  • How did Nidhi Razdan, a prominent journalist with 20 years of experience, fall for a fake Harvard job offer? How did she get led on for months by catfish pretending to be staff and students from the university? And the biggest question...why did they even orchestrate the elaborate scam?

    More stories like this need to be shared... people think "oh, I'd _never_ fall for that" but the critical message is _how these scammers evolved their technique._ Even the most diligent cybersecurity expert is capable of being scammed... it just needs to be the _right_ scam at the _wrong_ time. Reporting a scam to the real business or person (even if you didn't get drawn very far into it) is _very important_ because scammers use near-misses to hone their craft... it's also an impersonated person's best chance to get ahead of the issue & minimise damage.
    Harvard are playing a dangerous game if they ignore scams like this... universities rely heavily on reputation, and if someone can convincingly impersonate your institution or staff to scam potential donors, funding channels like corporate banking or govt grants, etc. there is potential for _a lot_ of damage.

    I was actually scammed by a fake job offer in a similar way! It made me feel terribly stupid, and I still feel too embarrassed to really bring it up with people I know… even though it was the evil people behind the scam’s fault, not mine 😢

    • @medea27
      @medea27 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're not stupid, we're _all_ susceptible to scams... and the best way to protect ourselves, our family & friends is by _sharing knowledge,_ so please share your experience with people you know! Con artists _rely_ on their victim's embarrassment & silence to keep their scam going... and you'd be surprised how many people don't know simple clues to look out for _(especially_ with targetted phishing like job offers), let alone more sophisticated scam techniques.
      Believe me, I used to work in risk management and what's "obvious" to one person is not necessarily so obvious to others... so you should never feel stupid for being scammed because I _guarantee_ you know people who would fall for the exact same thing.

Why didn't she do some research on Harvard first? I am sure she had access to a computer. Or call them and ask to speak to the head of the journalism department? Its so dumb that people expect Havard to do anything at all for this situation... What the heck can they do? Its not Havard's fault that someone in a foreign country impersonated them.

    • @friendformationbot
      @friendformationbot ปีที่แล้ว +13

      good question. the answer is that since it was Harvard being impersonated, they could put some of their massive budget and legal team onto the process of subpoenaing GoDaddy for the identities of the bad actors in this case. They could give a press conference, they could open a fraud department within the school, they could send people to talk shows to discuss the issue, etc etc etc etc. considring havard's budget and how poorly this reflects on them, they really should be engaging with it directly. not doing so is both weird and a bad decision from a student trust and PR standpoint.

    • @medea27
      @medea27 ปีที่แล้ว

      Think about it as identity theft... if someone stole your name & info they can use it to _directly_ harm you (take out loans in your name, steal money from your bank accounts, etc) and/or _indirectly_ harm you (ruin your reputation, scam a friend/family member by pretending to be you, etc). So while Harvard may not have been directly impacted in _this_ particular scam, there is a BIG problem if people are successfully impersonating your institution & staff... they could scam your donors or students out of money pretending to be Harvard, for example. The _least_ Harvard should do is take steps to protect their name & logo from misuse, such as employing a cybersecurity team that regularly scans & takes down fake sites from the internet, like any large corporation does.

      okay jared 😭😭 different cultures have different names, and usually they mean something pretty cool in that culture. For example, in my home country of Egypt, the name “Jared” sounds like the word for Newspaper…that would sound funny to others. Keep the culture in mind i guess 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️ idk man
