precision instruments” one I bought a couple of years ago, I use it mostly for lug nuts & occasionally for a crank pulley bolt

@@TonyTheTechnician yep and Precision Instruments actually invented the split beam. That’s why they made them for Snap On even after Snap On bought CDI. Precision Instruments started selling direct to customers under their own name when their patent ran out and Snap On had CDI take over manufacture of theirs.

Why one of this type vs a DTA or digital torque wrench?
@@brianmack6285 because digital requires batteries and also tends to be a lot more expensive for a torque wrench of the same quality. Also digital beeps when you hit your torque but doesn’t stop you from overtorquing. Which makes split beam great for things like lug nuts in a professional environment whereas digital is great for precision work and angle (assuming the digital has angle).

You think this company has these new offerings down to spec? I needed a 50-250 for the crank bolt on a LS so I went with the husky that was $50 and military discount. I wanted the original tekton for the warranty and good price but they raised the prices before I could purchase and the husky sale just pushed me into that brand. Hope Home Depot stands behind the torque wrench for lifetime warranty. Didn’t see torque wrench caveat
