I love that the texture mattered. It was important to capture that specific authentic hair instead of dropping into something more comfortable for you. Beautiful work as always!

this LITERALLY also happened to me one time. i was working with pixel art, which is basically a digital drawing made with squares. i was trying to make a rock wall, i tried for a few days, just pushing pixels around, trying to get that "aha" moment where everything just clicks. it did eventually happen and i gotta say, your reaction was the same as mine's 😂

I love the longer videos soooo much! It gives me such a spark of joy and creativity! I love the shorts too but the longer ones is such a seratonin boost!
I love the livestreams as companionship if I am doing something and want to mostly listen and take a peek from time to time, the shorts either show me what I missed from the live or teach me something or give me lots of well needed encouragement or inspiration or something and these longer format videos is what I usually consume on youtube. Art videos where I can both watch and listen whether I'm learning or being entertained or both. If it doesn't feel right for you and your channel I'll be plenty happy from the other formats, but gosh I will soak it in for as long as you experiment with it if it is just a temporary. I appreciate you a lot for all the hard work that you do. :) Thank you Scott!

It's really encouraging to see that even expeienced artists sometimes run into problem after problem after problem. helps show that its not as much about being bad as it is literally just a part of the artistic process.
kinda reminds me of my first time trying to go to great lengths to get the perspective right in one of my favourite pieces ive ever done - it probably took like 2 hours of fiddling, and it still wasn't quite right but i was happy with it. at the time it was really frustrating, but that's just how it is huh

I actually just shared your page with two of my friends today, and one of the things I cited that I enjoyed about your content is exactly this video! Or rather, the fact that you're not afraid to show us your mistakes, frustrations, and puzzlement with art. Something that's kind of interesting to me about watching someone mess up, is that you might see something in that mistake that still inspires you to try the technique, yourself. Like, maybe someone out there saw your squiggly coloured pencil technique and thought, "THAT is what will both look good on my own project!" Maybe it's comfortable to them because it's within their skill range, or conversely, perhaps it's exciting because it's NOT something they're familiar with trying or using.
One of these days, I'd really like to try some of the techniques I've seen in your paintings, like the blotches of colour being used to emphasise shape in hair. I think that's both an intriguing and fun idea to try my hand at, as I've always drawn hair strand-by-strand, so to speak (more like strategised scribbles, with repetition being used to fill in or shade certain areas), as my mediums of choice are super fine mechanical pencils (.3mm Steadtler), and ballpoint pen for line work, and PrismaColour pencils or watercolour for colour. I only just got into watercolour a few years ago, though, so despite my decades of drawing experience, I'm a complete novice when it comes to paints... Honestly, I was kind of terrified of switching to watercolour at first, but it's been really nice to breathe with a medium I MUST be kind and forgiving to myself while using. I've used pencils my whole life, and I can mend some mighty impressive details with them... but that's the exact problem I ended up with: Too much detail made art too frustrating to be fun. So I switched to ballpoint, which I have to be forgiving to myself for mistakes and learn how to work with or around mistakes because there's no erasing, and watercolour for similar reasons, and because being new to the medium, I wouldn't be doing myself any favours by being harsh on myself.

This is what I needed today. Today, I drew 3 sketches and I was very disappointed with them. For the first one something was wrong about it but I could not put my finger on it. For the next 2 I just kinda gave up after going half the way through because I did not like where they were heading. I will try again tomorrow though. You taught me that any artist no matter the experience can struggle at times. Thank you so much.

This was so inspiring to me. I've been having issues with my art not looking the way I want it to because of the pressure of IB at school. Due to this I'm late to submitting one of my pieces because I feel like I hate everything I draw. After watching this though I felt inspired to try again, and after a bit of pushing myself I came out with what I think is one of my best pieces. I can't believe I didn't find you sooner but now that I have you bet I'm gonna watch these videos while I work on my IB art pieces!!!

This is such a wonderful video. I love that you didn’t give up and I love how many options to choose from! It’s so incredible watching an artist who has been working on the craft for decades. So much knowledge and technique and mastery to watch unfold. Also watching a true struggle and seeing options that I know others would have chosen but you knew it wasn’t the right option, not for this person’s texture, not for this shape and the way you wanted it to be. so you tried and tried and tried and again and again and again and then when you got it it felt like an explosion of energy. I have no idea how you were able to paint all of that texture in only 20 minutes but I watching the Timelapse it looked like a combo of your experience, your excitement and the total win because it you just flowed through the curves.

To get that type of hair texture from your reference photo you need to sharpen your colored pencil with a box cutter or knife so more of the waxy pigment lead will show through and hold the colored pencil almost parallel but slightly off dragging the pencil side across the paper.
Basically grazing the colored pencil on its side across the paper to emphasize the bumpy texture of the paper.
It's a technique Proko and other charcoal drawers use.
However if your using a smooth hot press paper the results may vary or basically non-existent lol

Thanks for the video. I've been drawing for a little over a year now and i haven't drawn too much lately out of a combination of frustration with feeling my technique isn't improving and just life getting in the way. Showing your frustration with getting the texture of hair correct was pretty humanising and reminded me that even experienced artists hit road blocks. Watching it all come together in your beautiful portrait with with vibrant colours really restored my enthusiasm again, so I'll definitely make time again to draw. Cheers!

A tricky thing I learned about textures and patterns not even that long ago was sometimes you need to fill a larger area before you can tell if it works, not just a little corner. Meaning, a little bit of [texture x] on a piece may look like a massive mistake, but, curiously, a whole lot of it can make it right - take it to the next level even.
Same thing applies conversely too; a good-looking texture on a small area can experience an inflating effect if continued too far.
Or not! 😄 You just have to see. Of course, experience makes it easier to spot early on if a texture is right or not.

So what I learnt from one of my old art teachers was “bleed proof” paper isn’t meant to mean it doesn’t bleed threw the paper it means the paper shodden drink the ink when you put the marker on the page if it pulls the ink out and almost makes a cloud of over draw your meant to have a protective sheet under but if your still looking for a bleed proof no leek sketch book the ohuhu one is pretty good
