The Suzuki is so under rated. Unless you own one you will never understand how capable they are. I’ve owned the 1987-1998 models and I have done proper 4WD a lot harder than anything in this video and often found myself helping recover, wranglers, discos, cruisers. If your in aus there is mud and ruts, you need the best entry and departure angle. And if you spent 2k on it and got some diff locks it would be unstoppable

I'm Australian and we 4x4 probably more than anyone else. The key to a very capable 4x4 is light weight, twin locked and clearance. Mud tyres, lift, bar work (+bash plates) and a snorkel are also important. If you do these typical Aussie modifications to something like a Toyota hilux you will comfortably outdrive these more expensive cars. My point is these cars (in particular G-wagon and Range Rover) are not made first and foremost for off roading, they are luxury cars, off road is secondary. Enjoyed the video, thanks

Your 7 seat land rover or your jeep wrangler rubicon? Perhaps I misjudged what they're after here. Moreover, if practicality is a big concern here, how is the overall winner a vehicle with only 2 doors? Where does it say that this video is supposed to be an "off-road test"? The title is "best 4x4 2020: What is the best off roader you can buy..." The video is about cars. Nowhere does it say it is an "off-road test", it is a test about cars characterised by their off-roading nature and the video focusses more on the off-roading. Those cars also have on-road abilities that form part of the package. You assume because it is about off-roaders (the cars) that it is a video about off-roading (ability). Don't confuse a video about cars with a video about mere off-roading ability. There is nothing wrong with the host also mentioning the cars' other, more on-road, benefits since the video seeks to give the best overall review of each car, not just off-roading.

My choice for Best 4x4... when you are out on an adventure (not some closed course, where every vehicle is a winner) then you want a capable, reliable vehicle that can take a ding or two; for that, here is my choice: 1. Jeep Wrangler Rubicon (no question) best, most capable of road vehicle. 2. Toyota Land Cruiser, for reliability, and extended trips, 3.Subaru, and Jimny., fun little capable off-roader (with off-road tires) . (4, but joint 2 really) The G-Class is an awesome off-roader, but for the following: 1. if you take it off-roading, people will think you are lost, and 2. one scratch, and it will have you in tears. As for the rest, they are good off-road vehicles, but don't really inspire. FYI: I'm British, living in Cali., and been on many back country adventures... when you are in the desert, far from civilization, you need something dependable. My Jeep JK, and now JL Rubicon has never let me down! :) ... BTW... it takes less than a couple if mins to remove the roof panels, open the top, or retract to roof.
BTW... It's a Jeep thing, some people just ain't going to get it... lol

I used to own a Jeep. Sold it and bought a Toyota 4Runner because it was an all around better daily vehicle, even though I still drive off road from time to time. But there is no way in hell I would pick it, or a Land Rover Discovery, over a Wrangler for off road purposes. A Wrangler is simply the best out of the box, off road vehicle that you can buy for the money. There’s a reason all of the off road trails over here in the Rocky Mountains are called Jeep trails.

My experience owning one so far...
Every ad, pamphlet, sales literature and even the sales pitch at the dealership revolve around it's off road capabilities. Yet doing things I did on a weekend basis with my 20 year old Wrangler TJ Sahara caused the yolk on the front inner axle to fail, taking out a ball joint and snapped an ear off of the now cheap aluminum steering knuckle. All on a brand new 2019 Wrangler JL Rubicon!
First they tried to brush me off due to evidence of mud under the vehicle (for real?). The argument quickly escalated that I possibly hit something despite 0 damage on any other components. They wouldn't say I did hit something for sure, but since it was a possibility... they had an argument. It was also a possibility a part failed... just saying. When making it clear I couldn't be without a vehicle any longer and that I have to get it fixed, I asked if it needed anything else. They didn't know, as they didn't inspect it. They just saw it was broke and dirty and essentially just said nope unless I paid up. I was told they could see if anything aside from what they could see by looking behind the tire was broke, but I'd have to pay for a full inspection. At one point I was given the option to pay in "advance" to speed up the repairs and if the warranty kicked in, I'd be reimbursed. Ya, right...
Being jerked around between the dealership and customer service, I took my jeep elsewhere to get fixed. Doing so apparently waived my right to complain anymore or receive compensation. But after 2 weeks of being without a vehicle... it had to be done. It turned into 3 weeks after everything was said and done.
    That's what 60k buys you!
I've posted this a few times on Jeeps facebook page. Which are all deleted and I am blocked now from commenting. Guess your only allowed to tell people to go ahead and void your warranty work, it's fun!

Even the Mistu has 218mm (all values according to the inserts of the video!) Also in all of the comparisson pairs the one with the better Offroad capability (according to the presenter) is chosen as the winner except in the pairing Disco vs Wrangler.

@llamaha Groud clearance is the height over ground of the lowest hanging part of the car while it stands on a flat ground. (basically how high an obstacle can you place on a road and drive over it without hitting any part of the car) You mention the change in groundclearance while driving: If he was talking about the change he should have said so. (those vehicles shouldn't flex, they are new enough to be stiff, but what you mention still applies: live axles keep the ground clearance between the wheels the same, while it varies with independent suspension)

The Jimny, G-Wagen, Jeep Wrangler are the off-roader's for my point of view that you can modify for your needs, also I would like to mention some good off-roaders like the old Defender, old land cruiser, all jeep wranglers, Fj cruiser, old Hilux, Suzuki Samurai and much more that I can't remember all. The issue with most of these cars is that they are too expensive. If you are going off road, you are going to be worried about breaking something, or scratching a wheel or the paint, which just makes off roading less fun. On the other hand, the Jimmy is extremely capable, yet cheap, so you're not worried about it. However, for me, the Jeep is king. Even though it is somewhat expensive, it is by far the most capable, and because of the huge tyres, small overhangs and underside protection, you are never worried about damaging it. And even if you do, it's a Jeep, so it's considered a memory, and just adds to the character. Plus, it looks awesome !

I love the Subaru. But I don't think it's a better off roader than the renegade. That renegade in it's trailhawk version (which is the one he's using for this test) has higher ground clearance, front AND rear recovery points, multiple terrain modes including rock mode (for lower gear ratios), hill descent assist, multiple skid plates underneath and a higher front bumper for better approach angles. All from factory. I understand the subaru might be the better car overall for daily use, but certainly not for off roading.

They chose to pit the Shogun Sport with the utility 3-door trim of the Land Cruiser Prado due to price. The Prado is way out of its league. The more fitting and fair competition would be the Shogun Sport (based on the Triton pickup ) versus the Toyota Fortuner (based on the Hilux pickup). The Fortuner and Shogun Sport are direct competitors in other country markets like in Asia with almost identical model trims and price range. However, I think Toyota does not sell the Fortuner in their country.

I understand they are going after an all around vehicle here in which case the toyota is amazing and the winner but as the title is "best off roader" then really the rubicon jeep is a champ. However its obvious that off roading means something entirely different in America than in England. Approach angles of the jeep are hard to beat. They’re not as reliable as a Toyota 4 Runner or Toyota Land cruiser but they are a lot more reliable and cheaper to fix than an anything from Britain. Jeep Wranglers have a strong resale value in North America for a reason. The Renegade however isn’t a real Jeep as far as I’m concerned, it’s a Fiat platform. The Italians are just as bad as the British when it comes to engineering and reliability. The Wranglers are still mostly mostly American so they are little more durable when it comes to off-roading and resale value.

I don't agree with beating vehicles up like some do off road, but there are plenty of trails and places you can go that doesn't involve scratching and denting everything. In fact I don't enjoy that sort of off roading.

A very fair and relevant British review which doesn't give the win to Discovery merely on the basis of ah being British.

Some one explain to me how you can compare a 3 Door Toyota against a 5 door Shogun Sport ?
Shogun Sport is a great offroad vehicle and is more affordable than a 5 door Toyota. Notice they compared the Poverty pack 3 door Toyota to a fully spec'd out Shogun ? Cause the Toyota at the same level would be competing with the Discovery.

There is no way any of these will go as far as the wrangler will go, I do agree the disco would be easier to live with, but the wrangler is the best off road vehicle.
