A shame Super Mario Bros. Deluxe doesn't get more love. Nintendo keeps re-releasing the original game but Deluxe is always forgotten. It's not even on NSO.
@@thefancydoge8668 It's crazy because back then it was all the talk. Re-releases were rare, the Virtual Console was far from being a thing and Nintendo has had some success with expanded re-releases of their games (such as Link's Awakening DX and Donkey Kong for GB).
In Super Mario All-Stars, the brothers' regular color palettes resemble their appearance in The Super Mario Bros. Super Show (Mario's blue shirt and red overalls also date back to his Donkey Kong days). Luigi's shirt is a blue-purple mix.
The only thing holding back Deluxe from being the definitive version of SMB is the screen crunch from being on GBC. If someone were to remake/port it on a non-handheld it'd be amazing.
A guy is making a game called SMB Ultra Deluxe. Which is basically SMB DX in widescreen for PC. It works in vain to Sonic 3 AIR where you need the Rom of DX for it to work. So it can’t be taken down.
The sound effect of Lakitu throwing Spiny Eggs and Cheep Cheeps jumping out of the water in Deluxe is taken from the original Mario Bros. when an enemy comes out of a pipe
Even with the screen crunch, I'd still say it's on par. The original release from 1985 is still a great game, nobody get that wrong, but this version is just so much better in every way. It's also a lot more forgiving allowing you to just begin again from the start of the world you ended on, instead of having to enter a cheat code to do that in the original NES game. To be honest, the best version is probably that of Super Mario All-Stars.
It's really impressive just how many improvements Super Mario Bros. Deluxe added compared to the original 1985 game such as more animations, sound effects for certain enemies, a world map, Mario/Luigi destroying a Castle after defeating its Boss, Luigi getting his own, unique, palette swap colors rather than just having it be both his default, and Fire clothes, etc.! My favorite of all these however is Peach standing on her tippytoes when she kisses Big/Fire Mario/Luigi, I just LOVE seeing her shoes in all their 8-bit glory! 😉 Definitely had a lot of memories with the Game Boy Color remake of this classic game (hard to believe it's already been 25 years since SMBD first came out too... God, I'm old)! 🥰 Maybe you'll do future comparison videos between Super Mario Bros. (1985), and its 1999 GBC remake (if there ARE anymore comparisons to do so, that is), or even just show off all the new stuff Deluxe added over its OG counterpart! Either way, another excellent comparison video, Looygi! 👍
I also know Super Mario Bros. Deluxe and I think there are enough differences to make a second video! Since this video got a lot of views, now we just have to wait for Looyig Bros to make another SMB Deluxe video.
The Game Boy Color was an 8-bit system like the NES, most it's insides were comparable to a portable NES, they didn't need to try to make it authentic because it was quite literally the NES on-the-go. Same as the Game Gear, it was essentially a portable Master System.
Those changes are so cool, they feel like something that they would've added to the original game if they had the technology. Although I wish they made the map have the SMB colour palette aswell, a bit weird to have it be 16 bit.
Actually, the map is totally authentic - they did it exactly like it would have been done on the NES, with 4 colors for each 16x16 square Edit: I do agree that it would have been cool if they had made the map designs look more like the actual game rather than later games (the tall cylindrical trees with eyes, etc)
I remember that my brother borrowed SMB Deluxe from a friend when we were in elementary school. This brought back a ton of memories and I started feeling nostalgic. Awesome video!
I never even knew Super Mario Bros Deluxe had this many differences. I know little about the game as it is, but literally, one of the only things I knew of this game was Luigi having better coloration in normal and fire forms. Even then, I only figured that out through Mario Crossover.
Two things I wish Mario Maker had used from Deluxe: small/normal green/brown for Luigi and correct pallette for Fire Luigi. The other being the boo sprite.
3:21, the same changes to this version of the game also applies to the Super Mario All-Stars/Super Mario World/Super Mario Collection versions of the game as well. Also, the music in the Coin Heaven and Bonus Rooms areas are completely different in the previously mentioned games.
The sound effects for Lakitu throwing spinies and the Cheep Cheeps jumping may have been done in part to compensate for the screen crunch. Because you can't see as much of the screen as you could in the original, the sound effects let you know when one of these has occurred in situations where you could see them happening in the original. Lakitu is at least always visible at the top of the screen instead of being cut off. I love Deluxe though. I finished it 100% a number of years ago, getting all the stickers in the album.
At this point, i haven't investigated how SMBDX Challenge mode was... But some curious changes. Also, how come they have animated lava-water here, but not on SMM1/2???
I’ve never played SMB Deluxe, so these were completely unknown to me. It’s really cool how much they went in and polished this game up! If it weren’t for the screen crunch, this could easily be the definitive version of the original game.
I'm on the younger side (only 28), and the GBA was my first console despite the Game Boy Color being quite prominent when I was a kid. As a result, Deluxe was my only experience with the first Super Mario Brothers, but man was it a great experience. I never knew that there were any differences between the two versions, thinking it was just a port of the original game. I had no idea the original didn't have those overworlds similar to SMB3. It makes me happy that there are those who remember this game.
That was a good time to grow up. It was the last time that Nintendo properly ported the classic Mario games to new hardware as major releases with new features. Mario Bros., SMB1, SMB2j (to a lesser extent), SMB2 USA, SMB3, Super Mario World, Yoshi's Island and Super Mario 64 DS. A Link to the Past and the Donkey Kong Country trilogy got similar treatment. Ever since then it's just been emulation of older versions of the games.
Though the tones are different, the right and wrong tones also exist in Super Mario Brothers and Super Mario Brothers 2 (Japan)/The Lost Levels/For Super Players in Super Mario All-Stars/Super Mario World/Super Mario Collection for the SNES/NSFC, Wii, Wii U, 3DS/2DS, and Switch. The moving water and lava also exists in the aforementioned versions of the game as well, though they look completely different from the versions that are in this video, and the unofficial Commodore 64 port of the game has them as well, albeit looking different than all of the previous versions of the game.
Also, Super Mario Advance was originally going to be called "Super Mario Bros. 2 Deluxe" or "Super Mario Bros. Deluxe 2" and it's still called that in some unused files. :)

One of the very few portable games I've owned and played more than once. Wish they'd incorporate all the additions to a full-res version of SMB, I think that would be my favorite version of the game then.
2:15, the video doesn't mention that a. the changes to Luigi only makes him have his classic look when he has a Fire Flower, b. that the Regular and Super forms of Luigi are like the version of Mario from Super Mario Brothers Special, except that the red parts are replaced with green, c. that Mario and Luigi also look the same in Super Mario Brothers 2 (Japan)/The Lost Levels/For Super Players, Versus Super Mario Brothers, and All Night Nippon Super Mario Brothers, and d. I think that future 2D Mario games revert back to the NES/FDS way of doing things in regards to the Fire Flower version of Luigi.
I love that beyond the motion which is easily noticeable, her eye and mouth sprite subtly changes when she kisses him, which i believe conveys her closing her eye and pursing her lips.
I love the choice of luigi's palette being a thought-out mario swap rather than just a new palette for normal luigi Now the olive green shirt of mario is given to luigi, and he has bright green overalls to combat mario's red, and now his old palette is used to match up with mario's color swapping and white overalls
I played the deluxe version non-stop when it came out. I'm always shocked that people have either never heard of it or that it just never gets brought up because it's definitely me a fantastic version of the original game
Toad's jumping may be a reference to the jumping Toads in SMB3. when you are in the King's room in each kingdom. Also, something interesting, Luigi had that weird color pallete to make it easier to tell them appart in the first Mario Bros Game, that had 2 players on screen. Only after the 1st Super Mario Bros game they started to play around with his colors, tough the Nes limitations on colors and sprite size made it hard.
And the Player and also select between Mario or Luigi in SM3DL on the Map once you beat Special World 1 Castle dam all these references to future tittles but I really had to expose Mario Wonder
5:24, Versus Super Mario Brothers also has its own differnce in the first Warp Zone in World 4-2, but it is a bit different, as it only has the Warp to World 6, rather than the Warps to Worlds 6, 7, and 8. All Night Nippon Super Mario Brothers follows the same rules as Super Mario Brothers.

One of the very few portable games I've owned and played more than once.
Wish they'd incorporate all the additions to a full-res version of SMB, I think that would be my favorite version of the game then.
God I freaking love this remake. So much love poured into it.
If i remember right they did the toad thing in All Stars, and each castle had more and more toads
#1 -- same thing for the water waves in the water levels; amazing, when you consider the Game Boy Color's own limitations as a handheld unit.
0:59 I thought the screech sound in the 8 bit sections of Odyssey was taken from Sonic (which surprised me) but it seems that wasn't the case. Cool!
Super Mario Maker 2 has a new Fire Luigi
7:14 awww... ❤
I love that beyond the motion which is easily noticeable, her eye and mouth sprite subtly changes when she kisses him, which i believe conveys her closing her eye and pursing her lips.
So that's where all my Mandela effect stuff for SMB1 came from. SMBDX was the first version I played of it.
Even though I played both versions I'm way more nostalgic for deluxe. I played it so much as a kid
The full resolution version of this game is seriously needed
ooh the memories..! SMBDX on gbc was my very first video game ever :')
2:48 Esa emotiza que me hizo 👻
XD
I love the choice of luigi's palette being a thought-out mario swap rather than just a new palette for normal luigi
Now the olive green shirt of mario is given to luigi, and he has bright green overalls to combat mario's red, and now his old palette is used to match up with mario's color swapping and white overalls
I always wanted to have this version's features with the original's resolution. Hackers get on it!!
It truly is the Deluxe version of the game
I played the deluxe version non-stop when it came out. I'm always shocked that people have either never heard of it or that it just never gets brought up because it's definitely me a fantastic version of the original game
I grew up on this game thinking it was just the original and all of these were original
I remember when I was a kid I begged my mom to buy me this game. I thought Mario and Luigi looked so cool on the cover of the Deluxe version. .
Then I was so disappointed that they looked nothing like the cover. I was like “wait a minute, this is the NES version of Super Mario Bros. for game boy!”
I still played the shit out of it. I was obsessed with finding the princess.
Beated it on my first try.
If you beat it they give you special
Levels.
Both versions were awesome and I would binge play Super Mario Bros. Deluxe when I owned a Gameboy Color! Ooohhh, I love the nostalgia
Don't Miss The Outro At 8:29 "Infinite 1UP Glitch"
Great video Looygi 😊
I had SMB Deluxe as a kid, and it became my introduction to this classic game. Ever tried the Tarot card mini-game included?
Just incredible how nintendo was able to not only add new things to SMB DX as well as adding small touches to it but how they even solved new problems with it like for instance i never knew about those changed rooms at the end of those underground levels as a replacement of those warpzone rooms in challange mode wow, in fact i have never asked myselfabout it how and what untill now when i realize that nintendo had to change those things to get around that.
