Do I REGRET Buying a Tesla?? (Model Y after 50k Miles)

  • I've had my Tesla Model Y for over two years and already logged in almost 50,000 miles. In that time I had a few fit and finish issues as well as a big service where my high voltage battery died. I asked a number of people with tesla's their experiences and was pretty surprised.

Ask a Roadster owner with battery problems. No battery available. And one bad cell takes out the whole battery. Only one place can isolate those bad cells. In Boston. When you get the first sign of failure, DO NOT DRIVE OR CHARGE THE CAR. Ship it to Boston.

I've had better experience with my service center appointment - but because I knew my normal service center was known to be not so great - so I rescheduled for a different center. However, I will say, that if you have an issue that can be addressed with the mobile service - that is the way to go. The lack of human numbers to call is a real downside - I prefer using the app and website for the most part but sometimes you need a human to help.
Beyond a couple minor service appointments (one mobile and one at a center), I've had no issues. About 18 months and about 12k miles.

My only complaints war the normal steering turns with yoke, it should have been electronically steering with race steering/turning, and not direct turn steering, so you can take advantage of the shape, and not be limited/annoyed/inconvenienced by it. and the other thing is the lack of sensors, they keep removing them. (and finally a wish, they should offer full water resistant option and warranty add on for it.)

I ordered my 2021 3SR+ from clicking the button to home delivery was less than 2 weeks. I order my 2023 Y from clicking the button on 1/13 to picking it up at the dealer 2/3 (about a week delay due to me not filling in all the paperwork). I will say that the "dealer" experience was fair. It was hurry up, hurry up, hurry up (due to all the texts, emails, etc to tell me to reschedule delivery early). We got there and had to wait 30 mins for a guy to help us even though we had an appt. End of the day, I have 2 Tesla's in garage; so I guess you can say that I'm super happy with them.

@@tedlasalvia9668 WRONG by 2030 many states are banning and refusing to provide insurance on gasoline cars. in China you have to pay 15,000$! just to register a gasoline car (eco registration tax) and then you can only drive it from 8am to 5pm. if you drive it after these hours you get a 1000$ "fine" for polluting... If China is doing it you can bet USA canada and EU will follow.. there will be no choice and its becuase fools agree to buy, promote incurage these EV abominations. Did you know China owns 90% of the worlds chemicals and minerals required to build EVs? and theres only enough Lithium on the planet to replace 5% of the worlds vehicles... You know why NWO wants EVs so bad?? becuase they dont want people to drive and be mobile anymore. They want total control over majority of people. Evs are perfect. A: there wont be enough EVs for majorioty of people to have one, only the rich will drive. B: they can easily shut off the power and stop your movment during civil wars or protests. no power cant charge them. . ( gasoline you can stock pile gas and drive for months or years with out a gas station) C: again if you live in senior center apartments or highrise buildings you wont be able to charge them or not be allowed to own them. ( some stratas are already banning the instalation of charge ports being installed in there buildings)The Covid Hoax lockdowns were a TEST to see if people would tolerate having there mobility removed. These Evs are much worse for the planet. now we will clear cut forests to build Hydro plants, mine the entire planet for minerals, and set up nuclear power plants in ever city to produce more power. LA has rolling black outs durring the summer becuase of to many people using there Air conditoners, but you people think it will be fines with everyone pluging in these cars at 5 pm? LOL... EVs are a threat to not only freedom of choice and freedom of mobility but also life as we know it.

My service center was great to work with. I think Tesla appeals partly to a tech crowd that doesn’t understand automobiles and they think they are getting a perfect machine like an iPhone “the technology” people. Tesla is a small car company compared to the rest of the industry under tremendous pressure and demand for its products. Expect to have extensive service as this is a highly proprietary product that can only be serviced by Tesla Motors, this is not an economy car! Nothing about Tesla is cheap! Except for the absence of gasoline. The car is amazing but it’s not a Honda, don’t expect it to be like one.

@@steveb6709 agreed. It’s funny when people compare a Tesla to a Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla. Of course the total cost of ownership will be lower for an ICE car like that, but I’ve had a single reliable ICE car for 20 years. Life is too short and I got the Tesla because it’s the car I want for the next 10-20 years. By that time, I’m going to be near retirement, so I’m just trying to enjoy the surprisingly huge amount of time I spend in my car as much as possible.

2021 Model 3 LR - 11 months of driving - 12k miles - 1 at home service call for a B-pillar camera replacement and 1 at home service call for a trim piece replacement on the driver seat. We purchased it "used" with 3k miles. Apparently it was not somebody else's cup of tea. We however, love our Tesla and we are looking to add a Model X in the near future to give us more passenger space and cargo capacity. The Model 3 is a tight fit when we have our 15-year-old son and my wife's service dog both in the backseat. Our other current vehicles include a Honda Clarity Plug-In Hybrid and a Jeep Wrangler JKU Sahara. We have a solar array on the house so we only use charging stations when we make longer road trips. We do not have a local Tesla service center so our tech has to drive down from Lubbock, Tx (about 120 miles away) but it has never been a problem for us.

Hi Chris got my LRMY in May 2020 have 48K miles on it, (many trips from LA to Texas) had door molding come loose, simple fix, 12 battery died and a panel alignment upon pickup. Only other problems I had were 2 flat tires which was not Tesla's fault however I did fid out the best way to fix this is replace the tire. I had them patched but it didn't hold after driving a few weeks. Still have original tires on the front with 4/32" rubber left. Tesla has foam sound proofing in there tires to make them quieter but almost impossible to patch. Still happy with it thought. Got my CyberTruck ordered, I'm number 10K on the list hope to get it this year.

Great video. I am having my doubts also. I picked up my MYLR on 2/10/22. I looked it over and it appeared fine BUT when I got to my detailer who put the film and ceramic pro on for me he noticed a scratch on the driver side rear window. Personally I think it was scratched by the prep people at my pickup location since I saw them wiping a car down for delivery and they were not careful - wiping from the bottom of the car to the top using the same cloth and never cleaning it. That was resolved by replacing the window but I have another on going problem - my ultrasonic sensors in the front do not work and hence Park Assist does not work.
It was that way from day one, then suddenly started working and more recently stopped again. Remote analysis said that he saw the car moving and distances changing and he speculated that it was a problem with software/UI. I brought the car to the service center yesterday and they indicated that it was a problem with the protective film which I seriously doubt BUT I see that some detailers remove the film from the sensors and also saw one report of the same problem. The problem, IMHO, is the service center not looking at their own data as provided by the remote technician. They now say that none of the sensors work - which has never happened since I have used the rear distances as a parking assist in my garage. It sure sounds like the software/UI problem since he could see movement remotely but it never gets to the screen. I guess it is Let the Buyer Beware with Tesla. Removing the film from the sensors makes Tinting Your Tesla as you did 1 month ago on TH-cam kind of difficult. Who wants to drive a blue car with a bunch of white (or other color) dots showing?
I'll follow-up when it is resolved - if ever. Do other followers of yours have this problem?
Thanks again. Your videos are helpful.

I love my 2020 model 3 Sr+. I didn't get the "new car experience" as mine was pre-owned with 9,000 miles. I have 27,000 miles on it now (so 18,000 miles by me) and no major issues. I did have the rear driverside door aligned as it stuck out just a bit and the rear rubber around the inside of the door jamb replaced (all warranty) when we bought it, but otherwise it's been a great purchase. No charging issues using the Tesla network or Chargepoint networks. I think my only true regret was not buying a long range model as I tend to drive my Tesla more on weekends than I thought I would, plus its driven more than my other gas powered cars AND I probably should've bought a Model Y for the additional space. I will say this, with the issues that some people have, is the reason I did keep my Vw Eos, as a back up vehicle and because Tesla doesn't make a convertible yet. So sorry to hear about Simba. Me and my fuzzy kids will pray for him and your family.

The thing I do not like is the battery degradation. At delivery my M3P 100% charge was at 315 now it’s at 280. Had it’s for year and half. Barely supercharge.. and never over 90%. Other than 3 times. My battery died a month ago. Rear battery disabled.. and couldn’t drive.. which was a shock. It was at tesla for 3 weeks. They gave me $100 Uber credits per day while in the dealership. Which was nice.

Do remember that it uses your average power consumption for its range estimates. So if you go above it’s very optimistic range, it will show a lower range.
With that said, reports show that the battery degrades quickly in the very beginning, and then slows down to almost nothing.

No problems at delivery day. Well there was a dirty smudge on the driver side A pillar and one of the guys standing around on the delivery lot cleaned it. No misalignments, scratches, dings, stuff not working or any of that. The delivery was in Santa Clara CA. Oh one other problem: the cover over the interior rear view mirror mount was not seated all the way. The delivery guys said put in a ticket which I did right there and the fixit guy came to the house about a week later and fixed it just fine. Since then no problems and it's got almost 19K miles on it from March 2022. I'm totally happy with everything and sorry to hear about all the problems other people have had. I've owned the Model Y performance for a year now. I had no big issues with build quality. My main problem is the car price does not match the over quality of the ride. Yes great fun and good, very good road grip and acceleration. However the car is not comfortable enough for this high price point. From small thing like the auto steering not working well, hot sweety seats, hard rough bumpy ride, to interface issues. The screen is great but the fact there is no front over the steering wheel dash causes a slue of issues. From strong audio prompts that takes away from the comfort of the ride to the feeling of riding blind or having to move your eyes unnecessarily from the road. The carrying size is not so great because of the hatchback shape. There is no spare wheel. No way to attach a towing hook. The shape of the wheels make it very hard to avoid curb rush and adds to the stress of riding in tight city streets. The screen monitor has some serious issues of font size and contrast, making some of the information hard to see. Making a phone call is hard. One has to reach all the way over to the passenger side to press call. No Waze app or car play. The google maps integration is just inaccurate. The car does not read road sign properly but cruise control relays heavily on it. Cruise control is buggy and has lots of false warnings. No sensors in the steering wheel cause the driver to constantly put strong pressure on the wheel left or right when in Auto Steering. Just uncomfortable. You feel every twitch the car makes not always necessary turns, when it tries almost religiosity staying in the center of the lane. The driver has no good feeling for the edge of the car because of the sloping bonnet design. No 360 view. Charging ports has strange design and no very easily accessible. The front trunk needs better design.

I have a 2022 Tesla Model 3 Performance. It has just 10,000 miles approximately. It's just a week or two shy of a full year old. # of issues that I've had in for service = 4. Total number of service appointments = 6. Noise in door (never resolved), wheel alignment from the factory (kept for many days), Autopilot crossing the center line (never resolved), fogged pillar camera (changed but didn't resolved it). x
First off, I love the car a lot! “Amazing!” is a word I use often to describe it. I'll never go “back” to ICE cars as they seem prehistoric. There's nothing out there that comes close in total experience.
Overall a very reliable and trouble-free car when compared to my experiences with ICE cars of over half a century! It's so clean, having no oil and filters to change!
It's so very, very convenient for me, with a 60 amp Tesla charger in my garage.
I actually “miss” going to a gas station, it's such a lifelong habit. Not.
My Tesla service experience has been a mixed bag.
Sometimes they just can't figure out the problem and they “give up”. Sometimes they send service and the tech is great. But I live far from the Tesla Service Center and it's a real big pain! Unlike conventional ICE cars that you can service in any home town. They also keep the car far, far too long. For example, one time they were do do a wheel alignment for a problem since delivery and they kept the car for 3 extra days while waiting for a spot in the alignment machine. They didn't seem to care that I'm unexpectedly out of a car and far away from home. Yes, I got Uber vouchers but far and away, not enough.
I've had a number of issues with the car, many waited for software updates to correct. Some I just live with because Tesla never could resolve the issues.
    My experience
    What I love:
It's so quick. It blows the mind. It handles tight curves like on railroad tracks. Totally amazing. Track mode is incredible as it increases regen braking to the max. I've learned to maximize performance with charge and temperature. Again, amazing! This car out performs some cars costing $100K!
Auto pilot (when working correctly) is so incredible, it's like having a copilot. I never feel alone as a driver. I always feel like someone is helping me. It's the best ever remedy for stop and go driving! Wow!
I love regen braking. I got used to it very quickly. I never want to go back to ICE.
Dog mode. We have dogs and they love us. We take them to many many of our sub 2 hour stops. I take them to my gym, to a bar for a drink, even out to dinner. They are always fine. We don't have to worry about them, and one of them does sometimes try to escape the home if we aren't there for her.
Camp mode. I went camping in it. Wow. I'm a bit guy and this is a small car. NO problems, I used a mattress made especially for the car.
A flexible car. Although mine is more of a sports car, it can double as a family sedan. We've taken whole family to and from airports. I wish we had seating for 6 instead of 5 at times, but that's a lot to ask.
I've had zero power train and battery issues.
Charging experience has been wonderful, once I learned that there are Superchargers everywhere I go and I don't need to worry, and I don't even need to plan. I only waited briefly once. The chargers always worked and it didn't take long to get what I needed. The Tesla charging infrastructure is a deal maker for buying a Tesla. Because of it alone I would never buy any other brand and I don't expect their problem to get resolved for a decade or more. I learned a different driving style on long trips. Just take a short break every 1-2 hours or more and charge while eating and going to the rest room or getting a cup of joe. Easy peazy.
The emissions tests is great joy for the kids and the kids in us adults too.
The car can be quite fun and I love that Tesla thinks and acts that way. Life should be more fun.
What went wrong and troubles, and some annoyances:
I'm a bigger guy at 6'1” and 240 lbs. I have a large frame, meaning my bones are larger than some and my shoulders and hips are larger than some people.
The seats have been awful. I didn't notice the problem on sub one hour drives and test drives. But over an hour and longer drives, ouch!
I've talked to Tesla owners all over the country. Most larger drivers hurt!
I had to rebuild my seats myself and now offer rebuilt Tesla seats to anyone.
With all the glass, the car is too damned hot!
I tinted all the windows and installed insulation underneath the ceiling glass and put a nice aftermarket glass ceiling insert as well. It looks good and solved the excessive heat issue. I also use “vent” in controls quite a bit and that also helps. I live in Florida where it gets hot. Tesla shouldn't have put so much glass with zero protection.
The “breaking in period” was very suspenseful and anxiety ridden. When I first got the car, the software was way behind as delivered. I had 2021 software in a 2022 car. Even the Tesla Service said so. I had a lot of extremely annoying and sometimes frightening and bothersome false alarms. I don't know what fixed it but over time it mostly went away. But I suffered for months.... I nearly sold the car! For example, even with hands on wheel constantly, it would alarm and shut off Auto Pilot. That is now resolved.
When I picked up the car on “delivery day” I noticed the driver's door made a reverberating sound. No other door made that sound. Like a thud, then thud, thud at lower volume. I requested service after I accepted the car, as I was told to do. After several services including replacing the mirror, the noise is still there when I shut the door. But only on the driver's door. I just got used to it. Tesla cannot fix it.
Delivery day driving was stressful. Although I watched many videos, there were surprises. For example, I could not find the AC controls. Stupidly, when the AC is off, the light goes out. Unless you know ahead of time where it is, it doesn't show anywhere. Now I know so it's not a problem. But the day one driving was difficult. I could not turn on the AC when I first picked the car up.
    Phantom Braking.
This is a horrific problem. Thankfully it's happening much, much less often than when I got it.
    Extremely slow resume to speed.
Under a number of circumstances, in autopilot, the car waits dangerously long to resume driving and to resume to driving speed. It has put me in danger a number of times. It still does this. And it's late to break after a car turns in front of us.
Auto pilot will sometimes cross the center line of the road.
I've had it serviced more than once and they said, it's within spec. But this is a terrible and extremely dangerous behavior and it's still there. Certain roads and only on right hand bends, it won't turn the wheel enough to stay in the lane but crosses into the opposing traffic!
The ride is a little rough.
My custom seats I built helped with that a lot.
    Wind noise.
There's annoying wind noise intermittently in the top rear of both front windows. I've tried numerous fixes. It gets better and the sound is less annoying but comes and goes to some degree. I might give up and get a service appointment. From my own experience with Tesla Service, I doubt they can do any better though.
    Screen readability
A lot of times the fine print is not readable in my seating position. This is especially true for alarms and warnings. And the notices is only on the screen a short time. Most of the time I cannot read it.
I installed a swivel mount and that helps a lot. The car should come with a swivel mount.
    Phone charger.
It doesn't fit any XL phone I've had. The length of the place to put the phone for wireless charging is just too short to accommodate moderately larger phones. And the phone isn't readable in there.
Ceiling is a bit low for a taller driver.
There's nothing that can be done about this. I want to sit more vertically but I'm tall and the ceiling is kind of on the low side.
    What I wish:
The range was just slightly more. It's supposed to be just over 300 miles but in reality if you are kind to the battery and you drive on highways, it's far less. I wish it was a 400 mile range car.
The ceiling wasn't so darn hot or there was a screen like most other cars have.
The ceiling is also too low both in front and in the rear. 6' persons do not fit well.
I wish the trunk opened more like the Model Y and that bar across the top of the trunk wasn't there.
    The ride was less jarring.
There was a better seat, even if it was optional.
There should be a built in phone holder. Everyone has a phone.
The charging station is out of sight the way that I sit in the car.
The phone holder should accommodate XL phones and have wireless charging.
There should be wireless charging for rear passengers as well. .
There should be an ability to put a larger drink cup or normal container in the console but it's too small.

Bought a 2021 Model 3. Within the first year the car lost power and would not charge. I contacted Tesla and they had the car towed to the nearest service center. They provided me with a loaner vehicle. It took them service center 3 weeks to make the repairs. The main computer failed so it was replaced. When I went to pick up the vehicle it was still in the maintenance mode so I had to wait for a tech to return to normal driving mode. I was never given an update during this process. Very frustrating. I really love the Tesla and enjoy the technology. Not sold on all electric. I am going back to a hybrid vehicle in the near future.

My 2006 Chevy Cobalt's black paint was WAY better than this, and that car was 18k MSRP and had 120k miles when I got rid of it and the paint on that car's hood looked better than my 65k Tesla's now after only 10k miles!

I do regret buying my Model 3. I soured on Tesla when I learned that, unlike other automakers, they do NOT cover the battery electronics under its battery warranty -which cost me almost $2K to repair. Also, Autopilot has become more unpredictable, erratic, downright scary with recent updates, unlike when we first took delivery. The one great thing about Teslas is… the Supercharger network. Other DCFC providers have a long row to hoe to catch up with it.

I took delivery of my Model Y January 26, 2023. I unfortunately ordered my Y in the beginning of May 2022 so I missed the coupon for the Tesla Home Charger by 3-5 days had I known I would’ve ordered it in April and not thought too much about it. My consolation is that I saved $11,000 with the price drop and get the $7500 tax credit.
I so far have driven around 3000 miles, I don’t have wi-fi so I have to go to the service center/delivery service to update my Y. One thing I would’ve been appreciative is if they told me where the hazard button is. I drive Lyft/Uber and need that button. I had to ask my friend who has a Y Performance.

about 45,000 kms on a 2021 Model 3 performance. Couple of service center trips for squeaks and rattles. Some squeaks I ended up fixing myself. The service guys did try, must admit. It may not have the level of finish my Lexus did, but I can forgive it for its faults (which are not many) because it is so much better in many other ways.

Did you switch your rims to induction? Or are those different hubcaps? And if you went to induction, did you notice anything different in ride quality or range loss?

I have 140,000 miles on my 17 Tesla P85S D and love it!! I used to be Mercedes owner for 35 years and will never go back! The maintenance and expense of operation have been near zero!

I’ve put about 22500km on my Model 3 Performance in 9 months. My biggest issues have been fit/finish (rattles and loose bits some of which have been fixed some not) and the hundreds of phantom brakes with autopilot and TACC. I’m not sure how long I will keep it but my next car won’t be a Tesla.

Overall I like my 2023 MYP but within 3 weeks it needed a new Drive Unit. Now the tires have a squeak/rubbing sound. They can't figure it out and I've had 2 SC visits just for that issue. Not sure yet if I would get another one yet though. I'll give it more time since I just got it Dec. 31.

I have a Freemont made one (lease) for 2 years from 2020 and its fit and finish was fair, and had a cracked rear window due to the old heater element having and bad design - replaced and a model-S loaner.
I now have a Chinese made car (2022) and it is fantastic and very well made with no issues. I think the Chinese made Tesla cars are very well made and to a much higher quality than the Freemont made cars.

I live in OC California. I started thinking about getting a Tesla... so now when I am driving around in my old minivan... I am amazed at how ... it seems that every third car in OC is a Tesla! So it was good to hear that people in the OC is the number one purchasers of Teslas....so my observation (although a little exaggerated) is not too far from the truth. 🙂

After 8 months with my Model Y long range, zero problems. Perfect so far. And delivery day was great too. Except there was a high wind that made it very cold. Not Tesla's fault though.
