It's that way in a lot of places. We had a section in engineering, where the ones that had messed up in some way got sent to work on small projects that upper management didn't care about that much or maybe didn't understand. I like a poster I saw one time in a maintenance shop. Two chimpanzees one with his arm around the others shoulder saying since you're too stupid to do anything else we're making you the supervisor. Please don't touch any tools or equipment.

I worked at the Walmart quicklube while in college for mechanical engineering. The other 3 guys that worked there evenings and weekends were also college students and we were all car guys. We never had an issue. So you should say SOME of the places are bad, not all. Some have decently smart people that know what they're doing. We did oil changes and tires, repairs, replacements, rotations etc.

I tell you from personal experience. Not all Walmart have smart guys like yours. My friend went in to get an oil change. They drained the transmission fluid then over filled the engine oil. The engine was smoking. Now Walmart have to pay for damages.

    • @ralphmowery2898

Maybe things have changed. In college I worked for
Sears doing minor things on cars. Oil and battery changes, points and plugs, shocks, tires. Never had any problems doing that. Now most cars do not need much and it is hard to find the engine under all the the shrouds. Did lots of work on my own car. They did have some mechanics that did some of the more demanding work and we could always ask them if we were not sure of what we were doing. Really how much education does it take to change the oil and filter on most cars.

That sounds good and props to you. But if you had a 50% of getting shot going outside of your door at home - would many of us take that chance? What about 40%? What about 30%. So the fact that some of the places arent bad doesn't matter. The risk of a damaged engine and the hassle of the place trying to get out of responsibility is not worth it. Again much respect to you and ALL of them should be like you but the fact that this can happen...many of us would be like "why even risk my car for an oil change". We'll just pass and keep it moving.

I really enjoy Scotty's videos, but he constantly advises you to change your own oil. I used to do that, but now, for me it's unrealistic. I had to sell my home as a consequence of my divorce, and now live in a rental apartment. So I have no place to either change oil myself, or store the oil change equipment. And, there is no place to recycle the used oil. K-mart used to allow you to do that, but the local store (as mostly all others) closed. Garages at one time were required to take used oil, but I don't know if that's true now.

My niece had exactly the same experience at Walmart. They failed to actually put heavy oil in the engine and it seized just as she left the parking lot. They did pay to put a new crate engine in. One of the biggest problems is the fact that most high schools no longer have any VOTEC training... No auto shop, No wood shop, No electric shop, etc. Our school systems are failing us in so many ways... Sadly no competent mechanic wants to do the oil changes because most are paid on commission, and there's just no money in it. Of course some places use it as a basis to charge you even more money doing additional work that's not needed. The entire system is just so broken.

My dealership used to try to sell me the air filter change special. For only $100 bucks they would charge your engine and cabin air filters. I can buy both filters for around $30.00 and put both of them in just a few minutes. The longest part is getting stuff out of the glove box and putting it back. The $100 at the shop only covered parts and labor. They would tack on a fee for shop supplies, hey! I used a paper towel to wipe my hands on after doing the engine air filter, Then there is the environmental fee. I can throw the old filters in the trash can with the best of them. Have a 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe we took in to the dealer for state inspection. For around 3 weeks after that it would backfire off and on and you would see black smoke out of the exhaust. I couldn’t understand it because it was always a good running car. My daughter was taking it on a long trip to Louisiana so I wanted to change the oil. I do all my own oil changes so I have a 6 qt drain pan ( my car takes 5 qt)and I’m under the car and open the drain plug.Right away I knew something wasn’t right. The oil just shot out of the drain hole and filled up the drip pan and I had at least a quart all over the driveway before I got the plug back in. When I emptied that, I opened the drain again and got another 2 qt before it stopped. I went back to the dealer and told the service manager. He pulled the paperwork and evidently they do the courtesy check of the fluids and top them off. He said his best guy did the service! I said well there’s a problem somewhere because I had 4 extra qts of oil in my engine. He looked at me like okay, so what do you want me to say. I said I’m just letting you know and left. I was just very lucky I changed the oil because it could have blown the engine on my daughters trip which was around 4000 highway miles. I would be out big money for a new engine.

Lucky for him he realized something was wrong and had the gear oil removed and engine oil was added. I have been taking my 04 Honda to the Honda dealer where I purchased it.

Firestone is the worst imo. Took my car there after being towed from a bad alternator and battery. They charged me to find out what the problem was even though I told them several times it was the alternator because the tow truck driver showed me. They fixed it but after a few miles, heard rattling noises. Then the air conditioner stopped working. The air conditioner which had zero problems before just stopped working right after they installed a new alternator. I told them and they tried to argue it wasn’t them. Yeah never going to Firestone again.

I have Walmart do my oil changes. One of the engines uses 0w20 to 5w20 and the other two use 5w30. I use Mobil 1 and they have to get it off of the shelf. No pumping it in with a hose, where I can see someone not paying attention and putting too much in, or even forgetting to pump the oil in. I also choose which filter to use and I've watched them pour the oil in. I've never had a problem, but it's best to keep an eye on them to make sure that they do what they are supposed to do.

I had something similar happen at a BMW dealership here in the Dallas, TX area. The kid changing my oil left the old seal from the oil filter in place. BMW had picked up my car and drove it to their dealership for the service, then returned it to me. My new BMW was driven 35 miles through heavy DFW traffic leaking like a sieve. The engine lost over 3 quarts of oil during the trip. I attempted to talk with the Service Director, but he couldn't be bothered with talking to me until the next morning. I won't ever buy from their dealership again. Incredibly low standards.
