Drum's are Great, they help you to express your self in your own way. That's what i find fun when being be-hide the Drum's. You see everyone has a story to tell, it would be nice to find a bit about, writing note's down, because playing by ear, mean's not really playing, by the rule's, i know it's wrong, but Drum's are alway's fun to learn, something new all the time. You are is usually conjugated into the contraction "You're," but I spose if you're talking about the possessiveness of his speech, what you're saying makes sense.
i like the groove check with the metronome, but I honestly think it is easier to have 16th triplets on the met, and just think of his style as variations of 3 over 2 (triplet/duple). thats actually how to appropriate the groove to the downbeat of the music. not as you suggest with the met on the up beats. but im so glad you are on this TOPIC!! great practice ideas BRAH :)
GREAT video man! I was always able to play the daddy vibe by feel but could never explain it. The displaced metronome is perfect for this and will help me clean mine up
I use a lot of cowbell clave patterns on the hihat especially the rhumba, lot of fun.I recall the hip thing was swung against straight, like messing with MIDI swing offset? Very cool lesson, thanks.
The left hand should come before the slinky right hand and not after, which is how you played it. So the left plays something more like "and 2 and, and 4 and" and not the triplet partial like you are playing. Or R LR B LR R LR B LR (right left right both etc) Its sort of like right hand plays a shuffle while left hand plays off beat 8th notes and back beats, but its really more than that with Chris Dave.
+The 80/20 Drummer I don't have much interest in trying to play like others or putting out videos showing people how to do it. I just thought it was a fairly obvious thing if you watch him, especially if you are trying to play it like he does. Maybe I sounded too harsh. I should commend you on the use of the metronome, not many people do that (feel it on beats beside the downbeat) but it helps a lot.

I stand by the spirit of the videos - here's how to embody what Chris is doing in your own playing - but I could have added more caveats.

These videos are for the most part engaging and widely --spread style wise. I would suggest and challenge you to one months worth of "how to play like Nate the 80/20 drummer ". What better way for you to get better and us as well.
I am a little confused why when the metronome counts, you verbally count the numbers off the beat of the metronome. I expect the numbers to land exactly on the metronome beeps. can you explain what is going on here and why the vocal count is not in sync with the metronome beeps? or am I hearing it wrong?
The "beat" is between the notes; yeses, it's a little weird, but counting off between the metronome is how one who is unfamiliar with the idiom can grasp it.
Another drummer who's style absolutely can not be imitated. To have that type of energy you must be feeling it in the moment not trying to reinterprete his same energy. Y'all need to spend less time trying to learn how to play like other drummers and learn your own style and develop your uniqueness, otherwise THERES ALWAYS ANOTHER DRUMMER. (artists are irreplaceable tho)
It really sounds like what he is playing is swung sixteenth notes putting the metronome on the last beat of the swung sixteenth, then playing the let of normal triplets to get that feel. From what im understanding he is saying he is only doing triplets with the metranome on the let and then him playing on the pul. Anyone?

Drummers goal should be to focus on making us dance with only that basic quarter note beat at 06:12 . The rest is icing on the cake, and will not work well without a good cake.

So where you put the metronome effects how you interpret the beat... hmm... Anyway, do you ever do metronome studies where the metronome gives you a click every down beat, or every two measures, or every 4 measures?
What you're playing doesn't sound quite correct to my ears, though it's pretty close. In the original medley video, the first pattern doesn't sound swung, it sounds syncopated. The second pattern isn't necessarily just swung either. It sounds more like a cross between duple and triple making the pattern sound uneven and out of time but loops in time, sort of like a sample on a record that is slightly off. It sounds more like he drags slightly and then catches up with the beat, or vice versa. It doesn't sound like simple notation. Chris' style has a lot more to do with feel in my opinion. But maybe that's just what I'm hearing.
Maybe I'm hearing the subdivisions differently in my mind. Hearing you play along sounds different from when you play solo. I guess I don't hear or feel it "swinging" in the original, at least in the first pattern. The second pattern seems like it's somewhere in between swung and not swung. I'm not entirely sure. The sound of your playing, objectively speaking, seems more stiff or rigid than Chris' playing. I think I'll just have to keep listening and playing until I can figure out what I'm hearing.
+Miles Burke I agree it's somewhere in between straight and swung, and it's open to interpretation. I fully admit I'm trying to get people "closer" with this lesson, but there are definitely shades of grey the notation doesn't 100% capture.

+Sky McKinley No. Vinnie could. It's a matter of what you practice. I use matched and traditional both, depending on the context, but I don't spend a lot of time trying to get fat rimshots with trad. (Clean rimshots, yes, for Greg Hutch stuff, but not really going for volume)
Nope I think you missed it, there's only one Chris Dave and only one you. At the end of the day rudiments only matter to a certain extent, your own personal style and how you express your SOUL is what matters.

@ 9:36, there seems to be two hi hat notes missing - on the 'and' and 'a' of beat one. You are starting the HH part on beat 2. Is that correct?
