    A judge who said "I do not look at nuns as ordinary people..." doesn't sit well with me. Justice is supposed to be blind, and here is a judge admitting that he can not be impartial when it comes to a case that involves a nun. Maybe someone who is more knowledgeable in this case can explain why there wasn't push back from the community after he admitted to this.

      @@numbuh1507 no, I do mean "justice is supposed to be blind". The figure that is typically used for justice is a woman holding a balanced scale in one hand and a sword in the other. She is also blindfolded. Which is where the idea that "justice should be blind" comes from. If the judge views nuns differently from an average citizen then that judge isn't "blind" or impartial to those who may stand before him.

    All her years of good service? All that was a sham. She was stealing and gambling that entire time. I agree with the judge that nuns should not be seen as ordinary people - they should be seen at a higher standard. Instead the failure of a judge put on the rose-tinted goggles and saw her as someone who did no wrong and did a simple mistake because she was old and actually a good person.

    I’m sure Dr. Shipman did some great things too.

    So what, the history of religion is the theft from parishioners. When I was 7, my Mother became very sick, I was the 3rd of 4 children, my Dads relatives could care for the oldest and youngest, but my Dad put us in care of the Church “home” as “respite” while my Mother recovered. My sister and I were in that place for nearly 6 months. During that time my Father regularly gave us pocket money. The staff insisted that we not hold money, that staff would “hold it for you”. One day I asked for some of the money to take on an outing, to be told “but that was donations and put in the plate each Sunday”. The next weekend my sister and I told our Father what we had been told. My Father, not a loud man, kicked in the door of the Heads office and reamed him and told him either the money was returned or there would be an Information laid with the Police. The money was returned.

    I've always wonders what the financial situation is like for nuns, as far as what they can buy themselves and how they go about getting it, if they aren't allowed to handle their own money. I can't imagine being an adult and living somewhere where you have to be completely financially dependent on someone else like a kid. I wonder how much say they have over what they even get to eat every day, if they're not the one doing the budgeting and grocery shopping. Do they at least get a small allowance and access to vehicles so they can go out on their own to buy tampons when they need them? I know it's wrong, but in a way, I can kind of understand what this woman did, if she'd reached a point where she stopped believing in Catholicism years earlier and was just sick of the control, but to old to go anywhere else and get a job.

      In most orders, the community buys personal supplies for the sisters. Their salary goes to support the community, so that is not theirs to spend. Some communities give the sisters a small stipend each month, but usually that is not very much. Obviously, this sister wanted more, and abused the school system to get what she wanted.

    The justifications to ease her punishments make no sense. "She was a nun!" Yes, and she leveraged that status to cover for her lies! "She did so much good for the school!" Yes, and she used her status as head of the school to create fundraisers that she could rob. "The children's education didn't suffer!" But they were using out of date resources that gave them a poorer quality of education and then the kids and the families spent time, effort, and money to fix that and all of those inputs were then stolen - a total waste. "She's so elderly and can't think straight." She thought straight enough to be a head of school and was clever enough to defraud it. The only reason that she is now elderly is that she got away with abusing her position for so long and when the church found out they spend more time trying to cover it up and lie to parents before being forced in front of the courts. Yes, the Catholic Church teaches forgiveness, but the person must be honest about their sins, ask for forgivenss and must make amends (which includes facing up to consequences). They can't just mutter 'sorry' and then scuttle off never to be heard from again while others clean up the mess.

    Just a different perspective on this topic. I taught in a very terrible private catholic school at one point too. The fact is that most non-urban remaining private catholic schools are run by very cruel people. Case in point: The fact that no one said anything after someone won all those times probably indicates a really screwed social situation was going on. So, maybe she had a fuck it moment as well or just matched the energy?
    I know this goes against reading the room but yeah. Point is put on someone else's shoes first before judging.

    ah the good old line "you can compensate smth bad with smth good". I hate that line, because it means that you could literally excuse everything if you just do a good deed. It is quite rich for ppl to support even if she stole away options for the future of the children. all the money she wasted is gone. Sadly I know a case where someone developed a gambling habit out of depression since her son died. think she also might have told me as the first person, but I thought she was joking at that time.

      And what do we learn from the Bible? Forgiveness is found in repentance and turning to Christ Jesus, not our good works. Plus, that's all good that she helped a lot of students, but how does God feel for those shaken in faith due to her sin?

    • @Seriousbomb54
      @Seriousbomb54 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Bidenlost2020 nah you are usually forgiven regardless of what you do. ofc that's no incentive to be a criminal. I am a christian, but a protestant and a non-believer so I pretty much agree that the bible is just a book and nothin else. And yes, forgiving our brothers and sisters is a choice, but one God call us to.
