Even though the new Sony 1000XM4’s are a great pair of ANC headphones… they still aren’t perfect and they’re not going to be able to please everyone… but thats okay cause one device will never be able to do that. But nonetheless today we’re going to compare the Sony 1000XM4’s both the Sennheiser PXC 550-II’s and the Sennheiser Momentum 3’s. Cause whether youre looking for better sound, better fit, or better build… you’ll might be interested in one of these.

Thanks for making this video. My brother has been trying to convince me to get thr Sony xm4's. But I've been a senheiser snob for years now. Thanks to my best friend. And when I saw the momentum 3's on sale for 230, I had to look up comparisons to see what would be best to aim for. And this video confirmed for me. To grab the Momentum 3's. I'm a bass addict, and I use my headphones at home 99% of the time. Almost never go out with headphones on. Plus, the battery life doesnt affect me as much. Since I'm typically a "wired type" anyway. This video helped my decision a lot, and I hope to see more videos like this in the future.

The ANC is less stellar than the second version, but there is one none the less. What's really drawing me towards the Momentums is the fact that they are so versatile. I can use them wirelessly, with the 3,5mm audio cable (bad idea to plug it straight into your PC or phone as it has an impedance of 100 Ohms, which is obviously a bit too much to hear their full potential when plugged straight into the source) and USB-C which is especially useful. Obviously, like the PXC, it also sounds objectively better than the other mainstream competitors and they used materials that aren't just renamed types of plastic.
Though to be fair, even the all plastic Sennheisers hold up very well.
(Apparently you can also turn them off by holding one of the buttons and use them passively with the audio cable to bypass the electronics inside of it which supposedly makes them sound a lot more neutral and neutralizes that big hump in the bass area)

I'm still curious about the wireless Sennheisers. I just left my 1000XM4s for Bang & Olufsen H9 3rd Gen and I absolutely love them. I wanted to trade better sound quality and wasn't as interested in the Sony top class ANC. But the H9s are just as good IMO. Some outside sounds are even quieter some slightly less. But the sound quality is a substantial improvement. Much better separation and wider soundstage. Highs are more crisp but somehow less shrill/sibilant. Bass is smoother and deeper. I wasn't a fan of the more mid-bass boom on the Sony's. H9s are more like a soft home theater subwoofer than a 00s iPod speaker like the Sony's had. Gestures also work more consistently.

Got my XM4 a few days ago and I must say he's quite right, but it really depends on the music you are listening to and your preferences.
I listen to rock/metal and even if the XM4 is great I should probably have taken the Momentum 3 instead regarding purely sound and design. The XM4 is maybe more for electronic/techno/bassy music and watching TV/movies, and I really understand why the mainstream TH-camrs like it so much. You can really feel the bass.
Out of the box the XM4 sounded not so good compared to my Sennheiser HDR180 (home wireless headphone open back). It couldn't keep up with the speed and clarity on some fast metal songs, especially in the mids. However after spending 2h to find the right EQ and settings, comparing the 2 headphones over and over, the XM4 now sounds noticeably better than at the beginning, definitely more powerful than my HDR180 but a little less precise though (open back vs close back). Like if it needed some break-in time of a few hours like leather shoes. So don't hesitate to take the time to tune it and try it for multiple hours before making an opinion.
Overall there are other good advantages to the XM4 over the Momentum 3 depending on your use case. It's lighter, smaller and more practical. The EQ of the app is better, and that's important. The touch controls also have their advantages because on my previous headphones i was too often pressing the wrong buttons, while here you can't fail the gesture.
Regarding the codecs, to be honest for the common people SBC, AAC or LDAC 990kbps doesn't make a big difference. I tested all formats. With a FLAC file if I pay attention I hear that the song is somehow cleaner in LDAC 990kbps, but with a MP3 at 320kbps or a TH-cam music video there's practically no difference. The AAC may be a tiny bit better than SBC on my Galaxy S10, but on my laptop the SBC delivers surprisingly well, maybe even better. Connecting it with a wire to my DAC was the overall best by only a little margin. The sound signature is having a much bigger impact than the Resolution, at least for the 99% of people who are not trained audiophiles. Also Because LDAC or AptX require too much bandwidth you can only connect to multiple devices through AAC or SBC (or both), so that's a bummer but for my use case there's not really an impact.
To note that I could keep a clean connection between the XM4 and the Galaxy S10 with LDAC 990kbps (forced) at the other side of my apartment through 2 rooms, better than my HDR180. That was surprising compared to some testers observations.
DSEE Extreme makes a small difference, noticeable, but small.
I also previously had the Bose QC35 (one) and with the XM4 the improvement for me is noticeable because the Bose signature is rather for warm/calm music. It couldn't keep up with metal songs.
I think the big limitations for the sound are really now coming from the Bluetooth bandwidth. Not being able to have multi-device support for LDAC or AptX is the perfect example. So I understand why Sony is implementing this DSEE AI for improving the music resolution directly in the headphone rather than including AptX. Looking at the Airpods Max it seems that Apple is following the same path.

I have the exact Bose headphones, do you recommend upgrading to the xm4’s?

    • @cw7886
      @cw7886 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@asieltrejo7926 Depends the music you like. If you're more a Jazz music guy, warm singers/music, light pop, and if you like the comfort of the bose QC35 don't upgrade. If you like strong bass, or aggressive music with highs/mids/lows you can consider upgrading as the XM4 equalizer offers really a wider range of options that the QC35 doesn't have (remember to tune with the EQ to your preference because out of the box it's meeehhh). Consider also the Sennheiser Momemtum 3 which has also strong advantages over the QC35 for a larger panel of music. If you're not sure I would strongly recommend to tryout in a shop, or order both knowing you'll give back one.

I feel like I have an abnormal set of requirements for the headphones I’m looking for. Good audio, battery life, comfort, and ANC are all important; but I’m also looking at something that is easy to clean while also being rugged enough to handle not-so-clean environments. I work in an environment with white dust particles that can rub into clothes and equipment like chalk dust. I would need something that is pretty air-tight and also easy to wipe down after a work shift. I also wear nitrile gloves to prevent it from getting on my hands so something that is as hands-free as possible would be important, so that I’m touching my headphones with dirty gloves as little as possible. Not to mention that I workout after work, so being lightweight, sweat-friendly, and snug on my head so it doesn’t shift around are crucial.

1.) Soundstage is predefined by the studio recording. Everything else is a myth. Instruments, voices etc ALWAYS have the exact same place no matter if you listen via 200 or 10.000 Euro/Dollar speakers. It's the same with headphones.
2.) Headphones are suffering from a big design flaw. Because they are basically Loudspeakers positioned left & right of the listener instead of in front of him. Unfortunately studio recordings are always made for "stereo triangle" which means two speakers 3 meters in front of the listener with also 3 meters space between them. That's why the sound is completely wrong when listening throughout a headphone. You're suddenly in the middle of the stage between the orchestra, not in front of it.
Sennheiser 550 and Sony XM4 but also B&W PX (had them all and still own the PX) use "angled" drivers which means they are in an angle of 25 degree so that the sound comes a little bit more from "in front of you" instead of left/right next to you. That helps a bit but it's still far away from the stereo triangle.
The Sennheiser PXC 550 which I owned nevertheless features a very impressive DSP algorithm (within the "smart control" App, it's called "spatial") which can be activated on them. If activated, the sound comes from "in front of you" like from loudspeakers. It's absolutely amazing and unique.

PS: To get into that settings options you have to go into the "Regisseur" (in english language settings probably called "director" or something) menu first ...

Cons: not as comfortable, price, touch controls not so accurate.
I dont care which cable they use for charging or about microphone, because I use them at work because of loud environment.
