Chris Dave has been playing like this way before Weapons of the Modern drummer came out. In fact JoJo predicted drummers like Chris and Dana Hawkins coming out of the woodworks over 15 years ago...
I'd actually be pretty terrified to be in a room with Chris Dave and Jojo Mayer. If they come in contact with each other, it might rip a hole in space and time.
I've now watched this a bunch of times, and I'm just blown away by the variety of sounds he's getting out of a very very simple kit. Makes the guys with the 73 tom, 152 cymbal, wraparound drum kits look really silly. Is it limiting? Sure is. But it's like watching the drumming equivalent of Japanese flower arrangement. The dynamics, the phrasing, the timing.....it's mind boggling.
The last minute (from 2:34 on) was probably what "moved him" the most, though :-) Love those 2 different size cymbals and tambourine shakers, for the hi-hat. Dave worked it, worked it! lol
I like how that guy with the tall hair and beer on the left is trying so hard to head nod and look cool, while Jojo Mayer (a drummer with some of the best chops in the world) is just sitting there completely still and watching.

I just felt like he lost the pocket for a second, and bounced back with the spaced doubles. I can normally keep with all the modulatioms and feel his tempo but I lost it and it wasn't because it was too hard

He doesn't. He just knows where to come back in. Even when he messes up the pocket he doesn't lose the time so it sounds cohesive
