    I’ve been in audio my entire life. Musician, music Director at major market radio stations, club DJ, etc.. I find that when people think a different mic sounds better, it’s because they’re hearing more low end. What I heard on the $30 mic, and others for that matter as well, is more bass, albeit a tad distorted. Deeper, muffled sound, in my opinion, is not preferable to clean mid range with balance tides and lows for a voice. All audio, cardless of the microphone you’re using, will get more clean and have more naturally occurring low tones the closer you get to the microphone. This is why Lavalier mics sound better. The microphone is closer to you. You can always add more low end in post production. It’s similar to shooting video. Shoot flatter and you can bring up colors in post production. Same with Adio. Good luck everyone.

    Just bought my GoPro 10 2 days ago. I ordered the Ulanzi-like cover (I think it is Ulanzi though, I do not trust online shops that much) temporarily for protection purposes. But I will purchase a Media Mod mainly for the HDMI port. I am avoiding the frequent opening of the GoPro door as it may affect the built in internal ports in the long run.
    Thus, my question, is the HDMI port the same type C port? Reason for asking is so that I could charge my GoPro without Opening and Closing it frequently.
    Thank you in advance. New Subscriber here. Your vids helped me in choosing the cam I must invest on, based on my preference.

    Hi Danny. Great video. I’m trying to decide with the go pro hero 10. I like the audio levels. I will be vlogging. So I won’t even see the audio levels but think it’s nice. I’m thinking about getting the display mod so I will see the audio level when vlogging. But I feel like that may be a bulky set up with the mic and possibly light. What do you think is better for vlogging?

    Good comparison! If you don't mind, I can add another info. If we choose the Ulanzi solution, we can also use the mic adaptor in another GoPro version. For example, I use the Ulanzi case with Saramonic Blink 500 B2 on my GoPro H10 and the GP audio adapter but also have the option to use the same setup on my GP H8, with another case of course, that costs just 20 bucks. 😉

    Hi Danny. I’m totally new to GoPro. I’ll be using it for vlogging and as a webcam for client sessions. I’m wondering why someone would need the hdmi out, in case I could need it. It may be helpful to mention I use all Apple products.

    • @DannyBlack
      @DannyBlack  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh ya great point . I may have mentioned it in another video and forgot on this one 🤦‍♂️ but hdmi out is great if you connect to an hdmi capture card and use it as a webcam instead of just the usbc (which works so not a big deal) but also if you want to use it connected to your tv or something that’s another reason for the hdmi . So for you, it might not be an issue :)

    I ordered the Ulanzi G9-14 as I got a mic adapter from GoPro while they are searching for a solution to the popping audio problem I have with the GP9. I compared it with another brand that makes great cages for different brands of cameras: Smallrig. I think the Ulanzi is the better one, but I can’t really compare as I don’t have the Smallrig cage. I use the adapter with a Rode Videomic and their wireless Go system, both giving way better sound compared to the internal microphones. Your video confirms me I made the right choice!

      Oh awesome ! Ya they do sound great with video mic and wireless go, I used to use the 3.5mm set up with my hero 7 for a long time and then ya it was annoying that it didn’t work for the gp9 until the latest update . GoPro 10, Media Mod, and Volta is how I’m vlogging now. I used the Ulanzi tank cage for a while, it got too heavy and clunky. I don’t think the Media Mod mic is all that bad - in certain conditions: indoors and/or outside with no wind. When I need something for windy days outside, I use the Comica BoomX- D1 wireless with a lav mic.

    Waiting for this for a long time. Finally! Thanks Danny! I believe ulanzi is the best option among all these. Great Chinese company makes extraordinary stuff with reasonable price. And idk why I cannot buy the MT-09 tripod on their website. So I asked them through email. They said because of the issues with GoPro website and they were required to unlist it?? I cannot believe that GoPro found a good tripod which beats their Shorty to the ground and then force them to unlist it. If this is ture I would feel shame for them. Apart from that, GoPro's adapter is really expensive. Just for the 3.5mm jack. But even consider of this, I still would go for the ulanzi G9-14. Super solid and practical.

    But the Media Mod has a bi-directional mic, no? The external mic would only point one way so I can either record my own audio clearly and leave the rest muffled or the other way around. MM would record both sides. Or do I have it wrong?

    • @DannyBlack
      @DannyBlack  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      you dont have it wrong. the media mod has a bi directional mic, however you have to choose which direction the mic is capturing on the gopro menu in between shots. its kind of a pain. there are cheap mics out there that do bi directional ... or with the ulanzi set up you can just turn the mic around

    The media mod is fine for me. The mic is also OK. Yes, the external mic is slightly better, but I'm not after high fidelity anyway. As far as that short annoying screw used to attach the MM, just get a longer one and you're all set. One big advantage of the metal Ulanzi case is that it acts as a big heat sink for the GoPro. Well, that's my 2 cents

  • @dpartn
    @dpartn 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I have the Ulanzi, Smallrig and media mod encasement. The only reason I use the media mod is because I bought a couple of them before discovering the cages. Granted I do like how the ports are integrated. The mod makes things seem less cluttered. But we use these in an environment where heat is a factor and the batteries shut down and need replacement. It is a royal Pain to switch out the battery when the media mod is in place. Especially a pain when it is mounted to anything. For those reasons and more I use the cages. I feel using the cages has allowed for less heat buildup. But the batteries still need swapping, but the process is Much easier with either of the cages. The Ulanzi is a little beefier than the Smallrig. It also has better gasket on the doors. The Smallrig does have a better latch on the rear door. My Ulanzi latch seems to always be difficult to release and gets stuck. On the side door the Smallrig allows you to remove the swing door and keep the Gopro door on for water tight use. The Ulanzi does not have the option to remove the battery side door. Other than the small irritant of the back door latch, I think the Ulanzi is the best of them all.

    This all goes out the window if you plan on externally powering the camera. The mic adapter's usb port is "not intended for powering or charging", according to GoPro and footage is super buggy (often with no audio) if you try to use it that way. Since it uses the cam's USB port, you no longer have the option of external power when using the mic adapter. The Media Mod works as intended and I've never had a bad file with either the 9 or 10 in a Media Mod while externally powered. My kayak fishing "always in Hindsight Mode" practices require external power, so the Media Mod is a no-brainer for me. Great audio with external mics... no battery changes... trouble-free.

      So if I get the media mod for the Hero 9 ,I can hook up the charging while live streaming (using it as a webcam)with no issues? Also what charger brand/model do you use?

    • @BarryP
      @BarryP 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@antlearn5030 Double edged answer: Yes, if you are using the 9 with the mobile app for stand-alone streaming. BUT.....No, not if you are using the 9 as a webcam connected to a PC or Mac. The drivers for PC and Mac DO NOT recognize the Media Mod. You can connect the GoPro to the computer via the camera's own USB-C port and your external mic as you normally would, and then just set the paths in your streaming software.

      Thank you for this. Was having second thought on the Ulanzi because I have no idea if the mic adapter works while externally being charged. You confirmed my decision. Thank you so much. Getting the Volta and Media Mod instead. ^_^

    • @BarryP
      @BarryP 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@arjay0490 This is a rarely covered issue. To absolutely confirm, the OEM adapter is a total POS. You are on the right track and should remain relatively trouble-free if externally powered and plugged into the Media Mod. If you have any trouble with the Media Mod with the 9 or 10 following an update, do a full reset. It will remain on the current firmware, but should fix any glitches. If you do so, you'll just have to re-program your presets... but any glitches should go away. Best wishes and happy filming!

    I prefer the Media Mod over the Ulanzi. The two things I use in the Media Mod is the power jack & the audio jack. For the audio jack I use the Comica external microphone or the Hollyland Lark 150 wireless microphone. The receiver & the transmitters on the Hollyland has it's own power so there is no need to us the power jack on the Media Mod. But the biggest thing of all is using my Inland power bank to plug into the power jack to add extra power to my Gopro 11 battery to prevent it from overheating and longer video recordings. The Ulanzi does not have a microphone jack like the Media Mod so you have to use the power jack for your micro phone living no plug ins for a power bank. However I did get the Ulanzi Go-Quick II Extendable Tripod and jerry rigged my power bank on to the tripod for my Media Mod.

    i have both and the verdict is.....weight. The ulanzi metal upgraded case is nice but way too heavy if your vlogging all day.Media mod weighs less and the mic is better than stock, plus you can use the display mod to frame your shot which is nice. While the Ulanzi uses my rode mini mic with a spacer, i can use the spacer and rode mic on the media mod and still weigh less.

    • @DannyBlack

      ya thats not a bad verdict. i feel like if the media mod had a screw thread on the botton and the side for portrait connects to tripods it would be the clear winner to me, but thats the part that gets to me everytime i use the media mod is how annoying it is to connect to other gear (maybe thats just me)

It is very frustrating that you have to turn off the camera unplug the adapter turn it back on then plug the mic adpater for it to work and have an audio, and bcoz of this you cant use the auto record feature like you just have to hit record button, you can record the moment but 100% sure you wont have an audio! Go pro needs to work on that or they just really want us to buy a media mod.
