I was born and raised in Nashville, Tennessee. Been away from home for many years, but every time I hear Rocky Top I feel proud of Tennessee and a tear comes to my eyes. Smokey Mountain Rain by Ronnie Milsap is another famous Tennessee song.
Definitely give Allison Krauss a shot! In her early days with Union Station, she was heavy into bluegrass and played the fiddle. She progressed more into popular music into the 90s. Also, she has the voice of an Angel.
Her song “Paper Airplane”is one of my favorites
Allison and Robert Plant did some good work together. Her cover with Union Station of When You Say Nothing at All is a beautiful vocal performance.

Union Station is one of those groups where every single musician is world class and have their own solo careers but still come together for tours and studio time. Alison is still heavy into Bluegrass and very much a current star in that genre, along with her Union Station bandmates. That said, yes, she has had much more success in crossing genres than the rest of the guys. Of course, Dan Tyminski was the singing voice of George Cloony in "O Brother Where Art Thou", Ron Block is one of the smoothest mellow guitar players around, and Jerry Douglas is absolute king on the dobro. It's a great ensemble and well worth a listen, especially if you can watch a live concert recording. Bluegrass tends to be very acoustic and doesn't have that "wall of sound" effect that can cover many errors by the artists. Union Station just doesn't make errors.
I saw her open for Garth Brooks at Murphy Center in Murfreesboro back in the 90s. I thought then and still do that he should have opened for her.
Flatt and Scruggs are probably the most famous of the genre from the early years. Whenever I hear bluegrass, I always think of how The Beverly Hillbillies brought that music to people who would have never heard it otherwise.

Bill Monroe is the father of bluegrass, but Ralph Stanley (Stanley Brothers) is the VOICE. He developed his incredible unique vocal phrasing growing up listening to his dad sing old gospel hymns a cappella. He tells the story of having the choice of a pig or a “banjer” for one of his early birthday’s. The rest is history. “A Man of Constant Sorrow” and the eerie & chilling “Oh, Death” are prime examples of his legendary singing.

Yes! As a native Tennessean I am busting with pride listening to this. Rocky Top is one of Tennessee’s official state songs.
As a reference, Rocky Top is referring to the beautiful, gorgeous Smoky Mountains in East Tennessee.

I was lucky enough to see the Osbourne Brothers back in 2004 or 2005 with my fiance. Saw them in a small-town theatre in Mount Airy, NC. My soon-to-be bride remembered Rocky Top when she was a kid, so I took her to see them in person. The small venue was awesome. They interacted with the crowd, and made it feel so personal. Wonderful show. They had a new fiddle player at the time, a really young boy, and someone in the crowd yelled up, "let's hear that boy play the Orange Blossom Special!" That's an instrumental, and the kid laid into it. Did a fine job, too. Driving a truck, I used to haul steel out of Dayton, Ohio down to South Carolina, and coming down Interstate 75, there's an exit for Rockytop, TN. So it's a real place. I always wished I was in a car instead of a semi, so I could get off and do some exploring. Y'all should check out "Ruby". That was another one of their hits. Keep up the good work. Y'all put out so much stuff, I'll never live long enough to see it all, lol! Love y'all.
This song is the fight song for the Tennessee Volunteers football team. I've loved this song since I was a little girl and I LOVE the VOLUNTEERS when they adopted this song I was sooooooo happy. Glad you enjoyed it

ROCKY TOP is the University of Tennessee's fight song. For several years it's been voted the #1 college fight song in the country.
That’s what I was going to comment and was surprised that they hadn’t heard it before. Not saying they’re being fake at all... just a little shocked that they’ve never heard it? I can watch a college game and hear just about every version of that song there is.
thanks for playing my favorite song. This is the fight song of the University of Tennessee. Its probably played at least 12 to 15 times at each game. It's amazing listening to 100,000 fans singing this song as the band is playing this song. My wife and i go to every home game for the last 28 years. Peyton Manning played there and Reggie white also. I'm sure Rob knows these 2 great former NFL players. Bill Monroe was known as the king of Bluegress and that's who you need to react to. 10 or 12 times? I sat next to the U..of Tennessee band at a game at Notre Dame and that band played the refrain to Rocky Top every time rbe Vols got a first down. Seemed like way more than 10 or 12 times to me. 😉

The first time I heard the Osborne Brothers changed my life. They completely floored me, I'd never heard anything so good and I still haven't. I managed to make it to over 70 something shows and they'll forever be my favorite
Many bluegrass musicians are brother acts. The Stanley’s most notably, but Bill Monroe (the “father of bluegrass”) began his career as a duo with his brother as well. Check out Ricky Skaggs, Vince Gill, Dailey & Vincent, Rhonda Vincent, and Patty Loveless is a must!

Rocky Top is the unofficial fight song of the University of Tennessee. About 10 years ago a small town in Tennessee changed its name to Rocky Top. Outstanding song!
Bluegrass music is a genre that has a huge range. I would recommend listening to the Del McCoury band doing “Get down on your knees and pray “. Their are great live versions of this on TH-cam. Think you both will love it!

I used to work Gatlingburg, Tn and had a call to the actual hotel and then THE room that Felice and Boudleaux Bryant wrote this banger. Was cool standing in a musically historic spot. Hats off to East Tennessee.
I use to play in a bluegrass band years ago.Whenever we played at a bluegrass festival,there were 3 numbers people would often request to hear.One was...."Rocky Top"...one was a banjo number.."Foggy Mt. Breakdown"..and the other a fiddle tune...Orange Blossom Special.These are fast hard driving numbers to play that Bluegrassers love to hear and also to "flatfoot" to.A lot of what makes a great bluegrass band is not just the tight musicianship but also the harmonizing of the vocals.
If you ever make it to South Central Kansas, you should check out the Walnut Valley Bluegrass Festival In Winfield. One of the best around. (But NEVER eat any food that comes out of the Pecan Grove camp ground! They use special recipes, LOL)

Flat and Scruggs do the Beverly Hillbilly show theme song and Petticoat Junction and Salty Dog Blues, Ralph Stanley. Love the tenor. Mandolin is a main instrument with the banjo and guitar. Also, a amazing banjo musician is Steve Martin, the comedian. Most of the bluegrass players do dress in very nice suits

"Bluegrass" is a direct descendant of the fiddle, guitar and mandolin music that was brought over from the aulde sod by Irish and Scottish immigrants many, many decades ago. The essentially African-American instrument, the banjo, was added as the years went by. Some of the most beautiful songs are ballads with ancient lyrics. I think you two would have fun researching some of this music!

They use 5 fiddles/violins for the sounds of the train! And no, Jay, they are NOT dressed in bib overalls and barefoot, spitting tobacco into a coffee can! Lmao!
And not just NOT bumpkins. Many bluegrass musicians are virtuoso players. I don't know a lot about him, but you should check out J.D. Crowe, he just died today. Jim and Jesse, another brother group. Diesel On My Tail. Del McCoury is worth checking out, too.
I'm with you Norman! It sounds more like Jordan was describing a hillbilly jug band! Rhonda Vincent, "The Hardest Working Woman in Bluegrass". She has an AMAZING solo voice, but I almost like hearing her sing harmony because she knows exactly what to give based on the singer(s) she's harmonizing with and the mood of the song. Let's not forget that she's pretty accomplished on several instruments. And her band, The Rage, is made up of musicians that are each world class in their own right. She tried country music and was phenomenal, but she decided to go back to what she loved most, bluegrass. They have so many great songs to choose from.
My sister-in-law was a national champion fiddle player. She played Orange Blossom Special, with my husband accompanying her on banjo, at Bush's inauguration. 🥰

Tit might sound uncivilized and a bit hokey but bluegrass music (played right) is one of the most difficult genres to get involved in because the level of talent one must have to play it is much higher than that of nearly any other genre other than possibly jazz.

I grew up on both bluegrass and metal, and to me, the genres are VERY similar from a technicality standpoint despite being very different in sound.
Bluegrass is to country as metal is to rock. And bluegrass is basically acoustic metal 😂

Absolutely love Flat and Scruggs. And I agree with you about the Foggy Mountain Breakdown. Then Bill Monroe. Uncle Pen is great. I do not like Ricky Skaggs version. It is not a good second in my opinion. That is just my thoughts on it.

@@briangulley6027 you know I may have known that. But I am not going to say I did lol. Memory is faulty. However, I did meet a nephew of Earl Scruggs in 2014. He attended my church in a different state congregation we met at a church gathering of multiple congregations. He and his wife were there and he was our song leader for choir. He has since passed away.

When I was a small child, a few guys would get together in my uncles living room playing bluegrass. We're talking in the deep mountains of Tennessee. My mom loved this. She's buried on a mountain there. Although I've lived elsewhere my entire life, that's where I'll be buried too.
Yes! You can't help but smile when that high lonesome bluegrass vocal kicks in. Bill Monroe is a bluegrass star you should totally check out.
If you want Country/bluegrass sound on a banjo look up Roy Clark on the banjo. He was a master of guitar and banjo and always fun to listen to. Also since he moved to Tulsa in 74 there is a strong connection to Oklahoma. A more modern group is Southern Raised Bluegrass. My favorite of theirs so far is Orange Blossom Special which is a classic song. Lastly for a female banjo player I like Mean Mary and my favorite song is Iron Horse.

Jerry Garcia (of the Grateful Dead) had a couple bluegrass side projects. One group was called Old & In the Way, check out their song "Old & In the Way" (yes, "Old & In the Way by Old" & In the Way"). He also did a project with David Grisman and Tony Rice called "The Pizza Tapes". Their version of "Shady Grove" is just phenomenal!!
Rhiannon Giddens is probably the best NEW bluegrass singing banjo picker out there - just watch her 2015 Austin City Limits singing "Ruby" - it will BLOW YOU AWAY!!!! she opened the Concert for Ken Burns docu "Country Music" you will be blown away - she is probably the only black bluegrass singer out there these days!! Her Poor Wayfaring Stranger is great!!!!! Thes best out there!!!!

The instrument you're asking about is a Mandolin. The vocal style is called High Lonesome. Bobby Osborne, Bill Monroe, Ralph Stanley. Del McCrory, are just a few artists famous in bluegrass. Rocky Top is by the way the School song for The Tennessee Volunteers!

My father was born and raised in the Eastern Mountains of Tennessee. He moved to Maryland, where I was born but as a kid my dad would take us to Bluegrass Festivals and I would see The Osborne Brothers and many others in person.
The musicians would walk around and talk with the folks that were there to see them.
One of my favorite songs from them was Tennessee Hound Dog.
You should check Molly Tuttle. She is the first woman to win the blue grass instrumentalist of the year award. When she gets going you can't see her fingers.
Dan Fogelberg is some one you should react to. He was not blue grass per-say but but out a great blue grass album in 1985. It is called High Country Snow. Great Bluegrass album.
It isn’t bluegrass but very few reactors have done Okie From Muskogee by Merle Haggard. It is such a fantastic song. I think you guys would really enjoy it.

I'm very late seeing this, but I was surprised y'all didn't immediately connect this song to the University of Tennessee. It's their fight song. Also, Sonny Osborne died a few years ago, and Bobby passed away June 27, 2023.
My dad was a banjo player in a bluegrass band in the late 70s and early 80s called Backporch Bluegrass Express. All of his close friends were in the band. All band members had RVs, and in 1980 we all went to a bluegrass festival called Redgate in Knoxville, TN. The Osborne Brothers were there, and I instantly became a fan after seeing their show. I went backstage (you could do that then) and hung out with them a while. Really nice folks! After that, I'd try to see them and chat at every festival we went to that they were playing at. They came to know us on sight!

In bluegrass, the stud singer of the group is often the high tenor harmony singer, not necessarily the lead singer. People like Bill Monroe, Ralph Stanley, Del McCoury even someone like Ricky Skaggs. That high lonesome sound is very indicative of bluegrass.
For a more modern take, you might try early Alison Krauss or Nickel Creek.
Old Crow Medicine Show is another good modern group
Lester Flatt ( of Flatt & Scruggs) is another good example of that high-pitched, nasal toned vocal style.
The great Earl Scruggs and crew with Foggy Mountain Breakdown is probably the most well-known bluegrass song to folks outside of the genre, unless you count Dueling Banjos. There's a great video of him and a bunch of famous country players all playing the song later in his life. It's a lot of fun.

Music straight from the Appalacian Mountains of Tenn, West Virginia, Kentucky, North Carolina, etc (although has Irish roots from settlers, Celtic music).. They play this song at Tennessee Volunteers football, basketball, baseball games.
Bobby Osbourne (lead vocals and mandolin ) is 90 and still performing. His brother Sonny on banjo recently passed away.
I just came on to say this. We have a banjo business and I do the inlay for Sonny's banjos.
Bluegrass is a form of Country-Western, so you might find a lot of crossover between artists. But, look for Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs “Foggy Mountain Breakdown,” and then a group called The Dillards who were featured on The Andy Griffith Show often in the 1960s. @@DrDanQ If I recall correctly, before around 1950ish, the term "Country" music didn't exist. It was called "Folk" or "Traditional." But music with those designations were automatically "public domain," and could be recorded by just about anyone without penalty. From what I have read, the term "Country-Western" was coined so artists of those genres could receive royalties and avoid having their music stolen. I'm sorry that you don't like those designations. Steve 'n' Seagulls is a current bluegrass group that covers mostly classic rock songs and reconstructs them to a bluegrass style. "Gimme all you're lovin" The ZZ Top cover is my favorite they do but any are good to me. Some of the bluegrass purist may not like it or think its real blue grass, I'm not sure but it sounds good to me. Also I'm surprised Rob hadn't heard Rocky Top being a big sports fan. You cant see much of a Tennessee football game without hearing their band playing it or the fans singing it. It's like an anthem for them.

There's a young cat that's an amazing guitarist that is taking old time music from different genres like this and just making them his own. Check out Billy Strings, Dust in a Baggy. There's different versions of it out there, including one from a house party backroom back before anyone knew who he was. Check it out.

Bobby the one with the high voice playing the mandolin is a brother to the big guy playing the banjo, Sonny (Who recently passed away). The Osborne Brothers are from Hyden, KY just a few short miles from Hazard, KY and still live there, well now Bobby does. They are members of the Grand Ole Opry, Inducted into the International Bluegrass Music Hall Of Honor and were the CMA's Vocal Group of the year in 1971. Bobby and his cousin Dean Osborne (Who married my cousin) now teach Bluegrass music at a music school that is part of the Hazard Community College system. Here are just a few names you might be familiar with that started out in Bluegrass, Ricky Skaggs and Keith Whitley who first met at a Bluegrass competition about 4 miles from my house in a little place called Ezel, KY, I find it a little strange they didn't know each other until then, because they lived in adjoining counties and I live in a county that adjoins both of those counties. Ricky and Keith both played and sang with Ralph Stanley for a while. I remember seeing them when Keith was still with Ralph at Natural Bridge State Park MANY years ago. Back then you could actually meet and greet the guys in the band on a personal level. Since I could practically reach out and touch the stage I met them fairly quickly, one thing I found out is that even though they were big name entertainers they were first and foremost people (With a TON more talent) with the same feelings, values and opinions that you share. It was kind of amazing to find out that they knew some of the same people you knew and shopped at some of the same places you did and so on, even though you didn't know them it was like you had a connection with them. Little did we know that Ricky and Keith would both become megastars, with Ricky winning FOURTEEN Grammy awards (So far). Here are a few more names of people that have played Bluegrass, Bill Monroe, Patty Loveless, Andy Griffith, Steve Martin, Charlie Daniels, Marty Stuart and Vince Gill to name a few. My mom actually worked with Bobby back in the 1950's at NCR (National Cash Register) before Bobby and Sonny hit the big time. Anytime you want to hear GOOD Bluegrass music just come on down to Eastern Kentucky they are usually somebody somewhere playing Bluegrass, especially during the festivals season. If you really want to see Bobby's ceiling on the high notes, check out the song "Ruby, are you mad at your man" by the Osborne Brothers, Bobby blows the roof off on that song. If you do decide to watch "Ruby, are you mad at your man" the video of the one with them in the brown jackets and the two guys in the yellow shirts playing the guitars in my opinion is the best video, it has over 1 million views.

Bluegrass is the roots of country music. I consider it the "heavy metal" of country. Remember Kieth Whitley? He sang for J. D. Crowe And The New South before going solo and switching to country.
It is so good watching you two expand your knowledge of and taste for all these different kinds of music. I grew up exposed to almost all of it, and I am so grateful for that.

Well, I just time traveled. This was my dad's jam! (he would have been 88 this year). For a more modern spin on the banjo might I suggest Bela Fleck or Mumford and Sons. The banjo has its roots in Ireland and Scotland and those are my people, lol. I watch a lot of music reactors and I never, in a million years, thought that I would hear the Osborne Brothers. One of the greatest bluegrass performances I've ever seen is Ralph Stanley and Patty Loveless doing Pretty Polly. Her singing will blow you away.
I'm a 61 yr old white man and I watch you both with expectations and I am all smiles while listening to this tune. The lead singer just past I believe it was in 2020. I am a huge bluegrass fan . Did I hear right that she grew up listening to bluegrass? Amazing dear.
Please please please check out The Osborn Brothers “Ruby”. Find the live version from an outdoor festival in the 60’s. The length of time Bobby holds his notes is amazing. It’s one of those songs where you need to hold onto your hat. “Ruby” was written in 1938 by world renowned female banjo virtuoso Cousin Emmie. Also The Stanley Brothers “Mountain Dew”, The Dillard’s “Dooley”.

I was 2 years old in 1967. But I hang out with my buddy's dad who used to play guitar in a blue grass band in Darrington Washington. He said listen to this.... The three pickers, Ricky Skags , Earl Scruggs , and Doc Watson. Pioneers of blue grass. Ya should give them a listen.

You probably got your image of bluegrass from shows like Hee-Haw, tho' I'm not sure you're old enough to have seen that program. For some major names in bluegrass, check out Bill Monroe & the Country Gentlemen, the Stanley Brothers, and Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs. Bill Monroe is considered the "father of bluegrass." You'll also see no blue jeans or straw hats.
The high pitch vocals are also a characteristic of bluegrass, referred to as "the high, lonesome sound." Ralph Stanley is a primary example of that, as is the singer you noted here in the Osborne Brothers.

This just took me back to being a kid in the late 70s and going to Silver Dollar City each summer. They had bluegrass groups in the main gazebo and this was my favorite song to hear from the performers. My kids (10 and 12) get a kick out of it and the other songs on my "Childhood Memories" playlist.

Songs like this are why I love playing bluegrass. It's just a whole lot of fun, and it makes you feel GOOD. A lot of the big bluegrass dudes dressed up in suits and ties specifically to combat the "tobacker-chewin' hillbilly" stereotype.
The lead singer just passed away this week at the age of 95 (I think). He spent the last 16 years as a music professor at Hazard Community & Technical College in Hazard KY, which is near where the Osborne Brothers grew up in Leslie County KY.
Yeah, I went to UT Knoxville and the band plays this song at every game and fans sing the chorus. So even when we’re not winning we have a great time.
