  • OTP Mafia Documentary: Every day, around 20,000 Indians fall victim to cyber criminals, who also scam more than 140 Americans daily. And these are just the reported cases. An NDTV investigation found that Jamtara-like dens of cyber fraud have sprouted across the country. More than half these cases - 54% - have been reported from just four districts. After several months of investigation, NDTV, as part of its #Consumerconnectndtv initiative, has produced a documentary to make internet users aware of cyber fraudsters and their MO, so they can be cautious. NDTV will consistently cover topics that impact the common man as part of its NDTV Originals series.

I am from Kolkata, and I can assure that Kolkata is a big hub of such crimes. Back in 2015 when I was working in a call center, someone approached me to work for him and offered 3 times the salary I was receiving back then. He even told me that I will be able to work from the comfort of my home and won't be required to go to any office. I rejected the offer as I knew what kind of job that was.
Fast forward to 2019. I was working in another company in marketing department. There I befriended a guy named Sid who was a graphics designer over there. He once told me that he worked for a scam company for 5 months but eventually left because he was too afraid to get caught someday. I still remember the words he said that day, "Bhaiyaji, the police will never arrest the top guys as they provide 'security money' to the ruling party. But they will arrest us small workers to prove that they are working".

"generalise Indians as scammers" I mean where's the lie. Im an Indian and literally every Indian you meet, are high grade scammers, and sadly, this cheapness starts in the family itself, who encourage their kids to be unethically opportunistic to be 'street smart'. Sadly the biggest scammers in your lives would be your parents, cousins, relatives and your very best friends! You can't change a situation unless you do the first step i.e. accepting the truth instead of being in denial.

How did you miss the most crucial question to ask the Bank, Police, and criminals - how they are getting the data? Are they hacking bank databases or buying them from hackers? If yes, then why are banks unable to protect customer data. This is very important to know from where all of them are getting data.

I did small research on them, they have very precise information about their target like their card expiry date and sometime customer recent bank visit.
And their target is not limited to particular bank geography, not limited to public or private bank. So insider job can be ruled out.
Trust me .. this is something very big .. they know how to exploit bank security to fetch these kind of details. And these kind of frauds are happening with American bank or western banks also. So I assume some international hackers there which hack and sell these banks information on dark web.

There is no point in tracing, catching and prosecuting these scammers. How many people can we arrest and how much energy we will waste behind it? Also, even if we catch all the criminals, can we guarantee there won't be new people who will get involved?
The solution is to secure the internet. Also, there has to be some very very fast acting system which can reverse the money if the victim complains and proves that he is scammed.
Till then spreading awareness is the solution. We have to protect ourselves.

Those suggestions seem like major privacy issues. It's actually what the government wants, more control. We need to monitor our own cyber habits and security, not give control to the government? That's a bad idea! We just need to locate these companies individually and deal with them, and their collaborators, without having all of our privacies invaded. Just like camera's do not prevent crime...they might help solve one, but that's after the fact. Being surveilled 24/7 is not the answer to ending crime. That's what law enforcement, governments want you to believe. And now some people beg for it. Citizens willfully choosing to have their privacies invaded... Do you really want to live in a world like that? Not me. Easiest solution is to stay away from shady deals. Don't borrow money from loan sharks, etc. and treat everything online like it's a scam. Do your homework first. If it seems to be too good to be true, then it probably is. Don't lie to yourself. Scammers love easy prey! Any money or dignity lost should be a lesson learned. But harming yourself? or others? I have a feeling some of these people have other emotional issues.

These scammers don't feel bad even if they get caught by the police and go to jail. After they're released, they just go back to doing the same thing. In their villages, their friends also do it, and they don't think it's a big deal. Easy money tempts them to do it again. We, as users, need to be careful, and we should tell others about it to keep everyone safe.
And these kind of awareness videos are always helpful. Good job

@@prashant0514 I am just highlighting one of the feature of UPI which the criminals are using to their advantage and nothing is being done by our esteemed institutions RBI and NPCI to combat this. UPI provides the facility to transfer Rs. 1 lac in a day without adding a beneficiary without visiting a bank branch which is not present in any other mode of online payment like IMPS/ NEFT/ RTGS. UPI has revolutionised the payment ecosystem in India but one must be aware and be rational about the negative points. Else one can go around calling unknown people as shameless individuals on the internet.
