Jamie Carragher, the former Liverpool and England international centre-back who was part of the squad for the 2004 tournament, makes his picks using Telegraph Sport's interactive predictor.
Two years ago Carragher successfully predicted Argentina would win the 2022 World Cup - has he identified the eventual winner again this time around? He has England reaching the latter stages in Germany...

Germany just needs to get past the group stage… And with their group it shouldn’t be too hard to get second behind Switzerland.

Not really sure on what basis people are expecting pundits to predict Croatia and Italy going deep in the tournament. There is nothing to suggest that.
For me as a Dutch citizen, i will never ever again speak out the name of Portugal if we lose to them AGAIN in a tournament. It will be The-country-that-must-not-be-named from that moment on. No more holidays in the Algarve. No more piripiri or pastel de nata. It will be all over.

As a romanian, truly wish all the good all the other nations. I am so happy my country gets to play in such a prestigious tournament again after many years, maybe for some countries it is common to qualify but here even when we qualified to the EUROs it was a national holiday.

Carraghers logic is flawed.. if Italy are in a tough group and they all take points off each other they'll have more points than the other 3rd place finishers as they would have lost a couple of games having very few points
I think he means there will be closer games, therefore more draws and "points dropped" as each game distributes 2 points instead of 3
Taking points of each other can also mean a lot of draws too. 2010, Italy finished bottom of the group with like 2 points. New Zealand actually finished 3rd and the only team in that world cup undefeated on 3 points (Spain lost to Switzerland in the group stage).

The correct way to predict which 2 third placers will miss out is to look at the groups with the most even 2-4 placed teams. They are the most likely to have a third placer with just 1 or 2 points. The groups where 1 team is obviously the whipping boy (on paper) will more likely have third place teams on 3 points.
I think group A, C and E are the most evenly matched below the best team, and it's there we'll find the third placers who don't make it through.

Actually feel people overrate France's squad. Genuinely believe Germany's is better. Their midfield with the likes of Kroos, Gundogan, Wirtz, Musiala is miles better than the French one. They also have some really good defenders with the likes of Rudiger and Schlotterbeck and still a very potent attack.
The thing is that during the last World Cup, they had so much injuries that their roster didn't look that amazing at all, but... They still made it to the final.
And that's the France of Didier Deschamps. Not the best players they could align on the pitch, not the most beautiful playstyle at all, but damn it, they're just so good at the end.

Tournaments are never predictable, well apart from us not winning it. I wouldn't be surprised to see a dark horse reach the semis, Denmark in 2020, Wales in 2016, Turkey in 2008 etc. No one predicted those.

Italy will be good again. It helps that they really concentrate all their efforts on the Euros and choose to take time off during World Cups.
As a french fan, i can confirm Germany are the favourites. They've got a creative midfield, aggressive defence, they are playing home and they clearly want to be back at international stage. England have a strong attack but badly coached, Spain team is still a bit green, Italy is not in their best generation, Portugal have great talents but lack collective. France is ? regarding last lack of form, but experience is here.
As an german i fear to,play against france, because they are in my oppinion the strongest team and they played in the WM Finale, where germany lost their group so bad.
To only think I belive now more tomgermany is because the comeback of Kroos and I think we have now one of the best nation team coach and dont forget Mussiala and Wirtz very kreative player.

The problem with England is that the players are drawn from too many league teams. Yes, they might all be good players for their clubs, but the defenders don't play for the same club as each other, or the goalkeeper, the midfielders don't play for the same club as each other and the forwards are also drawn from different clubs. That causes communication problems, which can't all be resolved by practising in training and by playing friendlies. That bond comes from many hours of playing competitive games with each other. The Premier League may be touted as 'the best league in Europe', attracting overseas players to it, but this is at the expense of being able to form an England team that works well.
Foorball is about balance. England's defence is terrible.
I like Italy not being considered at all and having a sort of underdog status. I think we are better than what people think. But there's no doubt that, on paper, there's about 4 teams (easily) that are better than us.

Germany gonna win the Euros for Kroos. They have two absolute gems in Wirtz and Musiala, plus the home advantage. France or Portugal should make the final.

There’s a clear hole in the reasoning behind leaving italy out, if first and second drop more points than in other groups that means there are more ponits to pick up by third hence being one pf the strongest third places, as in other groups first and second won’t be dropping points

Maignan has been bad lately, Lucas Hernandez injured, Tchouameni injured, Giroud can't play 90 minutes, Mbappé didn't train hard for the all season, Dembelé can't score..., Coman injured, Upamecano played half the season, etc...

I would love to see us in the semi but it's not our best moment, Spalletti didn't have so much time to experiment and create his team and we lost some key players during the season for many reasons (Udogie injured, Tonali banned, Verratti not anymore in Europe, Immobile in his worst season ever, etc.). It's always the same, they write us off and then we do something special, nevermind 2020, when we got to the final in 2012, it was with one of the weakest squads we have ever taken to a tournament. Between 2008 and 2016, we were nowhere and we still made it to three quarter finals and 1 final. OK, so we missed the last two world cups... didn't see England or Spain winning them whilst we were gone...

Then a few of younger players fluffed their penalties. Italians are street wise and grind out wins in tournaments hence they have pedigree and self belief. When England win a tournament I guarantee that will change everything and we will go on to be dominant like we are in lots of other sports relative to our size.

I am not sure is it posible, but if there is way that 1st, 2nd and 3rd team from same group, could go to semi final i think it would be this Euro. The French side lacks top-press, have become pretty top-heavy quality-wise, and don't look as strong as they did a few years back. Saliba will definitely play, he's their clear number 1 centre-back. If they get some injuries they lack serious options in many positions, except on the wings. They need Mbappé as much as England need Kane or Bellingham. I think they could win, but they're not the favorites. I'd put England, France, Germany and Portugal in the same bracket in terms of squad quality and depth.
