After a historically poor season and with new leadership in charge, many fans might be wondering if Erik ten Hag’s time has come to an end.
If so, one of the interesting names that has emerged in this hypothetical scenario is England’s very own Gareth Southgate.
Famous for turning a toxic England team into a lovable bunch and reaching the Euro 2020 Final, is Southgate the right man for a new era at Manchester United?

i love Southgate mann..his ability to make player like jude and foden seems average is incredibly impressive
I put it down to the darts 🎯
So you're saying he could beat Real Madrid and City?
Saka and Kane manage, maybe they should improve themselves?
@@Gafgarion852I think you miss the banter here mate.
@@shuraamano no, it was also banter.
So based on my primary metric for football decision-making, "how funny would this be?", this scores pretty high.
As such they should totally do it.
without Southgate
England will never go to the Euro final
@@1607Adi_Manzwithout Southgate they probably would’ve beaten Italy 😭
@@1607Adi_Manz With Southgate they lost a final at 1-0 by making 0 substitutions when we looked worse & worse for 25 minutes. He gets the credit for getting us there along with the blame for sabotaging the final by only making substitutions after we conceded & only bringing Grealish on in extra time.
Considering how Man Utd are in their banter era, it absolutely makes sense. The memes we will get from Antony x Southgate will be legendary!
if we wanna continue our banter era southgate is perfect
Every fan group aside from United wants this to happen... Which is a pretty good indicator that it's a terrible idea
Tbh, either way they go, I won't mind if they hire Southgate or stick with ETH 😂
That’s like a handful of Arsenal fans saying they see nothing in ETH and that Ange should leave Spurs foe their lack of desire. Sacking them will clearly set both teams back two years at least, giving Arsenal at least a year to challenge Man City now that Klopp’s gone
@@juanignaciojimenez1986 he is going to get sacked and it won’t set the club back, it’s necessary in order for the club to move forward. He is not the right person for this rebuild for multiple reasons and he won’t accept the much lower amount of control he’d have to accept in order to keep the job.
@@juanignaciojimenez1986 unless you think that playing a 6 man high press coupled with a low block so no midfield, causing United to have the second highest shots conceded in the league after Sheffield United has impressed the new owners? Or the fact that uniteds expected points in the league was only 40, relegation zone numbers if we didn’t get lucky with individual moments against the odds? You can’t blame injuries either because the fact that there have been injuries has been a reason to set the team up differently, more compact rather than watching teams run through us every week. He was criticised at Ajax for this tactic as well. Glad we won the FA cup though, coincidentally one of the only times he’s binned the usual tactic and actually had bodies in midfield.
@@juanignaciojimenez1986 he currently has a veto in transfers, also gets a say in transfer fees, plans the training sessions (injuries) and more. All things that other top clubs leave for the structure not the manager. If he can let this go (which he won’t, he asked for more control at Ajax and asked for this control at United) then he might be offered the job but it’s more than likely Ineos will bring their own person in now like they have done with every other position. We have regressed this season and there’s nothing to say that with ten hag we won’t regress even more next season so it’s more risky to keep him.
At least with the new structure if we have to sack a manager we won’t be starting again since the structure training style of play transfers etc will be decided by the club like at most of the other European powerhouses
What in the hell is the media talking about? We have Ten Hag - a championship winning manager who’s given us a top 4, a Carabao Cup, and two FA Cup finals. And because we’ve had a poor season (due to having more injuries than the rest of the league) we are supposed to sack him and replace him with… Garreth Southgate?
They make more money when Utd stays a banter team. More bad news, more clicks. Ten Hag fighting them and subliminally throwing shade at them is one of the few redeeming qualities Ten Hag still has!
They literally mentioned a whole section in the video how he's the media darling lmaoo so I'm not surprised
Still baffles me how Southgate is even a candidate. Hasn’t managed a club since 2009 and has never crossed the line into winning a major trophy like we’re aiming for at United.
The whole aspect of him brining the England camp together and making them hold hands is cute but Graham Potter is also famous for that. He has a Masters in social science and I’ve heard is quite adept at unifying players. Plus he’s achieved more with Brighton, has progressive tactics and is actually relevant at club level. He’s even younger too.
Would much rather Potter over Southgate. Better yet, I’d much rather fold the club than let Southgate be in charge of United.
Did Potter to Chelsea not happen in your timeline?
He's also WOKE, he'd make a fantastic Dr Who.
@@ArrigoSacchi87 Guess you don't understand the concept pf either or then do you?

“Nah she ain’t break up with me I just told her we need a bit of time apart”
They really want eth sack. As united fan we back him I think giving eth more time is the right thing to do.
I hate the detoxifying argument for Southgate.
I mean we had Ole as a manager who basically did this and then after a year it got even messier as Ole was a pushover and the same thing will happen with Southgate.
it is man united lmao. Have some perspective
It's a nicey-nice middleclass observation, as with most of the Athletic insights.
oles a billion times better manager
Ole's Man United >>>> Ten Hag's Man United.
Don't think the media will be on Southgate's side when they're parking the bus at home next year against West Ham or Crystal Palace
As a Chelsea fan, I would love to see Southgate at Manchester United. It makes perfect sense.
Southgate counterattack will easily demolish Chelsea defend especially without Silva next season
They should hire graham potter, spend 500m, then sack him just as he starts improving the team. Then, spend another 500 million on wingers. They might be able to finish 7th!
Of course you would say that 😭
*evil laugh*
Exactly. In the same way I'd love to see Cole Palmer leave Chelsea.
Ratcliffe says he wants Man United to play attacking football, why Southgate?

I'm Scottish and EVEN I'M fed up of Southgate 😂
Welsh and Scottish fans want to shoot him because they would kill to have the national team England have. Point of correction. Mainoo is 6ft. He recently revealed that in a club interview. He was confused as to why everyone thinks he is 5'9.
Point of correction, no way he’s 6ft.
This is rubbish. They said it themselves that international football is so different than club football, which Southagate is not proven. With all the culture reset topic, again they said it themselves that Dan Ashworth was there before Southgate. So the key is not Southgate, but it's Dan Asworth.
Didnt rooney just say on 'The Overlap' that he went to Gareth first to discuss not being picked because he wasnt playing at united ?
Yeah he did.
Doesn’t fit the narrative, that… what narrative? That Southgate is somehow a good international manager that has England playing like killers. He’s not and they aren’t (we’ll see what happens this summer)…
@@davidgriffith1552done better than anyone else with worse players! Imagine he had Terry,Rio,Rooney, Scholes,Gerrard, Lampard,Owen,Cole and not Maguire, saka Grealishetc 😂 England players aren't as good as people think and we lost tournament coz players couldn't score a penalty
As a Liverpool fan I can not see a better manager to drag man United back to winning ways. South gate is the second coming of sir Alex pep Mourinho and jurgen all in 1 person
I am also torn as a Liverpool fan though. As jealous as I am about it, I do see Erik Ten Hag as a cross between Cruyff and Ancelotti
“We wouldn’t know how Southgate would perform in the league?”
I mean if only he’d managed at club level in the past so we could see what happens…
Whilst I doubt too much, it’s certain he has evolved somewhat from what he was like in 2009, not to mention football evolving as a whole with pep in the prem

Southgate wouldn't get the Burnley job let alone the United one.
Are people still pretending this media made bollocks is a thing?
What a waste of your time.
Ruthless Southgate retired Rooney??? Rooney asked Southgate not to play him! Southgate simply cant manage United. He will fail, spectacularly.
I actually think Southgate to Man City makes sense! Pep's team has dropped off this season, which suggests that a cultural reboot is required!!
Or, Chelsea should employ Southgate, who is very good with a young team.
And Mainoo should not be selected for the England team.
Yes, I am a non-English United fan lol...
I would love to see united get buried deeper and what this england team can do with a real manager, so sounds great
This is the most diabolical, stupid and media generated take I have ever seen on Manchester United.
No one wants this, and everyone can see it’s a terrible idea.
Personally I can only stand watching Southgate Terror-Ball once ever couple of years.
Southgate is an outstanding manager. He did brilliantly to relegate Boro, and hopefully, he does the same with Man Utd.
Rooney said in the interview with Andy Cole on the Overlap like 3 days ago that he withdrew himself from the England side because he saw all these younger player who needed a shot at international football. Southgate did not make the decision to drop him!
He did drop him and then Rooney retired
I like it when either Jon or JJ drops the pen, funny surprise faces all around 😂
I think 100% of all other teams fans wants Sourhgate join Ineos forever 🎉 but also Ten Hag would be enough to keep Manchester United down. By the way...a good work, mates. Gareth will surely appreciate your efforts!
if the Glazer want united to play Bristol City, Hull City and Portsmouth in 2025 then getting Southgate will be a great idea
its a good way to get man utd relegated if that is what the glazers want.

*Answer to the question:*
NO.
Gareth Southgate does NOT makes sense at the MUFC.
They should bring Tuchel and let him work.
Or Luis Enrique if he truly leaves PSG, then just sign him for years and open the wallet; and watch the trophies come.
Why so Tuchel can be there for 3 years and fall out with everyone including the janitors?
Southgate pragmatism will work better with current and upcoming United players

Ah yes tuchel fresh from failing to make a team play that's much better than United or Luis Enrique who played a 424 away to Newcastle in champions league tactical genius lol
My problem with Tuchel is that he seems to be a Cup coach. He never does well in leagues, idk why. Even with good teams .

As an Arsenal fan I approve of Southgate to Yanited.
Southgate works better in International tournaments. He’s a kinetic manager, similar to Ole. He lacks in actual tactics. He succeeds going further in tournaments where all the teams haven’t had years of playing and training together week in week out. Whenever he comes up against proper tactics and better coached team, he crumbles. He wouldn’t get as far in a long season across multiple comps over 60+ games.
The list of managers having Jose Mourinho on it? *chef's kiss*
According to Rooney he told Southgate to not pick him because he wasn't a starter at utd. It didn't make sense that he would captain England while unable to break into the starting 11 at club level. It wasn't a ruthless/authoritative decision by Southgate 😂
Mainoo is not small. He’s 6 foot tall. Look at any picture of him with Maguire. He confirmed it himself a couple days ago as well

@@elingrome5853 yeah it's an outdated measurement

Can we get an analysis report of why Bayer Leverkusen always seem to score in the stoppage time ? They scored in 16/17 matches out of 50
Real Madrid have the majority of the ball in most games they play. Man United play 28 games a season against non "Big 6" teams. Being able to consistently beat the "others" is how the key to winning any league.
WHY OH WHY, is this question still being debated? I don't want Southgate anywhere near my club. He should think about his wellbeing and his mental health, and just say NO.. Like you should always say to drugs. NO...
I wish it happens just for the banter 😂
Mainoo isn’t actually 5’9 though, if you look at him next to other players who we know are fairly tall, he’s not that much shorter than them
He’s grown a fair bit in the last couple of years, I think that metric is outdated

Why not Trent as the 3rd midfielder? Have him drift wider in late build up and have sake drift in?
can you do a video on why teams are going for younger managers?
Them having Rashford, Maguire and Shaw and Southgate being able to get a tune out of them has to be a factor in this but I can't see it personally
I hope he goes to Man U. Him leaving the English team and finally giving all those talented players a chance at international success would be a blessing, he clearly has not been up to the task. This may sound negative, I genuinely like Southgate, I just think he’s proved inept at bringing success for the national team so let someone else have a go.

Great video as always, but I just wanna clear up that Real Madrid are on track for 97 points (which is crazy), so I don’t think they’re doing well because Barcelona dropped off. An amazing league performance this year
Rooney openly talks about how he had to convince GS to stop selecting him. Better Research Expected from Tifo bois
If you want to turn Utd into the most boring risk averse team in the prem then Southgate would be ideal.
Southgate has inherited an absolutely incredible bunch of talent and won absolutely nothing. Being consistently out managed by others like Mancini
Rooney has said on The Overlap that he told Southgate not to call him up because he didn't think he was good enough anymore, so I don't think you can call it a brave decision from Southgate..
All cliched jokes aside, IF he wins the Euros his reputation will be transformed.
Very funny.
He won’t win the Euros, semi finalists maybe. Which with this English squad is the reason why Southgate is objectively not a good manager
Even if he does, doesn't change the fact in club football without mega money and an amazing squad, gis tactics would get exposed and he'd take most sides down or get sacked
The Athletic has been on the decline, but man this has to be a new low for them.
I would put Cole in the number 10 role as a second striker (with mainoo as his backup), belligham in advanced 8, and rice defensive 8
Let me tell you why pep won everywhere

Southgate is decent and way better than his predecessors, but he is not a World cup winning manager. And neither is he going to when he would go to United.
You guys have a world-class squad. Only the equivalent world class manager is missing.
for an Argentinian left back, Alex knows a lot about England and their tactics. impressive
Do a video explaining what does it take to win the premiere League in this City era, both Liverpool and Arsenal couldn't do it despite having outstanding seasons
What Analysis could point you to France, Germany and Portugal being defensively solid first type teams? Why wasn't Southgate looking at Brazil in 02 or France in 98? The quality of team we have is much more similar to those than Greece. Also Spain in 2010/12 were possibly the most dominant national team side ever. They barely conceded whilst playing heavily possession oriented football. Of which, we have Foden, Bellingham, Rice, Stones, Walker, Kane and saka to name a few who all play similar possession based systems. None of those teams play 5 at the back or have two completely defensive midfielders, so why are England?
Sounds like he’d be a better Sporting Director than club manager
Mikel Arteta (who has never won the Premier League) is the “gold standard” on how to win the Premier League? 🤔
Umm. As pointed out by the man himself. Kobbie Mainoo is not 5”9
