"Elvira" features a simple and catchy melody with a memorable bass vocal line. The lyrics revolve around a man's infatuation with a woman named Elvira. The lyrics playfully describe the man's longing for her, with lines like "My heart's on fire for Elvira."
The song is notable for its deep bass vocals provided by the group's member Richard Sterban. His distinctive "oom poppa omm poppa mow mow" is one of the most recognizable elements of the song.
"Elvira" was a major commercial success. It reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart and No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song's crossover appeal helped introduce The Oak Ridge Boys to a broader audience.
The song earned The Oak Ridge Boys a Grammy Award for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group. "Elvira" is one of the Oak Ridge Boys' most iconic songs and has become a country music classic. Richard Sterban the bass singer was hired by JD Sumner of the Stamps that backed up Elvis.JD Sumner actually sang under him.JD was in the guineas book of world records for hitting a Double low C
The Oak Ridge Boys started out in gospel music
And they still sing gospel songs at their shows.
------ the studio version of this is super smooth and that bass voice is 2x as good as the live one. I'd invite the viewers to give it a listen.
Excellent reaction!!! Such a great, happy song!!!
My guys-it’s time! Oak Ridge Boys were fantastic and now you have to see them pass the acapella crown to the genius Home Free! They all sing Elvira together. I’d start first with Home Free’s take on Man of Constant Sorrow. The best acapella group out there with a world champion beat boxer to boot adding a hip hop flavor to boot! They have a huge fan base and they will ALL will be coming your way because we support our guys big time! ❤❤❤❤❤❤
I don't think they are ready for the a capella rabbit hole 😂
When the two groups got together to sing this song it turned into 🔥 🔥 🔥!!!
If you want to hear more of that deep voice, listen to their song “Dream On”. His voice will blow you away in that one!
I'm a bass-baritone, and I blame trying to voice match Richard Sterban on that song as I was growing up.
Elvira is alive and well and still looks fab. I will always love you was not remade by Dolly she actually wrote and released it before Whitney.
I agree with the commenter that said YOU MUST now watch this song where the Oak Ridge Boys got together with Home Free. Pure amazement.
Agreed! The collab is so much more energetic - just an absolute blast!! A little bittersweet, but a must-see.
The ladies love the mmmm papa mow mow 😅❤
The best part of this reaction was watching Fenom's face in the lead up to 'that part' bc he knew what was coming. 🤣
I`ve always loved this song! I remember in 7th grade chorus this was one of the songs we sang because it was brand new and our music teacher loved it. It was fun! Great reaction guys!
Now, I'm not one to brag, but people come pretty far to see me get low on the "Mow-Mow"!
My mother LOVED this song!!!
Loved this song when I was a kid! Fun song.
In 81, Elvira, Abra Cadabra from Steve Miller and Sweet Dreams from the Eurythmics were the first radio songs I learned ALL the words to.
Great Gospel quartet
Love them. *and this song on Mike & Molly (still a funny scene)
This song took them from county fairs to national TV. The other Elvira was always a blonde in a black wig.
Hello fellas, glad to see this band being recognized, they have some really good tunes. And you have a good ear, the Oak Ridge Boys gospel songs were just as popular as their pop and country songs. Here's another one of their top hits to give a listen, if interested. "Oak Ridge Boys - I Guess It Never Hurts to Hurt Sometime (Live)" (by the channel: LowBase) As always it was fun rocking with you fellas. Thanks for sharing. peace out~
Yes I love this song❤
Fun video/reaction guys. I'm not a big country fan and don't recall any other Oak Ridge boys songs besides Elvira - a song I always enjoyed. The Bass singer here did some backup vocals(along with group he was part of) for Elvis Presley before joining the Oak Ridge Boys. Another country/pop 80s crossover you might want to react to is "Achy Breaky Heart" by Billy Ray Cyrus or perhaps some more Shania Twain.
You have to check them out singing this song with the group Home Free.
Yes!
I saw them in Branson when I was 19 and got to shake their hands. Erik Estrada was at the concert and got my picture taken with him. It was an epic 80s baby concert for me 😂😂
I have seen them live on my birthday. What a surprise!
Not a Country Music fan, but my parents took me to an Oak Ridge Boys concert when I was a kid and I heard this.
70s country. 😎
My father's favorite song...thanks for bringing those memories back❤love y'all
Gents- American Made and Gonna Take A Lot of River are two other fun great country chart topping songs from the Oak Ridge Boys in the 80s. Love to see you react to them also! Huge smiles throughout this whole reaction, finding out about Elvira and that iconic bass. Watching three lifelong friends go down this great music journey together, can’t thank you enough for the reactions.
Thanks again gents and look forward to more reactions.
A super fun song!
As always... Y'all rock👍👍 FYI, Elvira is still alive and Olli I hate to break it to you, but she plays for the other team 😳
True enough. In a relationship with the same woman for about 20 years as of 2021...
I giggled much. I got some way back old woods folks n my fam. Had a flash back lol
😆 I'm a bit surprised to see you all react to this one! My mom is a big country music fan, so I know this one well. ❤️✌️
Great reaction guys , really enjoy your channel 👍Btw Dolly Parton wrote the song I will always love you " in 1974
Ill be true to you is a favorite
As mentioned earlier... Now that you've heard this version, you should check out Home Free's version, sang with a much older version of The Oak Ridge Boys. Fantastic!
I saw the Oak Ridge Boys in concert in September 2023. They are still great singers even though all of them are in their 70’s or 80’s. One of them had to sit in a stool for the entire concert but he could still sing well. Oh, and the bass singer was still hitting those low notes right on pitch.
Papa Omm Mow Mow is actually a separate song that's easily incorporated into other songs. Like Surfin' Bird (...bird is the word...)
The Bass is Richard Sterban
My sister & I saw them in concert. Richard's voice is so low that it is like a kick drum. You could feel the vibrations hitting you in the chest. Plus, his voice hurts the ears. I am not complaining, but that voice is D E E P!!
Please react to Elvira by Oak Ridge Boys and Home Free, it is amazing!
The Oak Ridge Boys started out singing Gospel.
Check them out doing this with Homefree
It was the 70s…I remember my mom loved it ☺️
1981
I know of a song that no one seems to want to do a reaction to, which is sad because its a tribute to our fallen. Its an awesome song at least to me it is.....Angel Flight (Radio Tower Remix) By Radney Foster
You guys need to check out their cover of Seven Nation Army by the White Stripes.
A friend of mine thought they were singing "Hell, fire up" and it was about marijuana.
Misheard lyrics are always fun. My mother used to talk about a child who misheard a line in a hymn, or the name of the hymn as "Gladly, The Cross-Eyed Bear" - (though the story might have been fictional).
Kinda feel like y'all should do my ding a ling by chuck berry next
I grew up on this song and I'm Black.LOL
This is decent but doesn't exactly capture the sound of the recorded version, and tbh they were helped by studio magic.
As for Elvira , check out her early modeling pictures as cassandra peterson.
Song is not that good as far as lyrics or tune, but the presentation and hook are undeniable.
WHAT made you waste your time on this?
Two songs... "Gonna Find Her" and "Alley Oop", both from the fifties, have the same tune. Elvira is a rip-off!
This band consists of Smiley Singer, Low Ballz, The Mountain Man and.... Mark.
