I was a retail manager at a major sporting goods chain. I got so sick of dealing with young people drama that I stopped trying to develop them and started hiring the most experienced candidates. Over time, I ended up hiring a bunch of retirees who wanted to work there for the discount. Those creaky old guys and gals not only out worked all the people who were in their 20's and 30's but my store started setting all kinds of kpi performance records. I didn't have to constantly monitor them. I could tell them what I needed, and they would figure it out. I had a team of 65 associates, and by the time I left, the average age of my team was just under 50. It was the best team I ever had the pleasure of leading.

Federal law prevents employers from discriminating against the elderly in hiring. This protection applies to people over 40 years of age. Whether you are 41 years old or 70, for all practical purposes, you are treated the same. In other words, you are considered elderly. It's always been alive and well. They just can't tell people such things directly like this skit. They tell you you're "overqualified", if they bother to give you an excuse at all. Usually they just don't call you back, or tell you they went another direction. To admit this outright opens them to a discrimination lawsuit. But they couldn't send the moral life lesson the video intends without being blunt about it.
