G'afternoon Randy 🤓 .. Ha ha, you know why the Cutlass kept cutting out and dying like that Randy 😋 . Shortly after OBD2 came out the ECM in the GM vehicles monitor battery temperature voltage and charge rate which controls the voltage regulator. If the battery is stone cold dead like that when you do get it started it'll run off the alternator but it'll cut out and die like that sometimes even if your foot is on the gas. When you put a hot battery in it sometimes it'll come around right away and sometimes it'll take a little while but eventually the sensors will come back online for the charging system and the voltage regulator will know what to do and it'll straighten itself out and start running right 🙃 ..

Parents owned a 1994 Pontiac Bonneville SSEi and for the time it was a really nice family sedan that could move. That 3800 V6 was bullet proof, however the supercharger GM put on it wasn't.
My first car was a 1989 Pontiac 6000STE AWD. When I was looking at cars, it was between that, a 1990 Buick Regal GS coupe (was going to buy this but the odometer didn't work) and a 1989 Olds Toronado Trofeo.

Like this one, they look cool. They were super comfortable cruisers. They got decent gas mileage.
    What's not to like?
This one would be worthy of fixing that deleted A/C for sure. Maybe a tank of fresh gas.

Drove it everyday and everywhere until 140k in 2014. Crazy how they used to be on the roads everywhere but today i couldn’t tell you the last time i even saw one in person. My dad was a mechanic for 44 years. The only car he never could fix was a red 91 Cutlass Supreme sedan. Whatever electrical gremlin it had that would cause the engine to just shut off just refused to go away. He rebuilt the engine, redid the injectors, and then changed the entire electrical system - new ECU, new battery, alternator, AC compressor and condenser, he even bought a new wiring harness and rewired the entire thing. Still died at random times. Spent 10x easily on parts for this stupid thing so he could say he fixed it. Like it was his white whale.
    Good luck with this one.

Dad’s fix back in the day was a couple bottles of the then new Techron in the tank, and for us to take it out on the highway and basically run the $&@! out of it like it never usually saw. Fixed it right up! 😁

WIth that 2004 Volvo S60 that I've mentioned before, there was a time when the battery was beginning to go out and it caused many issues to begin happening on it, after the battery was changed, it worked perfectly. I also had to change the battery on my 2016 Subaru Legacy because it was causing things to happen and after I changed the battery in that as well, it worked perfectly.

A child of the 60s, the Oldsmobile name and Cutlass model has a totally different connotation for this old dude than the car you're dealing with. I think Cutlass, and I visualized a 443 cu. in engine, when flooring the accelerator at 45 miles per hour the rear tires are smoking, burning rubber, screaming until I back off of the gas. That said: Okay, sonny. Whatcha got here? What are we looking at? Cutlass! You don't say.

The funk in the fuel filler pocket can occur quite quickly in Seattle due to that climate... Also, it is generally mild in temperatures there, which may be why the A/C was bypassed... I have had a couple of these in Buick, which we enjoyed a lot... While you may have paid too much due to the shipping, two grand for a car like that is not bad, considering the condition and mileage... It will be interesting watching you get her shined up... That chrome piece is supposed to be lodged in the window seal... There is a blade with an angle on it which holds it on... There is a connector clip piece missing in the middle... Yes, I would drive a car like that, as they get good fuel milage...

I love these cars. I used to buy a car every year or two and the Cutlass Supreme was my favorite. Mine was a '93 or '94. It did everything I needed it to do even in Canadian winter. In this crazy time any car this nice that drives is around $6000 where I live. I bought mine for $300 and drove it home. A year or two before pandemic. Then I let my family convince me that I needed a new car from a dealership and the Cutlass Supreme was sent to the scrapyard. I will always regret that decision.

Hi Randy. Great buy. I love All your vehicles. Old and new, good or bad. None of these vehicles are available in South Africa. One will have to import them, and that is not cheap.😢. Great video. Many thanks 😊

I have a 97 lumina with the 3.1 yes still have since 2005 added 2 used engines and finally 1 brand new one from the dealer it has about 25k Miles on the engine right now. Replaced so many engines because the head gaskets would go out and i was and still am way too attached to it. It was my first car that i paid for. The issue with the head gasket was that the new dexcool coolant mix was not compatible with this engines gaskets. After 1 head gasket repair 2 burned overheated engines and finally one brand new engine I found out that switching it to that good old green coolant was the trick. Haven't had issues since 2013 when I put the new engine. Been solid since

I've liked all ur cars that you have gotten. I was born in 81 so your cars are right up my alley. I'd love to see an old school square body chevy on your channel if you haven't already. I've been trying to go back to past videos and watch all of them

Part it out. They should have given you a kiss first. The 3.1 liter is under powered. The reason i sold my 88 international edition which i loved but it was so under powered. It was the first nice car i ever bought. My wife bought a brand new Subaru legacy which i tried to talk her out of. I wanted her to get the Regal. I was following her home and i pulled up to the light goofing around and that Subaru smoked me. It was tough for my 22 yr old ego. I traded it a couple months later.

Can’t wait for this mid 90s GM cars series. Just bought a 1996 Monte Carlo with 81000 miles that’s been sitting for 2 years. Planning on going to school on you.

Edit: or maybe like someone else noted, it was just a weak battery
Could be a bad crank/cam position sensor, which means the computer doesn't know how fast the engine is turning, so it dies at low speed.

It's sad I had a '94 Cutlass Supreme that literally looked identical to this that would've had basically every part you needed to make this car perfect. Unfortunately it was hauled away because water was leaking into every orifice of the interior and it became a petri dish for every type of mold you could imagine

Hey Randy. I wonder if the stalling was related to the aftermarket security system on the car and replacing the battery reset it? Also that zone sticker on the back is probably a street parking permit for a neighborhood in Seattle. This was probably a city car, thus the low miles while being a little bit beat up. Regardless great car, love these old GM’s.

The battery was so low the factory IAC and TPS parameters were dropped from the memory on the ECM. That's why the idle parameters came back on line with the new battery installed.

OMG, that was my first car, only mine was red and a 1996. she had over 260,000 miles on her. She sat in the yard for ten years, we put a new battery in her, new tires, brakes and she ran like a champ until she dropped a cylinder and it just wasn't financially reasonable to get a new motor in her

sometimes the car just needs to relearn its idle. had a similar issue with a toyota once. battery cooked, wouldnt stay running, put a new battery and terminals in it, it would fire and then shut down immediately, unless holding throttle. but after a couple hours it ended up running fine just like this.

21:30 got you Randy man, you already know about legit street cars, ye Alex aught a nice blue one on his channel seems you had better mechanical one when you changed that battery I had a feeling that it might of had a better chance of idling I honestly did it’s like it wasn’t getting enough current through it but ran bc absolutely nice on getting that current up by revving it higher nice man! 👌👌👍👍👍

I told you to get a supply of walmart or a local suppliers batteries and keep on hand it only takes 4 or 5 different batteries to replace most batteries in cars. It is so easy to replace the battery after you decide itt is weak or dead. than it is to drive a bunch of miles to get one each time. If the car is going to be used or sold it needs a reliable battery . Just as important as all the tires and wheels you buy is the battery.. Also when I was in the car business buying and selling dozens of cars , I detailed all of my cars myself . Maybe not as good as the detail shop you pay lots of money to, but they looked pretty good. I also recolored carpets, some seats and door panels. which makes you hundreds of dollars on certain cars. I changed cars over from r12 to 134a very easily and cheaply. You do a lot of the things that I did to bring cars back to life, which is a gift and a great talent. You are great at diagnosing problems which make you great at making content for your channel .I think if you could redo the looks of some of the interiors , and show a before and after cleaning and coloring it would be helpful to some of these new car guys. the same with detailing the outside. I enjoyed doing all the same things you do to bring them back. Now you need to sell the best ones to the public and make some retail money.

Common problem with these years any make. The battery has enough juice to start it, but not enough power to run the electronics. I worked at a used car lot during these years, and it was a constant issue. People would look at the car, play with the lights, radio, etc, etc, but then not run it enough to charge the battery back up. A few days of this, the car would have the idle issue you had until the battery was charged or replaced.
