- The servers for the original super mario maker game on the wii u are very close to shutting down. In order to reflect on that game, I thought it would be fun to look at the game’s sample courses! Unfortunately, unlike Mario Maker 2’s story mode levels, The Mario Maker 1 sample levels are almost all awful. So join me today as I rank all 68 of Mario Maker’s AWFUL Sample Courses!

Thank Nintendo that the worst gimmicks were only done once like with darkness and underwater in Wonder.

Honestly, I appreciate the sample courses because they were meant to provide inspiration by not being complete. They show you the semblance of an idea and then invite you to continue that idea on your own. However, they don’t really show you how to make a _cohesive_ level, which SMM2 does a much better job at.
and also the 3ds version
There's also the levels in the 3ds version, I remember having fun playing it and getting the goals they gave
The 3ds levels are mostly just longer versions of the Wii U levels if I remember correctly, idk because I've only played the 3ds version and I'm probably the only person who has the 3ds version but not the Wii U one.
@potatoanomaly7546 there are like twelve of us, me included.
@@potatoanomaly7546 I mean there are 100 levels flat in that game. Even if they ported everything from the WiiU version (they didn’t) 42% of the levels would be new.
Each level also had two unique challenges that weren’t in the WiiU version, so they would also play into the ranking depending on how fun and creative the challenges are.

The 3DS version has extended versions of some of these levels! As the resident owner of half of the copies that game has sold I thought it may be worth mentioning that.
And coincopia is an airship instead of underground
(I own three copies btw)
There are actually quite a few levels they changed the themes for
@@LunarBoo3 copies? Damn Lmao.

Looking back, the Super Mario Challenge in the 3DS version was WAY better than the Sample Courses from the Wii U version. Some of the mediocre concepts they had back in the Sample Courses were expanded upon in the Super Mario Challenge, including some unique levels. The best part of the Super Mario Challenge was the Bonus Medals you could collect. Some of those medals were really challenging to collect and it makes me wish we could apply these Bonus Medals to our own levels in the Mario Maker games. Maybe in Super Mario Maker 3 if it happens?
to be fair, 1-1 remixes werent overdone when they made this game
arguably false since there are 1-1 remixes in past mario games

Which Bowser is sus?
when the bowser is sus
2:27 I genuinely don't understand why refreshing levels got so popular, that and the same copy pasted platform levels kinda ruined the popular tab
Probably because they also got thrown into the endless mode’s easy section and most people don’t skip them and therefore boosting their popularity.
Who let the little Timmy’s on the dev team 💀
my best guess is that Nintendo wanted you to feel inspired so they tried to simplify there levels so the kids didn't feel intimidated. But at least they learned from it because 3ds and 2 are way better (but that could be because they wanted to give you a reason to buy the game if you didn't have online)
My bad
I still can't believe the OG game came out without Keys
Edit: and the scroll stop
At least they added keys in a later update, the original game never got scroll stop.
Music blocks were added in an update

LETS GOOOOO
Just a reminder that SMM1 made you have to wait every day for a few more elements and themes, hence the generic "castle" and "airship" and "sub areas" demo levels
You should rank every level in the Super Mario Challenge in Super Mario Maker for 3DS. It's quite similar to this but the levels are much better/longer/more interesting, with some of them being improved ports of these levels. They even have medals in them that reward you for beeting certain challenges in them like defeating all of one enemy or not pressing a certain button. I think you would have a lot of fun ranking them.

It’s good to see people are still making videos about Mario Maker!
Sunken Mario is actually one of the levels that appeared in the 3DS version’s Super Mario Challenge. There were little rings of coins that indicated hidden blocks with stars in them, and one of the challenges required you to continuously stay in the star power form in order to kill enough goombas to get 5 one ups.
The whole existence of the 3DS version is a crime they did that game terrible, but they did make the developer levels better. They did reuse some of the levels from the wii u version, but the special missions they added made them a lot more playable.
Once upon a time in the vibrant city of Gameropolis, there lived a man named Odyssey Central. With his dashing looks and keen mind, Odyssey was not just a passionate gamer, but also an aspiring game developer. His love for video games knew no bounds, and among his favorites was the beloved title, Mario Odyssey.
When Mario Odyssey was first released, Odyssey Central was swept away by its charm and innovation. He spent countless hours exploring its imaginative worlds, solving puzzles, and rescuing Princess Peach from the clutches of Bowser. His love for the game extended beyond mere enjoyment; it sparked a flame of inspiration within him.
Determined to contribute to the gaming world that had captured his heart, Odyssey Central devoted himself to honing his skills as a game developer. He studied programming, game design, and storytelling, all with the dream of one day creating games that would inspire others, much like Mario Odyssey had inspired him.
Years passed, and Odyssey Central's dedication paid off. He caught the attention of Nintendo with his impressive portfolio and unwavering passion for gaming. When the time came to develop a sequel to Mario Odyssey, Odyssey Central was offered a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to join the development team.
Ecstatic and honored, Odyssey Central eagerly accepted the offer, ready to pour his heart and soul into the creation of Super Mario Odyssey 2. Alongside seasoned developers and fellow enthusiasts, he contributed his ideas, expertise, and creativity to every aspect of the game's development.
Together, they crafted new worlds brimming with wonder and excitement, designed inventive gameplay mechanics, and breathed life into captivating characters. Odyssey Central's love for Mario Odyssey infused every pixel of Super Mario Odyssey 2, making it a worthy successor to the beloved original.
When the day finally arrived for the game's release, Odyssey Central felt a mix of nervousness and exhilaration. As he watched players around the world embark on their own adventures in Super Mario Odyssey 2, he couldn't help but feel a sense of pride and fulfillment.
In the end, Odyssey Central's journey had come full circle. From being a devoted fan of Mario Odyssey to becoming an integral part of its sequel's development, he had lived his dream and left his mark on the world of gaming. And as he looked to the future, he knew that his love for games would continue to inspire him to reach even greater heights.
Ok now rank all the 3DS ones-
OK I was gonna make this a ha-ha joke, but after thinking about it for a bit this could actually be a really cool video idea. This is because they reused a lot of levels from the original Mario maker template stuff, but remade them into actual real levels. Heck, in the game’s story mode, there are actually side missions you can do. (for example, in the 1-1 remix, there’s now a hidden Bowser JR boss fight, and you’ll get a cool medallion for winning the fight)
None the less, this would be a cool video idea.
what are you talking about? 1-1 is literally the same from NES version. There is no Bowser Jr. boss fight
@@Doktario_Mystario OK yeah I just saw footage of it. I am very stupid lol. I swore there was something like that, but I could be misremembering.

You need to rank all 380 green stars in 3D world for as far as I know it had never been done
why would you rank the stars invidually when you could just rank the intire level and also include the stamp (and maybe also mention if certain characters make the stage better or worse)
@@Doktario_Mystario well the green stars have never been done so its an original idea there are youtubers that ranked the levels

I first fell in love with your channel from SMM2, as it was when I just got the game and wanted to make nice levels. Seeing it back after years is so nice.
Hey fun fact in Super Mario Maker for the Nintendo 3DS they made the levels better. They made the short levels longer and added a few new levels. Not only that, but each level has two optional challenges attached to it, adding a completion element to it.
If only there was one more...

Jokes aside I did not expect you to make a video on these levels, but hearing you complain is fun so I thoroughly enjoyed this video.
Really happy you dropped another Mario maker vid, these are always my favorites.
I was expecting a FNAF jumpscare here 23:33
please do the 3ds version too, my case:
1) it expands on almost every sample course and makes them better (both in length, challange, being interesting and tutorialising the assets)
2) it makes levels like 1-1 interesting by adding achievements, that are not only fun and challanging, doing them rewards you by being able to edit those levels
3) the story mode makes up for the lack of online functionality and basically makes it a 2D Mario game with a level editor
4) it has original levels of it's own
5) it has the best "story mode" of the trilogy imo because it doesn't have story exclusive items, it does a good job tutorialising assets and it gives you a reason to buy it even if you don't have online
6) the game is underrated and deserves more regognision
Do a video on how to make a good little Timmy level in Mario maker 2 as an April fools video
Your videos have been so good lately
NWC 2015-3's pick-a-door is at least a reference to Bowser's Castle in Super Mario World
man this guy is so great. (although this waiting for ranking all elements on the periodic table)
Man, this motivated me to pick up Mario Maker 2 today! Ive seen some of your vids and tried making a traditional style level. Its honestly pretty bad, but maybe ill get some more ideas from finishing all the other Mario games i can play!
It’s worth mentioning these levels were made for the “10 mario challenge” which is like the 100 mario challenge but you only have 10 lives and it’s only these premade levels. So they couldn’t make the levels too challenging, or else it would be too difficult for kids to beat
I'd love if you rank the 3ds Mario maker levels next
Great video as always! I've got a suggestion for you: Ranking all 45 Yamamura's dojo lessons. You could rank them by if they're correct, by how informative they are, and how pain in the *ss they're to watch. ^^
I remember seeing Nintendo doing a "demo/presentation" of SMM1 at a Best Buy before the game came out. I remember a level (that i got to play) where it was just double speed Conveyor belts and stars with a 10 second time limit. I think "Do not Delay" was there as well. I might be incorrect, but I think there was a level with fire bar waves? This was nearly a decade ago so memory might be wrong- but I definitely remember the Conveyor level.
there was a 3ds LOZ with 4 toon link as well
I think you're a bit harsh on a lot of these levels.
Outside of the Nintendo World Championship Levels, these levels aren't about playing them/beating them in of themselves. They're about teaching the player how things work and they go from very simple, because little kids play the game, to a bit more advanced.
They all do a great job, even if the lesson was "hey you can make pixel art" or "hey, springs bounce on each other". Even the lesson of remaking official courses is great because I've seen some amazing remakes of official courses (they're drowned out by 1-1 but that isn't the lesson's fault that the students don't want to branch out).
The NWC levels were meant to be played and beaten as a sort of a challenge and should be judged differently. A lot of these just fall flat because they either have bad design (blind jumps) or incoherent design.
3:03 MAN SPOTTED
Are you gonna be ranking the 3DS "Super Mario Challenge" levels, and the title screen courses for SMM1 and SMM2?
As I kid I would play Music Notes soo much it was my favourite level lol, I would always try to break all the blocks with shells.

Mario Maker is one of my favorite Mario spin off franchises, so I’m glad to see Odyssey Central making another Mario Maker video!
Finally another mario maker video after almost 2 years
Event courses are where it's at in terms of (mostly) Nintendo made levels in SMM1.
can't wait for your next video "Ranking Every Super Mario Maker Level"
Damn, that Great Bay Temple music gave me flashbacks
Finally, after years of waiting, he decided to make another MM video. Will probably be a while before the next one even if there are still thing he could like level ideas for masks
*@[**01:43**]:* To be fair, it could be a level for those who like to collect every coin...
You’re sooo close to 200k!!!! Good luck
Recently I’ve been recreating these levels (that appeared in the 3DS version) in SMM2 not even remembering some of these were samplers in the Wii U version
When you said "so retro", my switch decided to crash
I guess it couldn't handle the power of retro
*[**02:12**]:* I still think they can be cool though, especially conceptually...
*If you don’t make them just a platform that moves towards the goal.*
I think you should mention when a course is given to you when you unlock new course parts, as the levels are made to show you how to use the newly unlocked item
I really hope you rank the Mario Maker 3DS Premade Levels! Alot of them are expanded versions of these levels and they each have 2 challenges tied to them giving each level a unique challenge.
Some of these felt like they let kids make them.
Damn Mario Maker content is BACK!
If you don't want to play "Guess and Check" for "Find the Fire Flower," you can just spin jump off of the first spiny tower over the second one and you'll win.
Please do this for the 3DS version at some point. I remember those stages being pretty decent. Plus, they're stitched together by a kind of mixed tutorial and story mode with the edamame-loving parakeet and that cute original character / mascot they immediately abandoned.
RIP Mystery Mushrooms. If there's one reason I can not consider Mario Maker 2 a straight-up replacement, it's that. Though, even if they did carry over to Mario Maker 2, I wonder what the odds are that they'd bring back all of them. Maybe Nintendo would've needed to fight to get some rights again, but I hear that a few of the costumes were the result of their creators taking a personal interest in Mario Maker, like Nisekoi author Naoshi Komi making the stages that give us the Chitoge costume (still absolutely blows my mind that we had the heroine of a Shonen Jump ecchi comedy series as an official Mario power-up).
Mario Maker 1 doesn't have levels you can't recreate so instantly better.
We need the sequel: Ranking Mario Maker 2 title levels
The top area in 3-1 remix (infinite 1-UPs) is a coin heaven sub area but it looks like they placed it above the level because vines can’t take you to sub areas
Will you be ranking the levels from the 3ds version?
Some of these levels are extended.
Feels weirdly nostalgic. Definatly played these levels more than I should have.
Anyway; 2:06 feels weird to think that nintendo invented automatic levels (at least within mario maker)
5:44 the Dry Bones killed your contoller because you harmed him. RESPECT THE UNDEAD!!!
I think you could do the same thing with title screen levels in SMM2 !
Question: Are you including The Lost Levels in your 2D Mario ranking?
I was literally thinking about how it’s been months since Odyssey made a Mario Maker Video
I’m pretty sure NWC 2015-4 had the weird mushroom as an unlock. I got so mad as a kid trying to beat it that I raged and broke my Wii U gamepad screen
NWC-1 may be chaotic to play but admittedly it was extremely fun to watch in the tournament, especially when you'd never played Mario Maker 1 or 2 before. Real "this ain't your grandma's mario" vibes
back in those days i would make a copy of pipeline to the other side every time i wanted a sub area bc i didnt know how to make one on my own
I would love to see a video of what Odyssey wants dry bones and to be like in smash.
20:51 If I remember correctly, the competitors were racing on these levels to see who could complete it the fastest or out live the other, so it's probably just a time waster troll
Damn I miss the Mario Maker series…I’d love to get a sequel someday with Wonder 😢
I’d like to see you rank all 100 courses in the 3DS version. I found them to be some of the most creative (and challenging, when going for the medals) official Mario levels ever.
I recall making a level on Mario Maker based off of Block Town called, “Bowser Smashes a Building”. It was a Little Timmy level that never got uploaded since I didn’t have online. Just thought I’d share
This is really a testament to how much of an improvement Mario Maker 2 was over Mario Maker 1's orginal release. RIP weird mario and mystery mushrooms tho
Before it closes, maybe you could make a ranking of the official special courses in course world? Such as Bowser’s Cannonball Run?
The very similar 3ds version levels, while most still being mediocre at best, have some interesting medals/achievements you can go for. Like for that 3up wiggler one, getting 3 extra lives would get you the hard medal
12:44 Mario really didn't watch his own show 💀
I wonder if you have plans to rank every event levels in SMM1.
Ha! Try the 3DS courses some time. Now that's a _real_ ranking video.
i thought you meant the title screen levels with the sample levels i completely forgot these even existed
Question: Are you including the Lost-Levels in your ranking? Or Super Mario Run
