  • The new Ford Ranger is available with a diesel V6, but the old biturbo 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel soldiers on. Is the 4cyl enough? Do you really need to spend $3000 more on the V6?

The new 2022 Ford Ranger Sport comes standard with a 154kW (206 hp) 2.0-litre twin-turbo diesel four-cylinder engine. For $3000 more, you can have it with a 184kW (246 hp) 3.0-litre single-turbo diesel V6. So, which way should you go? We look into the question in this review of the T6.2 Ford Ranger Sport Biturbo, which costs $63K.
Ford’s latest Ranger ute competes with the Toyota Hilux, outgoing Volkswagen Amarok, Nissan Navara, Mitsubishi Triton, Isuzu D-Max, Mazda BT-50 and others.

They are a lot better than the previous model. I’ve order the wildtrak but would have liked to have seen the top dash glovebox on the XLT also for my staff and a headsup display on the wildtrak don’t know why they didn’t do this as standard.

I was looking at the road thinking that it was very familiar. Then it dawned on me, it’s the Honda facility at St. Ives. I used to work for the local council that took care of it between the police no longer using it and Honda coming in. Did quite a few flying laps in various vehicles after hours 😂. Great fun long ago

If you get the Bi Turbo with 10 speed it is not slow at all 'for a ute' because the very low gear and close ratio, plus a few overdrive gears. I test drove a 2.0 Bi turbo 10AT Everest here in Thailand and am surprised by the acceleration from 0-120km/h. Once reached 120km/h the overdrive gear settle the engine speed down to about 1500rpm, can bearly hear the diesel, more wind noise and road noise, which are also minimal at this speed. For long ride it should be pleasant.
The weaker 2 liter with 6AT is a very different story though.
The new Raptor with the 3.0L twinturbo V6 is a beast. It is not sportscar fast but it is a supertruck.

Because it provides a very relevant reference point to people that haven’t driven the vehicle. Pretty simple 🤷‍♂️ 99% of people with a Ranger aren’t lugging around cement blocks each day. Instead, they are driving around town or overtaking on the highway which again is why 0-100 tests are emphasised.. Pretty simple. It’s not a Mack Truck bud.

The biggest advantage of the V6 other than the full time 4WD is NVH levels. It's a far smoother, quieter and nicer drive than the 2.0L. If you chip and exhaust the V6 (Not for everyone) you will wake it up. I also think long term re-sale value will be far better with the V6.

When you say "exhaust" are you removing the DPF? In my experience, with the modern cars and the DPF set up, there's very little benefit in exhaust changes from the dpf back. For some, all they will need is a throttle controller. As far as the comment "far smoother quieter and nicer", you must have had a friday version of the 2.0lt to test drive as that's certainly not the experience for many of the people that i know have test driven both.

I would trust the 2.0 twin turbo for long term reliability much more than the Ford V6 which has had a pretty poor reliability record over many years. Specifically the V6 was used by Jaguar LandRover and suffered crankshaft failures. It may well have had new crankshaft material since they moved production but I would take some persuading after many previous promises.
The main attraction of the V6 is the uprated driveline, especially the ability to use full time 4x4 engagement which is in a different league to the part time system otherwise fitted.

For how long has the Ford 3.0 V6 Lion diesel been fitted to the Territory?
JLR and Ford kept saying it was fixed but even the last production fitted to JLR are still failing. There is just physically no room for more metal in the fillets that join the crank bearings and it is there, across the fillets that the crank invariably fails. The engine is basically too short. There is no excuse for this rate of engine failure. It is fundamentally a flawed design for which there does not seem any practical physical remedy, even through metallurgy.

Like all these F'ing companies they drip feed these overpriced vehicles with half the tech to make you feel like you need to spend even more exorbitant money to have the "best". It is insidious and found in everything where money is involved. Immoral greed. Example is where Apple was MADE to change their charging cords to a standard everybody uses(type c ). This needs to be done everywhere. If it can be added then it is added or left out to have a basic way way cheaper base vehicle. 2 models only. Rant over ;-)

@@HDvids101 I bought one of these cars.
I love it. But it is overpriced.
Was just in the market for a new car with my new family I’ve just started and the WildTrak ticked all the boxes that made me and my wife happy.
I would have gone for a lower model. XLT or Sport but the WildTrak had somethings on it (roller cover for one) that we needed so we paid the extra.
The thing i didn’t pay more for was the V6. I’m sure it’s a fantastic engine but it drinks more diesel and adds nothing but KW’s to the stats.
It tows the same as the 4cyl
It carries the same as the 4cyl
It has the same off road features minus the 4A but that is a useless feature anyway.
I love this car and I don’t feel like I’m missing out.
But agree with you. The predatory actions of car manufacturers is disgraceful. The fact that BMW is going to charge a subscription for heated seats is beyond disgusting and governments need to step in and clamp down on that shit soon or in a few years we will be renting intermittent wipers from dealers.

I mean the car is fully warmed up and heater on cab is like 22*C when you drive off in morning seats will be like 15-20*C.
After all as its Turbo you cant Just drive off in morning until engine at full temp, well you can but you CANNOT use boost until oil is atleast 75-80*C
Which means about no more than 2000 rpm in gear.
Unless you dont care if turbo dies in 100,000km then kills engine when it grenades itself.
