Man Scotty got people driving from New York to look at their cars because we can't find an honest mechanic in this state LOL that just shows you how good Scotty is. Hell I would drive my car down to him too if I had to.
No I just go to school in RI. My power steering broke in Providence, not New York.😂
Car that won't drive at all. What then?
@@fromthebackofmymind Then you're obviously not driving it...

@@MBS1995 I can make it back in 3 hours to NY. Just am still skeptical to drive it without power steering. Car just 173 and is good besides the steering.
I replaced this on my 2011 Ford fusion at the dealership and a little over a year later it broke again. The dealership said I was SOL and had to pay for it out of pocket to fix it. Last Ford I will ever buy.
What's SOL?

I've got a 2011 Mustang V6 I bought brand new, 240,000 miles on it & never had any problems with the electric power steering, or anything else for that matter. I have replaced suspension parts & brakes that eventually wear out, no big deal. The most reliable car I've ever owned. Im 68 btw.
Yours is from the good era before they started using wet timing belts and automatic gearboxes with dry clutches and friction plates instead of torque converters. My old manual 2001 Ford Mondeo was excellent and still drove fine when I recently traded it in. But they just don't make them like that anymore.
Breaks my heart as the only 2 cars I'd ever had were both Fords. But where I live, the one modern Ford Mondeo that is reliable (the hybrid one) was the same price as a similar age and size Lexus, which just doesn't make any sense. And I hate SUVs, so their lineup is not really to my taste anymore.
Sometimes you get Lucky.

My used 2015 Lexus GS 350 purchased in 2020 with 68K miles is a model of perfection. It now has 115K miles. All I do is routine maintenance with a trusted mechanic.
It is a perfect Toyota product.
Drove a Oldsmobile with no power steering for months until my husband rounded up the pump / hoses. Was great on the freeway.
I loved the electric power steering of my Mustang V-6 3.7. In fact the oil filter loved it too. The engineers positioned the filter right above the module. And every time I changed the filter, I had to place a piece of carboard over the module to protect it from a bath of hot oil. In a side note: I had an uncle who was a cheap skate. He bought a Chevy Vega back in the day with no power steering. And man, that thing gave me a workout when I drove it. I couldn't believe how many times I would have to turn that steering wheel for such a little car.
they use electric power steering because it's cheaper. also, it costs thousands to replace but a new pump for the old style system is $100.
Yay!
The electric power steering on my Ford Escape Hybrid is out.
Just inherited my dad’s 2000 ford ranger . 228347 miles on it yet it still runs pretty well .
Thanks for the info 😊
Hey Scotty I had a 2011 VW Tiguan AWD. At 77K the same thing happened while on the highway. After it sat for an hour, the power steering came back. At the dealer, they saw the codes, but they could not reproduce the issue. They quoted me over $4K to replace the rack/motor. I quickly sold it to another dealer. I'll never buy another vehicle with electronic power steering.
I bet like the Fusion's elec power assist steering it was made by Bosch! Their products are worse than Delco or TRW nowadays.
I have a Tiguan and will never buy another German car. Way too over-engineered.
@robd9863 Yes, and it's a shame. The turbo was also going in mine at 75K.
@@whitelotus1594 Wow! Mines the 1.4TSI with both the turbocharger and a supercharger. It supposedly makes 150BHP but I don't drive it hard. Currently on 190,000 miles but I live in fear of when something goes wrong on it.
Everything that has needed fixing has been expensive. Water pump was around £600 from memory. Clutch £1200. Compared to my little old Vauxhall (GM/Opel) Astra needing a water pump for £40 it's ludicrous.
My gf has BMW which is even worse. I simply refuse to buy another one of those, ever.
In order to avoid electric power sterring, that will preclude you from buying many newer cars!
Not to mention that all Ford Fusions were built in Mexico. So the quality is suspect at best.
I mean, they’re good for 100,000 miles. But after that, that’s when you’re guaranteed to have problems. My ‘06 Fusion transmission started to go after 120,000. At least the 3.0 V6 was solid.
I'm Mexican so I was "built in Mexico" and drank Tequila for decades... you are correct. I'm only 36yo and I already feel SALVAGE !!! 🤣🤣🤣
I guarantee if Mexicans were paid a living wage they'd do a much much better job

My brother had a 1958 Pontiac with manual steering, and that was a real workout to drive. The worst was a '63 Cadillac my Dad had, and the power steering went out on it while I was driving it. What a wrestling match!!
I don't think the steering column, and intermediate steering shaft is built robust enough to hold up long term to being driven with no power assust. Will eventually get wear, slop, and strip out like a Port Cargo spline socket😂
Scotty Kilmer! The City of Houston purchased an all electric garbage truck!

I can confirm. I had a Taurus limited 2015 and power steering died around 70k miles. Lasted 9 months then died again. Second time died again and was a major factor in getting side swiped
I had an electronic power steering failure. I cleaned the connectors and never had the problem again. I am amazed Scotty did not check the connectors for dirt or corrosion.
I’m surprised a Fusion lasted over 100k.
You mean 100mi ?
I mean in this video he doesn't have a EcoBoost engine soo
Plus on my channel, i have an explorer with 108k miles and still runs and shifts like a dream
So it's not a surprise much
My son in law bought one for my daughter!! He is a flake so it doesn't surprise me.
Well the one I had went over 250k. Still working.
this happened to me in Decemeber 2021 with my previous '10 Ford Fusion at 114k miles. steering completely locked up on a busy road and i had to manually steer it to the dealership. i guess i got lucky because the dealership fixed it for free, wasn't sure if it was an extended warranty but they only recalled the '11-'12 Fusions only for this issue.
Take a photo of the pothole and get the state to pay for the damage and repair, here in Ireland if you do this and the pothole is severe enough to cause damage then you get a reputable mechanic to take photos of the damage and then submit the claim, important to get the pothole as well recorded 😊
My 2012 Taurus is lovely. My 2007 fusion was too. I’ve owned a lot of fords but next time we will get another Toyota. Appreciate your insights!

My 2009 corolla with terrible roads in the Caribbean has no power steering issues. But there's a little star-shaped coupler bushing on the steering column that goes bad on what seems like lots of cars. Causes a rattle inside ever so often on certain road conditions but doesn't hurt anything
My last Ford truck’s hydraulic steering went bad and I had to have the rack and pinion replaced. My current F150 has electric power steering and has way more miles (260k) and I haven’t had an ounce of trouble.
170,000 miles on that Ford isn't bad.
The transmission sucks but I got it at 110 and put 60 on it in 2 years. Do what I can to keep it goin.
Takes me back to my first Toyota Starlet - everything manual.
Ask Scotty about them!!!!!!!!!!... 😊
I had a 2009 Toyota Venza and the electric power steering went on it 500km from home! what a workout that was. The new unit was $2600 CDN and with labor and taxes cost over $3,200 to replace!. Luckily it was a company car, so the company paid. Otherwise I would have probably scrapped an otherwise good car.
My electric steering gear went bad on my 2012 fusion and it was covered under a recall.
190,000 miles and that’s the only issue it’s ever had.
My son's 2016 F.usion power steering would quit when making a right turn. The dash gauges would flash and light up like a Christmas tree making the driver scared and almost lose control of the car. I found that the wire that feeds the motor rubbed through the insulation and grounded to the frame. It was poor factory wire routing that caused the problem. I repaired the wire and rerouted it and that fixed the problem. All car companies are making overpriced junk anymore.
I once installed a remanufactured rack in a customer's car, and the inner tie rod snapped while I was adjusting it. 😆
Our '09 Corolla has electric assist power steering. Took me awhile to get used to it because far less effort is required to turn the wheel. Wifey's '09 Ford Focus had hydraulic steering assist. Honestly, the Focus' steering was so heavy in comparison, it got to the point I didn't want to drive it anymore. She traded it for her first Honda, and has been a Honda girl ever since.
How cool would it be taking ur car and meeting Scotty... 😊
My 2015 Fusion SE's transmission went after 46K. All of the positives I would have had with the car went out the window when Ford told me I had to get a completely new transmission since it was no longer in warranty. I fixed the transmission at a specialist instead and quickly traded it in for a 2017 Camry which has had no problems since. I haven't taken Ford seriously since, but good luck if you do.
Toyota went to electronic power steering because it was the number 1 issue for warranty claims. And for lane assist systems has nothing to do with cost
It cost me 500 to replace the steering box on the column of my truck
This thing was heavy putting up where it bolted to the frame. There's no rack and pinion in a f250 SD.
💪💪💪Fellow going to grow him some upper body---shoulders, upper back... These cars are harder to steer today without power steering compared to back in the day..... It is a real shame that a young guy's probably first car has to have a problem that can be in the $2K plus range... Looks like he was taking it well with a smile in the background....
I had a 2009 Chevy Impala which I drove to 365,000 miles.
This video is giving me some painful Ford flashbacks!
I'm assuming you checked the fuse and tested to see if any voltage was going to the assist motor
I remember scotty was imressed with the Ford Fusion in another video claiming its Toyota technology...am confused
Probably the Ford Fusion Hybrid. They use Toyota eCVT tech for the transmissions.
Ford borrowed, legally, their version Hybrid from Toyota. They did a minor design change, putting inner parts side by side instead of in-line as Toyota's original design.
@@tooltime9260 I understand , my point was that he was pleased with that car
Scotty has double spoke a bunch of times about different cars, praising a car one week, then pooping on the same car 2 weeks later, most fusions are really good cars, depending on the year and which engine, if you notice, scotty is always fixing a Toyota, but very rarely does he need to fix anything on a Fusion.
I have had multiple Ford vehicles that have electronic power steering (still have 2) and none of them ever failed in the slightest. Never even heard of them failing. I've washed the engine bays and still no failures. Maybe you should look where you are driving if you drive on crummy city roads with massive potholes.
Give it time
Had a 96 crown Vic and only thing I had to deal with was the condenser and had an axel change
200K on 2013 Taurus with electric steering, great car
54000 on my 2014 ford fusion. Hope it lasts 150,000. 2.5 four cyl. So far so good, knock on wood. I think the six speed transmission shifts a little weird. They seem to shift at a little higher rpm nothing crazy and always shifts.. rides smooth.
I have a 2001 mustang V6 3.8l with almost at 170k miles. Still going strong.
Had a 99 Saturn SL and i loved it, no power steering and 5 speed Manual. wish they made them again. 250k i drove it and was still driving great. Change oil and brakes and rotors. That was about all.
I don’t like Ford but my first car (given to me) was a 2007 Ford focus. Friend had it brand new from 1100 miles and gave it to me at 202k. I drove it to 212k with minimal issues, it’s got a problem I can’t figure out right now.
You are a 🐐 thank you for all the knowledge you give here ,Can you fix my car
had the dealer replace my steering rack on a 14' focus was like $3600
You should’ve junked it
Replacing electric rack and pinions is easier imo but they are most definitely less reliable.
I drove a base 1967 Camaro Sport Coupe that had manual everything. It was interesting to drive to say the least 😂
Power steering went out on my pontiac. I got one from rock auto works good. Spent 1800
As a tech at a ford dealership in New England..I wouldnt buy ANY Ford product right now ..the last 5 yrs I've seen things go from bad to TERRIBLE...every vehicle they make had had some serious issues ...the trucks have really went downhill lately.and that's all they had going for em for the longest time
Their Mustangs seem to do pretty well though (the ones equipped with Tremec at least). Correct me if I'm wrong.
When's the last time anything from Ford other than a fleet truck or Mustang wasn't needing a daily repair?
At some point I will drive to Tennessee or Rhode Island where you are Scotty from California so you can look at my 1989 Nissan sentra lol
Ford went down the shitter the day they decided to kill the Crown Vic. I have a 2010 Crown Vic Police Interceptor, which means I literally have one of the last good Ford cars ever made (although it is body on frame, uses an F 100 frame and basically an F150 engine, axle and tranny, so you could consider it a truck with a sedan body)
I remember the cars from 70's without power steering and manual transmission. Never any issue.
No power steering and a manual transmission and you have excellent theft protection!
What I like about driving old cars is I learn what I like and what I don’t and what last and what does not.
I wonder if the ground was good the hard string module I never did see that part of the show
Hey Scotty,
I have a 2003 toyota tacoma 6cyl that loses power on a 2 mile inclined hill. Why?
It's a Ford Fusion, that's the problem. My father had a platinum hybrid, and every six months, he got a recall notice. He even got a recall for door hinges.
It's crazy to think that this is the same company that made the legendary panther platform.
Hey Scotty, did you try unplugging that connector to check for corrosion on the contacts? Sometimes just unplugging/plugging it back in gets these things working again. Likely a bad module but this might just be a cheap and easy fix if you're lucky.
I have had full size cars without power steering and they were not that hard to drive. There is not reason an electric assist would have to be that hard, maybe to make you fix it with lots of dollard.
😂, literally had this issue last year and spent a pretty penny to get it fixed/replaced.
Yes, it's cheaper to build in the long run. It is a stupid design that you have to replace the entire assembly. But I think the reason manufacturers do it is for fuel economy. Not running a pump 100% of the time.
Yeah with Volkswagen you have the same issue. All models that are petrol have separate steering control modules but for the TDi models you have to buy the entire steering rack which is £1500 or $1,604.45 US! Like your Ford there, the TDi has the module integrated into the rack which is ridiculous!
I had a 2004 Freestar van..let another person borrow to go market while at work..at 174k was falling apart..but it was still drive able on the tradet-in..
on..on and on again..Made in America ..crap~ola...too many issues
Thank You.
i have a 2011 that i had to pay to have the electric power steering replaced at 45k miles, those cars did have a recall but that crappy company NHTSA wouldn't include my car because it was made 6 days before the recall, (same plant! )
Glad you're still uploading videos. TH-cam might have changed but you sure haven't
My Toyota Yaris has electric power steering. Bulletproof no hoses no fluid all the belt runs is the water pump and the alternator. Can’t get more simple Then that
Not a fan of any electric assisted system ( steering/braking….)
I drove one of these when I was learning to drive. It was a 2019, It was okay but I don’t like the way they’re set up
I've had friends with electric P/S going bad and I carefully suggested that they simply remove the motor, cover up the open space and drive manually. Nope; they wanted it fixed, for $$$. Sometimes, a unit never really works and others never break. Typical for any mechanical device; toss of the dice. If I ever have a car with electric (groan) I'd pull out the electric motor, remove the gear if I could to eliminate the resistance of spinning a dead motor shaft and put the motor back in. (maybe?) Sure, with quick steering common compared to 4+ decades ago it would be harder at slow speeds, but I'd like to try it to see what it feels like, especially if it's going to cost so much to fix. Either that, or MAYBE find a working unit or parts in a junk yard. (stupid cars) I've driven non-power rack and pinion cars in the past and it's no problem. I'd like to visit these designers on Halloween. I'D show them a trick they wouldn't soon forget! (HEHEHEHEHE)
I watched well on the dashboard, there is abs problem too right ? So not just the hard steering...

172k? Not too bad. My Saturn went above 345k miles before I gave it to my nephew I wonder if Scotty would say my car was crap just because it’s an American vehicle ( I did not have any issues other than an oxygen sensor being replaced and regular maintenance)
my 2014 Ford Fusion SE was a pile of crap. the transmission died 2 weeks after a $2000 tuneup, including plugs, belts, fluids, water pump, etc. Not happy! only 167k miles with great maintenance.
If the work was done at a Ford dealership, they flush the transmissions, that's probably why the transmission broke
I'm pretty sure the statistics bear out that EPS is a lot more reliable than hydraulic. I've had a few Fords, pretty great cars. Never any major issues until the rust kills them after ~15 years.
statistics can say whatever they want them to say
My former’04 GRAND MARQUIS was wonderful. The engine still ran like a Swiss watch at 205k. But it was rusting badly. Every GRAND MARQUIS and CROWN VICTORIA in that time frame had rust and peeling paint in exactly the same places. Lasted 17 years for me so it served well.
Ford transmissions suck
@@natas12rm Speak for yourself. IMO, Ford and Mercedes are the only companies to ever make a good transverse torque converter automatic. And the 10-speed in my Ranger is good enough that it's rarely noticeable. I'm on my 4th Ford, never had a single issue with an engine or transmission. The only major problems I had with the first 3 were corrosion related, which happens to anything after 10+ years in Ohio, haven't had any major issues with the 4th.
@@rightwingsafetysquad9872 my mom had 3 transmissions on her explorer. I’m pretty sure as well any duel clutch is garbage by them. Idk
The Ford Fusion is a reliable car. You may find exceptions to any mechanical product, but the vast majority of people that have actually owned a Ford Fusion have had good good luck with them. Will it be expensive to repair some day -- perhaps so. I am thinking all the new cars made since the 1990s are more expensive to repair once something breaks. And they have more stuff to break now. In regard to hydraulic steering, I did have a 2007 Honda Accord with it, but I think they changed the next year. I see many of this generation and the precious one on the road, and that is a promising sign. The future of Ford is a question mark. Maybe it will end up being only a commercial truck company some day, or broke -- who knows?
Will it pass safety inspection?
Is Ford as bad as Honda (1.5 T GDI oil dilution engine) ?
Most Ford engines are pretty good, don't let the dealer flush your transmission, better yet- don't let the dealer touch your car

Not the worst car ever made unless you forgot the 1983 car of the year......drum roll please.....the Renault AMC alliance. I bought one for my youngest in the early 90s with the deal of I'll buy you a car and pay the insurance (as long as you keep a b average in high school) but I got to pick it. An alliance popped up locally with only 30k miles so I bought it. It usually ran every other week, was slow with no pickup and would intermittently start without fooling with it. The absolute disappointment in the boy's eyes when we picked it up one sunny November day still brings tears of laughter to my eyes many decades later. It was the perfect car for a 16yo male. He sold it to me a few years later after successfully trashing it for &100. I tweaked it, cleaned it up got it running and sold it for $500. I'm still very happy with that entire transaction.
