The iPhone headphone jack is a TRRS connector - carrying both the headphone signal and the mic signal. You can tell by the THREE rings on the connector. The standard mic jack has TWO rings, only carrying the mic signal. A typical input jack is only connecting with the TWO rings on the plug and on the iPhone plug (TRRS) they simply don't line up inside the jack. The adapter connects to the TRRS rings and only carries the mic signal to the TRS rings on the jack. Always nice to explain WHY you need an adapter rather than just saying, "You need this thing to make it work." Otherwise, nice video!
Thats not correct you can use either the aux with 2 or three rings, the problem is with the apple aux because they have a different arrangement. One uses OMTP an the other CTIA so the ground and the aux (in this case the mic) is reversed.
@@xnn-bx6wl I have a lavalier mic that is not Apple brand and it doesn't work because it is TRRS and the jack on the GoPro Media Mod only supports TRS.
The gopo mic adapter you talk about right at the beginning of the video still works for Gopro 9. From my research, the firmware update around september-october 2020 didn't handle it well, but it's been working after that ever since.
The prob with the audio tests at the computer desk is that the mics on the Media Mod and the Rode is that they are directional microphones - they're made to pick up audio facing the camera, not bouncing around the room. No surprise the lav mic sounded best in that test since it wasn't a fair sample.
I was searching on the comments to see if anyone had noticed the same thing. Good to see that I'm the only one foolishled lol

Just to inform, the GoPro micro adapter works on GoPro 9.
I had this adapter for Hero 6 and now is working perfectly on Hero 9.

Excellent video from the perspective of practicality using and attaching the various external mic... no one else showed as if it was understood.... but when dealing with such highly specialised topics you should tell in details as the set up is new and one can know exactly the amount of investment required...after some time all would be masters anyway..

The O.G. 3.5mm mic adapter now works with the Hero 9 once you've updated to the latest V1.50 firmware

@@DeeL2003 Unfortunately it's not gone so well for me after all. I did a test with this adapter and found that maybe 10% of the time, my Hero 9 either didn't recognise that I plugged it in, or froze, or disconnected from it after some short period of time (from seconds to a few minutes). Stil the same after I did a manual firmware update too. Now it might be the adapter at fault I don't know, but I can't trust it to work every time and so I've stopped using it. I might buy another adapter but it's a lot of money just to find out whether the problem is there or with the camera/firmware.
@@RikkyTang that's unfortunate. It's been working great for me so far, the only issue I have is mic placement due to all the wind noise in my helmet.
@@DeeL2003 I have my mic in a helmet too 😁It's inside two deadcats and wrapped in a microfibre cloth and that helps quite a lot
Confirm it works with caveat, you can either use the external mic or charge the battery, it won't do both. If I connect it to a power bank/source, the Hero 9 will switch to the internal mic. As soon as I unplug it from the power bank/source it will use the external mic. Most annoying if I want to use the external mic and not have to use the battery.

I use the "regular old adapter that no one uses anymore" It's a micro HDMI and works with the external GoPro Display Mod or can be plugged into a video capture card to recording directly to a computer.
whish turns your GoPro into one of the best webcam ever for streaming.
I use it as well to connect to my cam link 4k to use it as a webcam.

Actually if you run the software update on the GoPro Hero 9 today, it will now support the old 3.5 adapter. This video was when it first came out and they didn't support it, but now they do. I need to make an update video 😬👊

so the cable the works inside the gopro media mod is a TRRS cable that is meant for cameras the the reason your headphones didn't work is because its a TRS which is used for phones its pretty sample if you think about it. just make sure there are only 2 rings around the headphone jack and not 3

Has the GoPro9 being updated yet to work with any USB-C to 3.5 adaptor? I just placed an order on the GoPro website and in the specs it states it is compatible with the Pro 3.5 mic adaptor which is considerably cheaper than the media mod.

Checked your link to the media mod case and I noticed that the photos presented on the hyperlink do NOT show the three plug in panels on the backside of the case. Why is that?
The apple 3.5 mm audio/mic jack is TRRS(Tip/ring/ring/sleeve, or rightaudio/leftaudio/mic/ground), and the Gopro takes onlt TRS(tip/ring/sleeve) by using an adapter your are converting a TRRS to TRS.
Sorry but this is false. It has to do with the apple ear buds. I have a lavalier mic that is TRRS and it works fine with the media mod that I use on my 9 and the GoPro mic adapter I use for my 7. You are correct that it is TRRS but that is not why the apple ear buds don't work.

That PowerDewise mic is really funky. What exactly is the point of making a 3.5mm plug which itself needs another adapter for the GoPro ... such a strange setup.

May I ask as I work a lot in the garden with it and those openings seem to have dust / soil: how would you recommend to clean that is safe for the electronics please 😇 Also, the drain microphone (designed to drain water that is not supposed to be a door/latch): Unfortunately as a beginner user of the device it was tried to be opened and consequently broke: How would you try to fix that? As last, Is the microphone behind that door giving a real microphone function? I know a problem has a solution ;)
So do you know if I use a rode microphone wireless go will it work or will I have to use that adapter that you use with your apple headphones?
So if I understand correctly, either we use the protection and we do not have a good sound, or one uses the "media mod" with a microphone but at the slightest stones when we motovlogging it breaks 🤷🏻♂️

The latest Hero9 firmware enables the old external audio adapter, so you don't need the Media Mod.
The Media Mod isn't compatible with screen protectors; the fit is too tight.
All the videos and comments tell me that using an external mic is tricky on the Hero 9. Therefore, I have almost decided to go for a Hero 8 with the mic adapter and that big case that accommodates them all.

There's supposed to be a firmware update coming this November for the old school 3.5mm mic adapter to work with the Hero 9.
BTW: The reason your lav mic & headphone mics weren't working is because those have TRRS plugs (3 lines on the plug) which is meant for phones. The Media Mod (and the Rode VideoMicro) has a TRS plug (2 lines on the plug), which is standard. That's why you needed that attachment plug for the other two mics because it converts TRRS to TRS.
yea i’m waiting for that update, but they pretty much forced everyone who bought it early to get the media mod if we wanted good audio. i thought that was a bad move. Thanks for the input on the trrs connector! 😬👊

I think you’re asking if the one touch record will work on the hero 9 with the media mod and an external mic...Yes. I didn’t have that issue on my hero 5 black. You might need a firmware update.
@@jonthestreet yes, mate. That’s exactly what I meant. I had so many issues with the Hero 5 and the One Touch Record, it worked on first release, the when they updated the camera, it had to be a powered mic for the OTR to work. Lost a whole trips worth of audio, wasn’t happy.

Upon watching this video and refusing to give gopro more money, i discovered that you DONT need the media mod for this at all.
if you plug in the big adapter(the brick), then plug in small thing you showed at 4:25, then plug your mic into that (i use purple panda), it works fine!
why i didn't hear you breathing? in my original audio my breathing sounds so terrible and loud

I'll just use the mic adapter and keep the factory version of the firmware for now, and update later when the v1.5 update is available :) It's nice to see mic levels on the front screen, especially when you are doing motovlogging :)

Sorry, the external mic from the old gopro still doesn't work on the gopro9. I'm running firmware version 1.22, which is showing to be the latest. They might in future updates, but I'm doubting it since they are trying to push selling their media mods 🤑

You really didn't give those shotgun mics a very good set up, you had them a bit too far away and you were facing away from them. They sounded like crap. Set up properly the audio is so much better. Poor video.
