    Man...Brad Mehldau is the truth. First heard him years ago through a friend of mine, a fellow jazz musician. I had never before (and still haven't since) heard a more fluent and melodious solo genius in my life. It's like everything he does just flows into everything else effortlessly. Quite refreshing in this age where many musicians equate complexity and skill with how "off" you can get.

    I'm telling you, I keep coming back to this one. This is a good video to check out what Dave brings to the table. I love that it sounds like the groove is about to unravel, but it never does. He has this way of laying a groove on top of a groove...it's brilliant, clear, and inspiring.

    This has become one of my favorite Dave videos. As for the refferences to other drummers and people - Vinnie C, and Gad are cool, Wynton isn't my fav - I like Branford better. Can't take away from Wynton's work ethic though, and the dude was able to do both jazz and classical - I think that's something significant. As for sheer inspiration and creativity - Chris Dave is the new cat. He strays from the time, yet he owns the time... it's refreshing.

    You speak the truth. It's nigh impossible to balance one's desire to do cool shit with the basic responsibility of giving the music what it needs. Especially when you're brimming with cool shit to play, like Chris Dave. I'd say it's the number one thing that many modern jazz musicians are thinking about the least.

    That's a good analogy. I guess whenever I work on new poly-rhythm stuff, I usually write them down and see exactly how each rhythm plays against each other.. you can usually set "landmarks" on the way. i.e if you are playing dotted quarters against quarter note in 4/4 you will be on the beat on beat 4 and beat 3 of the 2nd measure..etc. You can do that with triplets, quintuplets.. the possibilities are limitless

    It sounds like 7 to me. Dave isn't always playing the bass drum on "the 1", but if you listen to Glasper and the bassist, it sounds like the song is in 7. 7/4.
    Your ears aren't lying to you... it's just that Dave is an animal. I'm still blown away by this.

    Bruuuuuuh, you know what's funny about Chris? You ever heard of 'The Millionaire Next Door'? Well, Chris is 'Super Drummer Next Door'. The way this dude carries himself, you would NEVER think he was a world-class drummer. Like, there are a lot of good drummers, and a lot of great ones, but not only does he groove so hard, but some of the things he can do technically are kind of unreal. I mean that literally. I can't imagine how much this guy has practiced in his life, but it is abundantly clear he has practiced A LOT, for MANY years. Not only that, but he has clearly pushed himself. To hell with that, it's like this dude gets high, and thinks, 'What should I practice today'? Some of the things I've seen him pull seems unthinkable, and yet he thinks of it and actually practices it.

    Listen you all, because the seven beats in the measure are quarter notes if I'm not mistaken that is what makes it 7/4. If it were seven eighth notes to a measure it would be 7/8.

    Still loving this video. Still can't figure out what he's doing in the bass drum. I'd have to slow it down from the beginning till about 1minute in. He makes it sound like two different feelings... loving the interplay between Glasper and Dave. Glasper lets Dave go, and Glasper uses simple ideas. It's amazing how this all comes together. There are times when Dave settles into something and times when he goes crazy. It's high level!

    you're right.. listening to it again.. I think the problem might just be the recording itself.. it's coming through the video mic.. I can see the bass player reacting to the drummer but I can't really hear it.. I do love the feeling of this performance though.. especially now that I listened to it through the drummer instead of the piano player.. thanks.

    The only one who you can't hear as much is the bassist. Dave doesn't miss a beat, and he's with Glasper in everything that Glasper does. You may like to hear more piano in your mix than anything else - makes sense if it's a piano trio. I've never heard any other drummer with Dave's approach. I still can't figure out how to notate that crazy groove - in 7 nonetheless. Steamrolling? You need to check out some other clips of Dave on TH-cam. This dude has more than you think under his belt.

    I love Chris Dave, but at points he is making this about him. His various rhythmic concepts are brilliant and can be felt in so many different ways. It's the times he plays them like tricks that cheapens the music. I'm with you on this one. But don't knock the Daddy. He's the man. Try just listening to the stuff he does, like isolated. If nothing else, it's fun as hell.

  • @sweetoldetc
    @sweetoldetc 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's in 7 for sure, but Chris is doing some stuff to imply 4/4.. I think that's where the confusion is. You can imply a lot of things over any meter.. like 3/4, 5/4 or subdividing triplets in groups of 4, 5..etc. The trick is to not get lost when the other rhythm is crossing over and you still feel where you are and where 1 is in the original meter. I still get lost when I do stuff with drummers like this, but when it locks in and I keep it together, it can be a lot of fun.

    wow... you must be joking... or you're probably a punk rocker. Pianists don't play so that your impatient desire for fast and percussive sounds is quenched, they play to hold all of the music in a session together. Without the pianist there would be no constant musical force for the drummer to deviate from in his hits and fills. Even if he can hear the melody in his head, the music would lose all its substance.
