  • All-You-Can-Enjoy Mandarin nostalgia! Back in 2013, Mandarin Restaurants had the honour of being featured on Undercover Boss Canada. #BTS so true, our employees believed they were being filmed for a documentary on industry training. Upon the Show finale, these great Staff uncovered their own new talents for Reality TV.
Undercover Boss Canada Episode Description: Competition is cutthroat in Canada's $23 billion restaurant industry. Tina Chiu, the Chief Operating Office of Mandarin Restaurants, is worried that the expansion of her giant all-you-can-eat Chinese buffet chain is at risk, and is prepared to radically change her appearance, to check out what's really happening in her restaurants.

I worked on both sides. That's what I thought before also. Management does things that hourly employees don't see. You think Businesses and companies will run without management?.

It’s because she is a Chinese of the old school, coming from a family which still values the Confucian work ethic & meritocracy (didn’t ancient China practice meritocracy, in that those who could pass the exams could move up the social scale?) and making sure that those who deserve it, are rewarded accordingly! And blend all this with the proverbial American “magnanimity of spirit”, and wow, you get a few employees who got their dream come true!

      Rubbish
The good ones care and get stuck in
Its there life pride and joy
      Their income too
      They dont want to fail
Thry dont want to let people down
      True there are bad
But not 1 bad all bad .....
I worked in a funiture and carpet place from school the 2 bros who owned it were so different
The older was kind and generous
He had a happy face [ Dick van Dyke like ]
The younger one mean and miserable ... his face said it all
The first christmas i didnt qualify for the bonus [ id been there only since leaving school in july ]and the wine [ too yoing ] and the younger bro completely blanked me as he handed out the gifts ....
      I wasnt too bothered
But when they all went to the party
I was sneaking out the older one called be back then he discretely and quietly tucked an envelope in my coat pocked shushed me smiled patted my back and followed the others
In the envelope was the cash equivilant to the gifts the others had got and a little card that simply said ... your hard work has not gone unnoticed
      Thank you
A gift just for you You deserve it
      Merry xmas
      Jim
It worked out about just over a months wages
I was able to buy a new bike
I always cycled to work ( 20 or so miles there n back )
so not all big bosses are mean ....
These guys only had 1 warehouse and 1 shop
Yet they were very generous to employees
      About 25 of us

Watching this CEO /COO doing undercover is really amazing. She appreciates how hard it is to be an employee. She is so generous to share her blessings to those deserve employees. She has a heart of gold. Mandarin is a great restaurant. I go to Mandarin West Hunt Club or Kanata with my families and friends at least once a week and on special occasions. I wish one of these days, i will have the opportunity to meet with this beautiful and respectable CEO. Keep it up Mandarin.

It shouldn't be so hard to treat your employees well. Too many COOs are unrealistic about their expectations especially when it comes to sales because they don't place themselves in each areas of a company like Tina did. The hostess was so sweet to continue to put on a smile after so much she's gone through at such a young age. I wish her all the best.

The other 60% teach you how to think : good vs bad, right vs wrong, honest vs dishonest , pro and con in everything they do in later life. Even buy a car will need lot of time for them think everything about the car they going to buy. We used to go to the original restaurant in Brampton all the time. You had to climb up these very steep steps to get into the restaurant because it was on the second floor of a strip mall. I remember the owners being very nice and very friendly and very family orientated. When the kids were little all they wanted to eat was Jadu chicken wings and rice and the restaurant was small enough that we could let them go up to the buffet by themselves and still keep an eye on them. I had my 40th birthday party in that original restaurant. Great memories. Other thing I remember about this family is that they always gave back to the community in the way of donations for the hospital etc.

This is a surprise because so many Asian restaurants (all Asian restaurants) I've gone to they don't really care about the customer.
This is a beautiful woman who really cared. Did me a lot of good to see this.

This was a great video. Working in the service industry for 5 years to have someone who appreciates your work is really crucial. If your mind is stable and you are motivated to do better and better that is how the employees last long in your company. Scolding and getting angry at your employees and treating them as slaves would not in any way help to grow your business. Treat your employees as you treat your customers. Would love to visit Mandarin when I will come to Canada. Great work and thank you for treating your employees as your own family and helping them fulfill their dreams. To conclude we are all human and should be treated in an equal and respectful way.

The food service industry is so difficult and it takes a lot of hard work and dedication to keep a business thriving. I was overwhelmed to learn that the profits were only $1.00 -$3.00 per person/per table. That's a very lean overhead and practically no room for waste/rotting veggies or late deliveries of supplies. Plus, how are the employees paid and bonuses given out with such a slim profit? This must be a very finely run "machine" so to speak. All of the employees are happy and enjoy their positions. They wouldn't stay there for years or have aspirations to become management in the company. I was wholly impressed by Mandarin Restaurant. All of the chain have unity. You know where you are and what you are getting when you pull into the parking lot. All of the staff are wearing the signature tropical uniforms, so you know who is an employee should you need assistance and all of the restaurants are clean and the employees are friendly and approachable. Very nicely managed. There is quality control in the foods that are presented at the buffet and the buffets are kept clean, no cross contamination and the temperature is checked to be kept within food safety guidelines which is extremely important. I'm happy that Ms. Chiu was chosen to go under cover to check on the progress of the family's restaurants. It's important to know what is going on at ground level. Kudos to the Cosmetologist who transformed Ms. Chiu. Her own daughter didn't recognize her and made her burst into tears. Poor little girl. She was terrified that a stranger asked her for a hug, a stranger with brassy hair color! 😂. Table number A2 at location number two... the lady who was seated STARED AT JENNY WHEN JENNY TURNED AND HEADED BACK TO TO THE SEATING HEADQUARTERS FOR THE STAFF. I wondered if it was the brassy hair color that caught her attention.😅. This was a fantastic episode and the MANDARIN RESTAURANT was extremely generous to the employees that trained Jenny. So nice to see. ❤❤❤

Such a nice review. I also saw the woman starring. I may be wrong but to me she appeared offended that "Jenny" left, like a look of "Wait a darn minute! I want to order a drink! So glad "Jenny" did not see that.

My favorite drive in the winter is to see the Mandarin light display at their head office. Hundreds of trees in all colors. It is really spectacular. The food is not quite authentic but it is tempered for the Canadian palate. It is my go-to restaurant for asian takeaway and the lobster-fest is pretty great in season as well.

I just wish I had a Boss like this when I was working in my past jobs and Hotel and Restaurants...I faced so much abuse and discrimination and never got rewarded for my hard work...but I never mistreated anyone as well because I know how it felt...and I am very grateful for this woman for rewarding her employees for their hard work and dedication as well as their efforts- the wonderful gifts they received. In a world that is so fast and heartless...there is always good out there as well thanks to individuals like her. No matter what business you run...the customers are your foundation BUT the employees are your WHEELS! You need to treat them both right. I am a boss now at a commercial building...and I hope to rise at a higher level at my work as and even become an Owner of a business...I will always treat my staff who work hard like GOLD because how you treat your workers will result in what kind of service you and your customers will receive.
