Drummer extraordinaire Chris "Daddy" Dave on tour with the Robert Glasper Trio. Filmed March 2008 at Charlie Wrights International Bar, London. A fantastic gig.
I'll never forget the day I found this video three years ago..completely changed my perception of drumming and what it can be..so many drummers do this kind of thing, but to me chris is the true master...and it's always a treat to hear him lay back on a simple groove when he does it every once in a while lol..such an amazing feel
One of the GREATEST ever. The rythyms and patterns he comes up with are out of this world. He plays between the beats BETWEEN the beats and makes it look effortless.
I feel you on that. I know it's real but at the same time its like its so good that it just SEEMS unreal. I been listening to him for a while now and I tell you he's a beast. I would listen to him and Chris Coleman all day.
I've admired "Papa" Jo Jones and Chris Dave for their fun-loving swagger behind the kit. "Papa" still is the man, but this guy is perhaps my favorite modern drummer. He just plays with freedom.
i always come back to this and the underground video if i have to force myself to go practice. something about the way he is at the drums, how they're set up... and knowing what we know about cd's work ethic. oh it's also burning lololol
gospel drummers, although he isn't playing in a gospel setting, I believe he is exhibited some of the characteristics of gospel fills...but they seem to be a culture unto their own, creating a very specific and complex feel within any kind of musical theme, jazz, rock, latin, etc
inside chris dave is a metal drummer waiting to explode and play blast beats all day! haha im joking don't crucify me, i love playing in 7 and i love this guys style, also the mix of his style in the jazz trio setting, his work with Tony Grey was ill too
i feel like people give j dilla too much credit on chris dave videos like more than like 0.0001% of what he's doing he had to derive from j dilla's drunk groove
@@jonasdamion1627 a good reason they do that is because chris dave plays a lot of his tunes. Take this video at 1:46 for example, before it almost goes full "raindrops on roses" they are playing dilla.. if they never played jay dee probably people would have less to say. They play jay dee because there is obviously love and mutual admiration.. dilla made music that was a nod to the drummers who played jazz but loved funk hiphop and dub. His whole style was in that connection and that awareness. He was a drummer too but he couldnt do what chris does. So understandably the drummers following his body of work and immediately connected to his lineage, would return the nod, and here some person always thinks they are smart for pointing it out. But the connection is fact. There is an obvious dialogue. Chris Dave without dilla is something you can't imagine.. Hitchcock without edgar allen poe, well, maybe that too
yeah cd is the man! it must be a blessing/curse to play with this dude... no matter how dope you play (robert glasper is playing some beautiful shit in this clip) i think people just watch chris the whole time. i do... i feel like this is how dave chappelle would look if he played drums
yeah i think he can just kind of tell. when i jam along to this song, it helps me to think of the bass groove, like from the beginning to 49 seconds, and use timekeeping that way.
@ThePhodut Yeah, I just got into the old jazz stuff, and I noticed chris doing a lot of things that Tony used, and the swiss army triplet is a well used tool in tonys tool box.
It is highly suggested that all metronomes practice with a Chris Dave for tempo and rhythmic accuracy.

4 years later.. Still my favorite drumming vid
Know the feel bro...
Matthew Britt seriously tho I look a drumming so differently now
I return here 14 years later and it’s still 🔥🔥
His approach to drums takes the word "standard" out of jazz. There is hope for true evolution to modern jazz.
Chris dave doesn't have a tight pocket...the pocket has a tight Chris Dave
rah lol
at 2:09 how he plays the hi-hat is so sick. Not only how he can come up with such ideas but the skill to execute like he does...second to none!
two sticks.. one hand... *mind blown*
One of the GREATEST ever. The rythyms and patterns he comes up with are out of this world. He plays between the beats BETWEEN the beats and makes it look effortless.
I just got hip to this guy like 2hrs ago. How is he that good? No one should be that good!
been there
Why ? We need more advanced musicians than ever for technology at this point

Some drummers are on time. Some drummers chase time. In this instance, I think time is chasing Chris. Wow.
His subdivisions and feeling of the beat are so crazy. Glasper sounds great too. Cool stuff here
Probably one of the more creative drummers I've ever seen.
I'm going to fucking lose my mind if I listen this any longer!
Redonx. And in 7/8 the whole time?! What a beast!
Chris Dave and Mark Giuliana are the most innovative drummers that i have ever heard!
That's what my drummer says. Anyway we are now restructuring my book to fit into this intentional polyrhythmic deal.
Check out Yussef Dayes...;-)
Like Adam Deitch said...Dave is the most profound drummer on the scene.
Deitch is another groove master. Both big influences for me!
I feel ya.
Definitely an acquired taste. Not for everybody but hey thats what makes the world go round. To each his own.
so much soul and technique at the same time.
This video got me into music production. Changed my life. Found this like 7 years ago
I just keep coming back to this solo..
This cat has an amazing sense of time and unreal chops
this dude is innovative. truly innovative. his chops are out of this world, too.
That would be some serious dynamics!!!Which only guys like these utilize anymore what a pleasure chapeau c'est magnifique et encroyable

That drummin at its BEST!
Amazing.
He is the one of the universe..
the calmness on his face LOL!!! its like its just so easy...
You can't learn this in a book. It's all feel.
Don't worry about all these technical things. Just feel it.
This is the perfect video for up and coming drummers. You don't need a 28 piece kit to blow minds.
pretty special. thanks for posting.
this is UNREAL BEAUTY!!!
his dynamics are ridiculous, one of the best jazz players out there
I feel you on that. I know it's real but at the same time its like its so good that it just SEEMS unreal. I been listening to him for a while now and I tell you he's a beast. I would listen to him and Chris Coleman all day.
I can Hear God when he speaks through the spirit of music. Thanks Chris remember the Howard days.
yeah!!!!!!! had me on the edge of my seat!
Chris is a drumming young genius. Truly awesome. Brother Michael L. Ellis
It's focus, this cat has 24/7 access to infinite intelligence because of that stare.
wow, i cant even break down his concept and style lol, one day... this guy is my favorite drummer
so true man, i strive to be a good musician like chris.
First vid I've seen him crack a grin in.
I remember when i first saw this vid and i was like " wow! jazz can sound like that?!hmm. Some real innovaters right here.
robert glasper. great musician.
OH MY STARS I ADORE THIS MAN SO MUCH !!!!!!!!!!
I LOVE CHRIS STYLE!!!!!! my ultimate drum hero
I've admired "Papa" Jo Jones and Chris Dave for their fun-loving swagger behind the kit. "Papa" still is the man, but this guy is perhaps my favorite modern drummer. He just plays with freedom.
Sick, Chris is the boss of rythm. There are only a few drummers that can create such an amazing vibe.
Holy Balls!!! This guy can spazz out LIKE FREAKING CRAZY! Amazing drummer!! I'm floored. :D
1:44 that melody makes me feel so nostalgic I love it so much...
I don't even try to understand the rythm here! That Chris Dave guy is sick!
!Nat!
That's probably the BEST SNARE I'VE EVER HEARD!!! X-)
Speechless...
The name of this song is Jelly's Da Beener. off of Robert Glasper's album titled Canvas. Released in 2005. The bands name id The Robert Glasper Trio.
mindblasting, extraordinary, exceptional. \m/ rock on!

wao true talent here amazing taste
Jamire Williams has a video playing this same song... I don't understand the comparison of these two very different styles. Love them both.
it's not drumming it's art
amazing
Yeah, agreed, Mark Guiliana and Chris Dave is where its at for drummers.
Awesome :)
this cures my headaches
This is that Jelly's da Beener joint. LOVE it b/c Dave has his way of controlling the time in a refreshing way... you still feel a groove...in 7 =)
That just good ole' inovation.
first vid i ever saw of him 8 years ago
0:53 Gotta love that smile that says, "Yeah, I know what you just did."

I wonder if he realises how fucking cool he looks.
Very, very nice playing.
Chris u betta play
woooooo
saw him with bilal at yoshis in SF. incredible.
the 1st video i saw of him
Johnston Middle School's Finest
my guess is that he can just feel it. i think that once you are as familiar with the drums as he is, you just feel where everything lines up.
unreal.
LOOOOL.
SICK
Very nice
Sounds like some Jay Dee drumming, fantastic stuff

Seriously... this guy is the new Tony Williams. Period.
The whole joint is
He teamed up with Pino and D'Angelo for D's upcoming comeback tour!
if you listen to the hi hat when he gets to the max tempo, it's in time
How is that even possible to side stick that quick. No one plays like him

7/8. right on the money.
Chris Dave is so great....real awsome drummer....BUT STILL THERE IS NO NUMBER ONE CLEAR BEST....DO THE RESEARCH
he's too creative
@ThePhodut Yeah, I just got into the old jazz stuff, and I noticed chris doing a lot of things that Tony used, and the swiss army triplet is a well used tool in tonys tool box.
That guy gets alot of gigs.
Was that... A one hand roll on hi-hats? About two minutes in?
it was. Goodness gracious, and this is from 2008
Chris O'Neil he can do the same thing with one he just ain't trying to crush dreams like that
