  • My new friend James at JT Auto Classics (www.jtautoclassics.com) invited me up to his workshop to drive a couple of cars in his inventory. Today, I'm looking at the Volvo V70R - an iconic vehicle which replaced the infamous 850R, and was the default choice for the antiques dealer in a hurry.
    But, 22 years on, why would you buy one?

    The old Volvo estates always seem to have far more boot space and better shaped than modern estates.

      My first car was a Yellow T-5R (called T-Yellow in Sweden), with the original Titan wheels 😎👍
      But it wasn't stock, chip tune and Ferrita sport exhaust so 315Hp. Great first car! Drove to fast all the time but never got a speeding ticket 🎫😁

  • @Playstationguy1999
    @Playstationguy1999 4 ปีที่แล้ว +23

    That car is super clean! You just can't find them in such nice shape these days, at least in the US. The 1997-mid 1999 V70Rs in automatic were actually 4-speed autos, which is why the gearing is so long... I used to have a 1996 850R sedan with the same transmission. In 1997-1998, you could actually get these cars with a 5-speed manual, in both AWD and FWD versions! In mid 1999, they upgraded the 4-speed to a 5-speed automatic for the V70Rs, as well as increasing the turbo size and boost. While you still don't have a semi-automatic mode with the 5-speed auto, the gearing is leagues better. I have a 2000 V70R AWD myself (last year of production for this generation) and it's been a fantastic car... so much quicker than the previous years, which I have all test drove when searching for a successor to my 850R. However, that being said, I love all of the '90s Volvo R models, especially the ones with cool colors like the saffron orange in this video :)

  • @swedfilms
    @swedfilms 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    In Sweden, most of the V70 R models have been used as donors, and the engines end up in older 2/740's. The T5 has good potential! Some guy ripped a 2JZ out off his Supra and replaced it with a T5.

    My dad had one of these and I remember it very fondly. My favourite car that he owned as I was growing up actually. He used to say however he drove it it would always return either 20-22mpg! Also the auto has a ridiculously long 1st gear for some reason. If I could find a manual (rarer) I’d be very tempted. Great video as always, cheers!

I had a 850 T-5 automatic, AW50-42 trans broke within 10.000 km, swapped it with a M56 manual. It was a 2.3T on LPG-G3. With a 3" downpipe and race-cat. R-bumpers, 18" original Pegasus rims, and HIDS. About 280-290hp.topped it out once @265km/h at the speedo. Sold it with 320.000km.

    Bloody loved this car, when I drove it in the late nineties! PROPER mid-range acceleration! You don't need quick 0-100; you need quick 80-160 - and in this range the faithful Volvo is FAST! VERY FAST! (Forgot to mention that I drove a manual...)

    • @sonicstep
      @sonicstep 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree about the mid range acceleration (traction from rest is piss poor anyway, unless it has L.S.D.). That is where my 850 excels. Unfortunately, it got me pulled over by the cops recently. Fortunately, the officer was reasonable and I didn't get a ticket (mine is a manual gearbox).

    Jay, I had a 98 T5 - drove it for 10 years, retired 2 car seats while rolling this delight. This car is a bit iconic, people really liked it, gave me a bit of individuality, which I really didn't expect, because it really wasn't that great a car. I could hear the tailgate rattling in your video, they sell a kit to fix that, it is a solid must do! Also, you didn't mention the torque steer, perhaps it is better in the AWD version, but it was murder in the T5. I enjoyed the video, but I think you are wrong about the audience. Younger people eat this stuff up, it would go fast here in the Northwest (USA).

    I got a V70 SE that had a worn and damaged suspension. Replaced it, and it doesn’t ride all that great. Might’ve needed to spend a bit more on a better suspension system, but I still love the car. It’s got a lot of space and it’s pretty quick despite being a non-turbo automatic. I’d buy another one if I had more money to spare

  • @ralfhenke677
    @ralfhenke677 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I drive a 940 turbo Estate (165hp) with now 300k on the clock - so just about well run in. It doesn't rust, it doesn't fail, the boot swallows basically everything you throw at it, it's light and spacious inside, the kids love it, it's comfy, it's no slouch (0-60: 9.5s, Vmax 127 mph), it's still fairly eco (I average 26 - 29 mpg and I sure do push it a bit) . And best of all: It's still RWD! No 4x4 nonsense or nose-heavy understeer through a FWD.
    As an everyday car it really is hard to beat - even by brand new models.

    A manual, either in t5 or r form, is much better to drive than the auto for sure. They are also as rare as hens teeth so good luck with that! I understood that the auto r's also had a slightly smaller turbo too? And the engine in the Focus ST and the later V70r's isn't the same as this engine, that is the 2.4/5 litre engine, not as strong as the 2.3

  • @Stratoszero
    @Stratoszero 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Trouble with the AWD is the extra weight of the rear end set up which i think is lifted directly from the 900 series, and you can really feel it in accelleration and mpg. However all weather useability means its unstoppable in anything slippy. Its a trade off only you can decide. Plus the 5 speed auto box sounds like a good idea but is prone to expensive failure, ditto the transfer case. The default answer is say "find a 2WD T5", but those have all been bangered to death, so perversely there are more Rs around (like JayEmms recent vis on the 156 GTA, easier to find than a regular V6...)

      @@STG44VOLVO I'm pretty sure it came in manual for all of the years, at least here in Sweden :) My comment was more of a wtf to whoever ordered it in auto in the first place. Nowadays with much better autos it would be either/or, but back then with the slush piles... If you wanted a plush-mobile, why not get the regular turbo model? I guess the looks, but who likes a pretender?

    I own a 98 C70, pretty much the same car under the skin. I have to re-emphasize the "ludicrously long gearing" part. The 4 spd auto in these cars, despite being remarkably quick for the era, is geared so silly. The car feels like it wants to do a top speed run on every road. Not great for short drives around town, but an amazing cruiser on the highway for sure.

    Very nice, but with one small error- the transmission should be a 4-speed auto, not a 5-speed. The 5-speed was introduced for the 99/00 cars. I've never even seen a photo of the GPS option on these, it's insanely rare. Most either had nothing there, or a center speaker for the premium sound system option.
