The GENIUS Way Man United Just Beat Man City For The FA Cup

- Despite being written off after a disappointing season, Manchester United didn't just beat City in the FA Cup final, they did so brilliantly. And while his time in at the helm might soon be brought to an end, it was a tactical masterplan from Erik Ten Hag that got the better of Pep Guardiola at seemingly every turn. Adam Clery takes a look at the Dutchman's ingenuity and explains how he pulled off one of the shocks of the season.

I've seen many pundits calling it a bad day at work for Man City and giving man United zero credit which is very misleading.
Man city where abit leggy to be honest but man utd really played well and had a good strategy
That's because they're fully aware that no matter how good United's tactics were, City on their best day would have ran all over them. And that holds more weight to them, cos it's not the first time United have been this good. But it's one of the first times City have been that bad.
@@MCFC-OK1416💀cope harder
@@MCFC-OK1416you couldn’t play the way you wanted to play because of our tactics that’s why you couldn’t run all over us.
@@mcnally1456 I don’t wanna shit on United, I’m not in the mood rn. But be real, City weren’t there mentally. They just won their 4th PL and their only other real interest would have potentially been the CL (but no…). United were simply hungrier for this one. For City it was like “yeah whatever, the season is already over, when am I getting my next drink?”.
"the second goal is rightly going to be remembered for that beautiful pass from Bruno Fernandes, and the fact that Kobbie Mainoo became the first teenager to score in an FA Cup Final since Garnacho had done it 10 minutes earlier" :D
Yea, that was really well done. :)
😂😂😂
Don’t forget Rashford’s amazing pass
@@rgcol that was my favourite part!
Ronaldo scored as a teenager against millwall in the fa cup final.
I think this also shows why the injuries hurt United so much this season. They have almost never played with Martinez Varane as their centerback pairing.
It's like having Arsenal play without Saliba and Gabriel for the majority of the season. You can't just compare teams and say ''they had injuries too'', because it's way more nuanced. Where are the injuries exactly? United still played without an actual left-back this game.
You said it. People only compare the no. of injuries but "who is injured" matters more than that. The Saliba and Gabriel example you gave should be enough for people to understand how much changes and comprises you have to make.
And didn't Arsenal derail last season because Saliba got injured!? He is the only Arsenal outfield player this season to play all minutes in PL and Arsenal fought till the final day. Idk why people don't understand this and go further in discrediting the manager.
@BIazy your brain clearly not working
@BIazyOnana has been good since the champions league mistakes. Mount can't be blamed for injury, it's not like any player intentionally injures themselves. Shaw is arguably the best lb in the league when fit. And Rashford slump in form correlates with Shaw's absence due to his style of play. If we had Varane and Martinez we'd be way ahead. Injuries let us down, not the manager
@@user-ig1ps2mr2r because people don't want to hear or accept excuses. Also, they already hate the club and/or the manager so will not let an opportunity to lambast him go begging
Martinez played 14 games this season, that's more than James and Nkunku and only 2 fewer than Chilwell. That's the new striker, the captain and the most expensive defender for Chelsea. Haven't seen many defending Chelsea's season with they had injuries.
"mainoo became the first teenager to score in a FA Cup final.. Since Garnacho had done it 10 mins earlier"
Brilliant 😂😂🙌🏽
🤣🤣🤣 genius
I am ecstatic at that win, but I also feel vindication.
Because I believe Ten Hag had the exact same plan 12 months ago, in the last FA Cup final, but when we conceded a stupid goal less than a minute into the game, the whole plan of patiently stopping City goes out the window, they’re happy to just hold the ball and see the game out with a 1-0 lead, United had to gamble and press which played into City’s hands.
But this time, United got a bit of luck, they were much more stable, there were no silly errors, and United could just be patient and force City to try and win the game. Played into United’s hands, and I know people will say City were unlucky not to score from Haaland’s shot hitting the bar, or Alvarez’s near miss. But United were unlucky to have their goal ruled out and there were many times where United’s press was a fraction of a second too slow for City and they just marginally escaped a catastrophe.
Up the fucking reds
Why would people say haaland was unlucky? He missed? That's missing not luck
Yes he had the same plan last fa cup final and even before in derby where he beat city 3-2 with Fred being the workhorse. It's basically when his players stick to his plan when his teams neutralize and counter them.
United leveled that game btw...
The game should have end 3-1 if Bruno learn to make easy and obvious passes
Not every pass need to be witty, pretty and complicated. He should played McTominay in.
Hojloud turn and control dribbling Alvarez was beautiful
Every ManU player played that match like they where from America and not Europe, with skills, individuality and techniques, while City play their boring football
100% agree with what u say. Would have wished ManU could attack with more identity rather than relying on counterattack and pumping long balls. Hopefully they can build on it next seasoning.
this is probably the 10th analysis video i'm watching the match and i love it
Better than Atlantis Football's video by far
@@Mopark25
Agreed. I don't understand his obsession with Di Zerbi. He may be a good coach but it takes more than that to manage a club like united with high ego players.
Why didn't Bayern go for him? Who knows .
It's been the best breakdown thus far.
Waiting on @FootyWithAnEdge
Don't watch it if you don't want to there's no need for your negative sarcasm!
As a Man United fan. Honestly with all the crap we have endured this season. This game, this win, was a very special one. I want to give very special praise to a couple of players who could have flopped in this game but did not.
1. Rasmus Hoiljund. This guy is going to be our striker for the next decade. We just need to find him. This kid scored a few goals across the season living on scraps. He gets benched despite being the only fit striker at the club. Yet he does not moan or grumble. When he got on, he did exactly what the team needed. Chasing down lost causes, fighting for every ball, even winning 2 free kicks in dangerous areas. We need to support his growth next season. Still he needs a mature world class striker to rotate with which will give him time develop.
2. Sofiyan Amrabat. This guy just showed the United transfer window department how important it is to get a young, defensive midfielder who is inherently calm and responsible. The second goal was scored only because of him. No disrespect to Casemiro but if it was the Brazilian, he would not have taken those extra touches to help his team get into position while dragging other players towards him. The Morrocan still isn't the player I would go for as a permanent transfer as he can be a little clunky on the turn and not as press-resistant, however in this game, I felt apart from a couple of shaky moments, he was amazing; both in possession and defensively.
3. Marcus Rashford. The guy could have sulked and fail to turn up considering the fact that he did not make it to the England national team for the Euros. (Frankly I actually think it would be a blessing in disguise for him as he needs a good full off-season break.) I suspect that he was injured during this final in the early stages of the game but he stayed on. I say this because in the early stages he ran hard, press aggressively but after that he kinda was a little cautious in everything he did so I suspect he got injured. Still he played unselfishly for the final and set up the 2nd goal. I hope next season he will regain his form.
You forgot to give credit to the tactical genius behind this plan?
Thank you Erik Ten Hag
I noticed that too, he didn't seem to run as he usually does, he seemed slower than he really is. Taking no credit from Walker as he's an elite RB.
The video already talked about ETH and obviously ETH was the mastermind, but I wanted to focus on players who may not get the due praise.
Agreed, rashford's hate is out of pocket. I'm sure he'll be back next season
@@lucasd3658 I want to believe that too but if the media keeps abusing Man United for being Man United, shit will hit the fan very fast
A Ten Hag masterpiece, I hope we keep him.
Welcome to darkage
I was saying the same thing after we lost 7-0 to Liverpool.
Always back the manager. Always
He played the long con this season to lure City into a false sense of security lol.
So does the rest of the league hope yous keep him 😂😂😂

Amrabat played one of his best games as well!! Great video, mate!
Proper pitbull!
Love it that you recognise the Wan bissaka contribution. For me he is a wildcard 🃏.
A lot of analysts have really overlooked the role AWB played in the second goal. That run he made was one of the most important moves that led to that goal. He created space for AG17 to lay that pass with little to do to Bruno.
True WanB run took one defender with him creating room for Bruno no look pass to that first teenager
This channel has changed the way I watch games. I love looking for the tactics and trying to predict what Adam will say
I was waiting the whole day for this video.
Thanks for providing it and hope you have some time off as well!
Check out football made simple
It's also a good channel for breaking down match tactics
The pass highlighted at 10:57 is not on rashfords weaker foot. It's on his strong right foot which he hits across for a lovely pinged switch pass. It's definitely not on his weaker foot lol. If he made a pass like that on his weaker foot, that would have been ridiculously amazing 😂😂
I think he meant from City players perspective not closing him down. They didn't expect him to cut back onto right and ping it.
He didn't say it was done with his weaker foot...he said 'When it gets out to Rashford, this ball across the pitch, on his weaker foot, is just not on in a million years'
0:49 this guy just chat shhiiii all the time, Was liverpool in the semifinals not a big game? Did he not get it right then? The semifinals was last month that's not a "very longtime" is it? Was Newcastle not a big game? Did he not get it right then? Your analysis is so agenda driven, hard to take anything you say seriously

Personally I'm one for giving the manager time, regardless of they're winning or losing. Yeah we're a big club we need to win, but sacking managers ever few seasons only for the players to learn new tactics with each manger. Players need the consistency
I don't see any style of play adapted. If this summer can get 1 suitable manager for the club development, Ten Hag can go elsewhere.
@@iantan232hard to implement a style of play when you have a different squad in training every week because of injuries. he had a style of play last season, with a full squad and finished 3rd and won a trophy. he’s a good manager. he needs another season with a proper squad and guarantee we’re competing for the league again and winning trophies in the a year or two
@@iantan232 I see you are just here to repeat hateful pundit's useless talking points
This might be outcome based, but I honestly think that performance alone proves that Erik ten Hag should have another season with United. His squad has been ravaged by injuries all season, I think it would have gone very differently even if just Martinez and Varane had been available for most of the games. Ten Hag can definitely build something here if he's given the time.
That sure was a game I haven't seen in a long time!!
Man United convincingly beating City. What a delight!!
Excellent game to watch!
I think Onana should have saved that shot, but other than that United were almost faultless.
Onana is a terrible keeper
I agree makes far to many blunders also he seems to panic way to much when he's given the ball especially when the Opposition are going at him many goalkeepers do some are great at shownig no hesitation Onana seems to do it all the time.@@fintanduffyable
I think everyone, including Onama, especially Onana, knows that he should have saved that shot.
True but garnacho should have stopped doku shooting on his right.
@@OfficialELTB I agree with that.
Been a fan for well over 20 years, through some amazing times, but this victory is right up there with the best feelings of all
What amazed me more thab anything in yesterday performance was from Man Utd after watching this analysis, it was not just Utd rode their luck to their win (in most cases when we won against them and yes Haaland hit the post and we got a break from their defender), it was just City were never close to scoring or a threat to Utd. KDB substitution says all about it. City were a better team in possession and no ever team in history will have more possession than them but Utd were just a better team in all other areas. TenHag is the man.
If you can reduce City to needing moments of magic to score then you've done a fantastic job already. Alvarez should've scored his chance though, Amrabat fell asleep for that
@@Mopark25 you're right. Alvarez had a great chance. That was a simple pass that sliced through the defence. It was a perfect execution my Utd team and in the second half, it was all about Utd hanging on, containing City and the difference to the last year final was Utd had a better bench with options even though not match fit. Ramas simply coming on to teplace Rashford says it all. Ramas was causing problems every time we went long. City couldn't come out all out.
_Utd were just a better team in all other areas._

New[ish] to the channel. Great video! I haven't stopped watching ANYTHING related to yesterdays win! This is probably going to be the icing on the cake. Yesterday was amazing! I was still on the fence after the 1st goal due to how it happened, but after Mainoo scored, man I tell you what, I was screaming. When that final whistle blew, I looked like Rashford, truly brought a tear to my eye. I have wanted nothing but success for ETH and after hearing all the talk about him being sacked, I was kind of sad. You can see the look in his face, he didn't do this for himself, he did it for them, he did it for us!! He deserves to be our manager regardless what people think. We knocked out Liverpool on the way to nearly CLEANSHEET MANCHESTER CITY in a FA Cup final, if you need to let that sink in then fine, but I watched that game yesterday, forget what people are saying, haters will hate. Nobody wants to accept the fact that they just beat the 4 TIME PREMIER LEAGUE champions at Wembley for a trophy with relative ease. This summer couldn't have started off better, now hopefully I hear news of ETH staying!! Glory Glory Man United!!
So glad it was you that did this breakdown, masterful performance by all involved yesterday, Genius planning and forethought from Erik ten Hag
and a fantastic display of tactical football, designed to win a game against the best in the country, and pulled it off too?
Erik has to be given the next season at a bare minimum, and another 3yrs if I had my way
It was a great piece of management because he used this same system against Newcastle and Brighton. The preparation for the Final at the forefront of his mind while changing things after the 4-0 loss. It's no coincidence we didn't have Bruno against Palace and then Martinez comes back with Varane and we win 3 games in a row against 2 good teams and the no. 1 team in the country.
Scholes did say earlier on in the season that man utd is still looking like a cup team. It turns out he wasn’t far from the truth.
Thank you for being truthful and not being biased. I have seen some so-called tactical analysts just being biased and not giving Erik ten hag credit, but you just gave it truly as it should.
I'm old school kick and rush, hit the big man, knock it in to channels, win the second ball, but that was a great explanation for me of how the modern game works.

Excellent. I love these video breakdowns. Not a Man U fan but congrats to them and to Ten Hag for a match very well played.
Nah sorry it wasn't bissaka at fault for that goal, he pocketed him that much he went inside instead of running into that dead end and someone else gave him space.
Thanks Adam - yes, when I watched the game it was so obvious that United were forcing City into nothing passes and safe positions - that stat on Haaland is unbelievable and yet he almost scored - but tactically, yes, Pep was sunk by TH BUT the execution had to be very precise which thankfully it was...
Brilliant analysis, mate! Thank God for TH-cam, otherwise if I had to rely on the mainstream media, I'd be waiting forever to watch a video like this.
The wing spaces are as covered as old Trafford's roof had me rolling. Low blow tho 😂😂😂😂
Great analysis. The "withdrawn 4-2-4" was a work of genius which, as you say, stopped City in the central areas. But I think one thing you missed was how this stopped Rodri performing for pretty much the whole game. This is a guy who had not lost in 90 mins for over a year. McTominay followed him everywhere - he probably sat beside him on the bus back to Manchester.
Rodri dictates their play and United did not let him settle. He is usually able to break the lines in midfield in the W that you pointed out. However, when that is suffocated, Rodri is usually excellent at spreading the ball out wide to create space yet McSauce (and at times Bruno) did not allow him to do this well as he had little time to set himself, which is another reason City could not exploit the space out wide effectively. When Doku started the chaos on the left, the whole United side began to drift over to that side but McTominay stuck diligently to his task. The one time Rodri found space, he broke the lines when it was Mainoo who pressed him (meaning United were out of shape) and he then found Foden in a pocket to then set up that Alvarez chance.
After that miss, United seemed to recalibrate to the City changes and did not look threatened again until Onana made that howler.
Obviously it is not as simplistic as "Stop Rodri, you stop City" but if you can stop Rodri, you stop City...
People doubting ETH‘s capabilities not just because he won the FA cup final indeed know absolutely nothing about football. The journalists including former players hosting popular shows are on top of that pile. It took Klopp seasons before Liverpool could win anything and because they were at their lowest bottom, there were no expectations. But one look at the journey of what he was building and then it was realised what he was truly creating.
ETH has more trophies in his first two season than Klopp in his, and also has more trophies than Klopp since he came to United.
I'm not gonna lie, you had me in the first half. The mainoo being the first teenager to score in an FA Cup final since....
The analysis was done very well! Enjoyed it
A fantastic analysis. Great work👍
You’re one of my best football tactics breakdown channel together with “football made simple” well done
Rashford's pass across the field in the build-up to the second goal is among the most memorable. The fact that he even dared to do so, in a pressure-cooker match with the stakes so high says a lot about his confidence. It could easily have gone out and leading to a City throw-in. I hope he'll stay on at United, and for the team to get back to where they should be - serious league title contenders, at least. Like what Arsenal and Liverpool have been this season.
Love your videos. Thank you for making them

Would be disastrous if they sack ten haag
This is very fair analysis of the game.
This season couldn't build on the last because the two CBs that was crucial to their defense last season was injured.
Ten Hag got both Martinez & Varane back in this game, and they won the cup.
Ten Hag's game tends to also build from the back. When Martinez was out, he had Shaw to cover last season. He had neither of them this season, and that also affect the team in attack.
Pep sum it up perfectly in post match interview that Martinez was making a massive difference in this game with his defense splitting passes...
The kobbie goal is very much similar to the goal kobbie's scored against new castle, it seeems as if it was thought through and practiced many times by united.
I found that fascinating. This is from a chap who enjoys the game, but absolutely couldn't have a conversation about the actual game and get in a discussion., if that makes sense. Individual performances or plays yes, like Carlos years ago, or Zidane or Zico. I just enjoy the game.
You helped me understand far more, so a big thank you.

Very good analysis and very well visualized. Thank you!
I have seen tons of this videos for FA cup final match analysis. This one hands down the best.
Brilliant analysis, mate, and so well presented.
Wow loved that analysis, clear, insightful and delightful. Thanks
Something I have seen nobody say is that Diogo Dalot needs credit for absolutely man marking Bernardo completely out of the game. Garnacho also made Gvardiol his btch the whole game, the first goal was just the start. AWB put up a good fight against Doku, but ultimately lost that battle as he was allowed to put one in.
Gvardiol did his job vs Garnacho and returned the ball like trained for a counterattack. Ortega fucked up.
@utvara1 Gvardiol was getting exploited the whole game.
Doku's goal was not on Wan Bissaka, Garnacho was the one Defending Doku when he took the shot, watch the replay
Through out the match he didn't play even 1 shot when Wan Bissaka was on him
Well, in that exact moment, there was also Bernardo Silva sneaking on the left wing. AWB just couldn't rush to Doku, because e would 100% pass to Bernardo and pretty much leaving him free
Yeah Dalot deserves a lot of respect. They (City) pretty much gave up attacking over the right for much of the game other then the Alvarez chance. And that wasn't on him.
So, Man united just pull up the same plan as Madrid in the semi at the Etihad, but cherry on the cake here, they even had the chance the score.
I just can't stop dreaming about how bright the future will be if united start playing this way in all their match, it makes total sense and UNITED could score alot of goals with this formation,
They just need to master this tactics and start gaining possession from these and understanding their movement.
Great analysis as ever Adam!

Nice one Adam. We could do with your unique analytical skills in the mainstream arena. Laughing and learning simultaneously watching your content does not happen when I watch MOTD. Congrats 👏

I’ve been saying for the entire season that getting rid of ETH would be so stupid considering we can have our worst season yet he still brought home a cup. The injuries and poor performances of guys like Rashford and Casemiro stifled him. Nobody else who is available is going to do anything with this club
First video of yours I've ever watched. That was insanely informative!.. subscription added! Lol
We were so lucky that we had the perfect counter weapon for Man City's Doku.. Wan Bissaka.. undoubtedly the best 1v1 defender on that pitch.. if it was Dalot.. the result would have been different.. that's why AWB is a good back up right back to keep.. definitely when we require a specialist to nerf the opposition players.. like he has done to Sterling, Salah, Mahrez, now Doku.. ( btw that goal was due to Onana's mistake and the midfielders not closing down Doku quickly)..
Naah, Liverpool have one of the worst 1vs1 defenders in Trent and they still manage to go toe to toe with City. Another example is Carvajal at Real Madrid.
You have to look at the bigger picture and have an overall system and tactics, not just keep a player that is good two or three games a season to block a pacey winger.
AWB can not cross, for example one of our goals came from an amazing cross from Dalot. You need players with vision and football IQ they will bring far more to the team than someone that can only defend. And on top of all AWB great defending skills we still conceded from Doku on that exact right hand side. We have to have a winner mentality and play not wind not play not to lose.

ETH deserves to stay. Yes, we finished low in the league but we had a lot of injuries. Imagine if only Varane and Martinez hadn’t been injured, our season would’ve been completely different.
Try doing this on Football Manager! When De Brunye was subbed, I knew we were doing something very right.

United had the most injuries of any other team this season and due to that, they had to have a back four that had been changed around 19 times throughout the season and casuals think this has no impact on their finishing place. Incredible really. Too many people play fifa these days and get in confused with real life.
