Thank you for the very complete tutorial! The one circuit you missed in your cleaning was the enrichment circuit. I just ran into one that was clogged to the point that no fuel was being added but would increase the idle at start up and keep it running
Every time I build a S&S "E" carb I tell people not to touch the throttle if the enrichener is on or they will foul the plugs. This was the one that the guy needed to pump the throttle to get it to start and stay running when cold

The idle air mixture setting should be set with an approximate 25 rpm drop on the rich side of the peak idle adjusted rpm when tuning. Idle fuel/air mixture is negligible for any increased fuel mileage, except at short idle times; long idle times of an air cooled engine increases cylinder friction with increased temperature and shortens engine life. The idle fuel/air mixture setting has no purposeful function at open throttle positions.
To truly "get the best mileage you want to get" with a carbureted engine, one should invest in an adjustable main jet, if the carburetor will accept it; adjust with a locked throttle at a desired constant cruise speed, set to a 100 rpm drop on the rich side. Fuel air mixture is constantly affected by elevation, temperature, humidity, barometer change, and manifold pressure (MAP); all of which affect the density of air or Mass Air Flow (MAF) into your engine. adjustable main jet settings should be performed periodically with any significant change of air density or when riding at a different continuous speed. When running the rich side of a peak rpm adjustment with about a 100 rpm drop, a slight amount of unburned fuel aids in cooling and lessons cylinder friction with reduced heat (too rich a mixture causes carbon build-up and fouling).
Cylinder head temperature (CHT) will rise substantially with any rpm drop set to the lean side of peak and engine detonation will occur, this significantly shortens engine life and defeats any fuel economy gains. Generally speaking: If you have gray soot in your tail pipes you are running a good mixture, if the soot is black you are running too rich, and a chalky exhaust is indicative of too lean a mixture. An exhaust temperature gauge (EGT) is the easiest most accurate way to determine proper fuel air/mixture settings of an engine, by setting the temperature of the exhaust gas 100 degrees Fahrenheit on the rich side of peak rpm. EGT will continue to rise with an rpm drop on the lean side, until combustion becomes almost impossible.

Yeah forget that carburetor cleaner that's backyard stuff need to get a gallon can from Walmart AutoZone checkers the gal can carburetor dip cleaner take the carburetor completely apart make sure you remove all the o-rings anything plastic remove set them aside that comes with the basket put your parts in basket make sure you disassemble the whole carburetor put all parts in the basket play basket in the carburetor dip can do not leave these parts in the can longer than 30 minutes Max are your parts come out looking brand new take an air hose to everything if there's any residue carbon buildup still find yourself a paint gun cleaning kit what are the little tiny brushes clean out all the holes in your jets intermediate jet make sure your spray inject tube is clean that sits in your float bowl is sprays into your carburetor fake gun cleaning kit between all your carburetor parts take note scrapers or sandpaper memory cloth anything to that carburetor very delicate remember take the whole carburetor apart just down to the body of the carburetor and that's how you successfully clean the carburetor don't use carburetor spray cleaner brake clean any of those products is a carburetor dip can parts basket like 20-25 bucks 730 minutes on your part to clean without breaking your back standing over the counter trying to clean your parts by hand the only thing you're going to do is end up with a backache and still have dirty parts with massive scratches in your parts very delicate you are supposed to replace any part scratched damaged make sure you replace every o-ring
Make sure you replace the carburetor wood spacer plate there's an o-ring on that wooden spacer and there's another o-ring on the carburetor the wooden plate o-ring goes towards the manifold and you can't adjust the carburetor if the air cleaner isn't on it s&s recommends having the air cleaner on the carburetor when adjusting the carburetor hopefully my information will help you even more don't throw your carburetor around on the table you can break something real easy watch out when you remove accelerator pump to replace it turn down your carburetor do it over a bowl frying pan a pot do the fact that if you aren't familiar with that carburetor he has a couple little o-rings in there that will need to be replaced and has the two little tiny ball bearings or somebody flips that off of there and they was barbarians go flying and you'll be looking for days for those stupid little ball bearings so be careful removing the accelerator pump I mean make sure you replace accelerator pump it's a little diaphragm the little tiny o-rings let the little ball bearings sit in so for the whole kit master rebuild kit for s&s super e s&s sells it for $120 the kit has everything you need replace everything inside that carburetor and outside master rebuild kit check it out s&s super rebuild kit don't let all these other people with these ads for $29.39 $50 for rebuild kit weather in Yonkers what they're doing you won't get the right o-rings I'll send you black o-rings not the blue blues for gas black is for water are green is for air conditioners so don't be fooled play these cheap rebuild kits Amazon selling eBay any of those my straight up s&s rebuild kit from s&s pretty smart huh well I hope I helped everybody out some what I have 537,000 miles on my FLT 83 bought it new for $5,300 used to have a shovel in it after I blew that to pieces in the middle of nowhere in Nevada for what it cost to rebuild the shovel I built me a s&s Big bore Evo that that hits140 mph barely turning the throttle I've never been able to open the throttle all the way the bike won't hold up to so remember bike seats longer than 30 days when you have an s&s carburetor you need to take a carburetor apart and you repeat the cleaning process that's what s&s requires look up locker in that carburetor and it gets all sticky don't think about cleaning it with a can of carburetor cleaner that doesn't work maybe for the final process of cleaning after you pull it out of a dip can and if you get some bad gas air leak or something getting a black residue real light start the bike warm it up take a spray bottle of warm water put it on mist give the bike some gas insert missing the water into the carburetor make sure you keep the bike running it will break down all the carbon up your vowels valve stems valve guides number one thing about working on a bike if you aren't sure about something don't be a dumbass and not ask somebody to help you out don't look at the first video you see on TH-cam scroll through them find out who actually knows what they're talking about Daniel tiger run forever what knowledge you have share with other people if you see them having the same problems can't learn unless you ask that's why I've been riding my bike the same bike for like 40 years who could afford a new one play the world is you need to make more payments bye it play cash that way you don't worry about somebody coming in repo in your bike it's yours to do what you want with if you don't like the style change it your leader you don't like the style that you changed change it again anybody will ask you what color is your bike this year what did you do to your bike this year take the time over that winter will you bike into the house put some tarps down that way for sure now your free time consist on working on that bike wake up early in the morning to go to work got some time turn some wrenches after work after dinner can't sleep at night get up and work on your bike sit there and watch a movie are you working on your bike don't get in a hurry take your time relax and you won't be fighting working on your bike don't be bitching and moaning throwing tools cuz you can't get something done if it starts pissing me off take a walk come back and you'll see exactly what needs to be done funny how that works well good luck to anybody working on the carbs take your time if you need to be somewhere I need to do something then don't work on your bike there's no rushing doing anything remember that your life in your hands and your friends girlfriends wives it's their life in your hands because if you screw up working on your bike if something happens on the road it causes an accident because you were in a hurry to get something done so you could ride your bike if you take your time there are no problems everything goes nice and smooth check it once to make sure it's done right check it twice make sure it's tight and take it for a ride couple miles down the road come back and look everything over to make sure everything is tight and right get a friend because you might have forgot something a bolt a nut a washer two sets of eyes is better than one can you tell I have cabin fever this is a long-ass comment been having health issues when was the last my leg Dr George just want to kill you off keep you around as long as you can it's an
