    I had a friend that was a purchaser for an engine manufacturer and he purchased a lot of cams from Crane. We were in Daytona one bike rally and he setup a tour for us through the Crane cam plant. I was able to purchase a 490 cam just like the one you have there along with the adjustable push rods for wholesale. As soon as got back home, in went the cam. Perfect for that engine. I also added an S&S E model carb at the same time. Best engine made by HD in my opinion.

    Nice you show the gasket differences between the three possible types. Ive seen this mistake before.lot of guys just slap the new cam in and have no idea about pinning it . Seen some whining clicking evo's. With the owners smiling about there new cam job . jd

    Some videos produced by others have no mishaps when rebuilding something. This video explains a problem that's discovered, and investigates how a solution would be.... i.e. the cam gear being too big.

    Mr. Tatro, out of curiosity have you ever experimented with putting a roller style bearing in the cone in lieu of a pressed bushing?

    I was told by a mechanic to stay away from the 1987 1340's. Was looking to buy an 87 FXR low rider custom that had 56k miles on it. Was one owner and immaculate. However the mechanic said the 87's had a brass bushing on the crank that "it's not a matter of if they'll fail it's when". Ever heard anything like that?

    • @obfuscated3090
      @obfuscated3090 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No such animal in the 1987 factory parts book in front of me. I've owned my 1988 FXR since new and bought the book at the same time. No strange bushings in mine nor have I ever heard of any questionable bearings except the infamous garbage INA cam bearing in those years. I replaced mine when I swapped cams. If a mechanic or anyone else tells you something like that, they shouldn't say "a bearing", they should state WHICH SPECIFIC bearing and WHY it's an issue. ALWAYS double check and ALWAYS study your ass off before buying expensive machinery. Cherry FXRs are getting hard to find. I have well over 100K miles on my '88 and it's still on the stock bottom end and only had one top end job. Do yourself a favor and check out forums for detailed info on anything you are interested in. vtwinforum has a very good FXR section and harleytechtalk is worth your time.

    S&S makes a low quality part...[ i agree with you. ] i installed a S&S shift adjustable linkage for a 1990 FXRP.. 6 MONTHS later if fell apart... i had to install a Heim style adjustable shift linkage. now that will not fall apart for a long time. $ 97.00 but it is great part...The spherical rod end bearing was developed by Nazi Germany during World War II. When one of the first German planes to be shot down by the British in early 1940 was examined, they found this joint in use in the aircraft's control systems. Following this discovery, the Allied governments gave the H.G. Heim Company an exclusive patent to manufacture these joints in North America, now you know how this joint was found by a plain shot down they put a patent on a part they never made Haha...

    Tatro, I have a 95 Heritage Softail lifter just came apart broke the tappet housing. While I was in there I was going to change the plastic breather gear and the guy said he would rather leave a plastic one in it! How do you feel about that? Have you ever seen the teeth strip on one? Just wondering. His theory was debris could get embedded in the plastic and not in the metal breather gear. Thanks

    • @TatroMachine
      @TatroMachine  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      he is a dumbass. the plastic material acts like a lapping arbor and eats up the case. it is usually out of round and does a poor job of correctly breathing the motor. harley also could not make up their minds on what the breather timing should be so they made big changes in the timing and did not tell anyone what they did. use the s&s reed valve. the breather timing will always be correct.

    Just a curious question. How does pulling the pinion gear off change the crank trueness? thanks. I assume its impossible to measure the pinion while its still installed?

    • @TatroMachine
      @TatroMachine  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      on the cheap ass new cranks harley started using in 1990 the pinion shafts are very small and twist when you tighten the pinion gear nut. every time you touch that nut the trueness of the crank changes. install the earlier crank design into your motor and you will be way stronger.

      @@TatroMachine what year was the last good Evo Harley built? I have a 95 lifter locked up broke a ear off of the tappet box the needles didn't come out and make a mess but the bike had 55,000 miles on it I never been touched. Put a Andrews 27 cam in it at about 3,000 MI and that was it. Seemed like I do remember hearing about some cranks being wobbly in those bikes.
