I Bought a 1987 Buick Grand National for HALF PRICE with Hidden Issues!

- It's not everyday someone offers me a Buick Grand National for 50% off the average sales price with paint that looks better than showroom new! I bought this sight unseen and found out it has some pretty crazy issues. It was stolen in 1997, the tires rub the fenders, and it's running very badly. Can we fix this for cheap or did I make a really bad decision?

Was that sparks at min 41 from the plug wires?
I’ll be… Yes those are big lightning ⚡️ bolts shooting out!! Thank you!
That explains it running rough
@manefreshh22mix. Woww great eye. You might have just fixed one of the issues. Well done 👍 😊
I saw what you saw if you zoom in on the video you can tell its just some debris hanging, at first it did look like some spark flying everywhere but it's way to big to be that
That looks like a piece of debris blowing around.
You now have a monte ss, and a grand national. I think its safe to say you've found the automotive G spot lol
😂 epic comment!!
@@AutoAuctionRebuilds Hey, I commented below, but ill comment here. I'll send you an email, but I have 4 wheels for this car. I bought a wrecked one in????? 2005???? And I took the wheels and tires off of the car. Most of the parts have been sold, but I know I still have the wheels buried. I have an 87 GNX... And your issues are not that major, ill email you or Instagram message you.
@markpease9575 Agreed. He needs to complete the trifecta. No. Quadfecta there was also a Pontiac GrandPrix particularly the aero-back version
now he needs to add the 83-84 hurst/olds cutlass to finish it off
He needs the Smokey n Bandit Trans am before hitting the G spot and the Hurst Cutty like the comment before me said
Randy, I'm an old school GM tech. I can tell you that design of MAF was used on a lot of the GM SFI engines back in that day. The interesting thing was, the C3I distributorless ignition system was prone to popping back through the intake during cranking on occasion. It normally happened when you just didn't hold the key QUITE long enough for the engine to catch, and it would pop back through the intake. Trouble is, that particular MAF would get blown the hell apart nearly every time it did it. I replaced COUNTLESS MAF's on these, 88 Royales, 98 Regencys, Rivieras, Bonnevilles, you name it.......pretty much all the GM cars that had the early C3I system, with this design of MAF.
Guaranteed, you have a bad MAF, and the intake pipe situation is trash - fix these two items, and that car will probably shock the hell out of you.
Hey. I have a question for you. When you say that the C3I distributorless ignition system "was" prone to popping back through the intake, breaking the MAF in the process. How did the engineers remedy that? Was it ever improved upon? Is it something I'd have to be wary of when I'm looking for a GN myself?
Sorry if it's a dumb question, I'm familiar with SBCs and the GN v6 is a different beast that I'm not familiar with though it's my dreamcar.
The horsepower numbers were underrated for insurance prices back then. Quit a bit above the factory numbers. If it has an aftermarket boost controller it most likely isn’t stock. From those that I’ve known who have/had Grand Nationals they don’t really like anything less than 93 octane. Those tires are meant to keep you from spinning in order to plant all the power on the ground so they are the better option. Guarantee when it’s running 100% right it will still spin them if you really want it to.
I thought it was because they didn't want anything to be faster than the Corvette on paper...Didn't they do the same for the Turbo Trans Am ?
@@Legend_1754 you are correct in also saying they didn’t want it beating the corvettes on paper however they knew everyone would figure it out soon enough. They underrated several cars back then for insurance purposes. There were cars in the 60’s and 70’s that produced over 400 on the dyno but the manufacturers would rate them in the 300 range. For one reason they knew they would be buying the cars as well and didn’t want to pay the higher insurance costs as well as not scaring potential customers away with the higher coverage prices.
They did it with any GM that even came close to the Corvette. @@Legend_1754
It is your car, your money. Do what you want with your car and ignore the negative, sad people.
Even with all of its faults, I still love that Grand National Randy!
I think that one fix you mentioned using a LS1 maf sensor is the way to go.
At least you can get replacements for them.
I can't wait to see all the fixes on this one.
Those replacement ties and wheels you put on don't look that bad for now. They will work.
Running around on tires that scrape and rub all the time sucks. Ask me how I know.
When those other 15x7's become available, you will get the G.N back to what it should look like.
Great buy Man!
Thank you.
Been Waiting on this one. My friend had a Buick T Type similar to the GN
Love the t-type!
I have a 2004 Buick Park Avenue Ultra Supercharged Series III and my engine did that and I had to get a New OEM fuel pump and Fuel Filter and use no ethanol gas as these older cars were not made for it.
Congrats Randy 🚘👏👏🤘. My old man had a T type back in the day🎬👍.Salute 😎
I love the T type!
Hey Randy, Alex @ Legit Street Cars bought a Grand National with the same engine issues and wheel and tire issues. He has several videos on what he did to fix it all. This might save you some time in diagnosing the problems. Nice car. Watch all your videos.
He rebuild his motor and everything Dunno if randy would do the same
I have a buick regal grand national, yes this the correct name.if you put as little as 2000 dollars will blow your mind.with a cat delete down pipe exaust, chip and col air intake it will run low 12 seconds quarters mile.
I need help with this 😂
Be careful driving the car without the MAF Sensor not being plug up. The car could be running lean while in boost which is dangerous for a boosted car. The fix for most of those cars to get rid of the MAF and go aftermarket ecu to run only a map sensor which is built into the ecu and make the car go from a MAF base car to a Speed density car which can run only a map sensor. That is big money to do all that work tho and you have to find a tuner.
I would loose all the after market junk like that nasty boost gauge . That entire air intake system is wrong. That clamp is a no hub plumbing clamp for a drain pipe. The car itself is in amazingly good condition I would search for the original air intake. Great find Randy ! I absolutely love the t tops .
Damn Jennifer, you do know something about automobiles. I was reading this and my jaw dropped by what you wrote. My daughter is the same way. She owns a Honda Civic and I caught her one morning changing out the CV joints. She never even told me they were bad. She just took care of the problem herself. It ran great after. However she had me retorque everything after a few day's past because she noticed it felt loose. She could not get the strength to tighten certain things. That's when I shared a little secret about something called a cheater bar. Surprised that she is so smart to take on CV joints but didn't realize you can use a torque wrench or cheater bar to tighten all the bolts.
@@markratony7630 Thank you for your compliment 💕
Great find Randy and WOW it looks pretty damn clean as well as being all there! Seems like price wise you bought it mucho bueno. 😊
Love the videos Randy! This is a great looking Buick and I bet you will love it. Keep up the great stuff and can't wait for whatever you got next!👍👍
Thanks!
Hey Randy, If I remember correctly....I think Alex at Legit Street Cars purchased after market wheels for his Grand National.
Looks great Randy! Those wheels look like you put the race track wheels on it. Lol! And yes, everyone would love to own one of these, me included. Still love my 87 Mustang I bought instead of it, but it is one of my favorite cars from the 80's. Hopefully you can get it running right soon.
Hey I love an 87 Mustang too! Great car.
Another great car that has been through too many of the wrong hands until now. It's now entering it's second life.
Mann honestly i think u should look in California for grand national for 24k I think u would have found a seriously solid example..but imma ride along ..your channel is awesome 😊
We do really want this Buick Grand National and the Monte Carlo SS be part of the power tour 2024 cause that would be so cool looking forward for it! Your fan from the Philippines!
3:05 All turbo Regals had A/C. And 3:46 355lbf.-ft at 2000 RPM. The only difference 86-87 was the EEPROM, which kept boost at 15psi vs. dialing it back to 13psi after a few seconds at WOT.
Looks great. I had a 1987 Buick t-type metallic blue with the limited slip differential. It was a fast and nice car up until it was stolen and burned 7 years later.
Aww that sucks 😢. That is a shittiy way fir such a car to go out. I feel bad for you😮
That's not the world famous brown jacket. That looks like an upgrade to me 🤔
Beautiful car mint condition congrats randy
Thanks 👍
Keep up with the great videos mate. 👍 Mike from Scotland
Thanks 👍
Hi Randy! Try typing in "aluminum wheels for 87 Buick GNX" instead of Grand National. I found a bunch of them. I saw Classic Industries and avoided them. Please note: those wheels come in 15 x 7 and 15 x 8, with the 8s on the back.
from what ive seen, the only option car is missing on inside is electronic touch climate control. and under the hood, looks mostly all stock, but you have a adjustable wastegate for the boost. be careful if you still run the stock fuel pump and its not "hot wired". usually most people run their own 12 gauge hot wire back to fuel pump as stock wiring doesnt deliver much power to it. this is almost a must to do when upgrading fuel pumps . also, the flex tubes connected the turbo to maf, most replace with either a polished metal tube or chrome tube intake. good luck and have fun with it, she looks nice!,, also, your brake light is mostly the "acummulator bulb" that is stuck on the side of the power master. this is most always the source of brake light. if thats not it, the pressure switch. and as a bonus, theres an idiot light on the right hand side thats not used, doesnt even have a bulb behind it its about halfway down the plastic panel that reads "power injection" , well i put a bulb behind it, and hooked it up to a boost switch that would turn it on at boost. yes this was a factory warning light that was never used on the gn, as GM was planning to put a water injection system on it to spray water into the intake upon boost. if you take off the dash and shine a light on the right side warning light panel you will see the power injection label :)
Electronic A/C was not an option on the 1987 model Regal cars. The rest of your information is correct.
It says premium fuel on the dash. Great car.
Hey Randy there are two gn wheels on market place in pa for $150.
If anyone can get out the gremlins, it's Randy.
I would seriously be scrathing my head if I did the right thing buying this thing 🤦♂️
You and I are not the same then 😂
@@AutoAuctionRebuilds nope I'm from Europe so grew up with different cars.
Too each their own but really don't understand the whole GN hype 🤷♂️
But..goodluck with it
Will be watching the vids none the less.
I hope your having a great weekend randy love your cars they are so cool ❤
Thanks! You too!
I would enjoy a bunch of repair videos its about to turn into winter in upstate ny 😅😂
Somebody is going to get buried!😂😂😂.
Needs fresh fuel in it and a new fuel filter. Also the B-12 Chemtool treatment as well.
Classic Industries makes a 15x8 aluminum repop of those wheels and it shows that Goodmark has them in stock
Sorry. I got that backwards. Goodmark makes the wheel, Classic Industries has them in stock. 😂
I don’t want the 15x8 I want 15x7
If you can sort it, you should make out well when you sell it on, which I recommend you do. Maybe do Barrett Jackson or Mecum? It'd be great content for certain. It's hella cool, but it's a collector car & you are not a collector. IMO a 2000's corvette swapped G body would be way more practical & fun to live with(fun=faster) & talk about a content goldmine build!
Agree
Please LS Swap that Monte Carlo and use it for a power tour rather than the Grand National but if you get GN all fixed up it would be a worthwhile investment to keep
No LS is coming to the Monte. It’s going to be a 383.
ANS was a performance garage here west of Chicago. It specialized in GN's, Syclones, Typhoons and Turbo Trans Ams. Since it has the boost controller on it, it also most likely has a chip too. No telling what grade fuel you might need to make it run as is.
Yes Randy I think that you will get it done and running very good I think that you should get all of the markings that need to be on the Grand National and put them back on it and you will have a very ausom car when it is done Charlie kretschmar Phoenix Arizona
love love love the GN and the SS just need another Marauder to complete the trio
Congratulations Randy! I love it!
Thanks so much!
@autoactionrebuilds Try to disconnect the MAF sensor & see if it runs better. The fuel sock on the pump may be collapsed which could be causing a restriction.
Will do man thank you.
That car is amazing wheels are 🔥
This is an awesome car! The cutting out is the mass airflow sensor and theres also probably a boost leak somewhere
@autoauctionrebuilds The driver’s side header could have cracks (very common) and the coil pack could be causing it to break up.
Try get in touch with Vice Grip Garage or maybe Junkyard Digs maybe one of them might know where to find the mass air flow for you that wont cost you a arm and a leg
Check to see if the mass air flow arrow is facing the right direction
This happens in Pennsylvania all the time on mileage when doing a title transfer. People guess on the mileage and the state will immediately brand the title TMU or "odometer discrepancy" and this can be corrected if you can show proof of mileage but most vehicle older than 10 model years are just miles "exempt" in Pennsylvania because people are lazy and don't care about the miles listed on the title.
Some blacked out NASCAR style wheels would look sick on the Grand national
Wow, you just brought back some great memories with that Grand National. How nostalgic!!! I love that car. I dont mind the new rims at all. To me they fit the Era of the 80s. I look forward to seeing more on this car. Love your videos always
I love it, it is so clean like holy crap
You’re going to love this one Randy way to go !!!!!!
I’ll love it or hate it 😂
Love these cars
This street car has literally starred in one of The Fast and Furious movies, so it’s iconically noticeable to call a race car for drag duels🏁🇺🇸🔥 My brother does these types of old school cars well
My first car was an 87 Regal. I'd love to find one to fix up. I'm not looking for a grand national or a show car. I'll probably catch hell for this, but I'd probably v8 swap it and update the suspension a bit, but it would be my car so it would be my choice.
Hello Randy I love that Grand National we will get it running very good
There has to be a Grand National GURU!!! You need to make contact and pick their brain! I would not want to own such a car! But thats why they make different style and performance cars!!
Might be the idle air Control valve And check coil pack. Try to use all AC Delco products.
Mass airflow is the problem I would consider the used 400 one
There actually was a GM TSB in the late ‘80’s to disconnect the MAF on some cars and run without.
How can you run without a MAF?
They found that if the engine had a MAP sensor that with the fuel maps in the computer the MAF wasn’t needed. It ran by (SD) Speed Density instead.
That GN is a sweet ride hope you hang on to it . Oh ,and you’re right , I remember guys putting those new wheels like yours on back then. They look sharp!
Buy a pet cat
Great find Randy! So excited what your going to do this GNX!!
It’s not a GNX
Those new wheels do look awesome I also like the originals but new ones pop.
That thing is delicious 😋 😍. I would love to have one of these cars.
The comfort of the drive makes way more sense than the originals . being that the rears look ridiculous . The ones that you ordered my look better ? Once we see them you will know what your viewers think . Screw them ! Its your car ! O what works for you ! I would prefer a luxury ride without pounding from air shocks busting your butt and teeth !
Randy this cars looks good also with the black wheels just like f&f
Loving the G Body collection, Randy!
I appreciate it.
I had a 82 regal I pulled the wimpy 6. Cylinder and put in a built 70 455 olds engine in it. Passed anything but a gas station. Dynoed 538 hp and 673 lbs torque at the wheels. Fun to drive Bought the car in 89 from terry Staffords used cars in Pensacola fl Hopped it up a few months after purchase.
The grand national is a great car for what you paid , the custom rear wheels are nice but if they are rubbing like you said you can just change them back to stock or aftermarket . Those wider ones will sell quick . I agree the air shocks got to go. A little work and you got a gem . Great purchase
just beacuse it runs better with MAF unplugged does NOT mean it has a bad MAF🤣🤣 jesus, thaught you’d know better.
And check engine light was because YOU unplugged the MAF…
and also, every time something runs bad you suspect bad gas….and it never is.
I’ve just sorted this problem on my Saab 93 turbo with smoke machine it was map sensor and a crack in throttle body crack found by smoke test.
With some work Randy she’ll be a great GN! Glad you picked it up! Yes it seems like it’s the mass air!
She's a keeper.... very nice condition Grand National. 😊
Thank you.
Thank you for replacing the wheels and tires... the oversized tires it came with (along with the necessary 110 lb of air to maintain them on the rear!) was just idiotic! Reminds me some of the morons of the 70's :) ... They would have destroyed the suspension eventually.
Wesssss ..that last test drive gave me chills omg reminds me of the days of YORR
That was an outstanding choice of automobile
It needs 36 lbs of air pressure in the front tires to make it run properly. I guarantee it. I love your videos. They're like the mechanics version of 'Shreds'.
That GN is absolutely timeless, great buy! Greetings from Spain.
Thank you
I love the wheel depth but yeah you're kind of screwed when it comes to having fun. They made it look kind of goofy With the Mickey Thompsons
@@22099dscottwasn't aware of that, thanks!
Ive had my 87 gn now since 1993 and let me tell you these cars are very different than everthing else and tuning is a challenge without a scanmaster to tellYou whats going on with all the various sensors. That intake plumbing mess and maf will cause major problens and needs immediate correction. I run the ls maf which is cheap and plentiful at the pick a part and a translator. The power disaster is an accident waiting to happen get rid of it for a vacuum system from a regal (cheap)or hydroboost ($$) either will get the job done. Once you iron out those problems and the wheel tire problems you should have a much more enjoyable street car. Good luck
The pipe connecting the turbo compressor with the MFS should be present
tight. It is present in European cars
very solid, especially in European cars
there is a special mesh that protects the measuring "hot wire" in the MFS.
(this "wire" is very delicate). Moreover, you can see how dirty it is
"Venturi nozzle" (it must be clean there), the task of the air filter.
I think the computer is having difficulty selecting the fuel dose
by failure to determine the correct amount of air sucked in by the engine.
There is also a "left air" option further into the intake system, as you mentioned.
Sorry for any mistakes, I'm writing using a translator
Please Please Please keep that grand national for a while randy
RANDY..... WATCH LEGIT STREET CAR...he had fuel issues on his and shows how he fixed the issue.. oh never mind u already mentioned it hahahah
I only see one cosmetic thing wrong. That awful steering wheel cover.
lol agreed!
Love the new look great video
When you get a scanmaster or a scanmaster G it will make it easy to diagnosis. The scanmaster G can connect to your phone via Bluetooth if you purchase the app. I think it was 20 bucks for the app.
Wow that buick is sick !!! Makes that carlo looks a lesser ride… u Rock Dude ☝🏽
I absolutely love the Grand Nationals. I follow all the Mecum and Barrett Jackson actions and I think you got a pretty decent deal. Great video and looking forward to seeing all the progress.
I too own a 87 t top car. Actually the reason they governed the car was that the tires were only speed rated at 124 miles an hour. There are plenty modified grandnational and turbo regals that go faster than the governed speed with no issues.
with the vin missing are you sure it is actually a grand national and not a clone that someone made. i hope not it is a great car.
The 3 plug on the passenger side is for a analog dash if it came equipped with one. They had it wired for both.
And the red and green wires are for a aftermarket power antenna that isn't hooked up.
Thank you for the info sir!
That's not the correct maf for that car. That's a replacement they don't run well on these cars. I think that's for a fbody . The original has the plug that goes straight down not to the side. Put a maf translator on it. And the ls1 maf is the same part number for a 99-2005 buick century with a 3100 engine.
I have 2 of these cars.
A true movie! I’m so excited for the G body series! Keep it up randy!
Hope you enjoy it!
@@AutoAuctionRebuilds I did! Thanks for always being awesome and nice on Instagram!!!!
Yes those wheel for Monte Carlo not Grand national
My neighbor had a 1983 or 84 GN I was about 18 or 19 just out of HS I had just gotten my Cutlass at that time. Drooled over that car.
I need a cutlass in my life
@AutoAuctionRebuilds Yes. I need to send u pics of it. Show car for awhile.
Those wheels are a no go for me, they belong on a trailer not a Grand national or the monte, but thats just me. I would look for a set of black lace trans am wheels instead of the America racing wheels.
Randy, I would suggest using flex seal on your mass air flow for the Buick GN to seal the crack.
Wow Québec love M.T.L love 😮😅
My friend's dad bought him one of these cars many years ago and he drove it for 5 years and then sold it for $4,000 more than he paid for it and he said it was the worst mistake he ever made letting such a cool car go.
don't fret of it, Ryan u got a really nice car ... the guy did what we all did at the time, not knowing it would be a collector. The temporary centerlines don't look bad at all btw, most of those problems seem mechanical. I can't wait to see what u do next to it. maybe u should start a second channel with the restoration and auctions on the other if ppl complain..just a thought.
I had the pleasure of driving one of these years ago. It was so much fun..fast lol! Very nice car Randy.
Good choice getting right size tires and wheels.
