i disagree with a couple selections but overall southgate did a really good job, he's finally picking based of form and not reputation

As a Liverpool fan I love Quansah so much, but I feel that he needs a few more years before he starts playing in proper international tournaments. But he is the future of the England backline.
Yeah totally agree.
Him and big jarrad at the back, quality that
I think he's been brought into this for exposure in a full national setup. He won't go to the Euros and that's fine, it's good experience nonetheless.
Branthwaite x Quansah 2026 World Cup cb partnership. We WILL be there…
@@xauloonew wonder kids may spawn outta nowhere 😂😂
As a Milan fan, I sort of understand why Tomori doesn't get the call but even at the friendlies ? Issue is that if he were in the premier league with his performances, he would be in the squad. The manager doesn't know other leagues exist. He even get a call when he was defender of the season 2 years ago...
Which is weird. He can send one his scouts to watch him in Italy. (He should also be scouting dual nationals in seria a..)
Is he not injured

Exactly the same picking idea
Hahahahaha palace fans after playing good football for two months thinking all their players should be in is just cringe. How you going to leave Marc Guehi in after playing no football. It’s comical
@@papihuge6702 played 25 games isn't playing no football
The fact is, England have the highest scoring winger in premier league history if you exclude penalties, the second highest scorer for England of the players today, the highest assist provider, the player who almost single handedly dragged England to their first final in over half a century, the most reliable England player in high stake competition games, and so clearly most dangerous attacker in English football today not in the squad let alone the team. The idea any team can succeed to win a competition without a player that can deliver so much reliably to their game and be so influential to a teams success whether the rest of the team do not perform so well or not is called wishful thinking. We've seen Southgate take risks in finals and failed at every turn. He is unable to make constructive risks and is strongest when he uses common sense. Common sense would tell you Jude Belligham has excelled partnering Vinicias Junior at Real Madrid winning the Spanish League and in the final of the Champions League which should be amazing for England as England have a similar player to Vinicias Junior in the name of Raheem Sterling in the England team meaning they can understand each other very quickly and form an equally powerful partnership for the England attack. This is common sense. But what does he do? He takes Sterling out of the team depriving England of that obvious lethal attacking partnership. Common sense would tell you that with England getting to a final with Sterling as the driving force giving defenders nightmares on one wing and Saka still developing on the other, when Saka finally develops as he has today and so much better than that final and able to give defenders nightmares like Sterling, England with these two wingers would be giving defenders sleepless nights on both wings and be even more lethal than when getting to that final, so you play them both again now as a bigger threat than before. This again is common sense. But no, Southgate has decided to not play Sterling and play a lesser threat that has achieved nothing, but some good games for an average club for one season and has no experience of high stakes competition, or an alternative that has played for England, but achieved nothing special when playing for England and is not even the first choice for his club team. It's astonishing stuff. As for Palmer, a player that has scored an average number of goals in open play scoring 10 penalties he will not take for England to push up his stats, but more importantly failed to make the Man City team and was then sold, because although he was known by Man City to score goals is too much of a defensive liability to have in a team that wants to win things or be a top team, why in the world would a manager with any sense ignore these facts and like a novice want to consider putting him in his team just because pundits, commentators and the media choose to ignore the obvious facts and claim the manager who sold him has made a mistake despite the fact this manager is winning everything under the sun. Palmer does not understand defense, does not participate in defensive responsibilities, does not know how to balance defensive and offensive responsibilities and has no interest in understanding or participating in defensive responsibilities at a time in football when all 11 players have offensive responsibilities and all 11 players have defensive responsibilities and the team least efficient at utilising all 11 players for these offensive and defensive objectives loses. That is modern football and what is understood by all the top teams in league and international football as necessary to win competitions or leagues. But Southgate obviously thinks he is the exception and wishful thinking will get him over the line. Without Raheem Sterling in the team, I predict England will be knocked out of the competition in the Quarter finals at these Euros as we saw proved when Sterling did not play in the last World Cup, mark my words, so I won't even bother watching the games managed by stupidity that makes no sense forced on the manager by pressure from the media. Wishful thinking gets you nowhere. Peace and love
The linkup on the right side with Walker, Trent in the pivot and Saka on the wing was crazy in the friendlies last summer. Southgate digging his own grave if Gallagher or Mainoo starts in the pivot next to rice instead of Trent
"Pivot"
I wouldn't say so to be honest
Trent offers a skill set very similar to what Rice does in that he's mainly a long passer of the ball, both have excellent technique in the pass and I'll give them that; but Mainoo offers something completely unique to this team, I'd say he's one of only a handful of players worldwide with the sort of press resistance he's got and the only one in England with that level of composure and dribbling ability who can play so deep - impossible to win the ball off him but he doesn't progress the ball as well as Trent
I'd argue it really depends on what England needs in a given tactical battle

As a Liverpool fan I’d also take Wharton over Jones.
Your not a little puzzled on why he picked jones over Elliott
@@BazKepple They’re 2 different profiles lol. England don’t need more creative midfielders, they need more defensive/well rounded midfielders. Elliot is great in attack but that’s it, he’s not good enough defensively and he won’t get ahead of Saka, Foden or Palmer for his position.
@@BazKepplethere’s so much competition in Elliot’s position, he’s not a pure b2b midfielder.
@@LordHighness Elliot is literally a Palmer replica, he’s a right winger (played there for Fulham) that likes to drift into the 10 just like Palmer. If Palmer doesn’t get in then neither does elliot cause there’s 10’s and right wingers better than him. It’s really that simple, not sure what’s so hard to understand about that. Elliot lacks defensive awareness, Mainoo at least has some awareness and discipline cause again, they’re 2 completely different players. He doesn’t get in the 8 position either cause there’s Jude, Madders, and Foden… he’s also quite lightweight. I like Elliot but he’s not there yet.
@BazKepple Elliot has problem that there many players who are head of him, Palmer, Bellingham, Foden
Choosing Toney (4 goals) over Solanke (19 goals) is typical Southgate
Watkins and solanke should go also. Also where is Tyrick Mitchell or Rico Henry both actual leftbacks
Isn't Toney a PK specialist? He might be there mainly for that

@JoeThomlinson. Very well done 🤝 Best England squad review, Ive seen I view a LOT, too.
Nice to to see genuinely sensible takes on youtube based on actual evidence. Rather than clickbait bullshit, recycling the same old takes from football twitter
I agree with your omissions Joe. I suspect one of Jones and Wharton will go and their performances at the camp will determine who.
Love your take on Trent. He's such a unique footballer, noone in England can do what he does. Great excitement of him in a double pivot with Rice.
Also on Jones, don't forget he has followed the youth pathway, and won the most man of the matches in the U21 world cup win as an anchorman (i don't think the boy actually got tackled the whole tournament). This is probably the reason why he was picked
Wait is it that in England if you don’t play there you don’t exist? Is Tomori and Sancho not good enough to make this 32 man roster. With all the injuries. Crazy
Too many good wingers for Sancho to get in tbh, he’s shown how good he can be in the CL but he’s not even been all that consistent in other competitions for Dortmund. Foden, Palmer and Saka have all been far better across the whole season and Gordon, Eze and Bowen have been excellent too, although Tomori should easily be making the squad over someone like Dunk.
Sancho is not better than the wingers being taken.
The seven names: Ramsdale, Quansah, Dunk, Jones, Bowen, Grealish, Toney
Bowen!!! Surely done enough...
@@joethomlinson_ Are you gonna play him ahead of either Saka or Palmer?
I don’t think anyone would, and we need more depth in other areas.
@@J_Tevo For that same reason why would your take Maddison he wont be going i gurantee it
@@snorrzz4970 Mainly because of the role he plays.
I’d have Eze be the LW backup to Gordon (he’s played there consistently since his return), so Maddison would be the backup to Foden.
Bowen is a third place role player. I’m not against him taking Maddison’s spot, but it’s more about what is needed to fill out the squad with balance.
From your list remove Quansah and Bowen and include Shaw and Maddison
Surely if James and Chilwell are excluded why Shaw???
What about BEN WHITE
But we all know Southgate will keep Grealish, Ramsdale, Maddison and exclude Wharton, Eze, Trafford, Konsa and Guehi which I will be 😡 especially if he removes Wharton and Eze

I feel that England would actually be better off playing a back 3 for EURO 2024, considering the injuries to their best full back (mainly left back) candidates.
My current thinking is to play in Alonso's 3-4-2-1 / 3-2-4-1, where one can play both Foden and Bellingham as CAM, and Rice given freedom to roam forward.
GK: Pickford | Henderson | Trafford
RCB: Walker | Konsa | Gomez
CB: Stones | Maguire
LCB: Branthwaite | Shaw | Trippier
RCM: Trent | Gallagher
LCM: Rice | Jones
RW: Saka | Bowen
RAM: Foden | Palmer
LAM: Bellingham | Maddison
LW: Gordon | Eze
FW: Kane | Watkins
Mainoo instead of Gallagher.
I think you’ve got this perfectly correct ✅
Finally someone who didnt just write bowen off. I know he doesn't have the experience yet but thats not really on him, and since the squad came out hes been getting disrespected online as if hes not scoring (without pens) alot of goals after changing his position mid-season from winger to striker. Hope he make it and he plays, if he does next season they argue if hes not called up again. Great video
I think l agree with your choices. Solanke must feel disappointed to not make the squad when Toney did though.
Exciting being a palace fan seeing 4 players in the squad (5 if Johnstone healthy) With some saying Mitchell got snubbed too
My squad (accounting for injuries):
GK- Pickford
LB- Trippier/Gomez
LCB- Branthwaite
RCB- Stones
RB- Walker
LDM- Rice
RDM- TAA
CAM- Bellingham
LM- Foden
RM- Saka
ST- Kane

Subs: Gomez/Trippier, Maguire, Mainoo, Gallagher, Palmer, Grealish, Madison, Toney (pk reasons).
Don't forget watkins played left wing at brentford before smith turned him into a striker, so he could be deployed out on the left quite easily, I could even see a world where he plays with kane, with kane as a number 10
missing out on england's top set-piece man James Ward-Prowse but Trent and Keran can def help in that area
Very surprised that Mitchell didn’t even make the 33 with all the left back issues
Joe you didn't even mention solanke and sancho being left out😮
If the back line has been suffering with injuries, Tarkowski should have been given a chance. Man is hardly ever injured and was part of that defence with Branthwaite and Pickford

And the squad is quite young, he'd bring experience and leadership as well
As a bournemouth fan it's sad to not see solanke get the call up
Agreed!
I think I agree with most of your picks with a few exceptions; with such a notable injury list at the back, you can't afford to be short of defenders this tournament. We've got a solid upfront with much less injuries, so I would drop an extra forward to take an extra defender. Unfortunately that would be Jarrod Bowen. Fantastic season in a often lackluster West Ham team, when you've got talent such as Saka and Palmer on the right, and Kane and Watkins down the middle, there just isn't the need for him. I would then add Dier to the squad. An experienced player who's revived his career at Bayern; reignited his passion for the game, if he was to be at the Euros he'll work like an absolute dog for us.
You just cant drop Bowen for Dier. Bowen has been one of the best in the prem this year, he just pure class.
No Bowen?! What more could he do man!
Good selection overall
Good run down!
I feel like classing Trent as a midfielders was Gareths way of hiding the fact he’s only brought 1 more midfielder than he has goalkeeper to the Euros ,bet trashfords fuming, been left out for burnleys goalkeeper 😂

Well Done Sir
Curtis Jones is extremely underrated because he is overshadowed by signings Liverpool make. He's been consistent for years, personally if he got a move to club he can be the star In he's stardom will shine. Like joining a Spurs or United, his high tempo would be much appreciated by the clubs. If Palace were in Europe he'd be very good there and completely elevate the team.

Which 7 names would you cut from the squad?
I would cut more than 7 names and bring on two names which deserved to nominated. Cut: Trafford, Dunk, Quansah, Guehi, Branthwaite, Shaw (injured), Jones, Eze, Toney,
Bring on: Dier and Tomori
(I also would bring on Ben White insteed of Konsa but White wont play for England) Than i think Konsa is the best Option as a back up for Walker.
Sorry for Branthwaite and Guehi, they deserved that, but Tomori and Dier deserved a nominie in every single wolrd.
(Sorry for my english)
Trafford, Dunk, Guehi, Wharton, Grealish, Maddison, Toney
Trafford, Quansah, Guehi, Jones, Maddison & Grealish are my easy 6 that are gone.
The last one is a little harder, for me it’s between Wharton & Toney. I think I may have to go with Wharton, may just be a little too early & Toney was great in our last matches and also gives us confidence if penalties are needed.
We need the defensive cover imo due to injury issues so I’ve kept Dunk.
Dunk is another issue injury wise I wouldn’t take him over Wharton or Toney he’s gone for me I’d risk it with others plus Gomez Konsa Braithwaite is enough centre back cover we need midfield depth Wharton gives us that
Taking Toney despite the form?
The master of the dance Lord JLIngz should be in there! 😏😆
Before I watch the video. My 7 are Trafford, konza, Wharton, Bowen, Madison quansah
Jordan Pickford has not been better for England than Everton. How many times do Everton fans have to say that.
Trafford, Quansah, Jones, Bowen, Maddison, Watkins, Dunk. I don't think Grealish should be going but he will
I could really see mainoo as an 8 not a 6. His ball control is remarkable and his dribbling reminds me of zidane
Tyrick Mitchell played 37 games for Palace, England don’t have a left back issue.
If Guehi n Wharton could make it Ty should too for depth.
Feel like Alfie Daghty has gone well under the radar due to big team bias, same with Leif Davis even though it’s understandable that a player with so little experience on the big stage isn’t selected. However I do feel like both could have been in with a shout based on their seasons and the lack of inform left backs
Don’t disagree but the thing with Daughty is does anyone know who he is without the assists? Is he actually any good as a defender, Luton’s scores would say not?
Mitchell Doughty or Leif Davies Southgate has killed himself in that department he had option couldn’t care less what level they played at they was all good enough to be selected for this pre selection squad
Few points.
Firstly commendable for your positive comments about pool players. Many fans can be biased even for internationals.
Secondly, as an unbiased opinion (NI Fan) I think this is the strongest squad I have seen in my 28 years of watching football (34 years old).
3rd point. I take back what I said in point one after seeing you axed quansah and Jones 😂😂
As a portuguese i would love to know what you guys really think should be your starting XI. To right back i love Trent but i understand that in most games Kyle Walker should play but what do you do with Trent then? I dont think Maguire is a great center back, Tomori should be there, but people in England always say Maguire has to play. But the biggest problem i think is knowing what to do in front. Rice and Bellingham have to play, but Rice is not really a 6 and Jude now has to play at 10. In the harder games who do you put at 6 or at 8 to balance it out Mainoo or Gallagher? Then you have Palmer, Foden and Jude that play their best at 10 but only one can play there. If Jude plays at 8 and Rice at 6 and Foden at 10 is it really balanced enough? If Jude is at 10 where do you put Foden and do you play Palmer? Foden on the left and Saka on the right is going to work?
Right now I would go…
Pickford
Walker stones Maguire shaw
Trent rice Bellingham
Saka Kane Foden
It was never going to happen but I think Max Kilman as Wolves captain deserves a look in
Generally agree with your choices Joe, very good squad nonetheless. Eze and Wharton must go IMO, and tbh so should Trafford to get the experience (Southagte probably will take Henderson though so he still feels like the other one is there 😂)
You need Chilwell as a left back
great content as always mate!
Butland should be going over either Trafford or Henderson. He has had a great season and would be an experienced safe pair of hands as a back up.
Guehi, Shaw (likely wont be fit), Maddison, Toney, Trafford, Dunk will likely be cut.
The final spot is difficult but I imagine it will be a toss up between Jones and Wharton.
Bowen has had a great season and can play a few roles and Grealish is great at winning free kicks.
I would actually take Quansah as I think he will be the next player to play alongside Stones and could play in a game or two in the group stages.
What do you think about poch leaving Chelsea (as a Chelsea fan i am strongly against it)
Mitchell or even Leif Davies would have been good to take
Agreed Leif Davies would’ve been one for the people Im surprised with no Mitchell considering how good Palace have been and the width he’s provided for them on the left I would’ve picked him over a couple of the guys there
Not surprised they’ve missed out but Lewis hall or livramento would’ve been good full back depth
Curtis Jones, if he hadn’t been injured the last couple of months then he’d definitely be going imo. Same could be said about Maddison’s end of season. Agree with other players potentially not going. Feel bad for Tomori and Solanke not making it into this 33 man squad

I give southgate credit for this squad so far. My opinion has always been that; while chemistry and tactics are clearly important; international tournament squads primarily need to be chosen by form over all else. Doesn’t matter if you’re 17 or 37, if you’re in top form and you’re ready to win games, you’re in the squad. This is as close to that as gareth has been probably ever
