The Oak Ridge Boys 6 or 7 years ago teamed up with Home Free and sang this together a cappella. Super good!

Just had to tell you that when this song was a big hit, my daughter was attending a Catholic high school, and one of her teachers was Sister Elvira! Not lying!
The man with the black hair, and suit, actually did the bass. His name is Richard Sterban. Great voice and fantastic group. They have a ton of hits in the country as well as Gospel genres. You should check out more of their hits.

When Richard Sterban was younger he looked a lot like Glenn Quagmire from Family Guy.
He was also a backup singer for Elvis.
He was also the bass singer for the Stamps Quartet that sang back-up for Elvis Presley.

Richard Sterban - the well-dressed one in the suit and tie - is the bass, and is one of the most recognized bass singers in country. Before he joined the Oaks, he was part of the Stamps Quartet who sang backups for a guy called Elvis Presley.
For Jordan's passion, Richard was also one of the original investors of the Nashville Sounds, the Triple-A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers.
I remember when they hit the charts how shocked everyone was that he was the bass and not William Golden

This brings up bittersweet memories for me. My dad would take me and my sisters to get pizza and the restaurant had a juke box. He would let us play some songs but we always played this for him. Thought it was his favorite. Years later he said it's a good song, not his favorite but he never sad anything because he was proud his 6-10 year old daughters weren't selfish and thought of him too. He passed in 2019, song still makes me tear up.
I feel the same. Went to a baseball game Atlanta Braves, special day with my Dad. Between innings they played this song and Dad started dancing acting a fool. I was horrified before turning around and seeing the whole second deck dancing and acting a fool. It was a moment to remember with Dad who passed in 2010.

The playful rivalry between the Oak Ridge Boys and the Statler Brothers in the 70s and 80s was one of the best things in country music.

By the time the Oak Ridge Boys covered this song and made it one of their signature songs, Elvira _Mistress of the Dark_ was growing in popularity on TV also.

This group The Oak Ridge Boys and another group The Statler Brothers were big mainstream Gospel groups for decades before moving to secular country music in the 1970s! Both groups were known for their awesome harmonies and have many more songs for you to explore!!
In the future with either group the music video and live versions are what you want to react to as they are entertainers as well as awesome singers!

I think I may have met your stepmom. There was this bar I used to roll into on my Harley when I was in the Navy, and there was this one woman that every time she heard this song she went to long lengths to make sure everybody in the bar knew that she just hated this song. She was a trip. A lot of us waited till she was drunk and made sure that we put the song on just to get to her, it was hilarious to hear her scream from the other side of the bar and get so upset.
Did she say why she hated it? I knew a Sherrie who hated "Rock the Casbah" by The Clash until she found out they were singing: "Sharif don't like it", not "Sherrie don't like it".

One thing I will never forget, back many years ago, I was walking through the assembly were I work and this song came on a radio station and every line turned to it and 15 assembly lines blaring Elvira.

It went to number 4 on the pop charts back in the early 80's.
Over played big time back then. I remember being sick of hearing it back then but loved hearing it again for the first time in prob 20 yrs.. lo. That,s how much it was over played.

This song was out about 1980/81. It was a huge hit! My high school was 99.99% Black in the heart of the city. Everyone at my school was walking around singing this song. We all knew it word for word.

The Oak Ridge Boys are country legends! So many great songs: Leavin' Louisiana in the Broad Daylight, Dream On, Sail Away, Y'all Come Back Saloon, Come On In, Bobbie Sue, American Made, etc. Their harmonies are always to good.

This song was the Oak Ridge Boys' very first country-crossover hit of the early 1980s. The song went all the way to hit #1 on the Billboard Country chart and it peaked at the #5 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for three weeks in a row during the summer of 1981. This song was a monster hit indeed!!! By the way, the guy singing with the deep voice is not the guy with the white beard. The third guy on the right with the black suit is the one with the deep voice.

Actually, the guy second from the right is the bass. The guy with the big ZZ Topp beard is the baritone. It's not always the biggest guy that does the bass. Look at Pentatonix. The biggest guy is Scott, the blonde, who's their baritone. The original bass, Avi, and their replacement bass, Matt, both are shorter and leaner than Scott.

The Bass is Richard Sterban, he actually sang with and backed Elvis prior to joining the Oak Ridge Boys.
Everyone loves “Elvira.” The deep base is the young guy, not beardo! There was a sitcom, “Mike And Molly” and Mike had a tape stuck in the cassette player of his car. Of course it was the Oak Ridge Boys. In a hilarious scene all the men of the show were in the garage working on the car and singing “Elvira!” You should check out the show sometime. Another great country tune from the same era is Brookes & Dunn, “My Maria,” a favorite of my late wife.

the original Oak Ridge Boys got together in 1947..... Before these guys could walk. Oak Ridge Tennessee was a town built to support and house the top secret nucular (atomic bomb) program. Originally a gospel group

I love this song! They drew a lot of inspiration from a 50s/60s R&B group called The Coasters, who you *have* to check out soon. Some of the Coasters' hits are "Charlie Brown," "Yakety Yak," "TV Fanatic," "It Ain't Sanitary," "Youngblood," "Poison Ivy," and my favorite, a song which came with its own skit (which I've never seen 😞), "T'ain't Nothin' to Me."
As some have said Josh Turner has a great deep voice. "Would you go with me" is one of my favorite songs and video!!!
Back in the days when the Billboard Top 40 included different genres of music, a track like "Elvira" which was a huge #1 country record could cross-over to the Pop chart and do well. "Elvira peaked @ #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1981 and won a Grammy for Best Country Vocal Group.
A great pick for Female Friday is one of the first and biggest crossover hits of the late seventies "Don't it make my brown eyes blue" by Crystal Gayle. A month at number one on the Country chart, three weeks at number two on the Pop chart, only kept from number one by the second-most overplayed song of the Seventies, "You light up my life" by Debbie Boone. (Most overplayed was "Love will keep us together" by The Captain and Tennile.)

I think many children have a song that they can somehow relate to at a very young age. Elvira was that song for my nephew when he was three years old. I can still see him in front of the stereo dancing and singing "Elbira" - such a great memory. J&A - Maybe one of your children will pick up this catchy tune and it will produce many fun and special memories too!
I love that you're getting into country, but can't believe you haven't started diving into George Strait. One of the very best! I'd start with "Amarillo by Morning", but there are at least 30 great songs to pick from.
I remember as a child my uncle would sing along with this song. It's the only one I remember him singing, but he sounded like he should have been with them. So, this song is a pleasant memory.
"High Ho Silver, Away" was the quote of The Lone Ranger that they used. Love watching The Lone Ranger as a kid and helped me love "Elvira" even more.
I was lucky enough to see them in concert when I was 9 or 10. My sister and I flipped out when they looked directly at us and waved!! Bobby Sue is one of my favorites by them.

This is one of my mother’s favorite groups! She loved this song. This is one of the first songs I remembered learning! Yes I’m that old!
This song was incredibly popular when it came out. Back in those days I worked as a DJ at a small market country station here in Southwest Michigan and we would frequently play requests. By far, this was our most requested song. Our Program Director had to limit how often we could play it. We could have put it on a constant loop and it wouldn't be good enough for some people.
Oak Ridge Boys had a such a beautiful song with Sail Away, it spent 13 wks top of country charts in 1979.

You would LOVE, LOVE,LOVE the version of Elvira done with the Oakridge Boys and HOMEFREE. It’s more uptempo and the arrangement and the harmonies are amazing and the video just makes me smile plus the base singers from both bands are out of this world
Love you guys. I'm a metal, hip hop, and R&B head but grew with my father loving him that ol southern country. And the Oak Ridge Boys were one of his all time favorites when it came to old country. They were one of the best back in the day and are legends. I ain't heard Elvira in years since I was a kid omgosh the memories. I miss my father.
