Is this the perfect pop song? It's both classic and contemporary. The lyrics function on a number of levels simultaneously. Shifts in registers, mood, rhythm, vocal simplicity and complexity , the clarity and playfulness of the instrumentation, the production (!!!) . It's a pop song written and performed by profoundly talented artisans who are showing an increasingly jaded and mechanical music industry how its really done. Bravo ABBA, BRAVO!

I'm Brazilian, born in 92 and i grew up with LPs. I speak Brazilian Portuguese and learnt English around 10 years ago. So at least for 20 years, i listened to their songs, grew up with them without knowing their lyrics.
Yet... The melody, the harmony, the feelings that's i got through their music was an universal language. I felt it.
And now, understanding every word, every sentence, the feeling only grow exponentially.
ABBA has no barriers and they speak an universal language.
I'm going next year to watch the Voyage Tour in England. First time traveling outside the country.
But damn, i won't "shut them down". I wasn't here in the 70s, but now I'm here for them and their music is for me for the rest of our lives.

    🧡 ABBA !
    PLATINUM
    ABBA is back !
The lyrics are very deep. Not only do they speak of their personal relationships, for longevity purposes the words are written about the love between two individuals. However, deeper still, is ABBA's recognition of what their fans have been trying to convince them for 40 years is that the magic is still there, and that we will always support them and want them back. They got the message, understanding things have changed, they, and we have grown and matured, but the love is real, accepting, and the door is open. At 65, and member of the original fandom that helped propel ABBA to global stardom, I am so overjoyed this day has finally arrived. Continued success and a Platinum album for this triumphant return. ABBA deserves nothing less.
    Thank you, Frank.
For the love of music, and ABBA - Peace.

Thanks for the great reaction. You bring so much more than the average reactor to your videos. In the history of ABBA it is known that Agnetha, the main singer of this song, had got "fed-up" with the whole idea of ABBA. All the touring, the fame, the Press, she wanted to get away. She, and the rest of them did for 40 years. They (Bjorn and Benny) convinced her and Frida to "come back". The songs they wrote reflect this "new" beginning. The fact that the four of them were once married to each other makes it even more powerful. You touched upon the "secret" of ABBA. They write "catchy" tunes with profound meaning. A weird combination that seems to be a Scandinavian trait.

Björn said, that the lyrics had to be about them. I think, that these seemingly simple and light hearted lyrics are actually deep and brilliant. On one hand, about them then and now, on the other hand about them now and the avatars looking hot like they were in 1979. Reloaded, don't shut me down. Fantastic. Warm and familiar. The magic is still there.

Great analysis on the songs. I love that you were able to take in the lyrics so quickly and get such a great feel for the song. Some people have said the song has a double meaning that not only is it autobiographical but also perhaps is referring to the fact that when they appear on stage performing this song as digital avatars the lyrics are also referring to the fact that they are standing before the audience in a different form and are coming back in that way as the only way they felt comfortable to do this after retiring from touring.

Some of the very best artists will tell you that ABBA are the best pop artists of all time. I really appreciate your thoughtful, positive reaction. I’m from the US and I’ve been loving ABBA since I was 13 years old back in 1975. A couple of notes: Bjorn Ulvaeus (short hair, short beard) and Benny Andersson (longish hair, bear-ish) have been music writing partners since the 1960s. They have almost always written all of ABBA’s songs. They also co-wrote the stage musical, CHESS. As partners, they then created the stage musical/opera spectacle, KRISTINA FROM DUVEMALA. I think this is why you hear theatricality in their new songs. They were working with the stage musical format as far back as the mid-1970s, even doing a “mini-musical,” THE GIRL WITH THE GOLDEN HAIR, as part of their massive 1976 tour of Europe and Australia. Unlike you, I don’t hear a tv cereal commercial sound in their music because, for me, it just sounds like trademark, classic ABBA :) I think you’re right: ABBA influenced the cereal commercials! :) As for “Felicita,” I had never heard until yesterday; but, interestingly, it was a hit the year ABBA formally broke up. The first thing I thought when I heard, “Felicita,” was, ‘Ah! Bano and Power were doing an ABBA-type song very similar to ABBA’s 1980s songs”-not so much like earlier “Mamma Mia” ABBA” but more like later, “The Winner Takes It All,” “Under Attack” and “The Day Before You Came” ABBA, which are theatrical, bittersweet, “adult” BUT danceable. Sorry for such a long reply but I really enjoyed your reaction and “interact” with it :) Good life!

As I sat and played my ABBA vinyls' and awaited each new album with anticipation. I remember being so disappointed that the Top 40 didn't acknowledge their unique and awesome sound at the time. Like an artists' work that becomes valuable after they've passed, NOW everyone recognizes their ONE OF A KIND quality that no one can replicate. Who, I ask 40 years later who could accomplish this but the AB FAB ABBA! I am 58 now. ABBA is my favorite non-classical musical group of all times, above Led Zeppelin, Queen, Credence-Clearwater-Revival and Fleetwood Mac. By the time the band retreating from the public's consciousness in the early 1980s, I was a poor college student, and could afford only 1 ABBA album (The best of ABBA or something like that). I cherished that LP dearly. Then in the late 1990's they came out with 2 compilation CD sets. I was so overjoyed. I even did some research and found online some recordings of pre-ABBA solo performance of the 2 ladies. Although most of those were in Swede (or Swedish?) they sound so wonderful, even I did not understand a single Swedish wors. NOW, listening to the new songs, I am at loss of coherent things to say. I thing that, musically, lyrically and vocally, ABBA should be their best now. The ladies's voice sound the same, just as good as they were at their prime in the late 70's/early 80s. The 2 men composer/producers seem to have their golden touch of old. And on top of all of those, they are older, yes I just said it, and much wiser. ABBA, thank you in advance for the many gifts to com from you. And Mr. F.V, appreciate very much your thoughtful opinions, whether you are a fan or not.

At 1:22 her voice breaks and for a second she really sounds like the elderly grandmother she is, but when it gets to the chorus, when their unique harmonies kick in, it's full-on 1970s ABBA magic

The lyrics is written to all the ABBA's fans. The "you" in the lyrics are these fans and she (Abba) will come back in another form "not the same as before", namely the Abbatars that will be their next form of appearances in concerts and shows.

I love the old xilophones in 70s music, when properly used. Marvin Gaye´s album "What's going on" has a lot of it. It provided a beatiful contrast between dense arrangements.

I’ve read other posts referencing “Felicita.” I’d never heard that song, so I listened to it yesterday. I noted that “Felicita” was a hit the year ABBA broke up. Then I thought, “Hmm, Bano and Power were doing an ABBA-type song back then,” very much influenced by ABBA’s production techniques and late period songs. I like “Felicita” now and can see why it was a hit.

In a world of constant change how nice is it to have consistency. This could have been released in their heyday. Who loves change right! I know its essential blah blah... but my god Isn't it nice to fall back into the comfy and reassuring pillow of Abba, and know they are exactly what you remembered 40 years ago. I MEAN ACTUALLY EXACTLY LIKE!!!! And the lyrics are a beautiful tribute to their fans. Thank you for the music
How can I love you so much when we have never met, Because the songs you sang me taught me how and that I won't forget

Interesting review from a handsome man.
But you didn't mention the voices blended perfectly together and the harmonies so unique to ABBA.
Yes, Benny, the composing engine of the band, borrows a lot from south European music (Italian, Greek, etc.)and it's melodics. And it all starts with the right catchy melody. All the rest (lyrics, arrangements, backing vocals) comes later.

i take this song to have 2 meanings one from a personal relationship that ended and the other from the personal relationship they had with their fans. esp the line that she had left because she had had enough. and now she is back and she is not the same and now and then combined. so accept me for who i am now. and that she has learned to cope and love and hope . for all of us who love them. i cried like a baby hearing these new songs. it was like seeing an old friend or relative i had not seen in 40 yrs. what an astounding gift to bring the world just when we needed hope and love the most after what has happened the last 18 months. theirs is the comeback of the century and i know the world is a joyous place again for a moment and its all thanks to ABBA for their incredible talents of songwriting, singing and production and for creating even more classic masterpieces. viva ABBA forever!!

7:43 Lots of people complaining on their "type of sound" being unchanged? But what other types of sounds are there, in pop music? "Hiphop"? "Soul"? What is pop today? To me, this new Abba sound is actually a little similar to Max Martin's productions (another swede, behind B Spears, P S Boys, and many other names).

I think it's a reflection on their lives and you are correct; There's not much time left. These songs stir up all kinds of emotions in me as a person approaching 60 years old. Reflecting on what has happened in your life, how much you threw away (possibly the last 40 years for them) and what time you have left to try to make up for that. I do believe their Legacy will be around for eternity. Not many can say that these days.
