Manual Volvo V70R: 5-Cylinder Forever Car // CARISMA

- To the untrained eye, Aaron’s 2004 Volvo V70R looks like a plain, anonymous Swedish box. That couldn’t be more wrong.
[CARISMA is The Drive's new series exploring the connection between enthusiasts and their cars. NEW EPISODE OUT TODAY! • Perfect: Toyota MR2 Bu... ]
From its 2.5L turbo five-cyl to its Haldex AWD system to its unique “spaceball” manual shifter, the V70R is a special piece of kit to begin with. But after buying it in college-and ignoring his friends’ doubts-Aaron set about building this 20-year-old Volvo into his perfect do-it-all vehicle to handle track days, road trips, New England winters, and everything in between.
His first project was swapping the exhaust to an 8Eight Fab dual catback in his dorm’s parking lot in the middle of winter. Next came suspension work: TME lowering springs, rear sway bar, upgraded bushings. Then the big stuff: a full interior swap to Atacama, a lightweight flywheel and short-shifter, and swapping the stock motor for a stronger ‘4T5’ five-cyl built by Re-Volv performance shop. Those are just the highlights.
The result? A perfect match of owner and machine, and a true forever car. "It's become this extension of myself. People know me, and they know my car. It goes hand in hand. This is an association with me, and there's nothing else I can find that can really do it,” says Aaron.
It’s also reconnected him to the feeling of joyful exploration he used to get riding around on his bike as a teenager. “It's been this gateway for me into the world. That started as a kid-I loved biking around, I worked at a bike shop in high school. That was my vehicle, so to speak, for getting around and exploring. This car has become that."
The under-the-radar look makes it even better when someone sees it and understands. It’s like a secret handshake for the car community. “It's cool to pull up at a traffic light, somebody rolls down the window and goes 'Oh my god, where did you find this? How did you get one? I can't believe it's manual!' There's nothing better than getting that kind of reaction from somebody from what is just a gray Volvo station wagon."
Watch the video and you’ll see “just a gray Volvo station wagon” is the understatement of the century.
(By the way, his friends get it now.)

Awesome, thanks for sharing this!
Shout out to Re-Volv. Great group of guys keeping cool Volvos on the road.
are the brakes stock?
for real tho
That’s the stuff. From the video all I could tell was it had an exhaust. More tech deets in the videos please 🙏
I wonder if he thinks his car is an extension of himself 🤔
Long live the 5 cylinder and fast estates!
This guy is basically a younger version of me. So many parallels: working in software development, taking baby steps with DIY, and finding a "forever" car. Thanks for sharing his story, /DRIVE.
And I do dig the mid-2000s S60R/V70R, spaceball shifter and all.
Hey, I know that guy! Thanks for the b-roll shots of my exhaust. Aaron bought the prototype years ago. I bet changing that out in the snow was fun.
you do some fine work over there
@@drive thank you!
I absolutely love what he's done. Like many of us who crave these wagons, I searched for even half-decent examples, but ultimately chose a 2005 Subaru Legacy GT Wagon with the less-than-great manual. I did love that car, though. Which turbo Subaru did he have?
@@8eightfab520 Still in business?
Dude i’m gettin one to go on mine sounds so good
Current GR Corolla owner, I miss the hell out of my V70R. Hands down one of the best cars ever made, if not, the best sports-wagon daily ever made.
While I do not like wagons, I adore my S60 R. I was about to trade it in for a GR Corolla about a year ago but I just couldn’t give it up. Too good.
I’ve had a 2.5t AWD for the last 6 years and I love seeing someone else love their V70 in the same way I do
hi, im looking into buying one as a daily.
is yours manual or automatic and how many miles is yours on?
also is there something you have noted while owning it, bad or positive?
And I thought I had the only V70R on CHs. Looks great!
These cars are classically designed and age so well! I miss mine. I swapped to the the M66 because the auto was trash but dam I miss it
like fine swedish wine
the 06/07 TF80 isn't THAT bad
@@bren.nan_ lol I replaced the valve body twice, that was enough to say it was a piece of
@@CRatcliffe mine is at 200k miles and im planning on getting the gearbox rebuilt next year along with going for an engine build with darton sleeves
I had a 2004 V70R, also in Ti Gray. I owned it nearly 6 years and had it been a manual.....I'd still have it. Such a quirky and fun car. And such a sleeper! I used to surprise the hell out of people once I tuned it and got rid of the stock Geartronic limitations.
Also....nomination for some of the best gauges EVER.
Shits on Subaru reliability while casually slipping blown Volvo engines into that endless word salad was chef’s kiss.
Hehehe, I noticed that too. "Kid with Turbo Subaru and it was broken all the time" usually means "bought modded Subaru", "beat it to death", or "modded car poorly". Full disclosure, I was an adult breaking a Subaru...I just know what we sound like. I do love this car, but I'll pick on the guy for no front plate and what looks like summer tires in winter.
He's got euro-plates, so you know he's special.
I’ve got the same car, and it became an extension of my personality on day one. Everyone I work with always asks about my R. I’m a Volvo enthusiast, ands out of all the Volvos I’ve owned (a wife daily drives a black p80 v70r as well) this is the car I will be buried in. About to begin a substantial resto-mod on top of all the aftermarket work already done.. LOVE IT.. love your car as well.. very very nice m66 p2R. Keep it forever!
that's awesome. you guys sound fun. glad you found yours too!
I’m so glad you guys are back!
thank you friend
Volvos are amazing cars. Solid. I just bought an 03 s80 2.9 and I love it. Can’t wait to make it my own like this cool guy. I definitely want a v70 r someday too 😍
good choice! and good luck with the build.
I started with an 04 S80 2.5t and have been thru 7 P2’s so far leading up to my current 06 S60 R and I just bought two FULLY LOADED P3 S80’s. The P3 S80 is my favorite but damn I do indeed love driving my R.
Do a manual swap that GM trans is trash on the t6
exactly what the DRIVE needs. Great vid!
🙌🙌🙌
Love Volvo station wagons. The V70R is a legend. Such a beautiful car.
My dad still daily drives his ‘05 R station wagon. I love my memories of riding with him through mountains and listening to the 5 cylinder turbo as we drove along. Fantastic car
Great start to the new series! V70R is definitely in my car bucket list. I'm still living the beat-up Subaru life myself but it is what it is.
it'll happen one day, 100%
We love station wagons-best configuration for carrying dogs!
Don't we though? Especially this gen of the V70.
i like that y’all are differentiating the channel by focusing on the relationships and i hope y’all stick with it!!! having a little more on their mods/restoration journey and WHY they did it that way would be my only asks, bc everything in this was great!
edit: just saw the mod list in the bio that’s a good compromise
thanks! i think we can make everyone happy as we dial it in.
Incredible seats, amazing stereo, fantastic 5 cylinder burble sound
to be fair that is a lovely example of a v70r. The orange interior is absolutely beautiful
Had one of these, well tuned as well. I miss this car more than anything I have owned. If only mine were a manual. This is sick man.
What happened to it?
@@drive sadly sold for a newer project in the form of a c8 chassis allroad.
Super clean 👌 always have love for a Volvo estate especially a turbo 5 cylinder
@drive I have been following this channel since 2011. Good to see you guys back.
thank you!
Beautiful stuff.. The offbeat thrum of that five cylinder engine 👌
Definitely left me wanting more info about the actual car, engine etc. Shot well visually just wanting more highlights of the uniqueness of this engine and platform.
got it!
I had 2 exact coloring ext M66 just like yours. Favorite cars I ever had
How crazy. I just watched a TH-cam video last night on one of these cars. The young kid was installing a turbo upgrade.
link?
Maybe WheelemVerb? Love his series on the V70R he bought for $1500
Honestly it so cool to have the channel back, and back in force. Amazing content keep it up
thank you ✌️
Welcome back
tyyyyy
Love that you guys are back! Just need a petrolicious reboot now…
thanks for hanging in there
I dig that yall are going for “not the norm” stuff without it being truly ridiculous. Looking forward to seeing how it shapes up. The exposure on some of the driving shots was rough but not much you can do about New England winters
Yeah, is what it is. It was also about 10 degrees that day. We're lucky Aaron and Tom didn't get frostbite.
Yeah. Perfect weather for the volvo lol. Keep your chin up lads
I've owned various p80 and p2 chassis Volvo's, but I've never owned the p2 chassis v70R with the iconic spaceball manual shifter. Love the p2 chassis v70R!!
Glad to see some V70R content!
Those inline 5s sound so good in person
Got my 03 M66 V70R sitting in my garage, i love this car!! I will never sell it
Sweet ride! Currently rocking a 09 Jetta 2.5 5 cyl 5 speed manual!
Drive is back? Goosebumps 🎉
we sure are!
this is so rad. im working on a mild 06 xc ocean race build right now. upstate NY, i need to link up with other NE volvo folks. just moved back from the west coast.
Constructive criticism ahead. I wish you guys all the best, and hope you do well. The footage is well shot, but these videos need a little work on structure and content. A section in the middle where you get into the technical specs and what the owner's done with it, for instance. Also give a brief history of the model itself. Why did Volvo develop the V70R? Why was it special at the time when it was new? Why did they stop producing it, and/or what replaced it? What are some of the things to look for if you want one of your own? Common failures and how he's worked around them?
One of the things that made /TUNED great was having someone like Matt come in and give his impressions of the car too. The/Drive should have a journalist who can do something similar. The storytelling and backstory of the owner's experience with the car isn't bad, but it goes on for too long and never changes gears. You need a few acts or chapters within the video.
- Ian (supervising producer at /DRIVE, back in the olden days)
Appreciate that Ian! Still dialing it in 🙏
@@drive you'll get there! Good work so far! I'm looking forward to what's next. And of course you don't have to cover everything I suggested. Just some ideas to dive deeper.
Ahh that familiar Rev hang... had a 2004 s60r m66. loved it. the rev hang annoyed the shit out of me tho. Wish I kept that car. Sold it with only 48k miles on it.
why sell, and what'd you replace it with?
@@drive sold it to buy my 1985 square body (needed a truck) which I still have! Summer truck only she’s in storage until April.
Welcome back!
thanks!!
Hoping to buy a 240 series someday.
Better get one soon the prices have gone up 10x in the last two years
I got to drive one around for a few weeks back before the pandemic. I was shocked that they weren't more popular before, that thing goes. Should have bought one when they were still cheap.
This is beautiful, brother
Good video, quite enjoyed it. Real nice car! Well done!
Didn’t mention the modifications at all? Why?
Exhaust and brakes, about all ud wanna do on these lol
More interested in himself than the car
We wanted to focus on the relationship between owner and car, but I get why it left you wanting. Working on that for future episodes.
@@drive that’s fair, I liked that component too. Just a quick blurb would have been perfect. I still watched it and will continue to.
@@driveI liked it, but the actual changes they make is a reflection of something. That's a problem with pretty much all car shows; they list the specs or even what's swapped out, but ... Why? Why do you like harder suspension? Why would you want raised wheels on this? Why that sound? Why this trim?
Sometimes it's obvious, but often it's about ... character.
We need a speed shop to sell singer level 850Rs. I need a new full focus RS drivetrain swap. Custom interior alll the jam on that toast.
god, that's a great idea
I love this car, its definitely a special one.
certainly is
Decent format, great editing video work. Guy did good considering he’s not an actor. Most people don’t realize how hard a video like this is. More about mods and what it took to get it to that point!
Appreciate the feedback!
I haven't seen that colour before. Beautiful car.
innit tho
@@driveIt is.
Love the swedish license plate in the front.
Nothing beats a fast Thørson Wagon. Saab 9-5 Troll R or Volvo V70R AWD Manual. Nice!!!!!!!
This is my dream car, V70R Wagon with the orange interior + manual. Beautiful car and so hard to find in this spec. Very jealous.
he put EVERYTHING ive been feeling into words with my 06 T5 m66.
put it up for sale after a year of owning it.. and IMMEDIATELY took the ad down as soon as i drove it again.
I'm not someone who fanboys for carbrands or any of the sort but the p24.. is just... yeah..
sometimes it be like that
Great looking wagon and very cool mods!
Dude talked WAY TOO MUCH about himself
Agreed, the guy said almost nothing about the (very special) car itself! A little tidbit about your relationship with the car is great, but this was an interview about a dude who just so happens to be driving a V70R.
Appreciate the feedback, DaOzMan0608
@@jclouw321 Heard. We're trying to explore people's relationships with their cars, but future episodes will include more tech details.
Literally gave up half way like just show me what it does haha
I mean, it is his build - I dont think it was out of context. maybe a technical breakdown once we have the story of the build would have rounded it out.
i recognize all of the roads from the opening shots
Lovely build. More external exhaust audio next time, come on it's the 5 pot we want to hear, right?
I bought my 2001 V70 T5 manual for exactly the same reason, always loved something a little different, understated but able to surprise Germans around the bends due to Bilsteins, Eibach springs and decent Eagle F1s. Desperately needs a sixth year though! Had it for 10 years, not selling it.
Wow, learned to drive with a similar year v70. I knew about the v70R’s and always wanted one but I had no idea you could get a manual. That’s a unicorn.
About 500 manual V70Rs sold in 2004.
my c30 exhaust is from this guy! thx 88fab
I had an 05 for a couple of years, no idea why I sold it...... Im currently looking for another one, a manual. Great video!
As a Swede I appreciate the Swedish number plate on the front. I'm amazed you're allowed to have different plates on the front and back of the car, that would never be allowed in Sweden!
Tomorrow I am dropping the front end out of my totaled 05 VR and putting it in my 04 flash green VR that has a blown engine. I’m hyped.
Wagon ftw!
I get you. I plan to buy a land near my hometown to build a house and a garage so I can get and work on a v70r, such a beautiful classic.
Beautiful Build !
His next Swedish build needs to be a Saab wagon!
Great car for the video. For the 2nd one in a row, we're finding out a little too much about the owner and not quite enough about the car/build.
Hopefully they get their ratio of personal details to technical details fine tuned. Automotive Anatomy has a very good split imo. Close to 50/50 and it’s broken up throughout the video.
Classic design that can be pretty nice.
Mild annoyance,
That swedish plate has a tax sticker on it so it was a rear plate originally(peel it off).
looks beautiful 👍🏼
Nice. Nothin like 5 pot scream.
sporty wagons are peak
The Swedish front plate is registered on a 520d Touring 🤔
I Sverige ja
You put the Swedish rear plate in the front. The tax sticker is was in the rear. when we still had tax stickers.
Great driver highlight. That about a car that speaks to its owner is what’s great about these kinds of videos. Makes me miss the hell out of my ‘96 850R wagon. 😢
BMW e39 with M5 swap is awesome as well!
We'll hopefully be featuring a modified E39 Touring soon! Stay tuned.
lovely ! I am an owner of the e39 M5 and E60 M5 but touring is a different build !
@@propergarage4249 awesome. Did you see Chris Harris just bought and reviewed his own e61 m5? 😍
@@papa_pt not yet ! I will need to do that !
In my humble opinion, the v70r is the single best all-purpose vehicle ever built by any auto manufacturer. I don't think it has any flaws other than the fact that it is expensive to maintain
as an owner and devil's advocate.. what about the e61?
I was deciding between Legacy wagon (5 speed for highway driving no good), v70R and e61 535i. Ended up in the BMW since prices were so similar. I daily mine, hybrid turbos and now at 124k miles.
Maintenance on the v70 must be better.
The combination of performance, functionality, design, and character is almost unbeatable.
@@papa_pt I'd still take the Volvo as I believe it to be a safer automobile. That's not to be taken as a knock against BMWs. I've owned many Volvos over the years and would love to own another. And the v70r would be my choice far and away
The only problem is rotten front strut towers 😢
@@nevets5891 well I suppose that depends on where one lives. Any place where there is a lot of salt used for snow purposes, there's always going to be a rust issues. Add a dear friend that had a v70r. Not a spot of rust anywhere on the car
This format has potential, but I agree with many who say there is too much focus on the human, and not enough on the machine. I suggest you work on balancing that out in order to give us gearheads more of what we crave. Good content is well-edited and planned. Great content has a blend of emotion and engineering to draw both ends of one's psyche to the center point.
Heard loud and clear. Thanks for the feedback.
I know this dude, awesome guy.
Those swedish plates belong to a 2017 BMW these days, also he's got a rare license plate up front, you can tell by the old tax-sticker (they stopped being a thing in 2010) being on it, those went on the rare plates of the car.
I wanna see this car in Boston 💪🏽 car looks sweet I wish I can hear more of the car itself like some audio raw noise of the exhaust and maybe a clip on the track cool seeing Boston in this vid very close to home Volvo wagon looks beautiful def not a grocery getter lol
thanks for watching. we’ll have a better setup for capturing exhaust sounds in future eps.
Fun Fact: the license plates on this car come from a BMW 520d from 2017.
Don't ask how I know.
Nice engine sound, always love me a 5 cylinder. Hard to listen to this guy tho. 1417313 beats per minute yapping.
wagon life 💪
for some, it's the only way
All for the enthusiast and his car approach. But I want to know more about the mechanicals, and how mods have changed things
Good feedback, thanks
Love the v70r and the bbs ch but hate the yellow foglights.
I see what you’re trying to do with the more personal perspective on the cars. There is a guy in OC with a channel called automotive anatomy. His sense of humor isn’t my favorite but he has refined for years what it seems you’re trying to do with this channel, sharing the owner connection. It’s almost all Hondas but you might like his format and editing.
Cool story, cool car! Awesome!
thanks for watching!
Nice car. I plan to drive my 2003 V70 NA M56 until at least 500k miles.
go get 'em
Keep these videos around 10min-20min The owners should talk more about the mods and his journey with the mods
thanks for the feedback!
I had a manual T5 only thing I never liked was the turning circle.
Love it!
Man, I have the newer, younger brother of the V70, the V60 T5.
Sometime I wish I had held out for a V70R... I love my V60. But it gets zero love, especially when coming from a SAAB 9-5 Sportcombi Aero.
